Barnaby Hall “EROS” - Fotografia
Some of my earliest memories of photography were long afternoons spent taking nude pictures of my first girlfriend. Needless to say there was some guilt as well as an exquisite feeling of naughtiness but I remember that unashamed youthful desire, mixed with teenage innocence, was clearly visible in both the facial expressions of the“model” and the attitude of the“photographer”. Since then I have maintained a healthy interest in photographing sex and nudity and although I am no longer innocent and my tastes have changed, I hope that I have managed to retain at least some of the awe I felt as a teenager! Obviously I’ve selected these pictures because I like them. To me, they are mysterious, compositionally pleasing, erotic and decorative. Exactly why is unimportant, so, instead of getting into a lengthy discourse about Eros and Art, I’m just going to say a little about each picture. Ingres.Bain Turc.detail - Ingres’s painting “Bain Turc” is an early memory. A moment when I realized that some of those paintings that we studied in Art History were actually sexy. This photograph is an imaginary detail. Wishful thinking? Coincidentally it happened to be number 36a on my last roll of black and white film and signified the point at which the photo session got deliciously out of control. Bill and Christine.detail - Bill was a TV cameraman and Christine was a waitress in new York City. They were friends of mine who used to give enthusiastic sex shows for extra pocket money. I wanted to shoot a picture to make a diptych with “Ingres.Bain Turc” and asked them to model for me. I like the tenderness of her kiss. Lips – A long and wild session with a couple of African dancers for Getty Images who needed to increase their stock of “minority imagery”. Despite the fact that they were naked, very uninhibited and had the most beautiful bodies, my favorite picture was a close up of their faces. Cherry – Summertime in the elevator of my mid town loft building in NYC . One of my neighbours had a red cherry hanging from his mouth. He looked terrific - I happened to have a camera and took a snapshot before he ate it. Smile- While trying unsuccessfully to take pictures to illustrate a story from erotic French book called “Behind Closed Doors”, I was struck by the lusty, voracious smile of the model. I Wanna Be You - This was a more successful attempt to illustrate one of the stories from the above book. A young ballerina in bed with her lover excites herself by pretending that she has a penis. The owner of the penis gave a patient and impressive performance..
