The Hippodrome - Bo’ness 10 Hope St Bo’ness EH51 0AA

Some 97 years after the first customers took their seats in the grand picture palace, The Hippodrome re-opens its doors to the public, recreating the golden age of cinema-going using 21st century technology. The A-listed building, brainchild of film-maker Louis Dickson and designed by local architect Matthew Steele, was opened on 11 March 1912, is a rare example of pre-art deco cinema architecture, and Scotland’s oldest purpose-built picture house. Having undergone extensive restoration as part of the Bo’ness Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), The Hippodrome has seen the 1926 decorative scheme reinstated, new seating installed and original seating restored, and digital and 35mm projectors fitted to offer the best cinema experience. Open 6 days a week Screening the best major new releases Independent films and classics. Tel: 01324 506850 www.falkirkcommunitytrust.org

A hundred years ago, this picture of Bruce and de Bohun by John Duncan failed to win the 600th anniversary art competition. The picture which did was not liked, as this protest poster shows.
