DEMONS

LETTERFROMTHE EDITOR

I'm scared of many t hings ranging f rom deep, psychological f ears t o more trivial things like t he dark or driving in the rain. It 's human nat ure to build aversions to things that make us f eel upset. There are many dif f erent pat hs we can choose when it comes to dealing wit h our f ears. We can cower f rom them and hide, ignoring them and allowing them to grow more and more attached (aka st ronger aka scarier aka not a good option) or we can embrace them, challenge our f ears in order to overcome them. You cannot let things consume you. They will eat you alive if you allow them to. They will st op you f rom living and embracing all of the beaut if ul opportunities lif e has to of f er. October is the mont h of Halloween, when our monst ers come out to play. The one time the entire world f eels brave enough to make a mockery of our worst night mares. In October, we are given the opport unity to challenge the t hings t hat keep us awake at night , and that is exact ly what we int end to do in this issue. Our f ears are less ominous if we know that others f ear them as well. It gives us the arsenal we need to stand toget her and f ight back against t hem. Grab your f avorit e blankie, turn of f t he light s, and dive int o the darkest , inner recesses of our brains. We have candy, I promise.

HOMESPUN:UBERCUTE PUMPKINCARVING okay...it's no secret that I love emojis. they have become a staple way for me (and much of the world) to express themselves. they're cute and fun and what better way to bring them to life than to carve them into your pumpkins for halloween?!

unfortunately, i was unable to find this design on an actual pumpkin, but this is a template example and the one I use when I make my own emoji pumpkins!!

HEARTEYEEMOJI PUMPKIN STEP ONE: GET A PUMPKIN (duh!! pick one of your choosing, big or small)

STEP TWO: GET A KNIFE, SPOON, SHARPIE, AND MINI CANDLE (go ahead and cut the lid off and scoop out all the nasty guts with your spoon)

STEP THREE: DRAW YOUR DESIGN (take your sharpie and draw the outline of the face, but make sure to leave four one inch gaps at equal intervals to you don't just have a huge hole lolol that would suck. draw two hearts for eyes and a half circle for a mouth)

STEP FOUR: CARVE (cut out all those things you drew...if you need help from an adult, don't be afraid to ask!! better safe than sorry!!)

STEP FIVE: YOU'RE ALL DONE!! PUT A CANDLE IN THE CENTER AND LIGHT IT AND LET THE CUTENESS EXPLODE ON YOUR PORCH OR IN YOUR HOUSE!! 7

MUSIC

This issue we are f ocusing on t he eery, st range melodies of Soap and Skin, music project of Austrian musician Anja Plaschg. This album, Lovetune f or Vacuum, embodies the def inition of f ear. These t unes are t he t ype of songs you would hear coming f rom an old record player wit h no record, a radio wit h no bat teries, a st ereo t hat isn't plugged in. Tracks such as Sleep and Thatanos play in your head as you caref ully peak under your bed. Spiracle, another strange play, dwells in the sadness of the young. Throughout t he album, you will f ind rich meaning behind misery and woe, and strangely you will probably like it . Underst anding t he 25 year old's musicality will transport you int o a world of wolves, night skies, scared children, hairs standing up on the back of your neck, and ultimately wait ing f or the moment t hat will make you scream in exciting terror. With Halloween right around t he corner, Lovet une f or Vacuum will give you the scare everyone desires. If you give this f abulous album a list en, you wont want t o pull away. Its the type of spook you look f orward to!

FAILURE

I am scared of f ailure. It is an overwhelming f ear. Fear that I will not be good enough, pretty enough, smart enough. It is an icy cold venom that runs through my veins everyday. I hate talking about the f uture or about college. I don?t want to go, not because it entails more school or more hard work, but because that means I am one step closer to having to make something of myself . It will soon be expected of me to do something wit h my lif e, to pursue a career, get a job, make money. In case you?ve never had to experience that pressure bef ore, let me inf orm you: it is of a bone crushing densit y. My mind races wit h the possibilit y of being a hobo, bumming money of f of strangers who, if they are anything like me, ref use my begging. I go through the process of telling myself people have done it bef ore out of choice! Kerouac and that dude f rom Into the Wild. They CHOSE that lif e. I?ll be okay?right? But I am not lef t with a sense of relief , inst ead a creeping dread, a dread that I will graduat e f rom college and mess it all up. The f uture and opport unities I have worked so hard to secure f or me will come crashing down at my f eet and I will not know what to do. Success is f lashed bef ore our vacant f aces every second possible. We are addicted to it, crave it. We watch f ootball games. We read magazines. We watch realit y TV. That is the purpose of the Internet, to keep us inf ormed on the lives and wellbeing of people who were told t hey could not do it, but alas, succeeded. People prettier than us, smarter than us. People who were f ar more than enough. Their success is shown to us on our tablet s, phones, TVs, even on billboards as we drive down the highway in an att empt to escape the chaos. The American staple of ?You can be anything you want to be? has been presented and passed down through the ages, a tale as old as time, a proverb or prayer we whisper to ourselves as we f all asleep. Although it has been said and resaid f or generations, I think my generation is the f irst generation to actually believe it. We do not care how many times we 20

are t old it ?s impossible. Anytime someone asks me ?What do you want t o do?? and I answer meekly wit h ?journalism?, I brace myself f or the whirlwind of wisdom t hat is t o f ollow. I will be t old t o ?get out f ast, run f or t he hills. There are no jobs in t hat f ield. Well, t here are jobs, but no money. You probably wouldn?t like it . You seem sof t spoken. You?re a smart girl; you could do so much more.? I do not want t o do more. I want to do somet hing t hat makes me happy. I believe success can be measured on many plat f orms: happiness, money, f ame, et c. And, t o me at least , t he greatest of these is happiness. I do not wish t o make millions (it would be nice, and in no way am I saying I am opposed t o it (please send me money. I?ll love you)). I do not want my f ace on your TV or in your magazine (once again t hat would be nice hehe, probably, unt il t he illuminat i t ried t o coerce me int o t heir cult (then I would be scared)). I want t o do what makes me happy. I want t o do what I?m good at. I know my strengt hs (t hey are completely limit ed t o reading and writing) and I know my limit s. I am incredibly scared of f ailure. It ?s lef t me f rozen, unable t o speak, and in t ears bef ore, but I know t hat , by my standards, t here is not hing t o f ear. So, no, sorry mom and dad, I probably won?t live in a house like the one your secure jobs have af f orded me and I won?t be able t o go shopping all t he t ime and get my nails done and be ?comf ort able?, but I will be happy. I will be successf ul because I will be able t o go home at night and crawl int o bed, exhaust ed, but have the f uzzy f eeling in my heart t hat comes along wit h knowing that I love what I do and all of t he people I get to meet t hrough my prof ession and experiences I get t o live t hrough. I will be happy, which is something t hat many people will, bit t erly, never get t o experience. And f or t hose people, my heart holds t he most f ear.

Vulnerability. The idea of opening up and showing your true colors. The things that make you t ick. The things you enjoy, especially the t hings you enjoy. Those are especially terrif ying. I once read that , in our generat ion, it is not hat e t hat rears it's ugly head, but love. Love is the ult imat e betrayal. The one emotion that unwillingly turns our insides to putt y and we f orget out inhibitions and the rock solid, tough image we have worked so hard to const ruct and shape is destroyed wit h a single action. We are no longer merely a carcass of ourselves, but the beaut if ul, catastrophic piece of art that we t ruly are. That we hide beneat h the layers and walls we have built to shut out crit icism and reject ion. We are bare and broken and that is terrif ying. "The only way to find true happiness is to risk being completely cut open.?

In order to be happy, we must become the very core of ourselves. We must st op hiding and, ult imat ely, we must s top f earing love. Our love f or ot hers. Our love f or things. When asked asked t o pick my f avorite song or book, I hesit at e, scared t hat someone will disagree and judge me f or t he things I hold dear to me. The things we

ICON:CHUCK PALAHNUIK love of t en reveal t o ot hers who we are, what we f eel and appreciat e in t he world and the possibilit y of being t old t hat may be wrong, is enough t o t uck us away in our boring carcasses. Being vulnerable and showing ot hers the things we love. That quot e earlier is f rom Chuck Palahnuik, t his mont h's icon. The best - selling aut hor has writ t en many works t hat I hold very close t o me. He writ es of people who are broken and nihilist ic, searching f or meaning and trapped wit hin hard shells t hey've surrounded themselves wit h. Loss of hope and loss of dreams, but reveals, more of t en t han not , t hat t here is a light at the end of t he t unnel, a saving grace. The only way to be happy (somet hing I t hink is saf e t o call a common goal of humanit y), it t o be vulnerable, to be open, and t o not be ashamed of t he things we love. 22

ULTIMATEGUIDETO: AMERICANHAUNTEDHOUSES

Okay y'all lemme just say I LOVE FALL. t he weat her, the atmosphere, the smells, bonf ires, sweaters, pumpkin spice lat te?s (yes i'm t hat girl), and of course HALLOWEEN. Halloween is basically the coolest holiday ever bc you get t o eat all t he candy you want and no one says anything about it. anot her t hing that ?s great about Halloween is scary movies. I LOVE SCARY MOVIES. personally,I t hink these are okay t o wat ch at any t ime of the year, but watching them during the month of October really makes t hem scary. BUT ANYWAYS, let?s get to what this art icle is really about * da da da* .... HAUNTED HOUSES. oh yes, t he joy of being chased wit h a chainsaw by a dude in a clown cost ume really excited people. let me just start of f by saying, i don?t necessarily enjoy haunted houses, t rails, mazes etc. t hey honest ly give me night mares just thinking about them and the only way I will go is if a cute boy is t here t o be my shield (i mean this lit erally man, I keep my eyes closed the whole t ime) BUT, since everyone really seems t o enjoy them I decided to do a lit tle searching and f ind the craziest haunted houses in America (no, i did not act ually go through these) These are in no specif ic order, but I do have t hem rated. if t hey are mildly scary there is one lit tle ghost at the top. the next level have 2, and t he most t errif ying ones have 3. SO LET?S GOOOOOOO HONORABLE MENTIONS: -

The 13t h Gate - Bat on Rouge Louisiana Net herworld - At lant a, Georgia House of Torment - Aust in, Texas The Darkness - St . Louis, Missouri Erebus - Pont iac, Michigan 23

1. Pennhurst Asylum locat ed in Pennhurst , Massachuset t s t his place is completely creepy. f irst of f let me tell you a little background of t his place. Pennhurst was built in 1908 to serve as a state school f or the mentally & physically ill patient s. t his place was H U G E. the propert y took up 120 acres of land and housed over 10,000 patients at a t ime. Pennhurst was a well f unct ioning communit y wit h a f irehouse, movie t heatre, general st ore, barbershop, greenhouse AND an auditorium. most of the buildings on site are connect ed by an underground t unnel. legend is, that Pennhurst act ually didn?t help the mentally ill at all. in f act , t hey did t he complet e opposit e. there were many cases made against the Pennhurst est ablishment that basically said t he st af f did things that were inhumane, unsanit ary, and dangerous. SO WHO IN THERE RIGHT MIND WOULD WANNA GO AND MAKE A HAUNTED HOUSE IN THIS ALREADY CREEPY & HAUNTED PLACE????? of course the one and only, RANDY BATES. as in ?The Bat es Motel?, Randy Bat es. he decided to make a haunted att ract ion that would scare even the t oughest of people. SO WITH THAT BEING SAID: here's the legend? Pennhurst Asylum closed in 1986 due to mistreat ment allegations and the propert y was lef t to rot? unt il now. A surgeon f rom Eastern Austria was said t o have worked in the Pennhurst f acilit y where he perf ormed many unort hodox experiment s t o t ort ure his patients. however, one night the Doctor and many people on his t eam died in an ?accidental? f ire locat ed on the second f loor of the Asylum. some inmates in this f acility managed t o escape but have been known to ret urn to wait f or any explorers willing to enter t he abandoned complex. it ?s said t hat t he surgical staf f is still there too looking & waiting f or new test subjects.

2.McKamey Manor

McKamey

LOL i t hought the last one was scary enough but goodness I was so wrong..t o say it?s scary is honestly an understat ement .. i?m t alking t his makes you wanna cry and pray at the same time. The McKamey Manor is so t errif ying t hat you have t o sign a consent f orm and you must be at least 18 to even enter. McKamey Manor is located in San Diego, Calif ornia. With it?s extremely realistic scare tact ics, it def init ely earns a spot of t he t op 5 scariest haunted houses in America. f irst of all, these people are allowed to t ouch you, grab you, f eed you disgust ing things, and throw ?blood? on you.. L O L NOPE YOU WILL NOT BE SEEING ME THERE. The legend of the McKamey Manor is this: the McKamey Asylum was creat ed in t he 1950?s, where the warden of the asylum was anything but humane to the patients there. He would clone t he pat ient s in order to sell their extra body parts f or prof it. However, one pat ient named Mary Parker managed to get away f rom the warden and killed him wit h his own axe. It ?s said that Miss. Mary Parker is st ill roaming the halls of the Manor looking f or her next vict im. Oh and by t he way, if you see her, be sure not to look her in the eyes. 24

3. Dent Schoolhouse Locat ed in Cincinnat i, Ohio t his place is a real- lif e haunted house. there are many urban legends about the Dent Schoolhouse t hat t ell of a janitor who kidnapped & murdered several children and then hid t hem in the walls and pipes in t he basement. the children that went missing were usually ?problem? children. at f irst t hey would dissappear 2- 3 at a time but the number soon escalated to 7- 8 at a t ime. many of t he children att ending t he Dent Schoolhouse would complain of a smell coming f rom the basement but when t he janit or was questioned he said it was because of pipes. It ?s said that t o t his day, the children who were murdered in the schoolhouse still roam the halls and basement. the janit or was also said t o have returned b t o the schoolhouse several years af t er the school was closed down.. his body was never f ound. but don?t worry, you can f ind him roaming the halls of the school and ?taking care of ? any t respassers t hat take a look at his home in the basement.

Terror Behind the Walls

4.Terror Behind t he Walls; East ern St at e Penit entiary ok idk about y?all but prisons f reak me out . it doesn?t matter if they?re haunted or not . even driving by a prison gives me t he chills. so when someone decided to make a haunted house in a St at e Penit entiary, t hey knew what t hey were doing. the Eastern St at e Penit entiary has 7 dif f erent sect ions that are int ended t o scare t he crap out of you by having crazy ?prisoners? on the loose that were killed there years bef ore. and while t his place really doesn?t have much of a back story, it is st ill equally t errif ying. It ?s def init ely a must- see. Honestly, I think I could handle this one :- ) WELL THERE YA HAVE IT FOLKS, t hose are some of the top haunted houses in the USA. these are int ended t o be f un and t errif ying at t he same time. so if you like screaming like a baby and getting the lif e scared out of you, t his is t he place t o go! ! i hope everyone has a FANTASTIC Fall. eat all the candy you want , watch scary movies, (don?t f orget caramel apples), and stay saf e <3 unt il next time, alex :- )

MEET: RYNEBROWNELL

I got in touch with Ryne via e-mail to discuss his photography and his biggest fear

So, t el l us a l it t l e bit about yoursel f (int erest s, f un f act s) and what not . Hey, my name is Ryne Brownell and I am a commercial phot ography student at Ohio University. Int erests, hmmmmm. I don?t exercise much ot her than going out to skat eboard every now and again, so I guess you could say I?m interested in being lazy. Oh yeah, I?m getting into graphic design and t rying t o t each myself that. And obviously I?m interested in photography and phot o related t hings.

What got you int o phot ography and what 's so appeal ing t o you about it ? The desire to create and inspire others to pursue what they love to do is why I take and want to continue taking pictures. The most appealing part about being a photographer is the confidence a camera in your hand gives you. I'm normally a pretty shy person so the empowerment the camera gives me acts as an excuse to put myself into situations I wouldn?t normally put myself into.

Biggest inspirat ion? Who or what is your muse? I act ually have a f ew. This guy on t witter, @ERIKSAEVI, was the person who initially got me interest ed in t aking pict ures because of all of these photo sets he would post. He was the f irst photographer t hat I remember paying att ent ion to (I f ollowed him around 3 years ago). I would recommend checking him out , t he stuf f he?s been posting recently is incredible. Also, Michael O?Neil (htt p://mone.al) is anot her f avorite of mine. His style is the style I want to be able to do when I make a career out of my photography. What got me int erested in him was an interview he did with a quart erly magazine call The Great Discont ent. You should check it out. 27

Is col l ege cool and/ or scary? I'm kinda t errif ied t o st art t hat chapt er in my l if e. College is t errif ying. The whole spectrum of people that exist s here makes up f or that though. People f eel more f ree t o be t hemselves while at college, which is a wonderf ul thing.

What 's your f avorit e t hing about t hat aspect ? I like the openness of t he whole experience. I don?t f eel conf ined anymore.

Okay, now we're going t o do t he second part of our int erview where I ask you some random/ f un quest ions. What 's under your bed? Lit erally a t elevision and a f ew boxes of Goldf ish.

Somet hing or someone you miss most f rom chil dhood? I don?t miss anyt hing. I t ry not t o t hink about the past too much.

Woul d you rat her have someone's t rust or t heir l ove? Oh man t his is a hard one. Uh, t heir trust. Probably that. Feeling unt rust ed is the worst. Also, love cannot come bef ore t rust .

Is imit at ion real l y t he sincerest f orm of f l at t ery? Yes.

And, l ast l y, t o f it wit h t his mont h's t heme of f ear: what scares you t he most and why? My t endency t o cut corners. I want to be able to do things to my f ullest potential all the time. WILDTHANGZ:SHARKS the most feared animal in the world and why they aren't as scary as we think

Wit h all the ooky spooky t hings happening in October, may as well bring up most f eared animal in the world, the shark! Personally I'm more f earf ul of spiders (they're creepy crawly! ) The f ear is mostly based of t he f ear of being att acked * insert jaws theme song* yet on average there are about 80 shark att acks yearly HOWEVER over half of these were provoked! ! (people going up to t hem/messing wit h t hem/f ishing t hem) Out of the millions of beach goers across the world that was it ! And what can we expect of t hem? We're in their home, making it our playground! In 2013 researchers at t he Universit y of South Carolina discovered yet another species of shark in t heir coast al areas. It 's a t ype of hammerhead, which is identical to the Caroline hammerhead by glance. Yet this new species has 10 less vert ebrate! While most see shark as a t error * insert jaws theme song* not all sharks are even aggressive towards humans. For the most part , nurse sharks are very docile, to the point that it's saf e to pet them and int eract with t hem. Many aquariums have an area set up where you are able to touch them, to help people underst and sharks are all bad! Like all animals these deep sea f riends need to be prot ect ed, and the best way to do so is to educate people of why they att ack and how t o prevent them! They're not too f ar f rom us, just swimming t hrough lif e t rying not t o be t he lef t shark. -B

TWOSENTENCEHORRORSTORIES I have a conf ession: I'm a sucker f or scary st ories. I was t hat kid who would buy t he book of scary st ories f rom the book f air and turn of f all t he light s in my closet and read t hem unt il I was scared to death and couldn't sleep. Recent ly, there seems t o be a t rend wit h f it t ing as much det ail as you can int o a sentence or two, whether it's movie reviews or book plot s, and more recent ly, scary stories. And I must conf ess...they're terrif ying. I compiled a compilat ion of my f avorit e t wo sent ence scary stories f rom around the int erwebs, so t urn of f your light s, grab a f lashlight , and enjoy. I begin tucking him into bed and he tells me, ?Daddy check for monsters under my bed.? I look underneath for his amusement and see him, another him, under the bed, staring back at me quivering and whispering, ?Daddy there?s somebody on my bed.?

The longer I wore it the more it grew on me. She had such pretty skin.

Don't be scared of the monsters, just look for them. Look to your left, to your right, under your bed, behind your dresser, in your closet but never look up, she hates being seen.

I can?t move, breathe, speak or hear and it?s so dark all the time. If I knew it would be this lonely, I would have been cremated instead.

After working a hard day, I came home to see my girlfriend cradling our child. I didn't know which was more frightening, seeing my dead girlfriend and stillborn child, or knowing that someone broke into my apartment to place them there.

My daughter won?t stop crying and screaming in the middle of the night. I visit her grave and ask her to stop, but it doesn?t help.

The covers are always a safe place in my bed, everyone?s out and I?m home alone, I slip between the covers, trying not to think bad thoughts. In complete darkness I whisper to myself, ?Is it stupid that I?m afraid??, ?Don?t worry, friend, they can?t get us in here?, it whispers back.
