KILLER STILL AT LARGE

IT’S WELLY-ON-SEA

Third anniversary yet £10,000 reward remains unclaimed

LAST month marked the third anniversary of Karoly ‘Charlie’ Varga being found dead at his home in Cannon Street, Wellingborough. Police believe that Charlie had been viciously assaulted in his home with a hatchet-like weapon on the afternoon of Wednesday July 27, 2011, shortly after he had let an unidentified visitor into his home. While of Hungarian descent, 76-year-old grandfather ‘Charlie’ Varga had lived in the UK since the 1950s and was very much a local Wellingborough man. Northamptonshire Police are appealing for anybody who finds the murder weapon or abandoned black and grey Lonsdale training shoes to contact them. Detective Chief Inspec-

tor Martin Kinchin said: “Even after three years, this murder remains an open investigation and I still believe it can still be solved. The case is reviewed whenever there is an advance in forensic science, but key to solving the case would be the discovery of the murder weapon and the killer’s training shoes.” The murder weapon and the key to Mr Varga’s back door were taken from

the scene by the killer who would have needed to dispose of the weapon, and could have hidden it anywhere in the Cannon Street area, or further afield. The murderer also would have needed to dispose of his clothing, including a pair of black and grey Lonsdale training shoes. The shoes were visable in CCTV footage of the potential offender entering Mr Varga’s house, thus police have been able to establish what he was wearing. DCI Kinchin added: “While many materials decompose over time, items such as the murder weapon and the killer’s shoes would be likely to survive to this day and finding these items would be a major breakthrough. If the murderer did not destroy these items, they would certainly want to

hide them, so they could be lying undiscovered. “The murderer would probably not want to travel very far with the weapon, so it may have been pushed into a hedge, thrown into a garden, or hidden in the rubbish and undergrowth of the many alleys and overgrown areas around the street off Cannon Street and Clark Road. “It may even be that somebody has later found the weapon in their garden and kept it, not realising its significance.” A £10,000 reward offered by Charlie’s family remains unclaimed for information leading to the conviction of the killer. Northamptonshire Police are currently preparing a file for the coroner to allow Karoly ‘Charlie’ Varga’s full inquest to be heard at a later date.

SHOPPERS are urged to get their buckets and spades out and visit Wellingborough town centre’s seaside extravaganza this month. The town might be more than 70 miles from the nearest beach, but a 130-square metre beach is currently located in Market Street, near McDonald’s, to delight local shoppers and entertain their families. The beach runs until August 30, between 10am and 4pm, with deckchairs, buckets and spades and sounds of the sea to capture the ‘by the sea’ experience. Specially made Wellingborough rock is available at nearby Colemans and a graffiti artist has painted the walls of the beach. There are Zumba classes organised by Fit4Her Ladies Boutique Gym on Tuesdays from 10am and staff from Waendel Leisure Centre are delivering exercise classes such as Fit Steps, Insanity, GRiT and Fun House Fit Club for Kids.
