ARCTIC
This itinerary is similar to Realm of the Polar Bear, but with even more time dedicated to searching for the King of the Arctic. You’ll enjoy three additional days searching the ice, oceans and tundra for polar bears, see lots of glaciers, walk close to reindeer and have the opportunity to fill a whole photo-book full of pictures with smiling seals lounging on ice floes. With the extra time, you may also have the opportunity to circumnavigate the archipelago. Really make the most of your Arctic adventure on this in-depth trip. DAY

Board your expedition ship and depart on your in-depth Arctic adventure. Svalbard is one of the few places on the planet to offer such a plethora of natural and historical extravaganzas. You will spend the next nine days exploring the remote polar regions. Amid ice-covered fjords, lofty mountains and calving glaciers, keep your eyes peeled for polar bears as they stalk the tundra looking for their next meal. You may be lucky enough to see a mother teaching her cubs to swim, a solitary, hunting male or capture a photo of a polar bear in the archetypal icy landscape. At a number of stops, you may also see reindeer, walrus, seals and Arctic foxes, while the captain will do his best to ensure you see the richest bird life. The longer itinerary also gives you the chance to circumnavigate the island of Spitsbergen - ice permitting, of course! Arrive in Longyearbyen early in the morning, for disembarkation after breakfast.

We were lucky enough to see quite a few polar bears, and one up really close: she came up to the bow of the ship for a good sniff, then wandered off before returning. Elizabeth Cowan
