BOSSES is a yearly zine by clothing label Jess Øberlin, JØ. JØ is two piece tight suits, made for each and every body. It’s an experimental platform introducing thoughts and works made by or with the brands network of supporters. It’s meant to give insight into who’s wearing JØ suits. They all submitted something to be used. Jess is your fan, so you could call it a fanzine, a labor of love and a thank you. Everyone you’ll meet in here has helped out by buying suits, modelling, marking art, taking photos, singing karaoke, stickering cities, sending me secret self made websites, double tapping online, twerk instructing, being my friend, experimenting, silk screening, drawing, feeding, tattooing, pizza ordering, pep talking, tear drying, nightshop hanging, believing in me, encouraging, pushing, champagne buying and drinking, party starting, joke making, hat wearing. Jess grew up in Kars,Ontario, Canada in the ‘90’s. You probably don’t know where that is, and that’s ok. This is her, last year outside the house she grew up in. As a child, she dreamt of being someone in the fashion world. Now she makes suits that make people feel really good. She wants you to buy her suits so that you feel good and she can keep making more suits, and make more people feel good. It’s a suit that unites a whole bunch of likeminded people. People with good taste, attitude and values. Fearless, and powerful. Since you are reading this, you are probably one of those people. Yes, YOU. Jess wants you in her suit. You’re also a boss. Someone who looks at life and says, “Hey life, you’re mine. I’m gonna live you to the max, I will clothe this perfect body of mine and take on each day with all I’ve got.”

1. Public Clocks - There is something really comforting to me when I am in a new city and see a public clock. I feel even though I may be lost in space, I am always connected in time to the locals around me. 2. Sun sets/rises - These transitional times of our 24 hr cycles are fleeting. Every now again we are blessed with bursting colour palettes, which give us an excuse to pause from our daily routines and look up at the sky in awe. They are nice reminders of our own mortality and the importance of taking nothing for granted. 3. Flying - Nothing brings me more comfort and joy than flying in an airplane. There is something about the experience that makes me feel superhuman. It is like defying all natural law. Humans were not designed to travel at 885 km per hour and at altitudes of 35,000 feet. But my favourite thing about flying is the ability to “time travel” across time zones, back or forth. Jet lag is a really interesting side effect of this “time travel” and I welcome the feeling. 4. Electronic Music - I listen to all genres of music, but electronic music has a special place in my heart. It is the soundtrack to my experience, and a force that can instantly focus all my attention to a designated task - whether it be writing an essay or getting household chores. 5. Collaboration - It is unbelievable what can be accomplished if strengths and forces are teamed up. Collaborating can bring ideas to fruition at an expedited speed; it can also “un-stick” ideas that have been locked in your heads. Different perspectives are integral to making great art.

When I look back at our high school days, I think “Fuck we were cool!”. Now that might not have been the popular opinion at the time, and certainly the so called cool kids might disagree, but WE DID NOT GIVE A SHIT. Our style consisted of second-hand store finds, copious amounts of sparkles, and the occasional sticker on the face. We loathed brand names, even when every student at our school wanted to be seen in the latest Tommy Hilfiger sweater. We lived for the Friday night punk shows, sleepovers with our best girlfriends, and Sublime dance parties.This was a time before internet and social media ... our form of communication? A beautifully crafted note on paper, passed in class, secretly of course. Sometimes it was a wildly inappropriate comic about a Banana Man, sometimes it was a heartfelt letter of friendship. In many ways I feel so lucky we passed through high school without a cellphone to document our every move. We might be in some serious trouble today if that were the case! Did I mention we lived in the country? There was a serious lack of things to do. We really had to make our own fun. For example, on one fine evening, we made root beer from scratch. How? Well it was an experiment of sorts, some ingredients included sambuca, melted marshmallow, orange juice, maple syrup ... well you get the idea, it was disgusting! Many evenings were taken up making amazing movies with an old school camera ... yes I mean VHS! One was a horror movie called Got Milk? that was more unseasonable than I would like to admit. Another was actually for a religion class, where in one part we shook our asses to Beyonce - how did we do on this assignment? Unnervingly well, but we did have a slightly perverted religious studies teacher. Through it all we had each other’s backs. Boyfriends, gossip, fashion, parties - we did it all, but we stuck together. Years later, not much has changed. I saw Jess last summer here in Canada. With her she carried a Jess Oberlin suit made specially for me! We danced our asses off again, this time at a music festival. We still don’t give a shit.We still have unique fashion choices, and we definitely still know how to make our own fun!

February 21, 2016, Eindhoven, Dear Mom, part 1, Remember that time when my best friend and me started drunk-texting you in the middle of the night? I don’t often tell you that I love you, but that was pretty much what that meant: I’m thinking about you and I love you. And this letter, these few little bits about my life that you don’t yet know about me, they are to tell you not to worry so much… This full-blown adulthood is growing on me. Oh how I hated the way you listened to music when I was younger; just randomly listening to an indiscriminate radio station playing whatever, the volume turned down to a whisper in the background. I still can’t wrap my head around that indifference to music. Yes I admit to an eclectic taste but there’s a method to the madness; I know just where to turn to for fun or some spirit lifting, comfort or anger management. For fifteen years now, I have considered myself unilaterally engaged to Nick Cave… And yeah, at the same time I’m convinced that it’s a good idea to live your life by 80’s pop lyrics. I mean, just listen to this one: - We can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind, ‘cause your friends don’t dance and if they don’t dance, well, they’re no friends of mine – 1982, Men without Hats And you know what the best part is Mom? I find myself surrounded by people to dance with, and we do dance a lot. We soft-dance, we hard-dance and we take care. Where you see commitment issues to a grown-up life, I believe I’m just diversifying my commitments. I’m very committed to dancing on a beach, I’m dedicated to having mind-blowingly good sex, I run an unusually welcoming household. Those things may seem small and trivial to you, but they add up.
