ART’S ALIVE AT THE STUDIO DOOR WRITTEN BY: PATRIC STILLMAN

“NORTH PARK AND THE ARTS GO TOGETHER LIKE MILK AND COOKIES.” - PATRIC STILLMAN, OWNER OF THE STUDIO DOOR

Patric Stillman, a local artist and creative entrepreneur, runs the North Park gallery and artist studios along North Park’s 30th Street corridor. Inside The Studio Door, creative entrepreneurs bustle in and out, walls are hung with diverse paintings and photographs by emerging professional artists, and interior windows allow visitors to peer into eight working artist studios. Tourists and locals alike visit regularly to shop, mingle, and discuss art as exhibitions change each month. The gallery has celebrated the flight of black birds in The Crow Show, the intersection of art and fashion in an exhibit simply entitled Fashion, and the regional arts exhibition 50 To Watch.

“Everything keeps moving steadily along,” Stillman said. “We’ve had good support from the visiting community of art lovers right from the start.” That community support was seen when Stillman was commissioned as a handful of California artists to participate in Milk Loves Art, a charity project produced by Got Milk? to benefit children living with cancer at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times. Through Milk Loves Art, Stillman painted a life-sized cow sculpture, which his fellow studio artists quickly encouraged him to name “Milkshake.” Stillman painted Milkshake in the storefront’s oversized windows, so the community could watch the progress from the sidewalk and offer support day and night. His artwork is expected to raise up to $5,000 in the project’s upcoming auction.

Each month, the Studio Door provides easy access to the arts with live music in the gallery, and popular Wine & Paint nights. In October, the gallery becomes the headquarters for Open Studios San Diego, a regional event that invites the public into artist studios across the southwest.

For Stillman and other artists’ continued projects, or to learn more about Stillman’s featured work at the Musee du Louvre in Paris and Scope Miami Beach, stop by the popular shop. The gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 7PM, and Sunday from noon to 4PM.
