Virginia Bakery refuses to serve Vice President

Due to a disagreement with the “you didn’t build that statements recently made by the Obama administration the owner of the recently opened Crumb and Get It bakery (http://www.crumbandgetit.com/) recently acted on his right to refuse service to anyone, by asking the vice presidential entourage to leave his place of business. Surprisingly enough shortly thereafter several secret service agents entered the bakery, personally thanked the business owner and proceed to buy some baked goods, when asked if they were worried that this decision may effect business the owner Chad McMurray did not seem concerned. After being refused service the vice presidential party made their way to River City Grill Located a short distance away, where they were provided service, regardless of politics.

Forbes Magazine Names Houston “Coolest” City in America Written By R. Jackson

Rodeos, great food, an entertainment giant, job opportunities, and “cool”…a.k.a. Houston, Texas. A recent article in Forbes magazine named Houston the number one “cool” city in America, taking into consideration job opportunities, local dining and a vast array of entertainment venues as part of their in-depth assessment. According to Forbes: “Houston is known for many things: Oil, NASA, urban sprawl and business-friendly policies. But the Texas city deserves to be known for something else: coolness.” Forbes continues “The Bayou City may not be the first place you associate with being hip or trendy. But Houston has something many other major cities don’t: jobs. With the local economy humming through the recession, Houston enjoyed 2.6% job growth last year and nearly 50,000 Americans flocked there in response — particularly young professionals. In fact, the median age of a Houston resident is a youthful 33.” Houston has been one of the leading producers of jobs in our country for decades. From the always-growing oil industry to being a leader in technology and science, Houston offers vast and diverse opportunities for the American Dream. In addition to well- known establishments such as NASA, Houston is home to other leading powers in technology. Hewlett Packard has made Houston its home, as has web software company cPanel and hosting giant HostGator.com. Houston is also known for M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, as well as being home to leading scientists, doctors, musicians, athletes and actors in their respective fields. While young people don’t view job creation as something trendy, it does lead us to consider what else Houston has to offer: fun. “Stylish housing developments have popped up downtown, restaurants have taken up residence in former factories and art galleries like the Station Museum have been inhabiting warehouses.” states Forbes. They summarize their feelings for Houston with what is arguably the boldest statement of all: “Combine that with a strong theater scene, world-class museums and a multicultural, zoning-free mashup of a streetscape and you have the recipe for the No. 1 spot on Forbes’ list of America’s Coolest Cities To Live.” After a non resident of Houston reads this article in Forbes, one must ask themselves one question. “Is coming to Houston to visit or live something worth my while?” Speaking as a long-time resident of Houston, who has lived in various places, I can say from personal experience: “Absolutely!”. Houston has everything I’ve ever wanted, and is the one place I love to call home. But don’t take my word for it. Just ask the 50,000 people who moved here last year and see for yourself when you come visit. We’d be glad to have you.

Texans Fired Up With Preseason Win Written By R. Jackson

The Texans defeated the Carolina Panthers August 11, in their first pre-season game. After the loss of Joel Dreessen, it was speculated by many that this would be a difficult season for Houston. However, after a strong performance by Houston’s defense, opinions quickly changed. Brooks Reed annihilated Cam Newton in a devastating sack, combined with multiple blitzes by Houston’s defense throughout the game. Tim Dobbins and Whitney Mercilus are noted for their sacks throughout the game, however all eyes are still on Wade Phillips, who didn’t even break a sweat and still remained almost untouchable. James Casey, Garrett Graham and Keshawn Martin should also be commended for their outstanding athleticism throughout the game. Martin had a great catch on the opening drive, while Graham’s performance in the second half provides great promise for Houston’s offense. With both the offense and defense providing a spectacular performance against the Panthers, it’s evident that the Texans will be a driving force this season in the NFL, with many surprises to come. Houston defeated Carolina 26-13 in an away game to kick off the season. The Texans battle against the San Francisco 49ers on August 18 at Reliant Stadium in Houston. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.

Exclusive Interview With Dr Raymond Ong, CEO of Rayfish Footwear Q: How was the idea of genetically engineered stingray leather conceptualized? From where was the inspiration drawn? A: My doctoral research was into the manipulation of the genetic mechanism that governs pattern-formation. As my family has been involved in the production of stingray leather goods for many years, it was logical to apply this process to stingrays. Q: What impact do you foresee the alleged release of your engineered stingrays may have on the environment? A: It will be hard to gauge the impact. The rays are a non-native species to Southeast Asia (the Southern Stingray, native to the Atlantic). There is the remote possibility that they may live and reproduce. However, as they are captive-bred and brightly colored, it’s far more likely that they will be eaten by predators. We are working with local fishermen to attempt to recover any surviving rays. Q: How do you plan to move forward after the recent tragic events that have befallen your facility and livestock? A: While we will move forward producing stingray leather goods, although in light of the backlash, we may have to make adjustments to our marketing and general business model. Q: Did you anticipate such backlash from the environmental extremist community when initially announcing plans to produce genetically modified stingray leather shoes? A: I was surprised by the severity of the backlash. To me, this process seemed a logical step forward from centuries of selective breeding of animals, as well as the genetic manipulation that already occurs in many animals and food crops. I find it strange that the activists would choose to target a small start-up rather than the many “factory farms” where true cruelty occurs. Q: In your recent video statement you touch on the fact that most people are not aware of the origins or labor involved in the majority of products that are used today such as footwear, do you believe this general “social ignorance” as to consumer products is responsible for some of the negative response your company has seen as of late? A: Absolutely. Certain products that are produced in a morally objectionable manner (for instance in sweat shops, in unregulated mines, in factory farms) have become socially normalized. Most people blindly accept their existence. There is no doubt a “shock of the new” associated with the Rayfish product. By being honest about the process, we may have exposed ourselves to more scrutiny than other, more opaque companies.

Initially when coming into this game, I have to admit my expectations were not too high, as I am more familiar with the RPG games produced by Square Enix, of which I am not a huge fan. What Sleeping Dogs delivered was an Hong Kong bullet opera, rife with drama, intense gunfights, slick car chases and some of the coolest fighting sequences I’ve seen in a long time, with many unique “environmental hazards” you can make use of to fry, crush, mangle, impale, electrocute and otherwise ruin the day for the various enemies you will encounter. There is no shortage of Eye Candy in Square’s digital Hong Kong...

combat is very cinematic and provides unique camera angles to showcase the most brutal attacks.

As the game is set in Hong Kong, firearms are a bit difficult to come by, and attract quite a bit of attention if used, so don’t expect to run the streets with an ak shaking down hookers GTA style. The RPG element I was expecting also makes an appearance, with your character having 3 attributes: your Triad level, which is increased by performing violence and mischief in general, your police level which is effected by the amount of collateral damage you cause, and finally your “face” level, which effects the cars and outfits you can purchase. Additional combat training can also be had by locating various hidden items throughout the campaign to increase your already formidable kung-fu with additional sick combos, like “the knee breaker” which can be used to cripple foes in combat. All in all a rock solid open world action game, with a decently solid story, nice visuals and great combat. 8/10

This Mind Trip is no Vacation! The plot follows the life of one Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell) while he struggles his way through ridiculous amounts of action sequences which are laden with some of the most over the top cgi seen so far this summer, the film seems to be missing some of the punch and overall 80’s cheese that made the original tolerable and far from being a successful reboot it seems to have simply watered down the original and thrown in robots, because robots! All and all while it may be a letdown for fans of the original it is an acceptable, if brainless, summer action film.

Freelancers A solid summer cop drama that features some nice eye candy and a few decent scenes along with plenty of action but is dragged down by some poor acting, while the plot itself is fairly solid although a bit predictable at times without too many holes that leave the audience wondering some of the delivery provided by upcoming action star and hip hop legend 50 Cent could have been done better, however in general 50 Cent did an excellent job of portraying a cop making tough moral decisions in a world where the line between good and evil is not clearly cut.

Feature Review: The Dark Knight Rises Written by: R. Jackson

Christopher Nolan’s final production in his last eight years of the Batman saga gives us the almost instant classic “The Dark Knight Rises”. Nolan’s depiction of Batman gives us a whole new look into this masked vigilante, one that leads astray from the earlier versions. With both Rachel and Harvey Dent leaving us for good in “The Dark Knight”, there are lots of questions that remain unanswered. Rotten Tomatoes gives “The Dark Knight Rises” an 87% rating, with 92% of their viewers liking the movie, almost half a million of them. Their review is summed up in one simple line that is agreed by many: “The Dark Knight Rises is an ambitious, thoughtful, and potent action film that concludes Christopher Nolan’s franchise in spectacular fashion, even if it doesn’t quite meet the high standard set by its predecessor.” With all due respect to Tom Hardy and his excellent job as Bane, the masked terrorist who drove Batman from his self exile from our last encounter, it didn’t quite live up to “The Dark Knight” in which Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker stole the screen, and the hearts of millions. Nolan’s theme for this Batman series was a darker, more sinister one, which his fans have come to expect. While “The Dark Knight Rises” certainly provides these elements, it doesn’t come close to the creepy feel of Heath Ledger’s maniacal laugh and psychotic demeanor that Ledger made his own, and lived. While “The Dark Knight Rises” was one of the most anticipated films of the year, and one that was considered a favorite pick for this summer’s blockbusters, it only gets 4 of 5 stars for this main reason. Many people came in expecting this to surpass that of “The Dark Knight”, and while it certainly was a film for the ages, it certainly could have given more to the fans in its almost 3 hour runtime. For all Batman and non Batman fans alike, this is certainly a film to see, but as the final movie in an epic series, you may want more.
