Fabricating Fictions & Cranky and Resistant Talks by Dr Philip Harris & Gemma Marmalade Dr Philip Harris, program leader for BA (Hons) Photography at the University of Derby, UK, in Fabricating Fictions: A Critique of Photographic Conventions and Their Assumed Authority will discuss a number of projects and his rationale for (mis)using obsolete cinematic media as a means to deal with cultural themes and political issues. Gemma Marmalade, Senior Lecturer in the BA (Hons) Photography program at the University of Derby, UK, in Cranky and Resistant: Values and Qualities of Analogue Cine-Media in a Digital Age will present examples of practice navigating the notion of the “subversive voice,” where imagined fictions are presented as evocative social and historical photographic truths.

2019 Emerging Photographer of the Year: Boon Ong ‘Our Closets’ Boon Ong, the recipient of the 2019 Emerging Photographer of the Year award, presents his solo show ‘Our Closets.’ Boon explored his personal coming out story through photography. Now he uses it to connect with others on their journeys out of their own closets. According to Ong, a closet is anything that holds us back from our full expression of self, whether sexuality, health, experiential stagnation or unfulfilling employment.

Projecting Illusions

The spectacle of the magic lantern show is reinterpreted, highlighting the social history of lantern slides in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Samuel de Lange presents photographs, drawings, seating, and written text as reflections on the histories of two seemingly disparate things: salt and photographic images.
