It’s possible that the oldest Greenland shark is really, really old. Exactly how old? 512! Scientists are able to determine this by analyzing the animal’s cornea.
A National Historical Landmark, Cape May is chock-full of Victorian buildings that many believe are haunted — we were even featured on Haunted Towns, a television program on Destination America. According to Craig McManus (above), author of The Ghosts of Cape May book series, the spirits who linger in America’s oldest seaside resort are not the Hollywood kind; you won’t find them popping out of dark closets to say ‘boo.’ “This is a very calming place with great energy,” McManus said. “Maybe some of these ghosts don’t rush to move on because they’ve always liked it here. Perhaps all they’re looking for is the suntan lotion.”

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ape May might have the most impressive collection of Victorian architecture in the country, if we don’t count San Francisco. It’s something that we should be very proud of. Then there’s one particular building that shouldn’t make any of us proud. Rather, we should be sad and frustrated. I know I’ve felt these emotions every time I drive past the old school on Franklin Street that has been quietly decaying for decades. This wonderful brick building came into existence in 1928 as an elementary school for Cape May’s African-American community. That changed (thankfully) 20 years later when New Jersey outlawed segregation. But the building later became vacant and fell into disrepair. In 2002, the Center for Community Arts signed a 25-year lease with the aim of converting it into a community center, but the CCA has never seemed to possess the funding or infrastructure to see the project through, although you cannot fault the organization for lack of effort.
More than a year ago, the city mooted plans to move the library to Franklin Street, creating the kind of vibrant community center befitting this great building. The county has thrown its support, and financial weight, behind the idea, though these things do tend to take a while to happen. Before this CAN happen, the members of city council would need to approve it, with a minimum vote of 4-1. I don’t know about you, but I don’t see matters like libraries as political footballs. However, I’m worried
there’s a pretty deep schism on council — there are a lot of 3-2 votes happening, and I hope that stubborness and defiance aren’t getting in the way of good policy-making. You can educate yourself on the proposal by attending a town hall meeting at Convention Hall this Wednesday, May 1 at 6pm. Turn up and see a presentation on the proposal and then take the opportunity to talk to your local council member about it. That’s democracy in action! I have little room to address the Kate Smith controversy, but I don’t envy the decision the Hume family, owners of Sunset Beach, have to make about whether or not to continue the scandalized singer’s broadcast of God Bless America at their summer flag-lowering ceremonies. Whatever your views (and I think we know very little at this stage), the image of her statue wrapped in a black cloth outside the Flyers’ stadium seemed surreal and a little ridiculous. I trust the Humes will take their time before reacting to the usual social media-stoked furore.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Delaney’s on the mall. The server: Maria, who was attentive and friendly. We’d trust our ice tea needs (hey, it was a work day) with her any time! The menu: Overwhelming. Between the American and Irish comfort fare, there are 28 apps, eight wing dishes, 11 raw bar selections, 10 burgers, 21 hot sandwiches, nine cold sandwiches, two side options, seven thin-crust pizzas, 13 soup and salad choices, six Irish favorites, 17 dinner entrées, eight kid plates and two desserts. That makes for a grand total of… [divide by seven, carry the four, find the square root…]... 142 choices! There is so much to sift through that Jack actually was NOT — for the first time in his life — ready to order four milliseconds after sitting. He even asked Maria for a few more minutes. Be still our hearts! Latest Trip Advisor review: Five stars from Jaim L. of South Reading, Virginia. “Solid family option,” she says. “You have picky, walk-weary kids and you’re not at all interested in fake food, definitely come here.” The Food: Gooey French onion soup, a jam-packed lobster roll with drawn butter and a Cajun burger with a not-too-spicy kick. Hit the spot. The conversation: We started off talking about Game of Thrones. Who will make it through today’s imminent battle? We’re pretty sure Brienne of Tarth is a goner, which is a real shame, and if she dies before she gets in some passionate Westeros necking with Ser Jaime, we’re filing a complaint with Winterfell’s HR department. The other conversation: We quickly moved on from the fantasy of Game of Thrones to real-life happenings that more closely resemble the plot of House of Cards. Controversial property deals! Scheming politicians! Heartless ice zombies! (No, wait, we’re mixing up our characters here…) We can’t name names, but suffice to say there’s been some intrigue on the Cape in recent weeks. The consensus: Summer is coming. Stopping at Delaney’s should be as high on your priority list as “murdering my brothers” is on Cersei Lannister’s.

All the matters, murder and mayhem (we’re exaggerating) from Cape May City Council, by Susan Tischler QUOTE OF THE NIGHT Council Member Shaine Meier: “We could talk about parking all night long.” City Solicitor Frank Corrado: “We’ve already done that.” Referring to the marathon discussion regarding a proposed ordinance to increase parking meter prices in key areas of the city. THE GOOD NEWS Kudos to CMPD Officer Eric Lashley, who was recently promoted to sergeant. Always a good energy moment to see Chief Tony Marino announcing the promotion of an officer with the rank and file in the audience. Sergeant Lashley is in charge of the summer program which recruits, trains and supervisors summer officers. PUT ON YOUR DANCING SHOES City Council passed a resolution making the first week in May each year Coast Guard Community Week. This year the event will take place from April 27 to May 4 and will include a ball at the Wildwood Convention Hall which is open to the public.
TAXES UP Council passed the 2019 budget by a 4-1 vote, increasing taxes by $1.25. What does that mean to you? If you own a $500,000 home in Cape May, it will cost you $62.50 a year more than you were paying. Why did it go up? The city is undertaking its own recycling collection because the cost of renewing the contract with the old provider would have increased 200% (OOPS: Not 2% as we stated in the previous article. We lost a couple of zeros along the way) and necessitates the hiring of staff to perform the task. The city also hired three new firemen. Was
there much opposition? Not from the public. Taxpayers Association spokesman Bill Seeger missed his cue and made his comments at the end of the meeting, although it didn’t sound like the association opposed the budget increase. Council members Zack Mullock and Stacy Sheehan raised objections and concerns. Sheehan grilled city auditor Leon Costello regarding her suggestion that all departments be scaled back by 5%. Costello and City Manager and CFO Neil Young gave her a detailed answer, but it all came down to: No, we can’t do that. Mullock criticized the city for not obtaining more grants to offset some of the projects but Meier said the grant writers were doing a fine job. Costello said some grants which the city will receive cannot be included because they have not come in yet. At the end of it, the vote was 4-1 — Mullock being the lone dissenter. EXIT ZERO point, City Council approved an ordinance which will double the parking fees on and around the Washington Street Mall area. Currently, it is $1 an hour. That will go to $2 an hour effective May 14 in yet another 3-2 vote. Mullock and Sheehan were the two nay votes. A marathon public hearing brought members of the Washington Street Mall Assoc.’s Business Improvement District (BID) to the podium to speak mostly against the ordinance which originally called for fee increases for the beachfront area as well as the Mall. BID board member Chris Cooke said he was “disappointed this resolution (aka ordinance) has gotten this far.” He said the price hike would prove “detrimental to our city.” BID President Deb Barth asked why the parking hike did not coincide with the city’s plan to provide a free shuttle service to outlining parking areas like Cape May Elementary School. The projected revenue from the price hike could net the city an additional $400,000$500,000 in revenue, according to City Manager Neil Young. Barth asked, “where’s that money going? Not to the Mall merchants. What were you thinking?” Parking Advisory co-chair Bonnie Cassells said the committee “did their research.” Their thinking was “performance pricing” driven — in other words to put people who prefer to park in the premium spots in the position of paying more. Those willing to walk a bit would pay the $1 an hour fee and those, employees for example, who are most price-conscious would park in the hinterlands where parking is free. This is where Part Two of their plan kicks in. Once the city agrees on a provider (eight companies have bid on the estimated $80,000 contract), the city will provide a free shuttle service to schlepp worker bees, residents and tourists about the city. As is their custom, council
April 25, 2019 members Sheehan and Mullock opposed the ordinance. Sheehan agreed with mall merchants that the high price to shop would discourage shoppers who could easily choose to shop elsewhere like Stone Harbor, where the parking is still $1 an hour. She also questioned the fact that the discriminatory pricing would cause confusion for tourists who might mistake the $1 an hour parking with the $2 an hour area. Mullock opposed the parking hike, maintaining that “Cape May has worked hard to be a family-friendly town” and doubling the parking fees would discourage families, especially those parking along the beachfront. He also expressed disappointment that the transportation aspect of the plan was not rolled into the ordinance. WHAT CAME NEXT? Deputy Mayor Tricia Hendricks asked Mullock if he “supported the idea of longrange planning so that some of the revenue” outlined in the ordinance could be used to gradually take away the meters in the city and replace them with the kiosks that currently surround the Mall area. Mullock countered with “I would absolutely agree that long-term planning is necessary but frankly that is what is missing in this ordinance.” Sheehan said that her suggestion to raise the meters a quarter per hour across the board could generate $250,000, which would more than pay for meter removal and the jitney service. Hendricks shot back, “I don’t think you understand how expensive it is to removed meters and maintain them,” concluding that Sheehan “better get a grasp on that.” HERE HE COMES TO SAVE THE DAY…! Weighing in before the vote, Meier predicted that the new trolley service the city plans to launch this summer with parking revenues would be a “catastrophic success.”

To that end, he proposed an amendment to the ordinance (which was already prepared) keeping the parking fees the same on the beachfront and raising them in the Mall area. Why discriminate? Meier said, “People don’t go to the beach to spend money. They go to the shopping area to spend money,” ERGO – Performance Parking aka shoppers will pay the price. I SEE YOUR AMENDMENT AND RAISE ANOTHER Sheehan proposed an amendment of her own — that the meter fees be raised 25 cents per hour across the board maintaining that the $250,000 revenue generated would be more than enough to cover meter replacement, the trolley shuttle and the purchase of kiosks to replace the meters if it is done gradually. The amendment garnered applause in the audience but not so much on council. Although Mullock seconded the amendment, the motion failed and council passed the Meier-amended ordinance by — you guessed it — a 3-2 vote. IT’S DEJA VU... ALL OVER AGAIN Council passed yet another resolution (one in 2016, one in 2017) letting the feds know that the City of Cape May would like the post office to have a handicap ramp. Meier said Congressman Jeff Van Drew’s office called him and asked him to get the resolution updated. Which they did in a 5-0 vote, which the feds will ignore. Allegedly the reason being that they cannot just do the ramp. In for a penny. In for a pound. The whole building would have to be ADA compliant. WAS IT SOMETHING I SAID? Public Safety Building (PSB) Committee member and former acting chair Barney Dougherty resigned from the committee during the Public Comment portion of the April 16 council meeting. Dougherty held the position of vice-chair
April 25, 2019 of the committee until the death of former Mayor and chair Jerry Gaffney last year and was acting chair of the committee until the April 2 council meeting in which Dougherty was replaced by the appointment of PSB secretary Kate Wyatt. Dougherty has been critical of the proposed plan to house the fire department and the police station under the same roof, maintaining the space needed was inadequate for the foot print. Prior to his resignation he admitted that he was “a little disappointed” at being passed over, having served the city most of his adult life, specifically, on the fire department for 25 years, including time served as chief. Citing unfinished PSB business, he said he wanted a chance to “straighten out the RFP (Request for Proposal)” which he found to be f lawed. Bottom line regarding the PSB Committee? He said, “It should never have been formed in the first place.” He maintained the project should have been handled by the city manager, the engineer and council and in forming the committee the council was straying from the city manager-council form of government. HEY, WHAT ABOUT US? Councilmembers Sheehan and Mullock complained — again — about being kept out of the loop. This time the issue was a meeting between the city and USA architects. Sheehan wanted to know when the meeting took place, who was in attendance and what the outcome of it was. City Manager Young was in attendance as well as council liaison Meier, who said it was no more than a meet-and-greet. However, Mullock maintained that if PSB committee members were in attendance — namely PSB chair Kate Wyatt, the secretary as well as the police and fire chiefs — it was a committee meeting which should have been publicized under the sunshine laws.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
ot saying I’m cooler than most of you, I’m just saying I spent this past weekend doing cooler things than most of you. And by “most of you” I mean everyone who’s not a fighter jet pilot, professional athlete or adult film star. (In the spirit of this just-passed Easter, did you know the guy who played Peter in the movie of Jesus Christ Superstar went on to a long career in adult films? I can hear you Googling from here…) What did I do that was so cool, you might ask? Shut up and I’ll tell you, I might answer. For the first time ever, all three of my ongoing current musical concerns kicked your ass on the same weekend. Well, not really a weekend — between the hours of 7pm Friday and 8pm Saturday. And that’s pretty cool. Friday night my Beatles band, Love Me Dudes, kicked off Easter weekend at Carney’s with an awesome show that ended with, fittingly, a biblical rain. Wife Cathrine picked me up in the Highlander (I know you know I have a new Highlander, I just like typing
it) and, about halfway through packing up, I made a wisecrack that caused her to leave me, literally, standing in the rain. Now, I’ve made a million wisecracks to my wife in the 25 years I’ve known her, and this one didn’t seem like a Leave Him In The Rain type of wisecrack. If anything, it seemed like a Shut The Hell Up kind of wisecrack, with maybe a little Rub The Temples thrown in. Anyway, she came back and we spent the next 20 minutes in a fraught silence taking the longest possible route home. Marriage is a blessing. But the show was great. Carney’s has
done a great job on their remodel, the brick oven pizza is the real thing, and I especially love the in-house promotional materials that play on a few of the TVs and appear to be updated early and often, as pics and vids from our March 15 show were up there, as well as clips from singer-songwriter and the recently completed jazz fest. It’s great stuff. Kudos! We have one more Beatles show at Carney’s this spring on Memorial Day Monday, May 27. This one is a Beatles open mic, so if you want to play or sing a few tunes, hit me up and we’ll put it together. All you need is love! And your own guitar. Saturday 4/20 (insert marijuana joke here) O’Brien & Joyce reunited for an afternoon gig at the Brown Room. It started a little slow but by the end we had the place rocking, as usual. My wing man, Tim Joyce, has had so many pieces cut off him recently he showed up looking like Claude Rains in The Invisible Man, but none of this affected his guitar playing, which remained painfully average. (It’s okay, Tim never reads this…) This marked the end of our winter Brown Room shows; we

start our residency at the Rusty Nail on Monday, May 6, as sure a sign of the onset of summer as pasty white legs, socks with sandals and terrible driving. Tim knew I sang the night before and had a full night of Billy Joel music in front of me, so he only made me sing about 95% of our Brown Room songs. Sometimes I could just give him the biggest hug. In the face. With my fist. (Tim’s been training as a boxer and could most certainly kick my ass, but he’s missing some pieces so I just might be able to slide a jab or two in there…) Anyway, it’s always a pleasure to play the Brown Room. Though the room has been physically changed, its soul is intact. I then zipped up Route 9… actually, zipped is a strong word… I dutifully made my may, light-by-light, up Route 9 and into North Wildwood for Billy Joel Night at the Anglesea Pub, and it was an absolute zoo. Turns out there are a lot of Billy Joel fans off Exit 6. Who knew? In fact, there are so many Billy Joel fans in Wildwood it took us an hour to load in and set up our gear. By our scheduled start time of 8pm I had just about carried in my last speaker. By 830pm, drums and musical instruments were being plugged in. By 9pm I was on my second beer. At 9:05pm I sang, “1… 2… a-1-2-3-4!” and we opened with “A Matter of Trust.” The crowd roared its approval and what followed was one of the great nights of music I’ve ever experienced. (Even if one woman insisted on continually requesting “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama.” Kick rocks, lady!) Song after song they were right there with us. Anglesea Pub is an intimate space, and there’s an immediacy to your connection with an audience. And this crowd felt like the seventh member of the band. It was just awesome. But… it’s Wildwood, so none of you care, so I’ll move on. Fun Fact: Did you know that EVERY Billy Joel song can have a 45-60 second intro when your lead singer spends all day drinking coffee and water to keep his
April 25, 2019 throat warm and hydrated and then has to pee every five minutes later that night? It’s true. No apologies so far this week, so I got that going for me. Apology of the Week: Ya make one mild Catholic joke in your column and freakin’ Notre Dame burns down. God is my homie, but this seemed a disproportionate response. Shade Master of the Week: EZ chief Jack Wright, who threw me under several buses in his self-interview in the Exit Zero color issue. First, who does a self-interview? Second, IF THE KID HAD SAID DIESEL, I WOULD HAVE PUT DIESEL IN THE TRUCK!!! Birding weirdos Tom “Big Sexy” Johnson and Dave La Puma (really? La Puma?) were both recently featured in Exit Zero, which can mean only one thing. STEEL CAGE DEATH MATCH! Of course, a steel cage death match between weirdo birders means they just stare at each other through binoculars from 500 paces while making notes on each other’s plumage until one of them needs a sandwich. I’m not sure if Andy Reeves was trying to impress his date or win my love, but I think he did both with that monster tip he left me the other night. (Monster tip? Phrasing, Terry, phrasing…) Andy (Andrew to his friends) has been a fixture on the Cape May music scene for going on a decade now, and will hopefully be a fixture at table 34 of Exit Zero Filling Station for another decade. You can usually find him somewhere in the vicinity of the Mad Batter making all the girls cry over his rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Congratulations on the completion of construction on the west half of Elmira Street! If we pull together as a nation, I’m sure we can fix the east end by Christmas. And just like that I’m out of room. (Wendy Redelico gave me a firm staring-at Saturday, so I’m keeping it zipped.) The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
miss our dinosaurs. The thought came to mind when I fell asleep on the little-known Cape May Subway and woke up at 81st Street in New York City. I had intended to travel from the grand station hidden beneath the Boiler Room in Congress Hall to the exclusive seafood restaurant (Shark Bites) inside the Concrete Ship, but I dozed off. The Natural History Museum is atop the subway, and it would been a shame to not have a look around, if only to scoff, and thus I stumbled on the new T-Rex exhibition. To my great disappointment, they only had life-sized models, none of which seemed capable of snatching up a visitor or two, even when prodded in the eye with my walking cane. Such a shame. I grew nostalgic for our dinosaur petting zoo. Those of you with long memories will recollect the original, back in the 1930s. That global adventurer, Wally Herbert, had brought a few eggs of unusual size back from his visit to The Lost World. We, of course, made most of them into a colossal omelette, but damned if the last few didn’t hatch, revealing an assortment of dinosaurs. They immediately fixed
on me as their mother, and I trained them to respond to a variety of whistled commands. This — as new ideas tend to in Cape May — worked a treat for a few weeks, and soon we had so many paying visitors (entry fee: 25c or the oldest member of your party) that we set up a permanent show on the beach (if you have not seen T-Rex play beach volleyball, you have not lived). From boogie-boarding titanosaurus to “catch the Shoebie” velociraptor hunts, we had the best of times. It all came undone a little when we per-

haps got a little bit over-ambitious. You would think we would learn, but there is an actual and medically proven genetic anomaly in Cape May folks which, as well as rendering us brave beyond measure, means that we possess not one lick of that trait known as “common sense”. Anyhoo, there I was, whistling up a storm as we raced our dinos in a one-mile sprint against a variety of out-own-town challengers (including but not limited to the famous Jesse Owens, a racehorse and a cheetah) when I incidentally glanced over at the “lads and lassies 18-23-year-old naked volleyball tourney” and inhaled my silver whistle in surprise and admiration. For the next 17 minutes, every breath delivered a range of random commands to the dinos. By the time a passerby delivered the Heimlich maneuver, the damage was done and every competitor and spectator had been eaten. Of course the dinos were all “killed”, by which I mean they were set loose in Wildwood. I am fairly sure several have survived, and are tending bar there to this day, and gently nudging the gene pool upwards.

reat wines start in the dirt, experts say, and a good glass of wine has a “sense of place.” Though wine is produced all over the world, in places ranging from Morocco to the Canary Islands to Wisconsin, the best wines tend to come from temperate places near the sea — places that have a lot in common with Cape May. But what if you don’t yet know what a good glass of wine tastes like? Relax, your wine-loving friends will tell you. They’ll assure you that there is a wine for everyone, and that any wine you like is a good wine. They’ll tell you that cooking with pinot grigio, prosecco or cabernet sauvignon can elevate your everyday chicken, fish, or even meatloaf. “The staff at the liquor store can show you plenty of drinkable $10 wines,” they say. You trust your friends, but just as you developed your appreciation of art and music by learning, you can enhance your enjoyment of wine when you know the vocabulary surrounding wine, the techniques for making it, and the foods that work best with it. Cape May’s reputation for
quality wines is growing, but Cape May is still a relative newcomer among wine producers. Local vintners combine the latest science and centuries of tradition to get the best out of their grapes, but they have yet to develop the exclusionary attitude of wine snobs. If you, too, are a wine newcomer, it’s a friendly place to learn. Start by getting your feet into that all-important dirt. Nothing beats an up-close-and-personal meeting with the grapes. If you have a few hours, consider a trolley ride along the Cape May Wine Trail. MAC lets you enjoy lunch, tours and tast-

The Movie Column

T
he 19th Annual Cape May Film Festival is this Saturday, April 27, at West Cape May Borough Hall. There will be a special feature on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:15pm. The movie is simply called Float. This film is about flying enthusiasts. No, I am not talking about hang gliding or small aircraft. These are pilots of a different kind. They use small, light airplanes made of balsa wood. Do you remember the kind you played with as a kid. What made them fly? Expert engineering and design, and one more thing... a rubber band. Ahh... Now you remember the kind of toy airplane you used to fly, right? How long were you able to keep it in the air? The planes these enthusiasts build are one-of-a-kind. The longest record for keeping one in the air has been an hour and a half. That’s where the design and engineering comes in. I’ve been to many competitions for these masterful creations. They are the closest thing to magic I’ve ever seen. No remote control, no batteries, only
what your mind and hands can create. These airplanes are the quickest way to test scientific hypothesis without a laboratory. And one of the largest competitions for the pilots is in nearby Lakehurst, New Jersey. Records have been broken right here in the Garden State, right here in South Jersey. This film is about enthusiasts and their creations and what they can do. They design, build, plan, but once they let the aircraft go, all they can do is watch to see what happens. Kind of like having children,
right? How much control do we have in that area of life? The same is true here with the airplanes. Does that sound a little Zen to you? That is exactly what these competitions and airplanes engender — a sense of mindfulness, a sense of being at peace and centered and far away from the fast-paced struggles of life. And the airplanes are beautiful to behold... in flight or not (but especially in flight). Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from the English scientist Michael Faraday: “Nothing is too wonderful to be true.” Why do we golf? Why do we sail boats? Why do we get enthused about birdwatching? All of us in Cape May know that motives are sometimes not easily explained. Sometimes we do things not for money or fame but because of the way it makes us feel. Come learn by these enthusiasts spend so much of their time and energy on these beautiful works of art. Dear Answer Lady My brother has lost yet another job. This time with the post office. A good job. He said they gave him a route that was an hour away. Well, of course they did. He’s the new kid on the block. He has to pay his dues. He’s clueless. He has three kids. His wife acts like it’s no big deal and I worry about my nieces and nephew. My mother thinks he was perfectly justified in his irresponsible behavior. And our uncle got him the job, which reflects badly on him. Is there anything I can do to make him see it’s not all about him? — Exasperated Sister Dear Exasperated No — there is not. He’s a grown man. His situation is unfortunate but not your concern, especially if both your mother as well as his wife are enabling him. What you can do is plan some little trips with your nieces and nephew to Cape May County Zoo, some miniature golf outings as the weather gets better to places like Sunset Beach and Cape May Miniature Golf. A trip to Dellas Five and Dime’s soda fountain would be fun. In other words, be there for them when they need you.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
he birding community lost a giant this spring. On April 11, Peter Bacinski (aka The Great Bacinski) shed his mortal form and entered the terminal stage of life, becoming pure energy. We who knew him are dismayed to think that his heartfelt laugh will not be heard on the hawk watch this fall, nor will we ever again be treated to his face-creasing smile. A gifted teacher, few can claim to have ushered more birders into our ranks than the affable, knowledgeable Peter B. I first met him in May 1977, when he, CMBO’s founding director and I orchestrated New Jersey Audubon’s first Spring Birding Weekend. Pete showed the group a male Cerrulean Warbler at Rea Farm’s. My contribution was to misidentify a Chuck-willswidow at Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. Pete, as gracious as he was gifted, said nothing, allowing me to save face by fessing up. Pete would go on to co-lead hundreds of workshops with me and lead assorted tours
for New Jersey Audubon, but Forsythe was ever his favorite birding destination. In fact, it was while driving home from a Friends of Forsythe committee meeting that Pete’s great heart stopped beating, derailing plans for the field trip he planned to lead the next day. In retrospect, I realize that there was never a moment spent with Peter B that I was not having fun. Testimony to him, loss to us. In May, 1984, Pete was a member of the
birding team that won the first World Series of Birding by being the first to record over 200 species of birds in 24 hours in the state. Pete could identify any eastern warbler and any rock-and-roll song cut before 1984 in three notes or less. But his greatest contribution on that first World Series was taking a flagging Roger Peterson by the elbow at 11:00pm and guiding him back to our car after a successful rendezvous with Black Rail in Tuckahoe. Exhausted, none of us, except Pete, noting that Roger who at age 87 had reached his physical limit, had the presence of mind to come to Roger’s assistance. But this was typical of Pete, who was always there to lend a hand and who leaves behind legions of admirers. Fare thee well Pete, and say “Hi” to Roger for me. Now why don’t you try and find a Passenger Pigeon or Carolina Parakeet. I know you can’t count them on your Life List, but why not start an Afterlife List. And some day, when the team is all assembled again, what do you say we try and crack the 200 species barrier in Heaven?
