Choir team take on BBC quiz icons

IN the run-up to Easter, a group of women from Cottingham and Middleton’s ‘Valley Voice’ choir put their musical notes to one side in favour of swotting up, ready for a battle of wits with BBC TV’s mighty ‘Eggheads’. Debbie Smith, Mary Knott, Sue Aspinall, Joanne Leaning and Jane Smith – ably assisted by reserve Ally Chorlton – gave the formidable UK quizzers a good run for their £5,000 prize money last Thursday (24th), but had to admit defeat. It had a familiar ring . . . Valley Voice team captain Mary Knott, a retired nurse, said: “A team of our menfolk from the village pitched their wits against the Eggheads a couple of years ago as ‘The Ramblers’. They came an admirable second, but we thought we’d have a go to see if we could do any better! “We had a great time recording the show up in Glasgow and it was a real pleasure to meet Jeremy Vine and the Eggheads.” Freelance communications consultant Jane tackled Film and TV questions against Egghead Chris Hughes – and knocked him out of the final line-up. But singing teacher Debbie, although reaching the ‘sudden death’ stage against Barry Simmons, narrowly lost the Music round. Finance manager Jo lost to Pat Gibson in Art and Books and Mary was knocked out after the History round against CJ de Mooi. So, it was left to Jane and NHS consultant Sue to unsuccessfully take on four Eggheads in the final. But, as the ladies displayed at the start of the broadcast, they would no doubt beat the Eggheads at singing! Singing the praises of a musical career SOME people just dream about getting a foothold in the music industry; some enter talent contests, others send their CV or recordings into production studios. Then they keep their fingers crossed. But in Corby, entering the music industry is a much more serious business. Last month, Corby Business Academy hosted workshops to give pupils an invaluable insight into the worlds of songwriting and production. They were presented by singer songwriter Phoebe Katis and former Loughborough College Music Technology lecturer and producer Claire Spooner. It was all part of UK Music’s ‘Skills and Schools’ programme, which aims to encourage more young people towards careers in the music industry through talks and workshops from leading industry figures. UPSKILLING: Students at Corby were learning about careers in the music industry. Full story and more pictures, page 6.
