Architectural Gems The experts at the East Midlands branch of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) shared their picks of the best architectural gems in Nottinghamshire with us. These must-see attractions are some of the most interesting buildings in Notts. How many have you been to?

Creswell Crags Museum and Education Centre

Located on the border of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, Creswell Crags is one of Britain’s most important archaeological and geological sites, with discoveries including the bones of woolly mammoth, hippopotamus, bison and rhinoceros, as well as delicately carved tools left behind by Ice Age hunters. Designed by OMI Architects, the Museum and Education Centre act as a gateway to the history and culture of the region and of the Crags themselves. In 2011 the building received a RIBA Award.

© Dan Hopkinson

Nottingham Contemporary

Situated in the historic Lace Market, Nottingham Contemporary is one of the largest contemporary art centres in the UK, exhibiting four to five major exhibitions a year. Designed by architects Caruso St John, it has four galleries, as well as a performance and film space, a learning room, study, shop and café bar. The building appears larger on the inside than outside, since much of its north end is sunk into the sandstone cliff that runs the length of the city centre. In 2010 Nottingham Contemporary won a RIBA Award.

Old Market Square

Situated in the heart of the city, Nottingham’s Old Market Square is the largest square of its kind in the UK. Re-designed by Gustafson Porter in 2004, the new-look Square opened in 2007 and received a RIBA Award in 2008. The square provides a vibrant hub for events taking place in the city throughout the year, including fairs, markets, family events, concerts and exhibitions. © David Baird

New Art Exchange

Designed by Hawkins/Brown Architects, the New Art Exchange in Nottingham won a RIBA Award in 2009. New Art Exchange is the largest space in the UK outside of London dedicated to culturally diverse contemporary visual arts, with a strong history of working with minority communities. It works with partners locally, nationally and internationally, connecting audiences and artists from all over the world with new and innovative collaborations and opportunities.

Attenborough Nature Centre

Opened by Sir David Attenborough in March 2005, the centre is surrounded by the tranquil waters of the beautiful Attenborough Nature Reserve, owned and managed by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. Designed by Groundworks Architects, this flagship sustainable building is perched on a small floating island on a lake within the former gravel works. In 2006 the Centre won a RIBA Award. The Nature Centre houses a host of facilities including meeting rooms, education facilities, interactive displays, a nature shop, and café.

250 years of lace making. 16 local breweries. 8 exquisite afternoon teas. 1 Nottinghamshire.

IN NOTTS WE LOVE

our locals Shopping in Notts with Mulberry at Le Chien et Moi Nottingham is a top place to hit the shops, and prides itself on having the second highest number of independent retailers outside of London. From speciality comic book stores to vintage boutiques and furniture retailers, you’ll be spoilt for choice if you’re looking for some retail therapy.

In Notts we love our artisan food with Joe Schneider, Stichelton Dairy

Nottinghamshire is full of temptation when it comes to locally produced food and drink. A penchant for preserves? Look no further. Batty for beers? We can help you. Champion of cheese? You’ve come to the right place! Joe Schneider is the owner of Stichelton Dairy on the beautiful Welbeck Estate in north Nottinghamshire. His unique Stichelton cheese was recently named as one of the top 10 British cheeses by the Independent newspaper.

We enjoyed a pow wow with resident basset hound Mulberry, from boutique, Le Chien Et Moi on Derby Road. What is your role at the shop? I’m in charge of meet & greet and I take my role very seriously! It’s my job to make sure everyone receives a friendly welcome and is made to feel at home. Can you tell us a bit about Le Chien Et Moi? We offer an eclectic mix of old and new, for you and your home. With an everchanging selection of stock no two visits are the same, so there’s always a reason to come back and see me! Mulberry at Le Chien et Moi

Joe Schneider

What makes Stichelton cheese so special? It’s an authentic farmhouse cheese, made from a single herd’s milk and produced on the historic Welbeck Estate. Do you have a favourite foodie place in Nottinghamshire? It has to be the Welbeck Farm Shop, most of the meat, bread, and cheese we eat is from there.

Where is the best spot in the shop to enjoy some doggy dreams? On a sunny day you’ll find me sprawled out on the floor opposite the front door, basking in the warmth and waiting to entice passers-by into the shop. When you take time off from the shop for walkies, whereabouts in Nottinghamshire do you enjoy taking your owners? Nottinghamshire has so many wonderful green spaces, parks and forests to choose from, so me and my fellow four-legged friends are spoilt for choice but I love Woodthorpe Park- it’s big enough for my little legs and there are lots of other friendly bow-wows to socialise with! Visit Derby Road to discover a number of wonderful independent shops including Le Chien et Moi, Brown Dog Interiors, Celia’s Vintage, Danish Homestore and The Worm that Turned. Celia’s Vintage

How long have you been a cheese maker? 18 years

Wellbeck Farm Shop

Best recipe for enjoying Stichelton cheese? Warm spinach salad, with stichelton, pine nuts, and bacon.

Welbeck Estate is home to a number of artisan food producers, and the School of Artisan Food. For your local food fix in Nottinghamshire visit one of our many wonderful farm shops; head to one of our speciality cafe, sample cheese at Colston Bassett, one of the only Stilton dairies in the country; or enjoy the heady experience of a brewery tour at one of our breweries such as Pheasantry Brewery, Castle Rock Brewery and Navigation Brewery. Castle Rock Brewery

www.experiencenottinghamshire.com

Celebrate our local traditions - from maypole dancing to lace making - or taste some of our famed local produce. Bramley apples, the best brewed beer, stilton cheese, artisan bread and homemade ice cream. Delightful!

We caught up with some of our favourite locals around the county, to find out from them about what makes local life in Nottinghamshire so special.

In Notts we love the underground with Bev Baker, City of Caves

Historic Notts with George Buchanan, Hodsock Priory

Nottingham is famed for its network of secret caves, the most extensive of its kind anywhere! From pubs inside caves to the City of Caves attraction, which features caves dating back to medieval times, come underground with us to find out about the world beneath Nottingham. Tell me again, just how many caves are beneath Nottingham? Nottingham is built on a maze over around 400 caves carved from sandstone. How did Nottingham come to have so many caves? The locals of Nottingham used to carve into the sandstone themselves pub est old d’s an gl En in order to make their living quarters, carving sandstone was the easiest method to create a home and cellars and provided the ideal conditions. How old are Nottingham’s caves? People have lived and worked in Nottingham’s cave system for over 10,000 years. Nottingham has been known as the ‘place of caves’ since 1900AD. Do you have a favourite cave? Sam Hancock’s cave, as this is where secret meetings would take place.

Inside the caves!

Want to experience underground Notts for yourself? Why not have a pint in a cave at the Hand & Heart pub or Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem? Take a tour of the caves beneath Nottingham Castle, visit the City of Caves, or see Ice Age art at the Creswell Crags caves in north Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire is home to a number of historic homes open to the public. From Lord Byron’s ancestral home at Newstead Abbey, to Thoresby Estate, Rufford Abbey, the Workhouse in Southwell and Mr Straw’s House in Worksop - which is an intriguing 1920s time capsule. We caught up with George Buchanan, who lives at Hodsock Priory in north Nottinghamshire. What’s it like calling Hodsock Priory home? It’s a great privilege and we consider ourselves very lucky to be custodians of Hodsock for this generation. We are inspired by the family history and all the people who have lived and worked here before us. We say we are borrowing Hodsock from our children rather than inheriting it from our parents - it’s all about passing it on to the next generation. We live in the Butler and Housekeeper’s pantries so we can be part of everything that goes on but blend discreetly into the background. We have a lot of fun - making the best of Hodsock as a family home and a beautiful place for our wedding guests and snowdrop visitors to enjoy. Snowdrops at Hodsock Priory

What can visitors expect when they visit? Secluded splendour whatever the event. Do you have a favourite time of year at the Priory? It has to be May for the peonies and bluebells.

A spring walk at Hodsock Priory

Any other recommended spots in the area? I love the Lime House Cafe at Welbeck where I can escape for a quick lunch and particularly good cake.

Hodsock Priory is a private estate in the north of Nottinghamshire, which George Buchanan and his family call home. Don’t miss their annual events such as snowdrop and bluebell displays, and fabulous outdoor theatre.

Wollaton Park is one of my favourite places. It’s absolutely beautiful there and if it’s sunny or snowy you’re guaranteed a fun day. The Hall is a beautiful Elizabethan mansion with lots to see inside and there’s always lots of exciting events throughout the year!

The Broadway has been showing the best international releases and art house titles since the sixties and has long been a creative hub in Nottingham. If you go you might even sit in the Paul Smith Auditorium which I opened in 2006 - it has seats covered in Paul Smith stripes.

Vicky McClure, actress

Sir Paul Smith, design legend

There is always plenty to see and do at Rufford Park and I’ve spent many happy Sundays wandering through the ancient monastery, enjoying the public art scattered around the grounds and visits to the craft centre.

Lakeside Arts Centre is one of my favourite places in Nottingham. Annual highlights include the International Children’s Theatre and Dance Festival in the summer and the Chinese New Year fireworks. And Lakeside borders Highfields Park so while we’re there we can go to the playpark and enjoy a walk around the boating lake too.

Newstead Abbey is one of my favourite places to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. I love the lakes, the wildlife and the history of the Abbey itself, but what I love most is kicking off my shoes and paddling in the cool, refreshing waterfall on a hot summer’s day! My favourite parts of the grounds are the Japanese gardens and the Rose garden. Faye Rollinson, Galleries of Justice Museum

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem may not look like one of England’s oldest pubs at first glance - but step inside this Nottingham institution and you’ll find yourself in a cave where people have been brewing and drinking since 1189. Order a pint and settle down on one of the padded leather benches that line the soft sandstone walls, as generations of people have done before you. Emma Field, VisitEngland

Want to know the best spots in Notts? We’ve done the leg work for you. From celebrities to lovely locals, we’ve asked them all for the best recommendations in the county, from cultural hotspots to internationally renowned sporting venues...

Newark is a charming market town with Georgian architecture, a castle, a wide variety of restaurants and pubs, not to mention the huge number of antique shops; just the place in fact, to spend a weekend. Only a short ride on the train from Nottingham or Lincoln, just over an hour from London, with a wealth of delightful B&Bs and hotels to stay in - a hidden gem!

Mr Straw’s House is a wonderful time capsule full of period features, but its fascination for me lies in the story of two brothers who, out of respect for their late parents, lived on the surface of the house. It’s a tender story of two unusual men who sought to preserve this Victorian home and consequently lived their lives out of time. You’ll have not seen anywhere like it before.

Lisa Holloway, Compton House

Paul Baker, Framework Knitters Museum

These days we’re lucky to live near to Trent Bridge, one of the best grounds in England. On a warm summer’s day with a Test match in full swing it’s a glorious place to be. Lord’s has the tradition but Trent Bridge has chaps in panama hats mingling with groups of comedy nuns. Unbeatable. Alan McDonald, author

Nottingham Contemporary is a building which, in itself is a work of art and which invariably contains exhibitions which make me smile. I love to wander though the galleries and marvel at the wit and the passion of the contributors. I also adore the fact that a world renowned facility sits in my home town, not in London or Manchester! William Ivory, playwright

A place held dear in many Nottingham hearts is the monument to the arts that is the Theatre Royal. Built and re-built by the greatest Victorian architects, it breathed life into a derelict part of old Nottingham and transformed the area in the middle of the 19th century into a new and elegant quarter of the town.
