Esta semana Chicago celebró el Día de los Muertos, festividad enfocada en reuniones de amigos y familia para orar por y recordar a amigos y familiares fallecidos, y ayudar a apoyar su viaje espiritual. Tradiciones conectadas con la festividad incluyen armar altares privados llamados ofrendas, honrando al fallecido usando calaveras de azúcar, caléndulas y la comida y bebida favoritas del fallecido y visitando tumbas con estos como regalos. This week Chicago celebrated the Day of the Dead, a holiday focused on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. Visitors also leave possessions of the deceased at the graves. EXTRA asked our readers to share photos of their loved ones or the altars that they created.Q

In this week’s issue we profiled the Logan Square not-for-profit, which reuses or recycles used computer equipment that might otherwise become hazardous waste and makes computer technology more accessible to those who lack financial means or technical knowledge. In other news, we have an opinion piece focused on the “White People Out of Pilsen” sticker that made headlines after it was placed on the Bow Truss Coffee in Pilsen. ería fácil perder FreeGeek Chicago al pasar. La puerta de entrada a la organización no lucrativa más bien está frente a un callejón en el lado oeste de la ex tienda Woolworth, 3411 oeste de Av. Diversey. Y una vez cruzada la puerta uno se halla con signos dirigiéndolo abajo por unas escaleras al sótano del edificio, lleno de un tesoro de laptops, computadoras y otros componentes electrónicos. “Somos una organización dirigida por voluntarios que acepta donativos, como partes de computadoras viejas, las tomamos, las desbaratamos y usamos las partes buenas para crear computadoras nuevas con sistemas operativos Linux”, dijo Evelyn López, voluntaria de FreeGeek Chicago. “Así, las vendemos a precio barato a gente que no tiene computadora y normalmente no tendría medios para comprar una”. Hay sistemas PC de FreeGeek Chicago desde $40 y laptops desde $75 y van preinstaladas con el Xubuntu Linux 12.04, sistema operativo simple que es un recurso alternativo a Windows de Microsoft y Mac OS de Apple. La primera FreeGeek, apodada “The Mothership”, abrió en Portland, Oregon en 2000. Donativos que FreeGeek Chicago aceptará incluyen laptops, desktops, tablets, monitores LCD y CRT, teclados y ratones, teléfonos celulares, consolas de juegos de video y juegos, y otro equipo relativo a computadoras, partes y materiales. t’d be easy to miss FreeGeek Chicago when walking past it. The door to the not-for-profit’s entrance is actually facing an alley on the west side of the former Woolworth’s store at 3411 W. Diversey Ave. And once you walk through their door you’re met with signs directing you down a flight of old stairs to the building’s basement, which is filled with a treasure trove of laptops, computers and other electronic components. “We’re a volunteer run organization that takes donations, like old computer parts and old computers. We take them, tear them apart and use the parts that are good to build new computers with Linux operating systems,” said Evelyn Lopez, a volunteer with FreeGeek Chicago. “So we can sell them at a cheaper price to people who don’t have computers who wouldn’t normally have the means to buy one.” A basic PC system from FreeGeek Chicago starts at $40 while laptops start at $75 and are pre-installed with the Xubuntu Linux 12.04, a fast, simple operating system that’s an open source alternative to Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s Mac OS. Since then its core concepts of reusing or recycling used computer equipment that might otherwise become hazardous waste, and making computer technology more accessible to those who lack financial means or technical knowledge, has expanded to over a dozen locations across the United States. FreeGeek Chicago has been at active in the Windy City, operating out of its vast basement location in the Logan Square neighborhood, for the past decade. Founded by NPOTechs and Logan Square CTC, the organization just celebrated its 10-year anniversary last month. “There are certain items that we just can’t take because it costs us money to recycle them,” said Terry Topczewski, another vol-

unteer who manages FreeGeek Chicago’s incoming donations. “People sometimes try to donate their televisions or stereos from the 1950s, those giant ones with the mesh. We can’t use those.” Donations that FreeGeek Chicago will accept include laptops, desktops, tablets, LCD monitors and CRT monitors, keyboards and mice, cell phones, video game consoles and games, and other computer-related hardware, parts, and materials. Instructions on how to prepare donations for drop-off can be found at freegeekchicago.org. In addition to accepting donations and selling refurbished computers, FreeGeek Chicago also hosts open volunteer hours on Friday

and Sunday where people can learn how to work on computers. Known as “OpenBuild” days, the program allows volunteers to learn how to build a working computer system. “You learn by doing here,” said Lopez. “And we’re always in need of new volunteers.” To give a sense FreeGeek Chicago’s operating scale, in 2014 Lopez said the organization had 832 volunteers recycle over 37,000 pounds of electronic material over about 18,000 hours of volunteer service. She said the OpenBuild program also allows volunteers who complete 24 hours of service to earn $75 in FreeGeek Rewards that can be used in FreeGeek’s store in order to get a free refurbished computer. And going into the holiday season, FreeGeek Chicago is busy gearing up for its Black Saturday sale on Nov. 28. “We have a big space with lots of computer stuff, and it just keeps on coming,” said Lopez. “There’s obviously a need for recycling this sort of material and we’re the only one in Chicago that refurbishes computers using Linux, at least that we’ve heard of.” More information on the Black Saturday sale and other FreeGeek Chicago events can be found at freegeekchicago.org. CPD minority outreach compiled by EXTRA Newspaper Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Superintendent Garry McCarthy today announced that the city is accepting applications to join the Chicago Police Department for the first time since 2013. A written exam will be administered in February 2016 to those who apply. CPD is also launching a campaign to increase minority participation in the written exam, and ultimately continue the Department’s effort to increase diversity among its ranks. Diciendo, “Blancos fuera de Pilsen”, la calcomanía se ha vuelto raíz de un problema personal más profundo para residentes por mucho tiempo de Pilsen, tanto como aquéllos nuevos en el área. Para poner esto en contexto, Café Bow Truss en Pilsen se ha vuelto afiche niño no oficial del aburguesamiento de uno de los históricos barrios mexicanos ya que sirve “café especialidad” a precios que avergonzarían a Dunkin Donuts. Es un tipo de anormalidad en un barrio primordialmente de clase trabajadora, donde el ingreso medio en 2013 era menos de $40,000, según city-data.com. Así que vecinos están molestos, preocupados y ansiosos del futuro de Pilsen. En su superficie “Blancos fuera de Pilsen” puede parecer enfocado en la economía del café especialidad, pero no. Se trata de no ser forzado fuera de un barrio que uno llama hogar. “Entendemos que Pilsen a nadie pertenece, pero siempre ha sido y esperamos que siga siendo de una comunidad de clase trabajadora e inmigrante”, dice Byron Sigcho, miembro de la Junta de Alianza Pilsen. “Es importante que sigamos teniendo diálogo como comunidad… tal que podamos ser parte del cambio que queremos ver en nuestra comunidad”. Como parte de ese diálogo, Alianza Pilsen tiene una junta municipal tocante a lo sucedido en Café Bow Truss el 12 de noviembre a las 6 pm en la Biblioteca Rudy Lozano, 1805 S. Calle Loomis. Town Hall Meeting A sticker placed on Bow Truss Coffee’s façade at 1641 W 18th St. highlighted the fact that Pilsen has been in the middle of a cultural shift for some time now. Boasting, “White People Out of Pilsen,” the sticker has become the root of a deeper, personal problem for longtime residents of Pilsen as well as those who are new to the area. Reactions to the sticker on social media have some people calling it racist while others defending it who want to show support for someone willing to take a stand against gentrification. Regardless of your personal opinion, the reality is that the Pilsen community is changing. As more expensive boutique shops and businesses and so called “trendy residents” have moved into the area, it’s created a feeling for many longtime residents, regardless of their race, that they’re being shut out of their home.

To put this in context, Pilsen’s Bow Truss Coffee has become the unofficial poster child of the gentrification of one of Chicago’s historically Hispanic neighborhoods because it serves “specialty coffee” at prices that would make Dunkin Donuts blush. It’s kind of an abnormality in a predominantly working class neighborhood, where the median income in 2013 was in the low $40,000 according to city-data.com. So residents are understandably upset, worried and anxious about Pilsen’s future. On its surface “White People Out of Pilsen” may seem focused on the economics of specialty

coffee, but it isn’t. It’s a cry against rising property taxes and increased rent. It is not about White versus Latino, it is about providing stability and a community where people feel like they belong. It is not about being hostile to new residents. It’s about not being forced out of a neighborhood you call home. “We understand that Pilsen does not belong to anybody, but it has always been and we hope it continues to be a working class and immigrant community,” says Byron Sigcho, a Pilsen Alliance Board member. “It is important that we continue to have a dialogue as a community…so we can be part of the change we want to see in our community.” As part of this dialogue, Pilsen Alliance is hosting a town hall meeting regarding what happened at Bow Truss Coffee on Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. at Rudy Lozano Library, 1805 S. Loomis St. Bow Truss Coffee did not respond to EXTRA’s repeated requests for comment at press time. Q

CPS students score high marks in reading, math compiled by EXTRA Newspaper Building on their success in 2013, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students have again outpaced the academic growth of their national and state peers in both math and reading, according to the results of the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), known as the “Nation’s Report Card.� CPS grew in every category on the biannual assessment, and Chicago students’ gains were among the largest in the nation in both 8th grade math and 4th grade reading. “There is no doubt that our students are making tremendous academic progress and that our schools are on the rise – both of which are a direct result of the hard work by our

The state as a whole, by comparison, showed a growth of one point since 2003. The biannual NAEP tests capture fourth and eighth grade proďŹ ciency in math and reading to establish trend lines against state and national averages. Many of the eligible and uninsured are immigrants who have indicated that high cost, lack of information, limited language access and immigration status have prevented them from engaging with the healthcare system. In Chicago and Cook County, the areas with the highest numbers of non-English speakers are the same areas with the lowest number of unenrolled ACA eligible individuals. “Healthy Communities Cook County (HC3) has a mission to continually encourage all eligible Cook County residents to apply for the ACA, and we will work with our county commissioners to find a local health access policy solution for the 180,000 uninsurable county residents,” said Health Policy Director Luvia Quinones, of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights. vocadora que la anterior. Ellos han actuado en funciones agotadas para su gira “Blurryface”, cada vez llegando a nuevos límites. Éste es el cuarto álbum del grupo desde 2009. Actualmente pertenecen a la marca Fueled de Ramen. El viernes 20 de octubre, Echosmith abrió para 21 Pilotos en el Salón Rave/Eagles en Mil-

waukee, Wis. y EXTRA estuvo allí para atrapar una muestra de lo que Chicago puede esperar en próximas actuaciones locales. El 3 de diciembre, 21 Pilotos estará en el evento “The Night We Stole Christmas” en el Salón Aragón y otra vez en junio de 2016 en el Rosemont. Tyler Joseph y Josh Dun hacen música considerada por muchos un subgénero de pop llamado pop esquizoide, pero es mucho más que eso. Su paso firme al éxito ha sido emocionante para verlo. En una nota personal, se sabe que ellos dijeron hacer música “para hacer pensar a la gente”. Y lo hacen. En Milwaukee, asistentes al concierto revelaron saber que sólo hace dos años, 21 Pilotos hubo tocado en el sitio más pequeño escaleras abajo para un gentío de apenas 25. 21 Pilots: Not landing anytime soon by Amelia Orozco A piano, a drum set and two guys. That’s 21 Pilots, two friends from Columbus, Ohio making music that sticks. Consisting of their beats and their own lyrics, each song conveys some kind of message, and is more thought provoking than the last. They have been steadily performing sold out shows for their “Blurryface” tour, each time reaching new heights. This is the fourth album for the group since 2009. They are currently signed by the label Fueled by Ramen. On Friday, Oct. 30, Echosmith opened up for 21 Pilots at the Rave/Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee, Wis., and EXTRA was there to catch a glimpse of what Chicago can expect at upcoming local performances. On Dec. 3, 21 Pilots will be at “The Night We Stole Christmas” event at the Aragon Ballroom and again in June of 2016 at the Rosemont.

Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun are making music that is considered by many a subgenre of pop called schizoid pop, but it’s much more than that. It’s punk, it’s funk, it’s poetry in motion and just all-around creative genius. Opening up with “Dirty Little

Soul,” Joseph ascended the stage in a full skeleton costume, which meshed well with the pre-Halloween crowd. Dun pounded away the beat to an energized crowd. By the time they started “Stressed Out,” the crowd was singing along, not missing a beat. Joseph emerged with a full sheet covering up his face to emulate that “blurryface” concept and keeping the energy high, even jumping off his upright piano. The band’s future is anything but blurry. Their steady rise to success has been a thrill to watch. On a personal note, they have been known to say that they make music “to make people think.” And that they do. In Milwaukee, concertgoers reveled in knowing that only two short years before, 21 Pilots had played in the smaller venue downstairs to a mere crowd of 25.
