Know the Impact of Smoking on Dental Implant Procedure

Before dental implants, dentists advise you to leave smoking. If the patient cannot quit smoking for a lifetime, it is advised to leave at least for a month before and after the procedure. Sometimes, dentists advise this for other dental procedures as well. Smoking has a significant negative impact on the teeth, including dental implants. It’s because nicotine gets absorbed by the body and causes a stimulating response. Also, smoking leads to the failure of the dental implant procedure.

Affect of smoking on dental implants The riskiest impact of tobacco on the body is it causes changes in blood flow. It means the flow of the blood in smokers is not efficient and similar to the blood flow of non-smokers. When the blood flow is not proper, the delivery of oxygen to the bone and gums is reduced. And when it happens, it takes time to heal or create strong bone around the dental implant. Other than this, smoking impacts the immune system of the person. If the immune system is weak, the body is unable to fight against pathogens which lead to gum disease and tooth loss. Pathogens affect dental implants, lead to complications, and lower success rates.

Smoking- a strong reason for the dental implant failure For successful dental implants, there should be good delivery of oxygen to gums and teeth, the immune system should be strong and the person should take care of the implants after the procedure. If you take any of these for granted, the procedure will not be successful. For more…..
