Salty Sirens On Fire At Elaine’s The Salty Sirens burlesque group performed their sold-out Fleur de Fantaisie show last weekend at Elaine’s, where guests fell into a Persian dream with their favorite feisty ladies. Foxy Angel, Lady Rae, Lydia Bloom, Stella Stiletto, Calliope St James and Countess Camilla Noir spent the evening seducing the crowd with their sexy sass and playful humor. The Sirens are sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What is surf stoke? When a wave crashes, creating sea spray, invisible charged particles called ions are released into the air. Breathing this air increases oxygen flow while triggering the release of endorphins and serotonin, the body’s “happiness” hormones. They don’t call it vitamin sea for nothing.

In 2011, Taylor Swift was spotted dining at The Lobster House. It’s not surprising — the 10-time Grammy winner has spoken of her “magical” childhood summers at the Jersey Shore. And that’s not a bad REPUTATION to have (see what we did there?).

Happy birthday to Cape May County Zoo, which turned 40! According to TripAdvisor, it’s third best in the nation. Think 550 happy animals representing 250 species — snow leopards to Chilean flamingos from Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch.

The Nature Center of Cape May was founded on the harbor in 1992 as a way for people to connect with the environment via education. Today, families come here to get up-close-and-personal with marine ecosystems and the cool (sometimes freaky) animals who live here: ghost crabs and salamanders and sharks, oh my! Whether it’s making art, honing outdoor skills or simply having an adventure you’re after, there’s likely a camp or activity for you.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — Answer is on page 18. You are driving a trolley in Cape May. At the first stop, two women get on. The second stop, three men get on and one woman gets off. At the third stop, three kids and their mom get on, and a man gets off. The trolley is white, and it is raining outside. What color is the trolley driver’s hair?

Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

don’t know if I’m just getting old and cranky (I recently read research that men aren’t supposed to turn into serious grumps ’til they’re 70, so I should have another 17.125 years left, at time of writing), but I spend a LOT of time either outwardly griping or internally fretting about the condition of our roads. It’s a great thing that Broadway and Seashore finally got a smooth and shiny new surface. That was a pot-holed mess, bad for a car’s shocks, worse for a cyclist’s gentler parts. But already they have started patching it! And not seamlessly, either. Is there a school where contractors go to learn how to totally mess up a road by mismatching materials? My neighbor Joe Johnson (hey, neighbor!) recently had work done on his property. The contractor dug up Stimpson Lane and followed up with the most appalling cover-up I’ve ever seen. For the last few months, every single time a truck went over the rut, the foundations of my house shook (which probably says as much about my foundations as it does the state of

the road repair). Recently it got patched. The rut has gone. But, jeez, it’s an eyesore. And, no, I’m not done. When are we getting the bicycle lanes repainted on Broadway and Seashore? I saw some clown last week driving on Seashore and they were halfway into the cycling lane. I’m going to assume they WOULDN’T do that if an actual cyclist was riding along. Still... why the delay? I am awaiting an answer from the county engineer on this subject, but it sure doesn’t look like it will be done by the holiday week-

end. So... ride carefully. While I’m griping, I think it’s high time Cape May offered a doggie beach. For 14 years I’ve been walking the pups at Higbee Beach and the woods (when it’s not tick season). But recently I’ve been switching things up and taking them around town. And that’s fine, but it really does suck that you can’t get on the promenade or anywhere near the beach. Wildwood has a doggie beach, which has been a great success. Why not take a section of Cape May’s VERY long beach (probably all the way down at Poverty) and allow dog owners the chance to be there between the hours of sunrise and 10am? Threaten heavy fines for those who don’t clean up (and impose them if they’re caught). The wife and I had great fun on doggie beaches in Maine last year. It was convivial — great for both humans and pups. Hotels and restaurants are going out of their way to cater to pups. I think it’s time the city followed suit. And, no, I don’t think dogs need to be allowed on the mall. Griping over. Happy holiday weekend!

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Liam Miller from Two Mile and Cabanas is up. How long have you been bartending? Five years. Favorite drink to make? A rum runner because they are delicious. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer snaps at me for a drink. Or when they say shout, “Hey bartender!” Biggest tip you ever received? $200 from JD. Another big tip from JD. We have to meet this guy! Wink wink.

BEER OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co The Bog - ABV: 3.90% What happens when you make a cranberry wheat and accidentally add too much cranberry? Embrace it and turn it into a shandy! A tart cranberry wheat beer blended with lemonade, it is light and refreshing while still packing tons of flavor.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Sunset Liquors Summer Water Rosè- $16.99 Dry, light and perfectly crisp with notes of strawberry, pink grapefruit and white peach. Summer-friendly fare like shellfish, ceviche and salads will pair swimmingly.

Produce Report Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that peas are in season. Did you know that the proper etiquette for eating peas is to squash them on the back of your fork? Also, peas are green because they are harvested when not fully mature. If peas are left to ripen, they turn yellow in color.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: The Ebbitt Room at The Virginia hotel. The porch: Sun-dappled and breezy. Before dinner, we chatted here with Ken Rowan (commercial pilot) and his wife Viviane (owner of White on Ocean Street), who were texting with their son Jordan (manager of The Virginia) and daughter-in-law Gabi (photographer who occasionally shoots for EZ). At the time, Gabi was hours from going into labor, and has since given birth to Lilo Alexandria (beautiful baby whose cheeks we want to put on a slice of toast). Cheers! The on-duty bartender: Leo from Latvia. He’s been in Cape May for 16 years and at The Ebbitt Room for 10 of them. He says nothing ever annoys him about his customers. Sure. The off-duty bartender: Jeremy, who was having a cocktail with his lovely wife Alina. He admits there is something that annoys him about HIS customers — when they walk in and ask, dejectedly, “Leo’s not working tonight?” The crying fit: Diane burst into tears for no good reason after her second cosmo. (Perhaps because the 80s called and asked for their drink back?) In her defense, she’s had a rollercoaster of a work week. The cosmo: We joke about it, but Leo really DOES make the best damn cosmo this side of Eleven Madison Park. (That’s the Manhattan restaurant where Big tells Carrie he’s engaged to Natasha — something else that makes Diane cry.) The food: Four of us shared many items, including but not limited to — an avocado salad with hearts of palm, sea beans, cara orange and radish; chargrilled oysters with chili-herb butter, pecorino and za’atar bread crumbs; a Beach Plum Farm braised Berkshire pork shank; and a burger on a brioche bun with pickled mushrooms, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese and herb parmesan fries. The consensus: Hi, chef Jason Hanin? We love you. The dessert: Another, ahem, burger. It’s nearly summer, which means it’s high time we start working on those winter bodies. Suggested new tagline: The Ebbitt Room: Food so good, it will bring you to tears. (She’ll never live it down.)

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

W

ell, somebody was in a snit last week. It seems my request that people stop asking me about booking their musical acts at Elaine’s came off as… well, it came off exactly as intended. Harsh. Now I am here to say that it was TOO harsh. It makes perfect sense for the artists I’d booked there in years previous to call me about this season and, upon finding out I was no longer there, ask if I knew who the new booking person was. It was just “too soon,” as the kids say. The local musician population is tight and friendly. My little rant was not aimed at anyone in particular and I apologize if anyone took specific offense. I specifically apologize to Dan Barry, Camille Peruto, Al Olivero and anyone else who called me over the winter when the wounds were still fresh. Three times in my life (93-99, 02-04, 15-17) I had my dream job, and three times I lost it. There will not be a fourth. That hurts. And when you hurt, sometimes you do or say things you shouldn’t. I bear no ill will towards Elaine’s. Unless it comes up organically in the

course of events, I promise leave it all alone. On to happier things… My own little theater project, The Undertow Players, takes the stage again at Iron Pier Craft House on Thursday the 31st. It’s a boutique house with about 40 seats, so make your reservations now at cabanasonthebeach. com, click SHOP. The show, Downton Stabbey, is a farcical murder-mystery-musical-comedy that is the BEST SHOW EVER according to my closest friends. There’s a murder, the reading of a will, some ghostly shenanigans and several semi-relevant pop songs. Our

April performance was a hoot and we hope to see you there for this one. I’m starting to question my friendship with Bob Daddona. We worked together last week and by “together” I mean I lifted about 500 40lb boxes while he sat on a stump, smoking a stogie, cackling like a prison warden. I even ate 50 hard-boiled eggs for lunch. (I kid, Bob did at least 20% of the work.) Lunch was Clary’s Country Kitchen in Court House, where I hadn’t been in probably 20 years. The food was outstanding (pulled pork tacos) and the service was even better. Kim Kubiak was discreet enough not to comment on my sweat-soaked shirt, and Bob is TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH HER. Ha! Guess we won’t be going there again for a while… Terry O’ke was bangin’ (Bumpin’? Lit? Whatever the kids say these days...) last Friday at Rio Station. And friggin’ lousy with cops! Officer Ken Cooper was there having dinner with the lovely Deana. When I asked them to move so I could place my speaker I was immediately read my rights. Ken asked me what was going on with the new Exit Zero

Filling Station and I had to admit, I really didn’t know. (Editor’s Note: End of June, Officer Ken.) But I do know I will likely be picking up a few serving shifts this summer. This will be job four of seven. Chief of Lower Township Police Bill Mastriani popped in later with his running mate Nick DiCarlo (never convicted) and it only took 47 tires to get him to sing “Beth” by Kiss. And it was the best version of that song I’d ever heard! (Hopefully, this is good for one Get Out of Jail Free.) Also ran into Robert Trent Jones (and his two lady friends, one of whom I’m sure was his wife, it just sounds sexier this way…). Said he saw me at Owen’s Pub in 2008 and had so much fun it, in part, led him to buy his house in North Wildwood. Not the first questionable decision made at a karaoke show. Warning of the Week: To Dave Landis. “New York State of Mind” is MY song. How dare you. (Oh god, I’m becoming one of them…) Jen Dowe came in around 10:30 and is, at the time you read this, still picking out her song. Jen was there with her bestest buddy Rob Cummiskey (who just MIGHT be the lead guitar player in a soon-to-be announced REM tribute band), which caused me to raise an eyebrow until Jen explained her longtime steady, Jason Hetherington, had dropped them off there together. AND THAT SHE AND JASON ARE GETTING MARRIED! ON MONDAY! OMG! (Congratulations and continued happiness to both of you Super Freaks.) Was a big week for two of the three O’Brien boys. Jackson, 15, went to the prom with the lovely Karli Witten. Jackson was resplendent in his grey suit with black accessories. Karli wowed in a blue off-the-shoulder number. (Am I saying this right? I know nothing about fashion. Obviously.) Owen, 16, attended with Katie “Sprinkles” King, both wearing navy, both looking amazing, though I slightly preferred Katie’s “Shrek” dress (she played Fiona).

May 24, 2018 There was a whole mess of good-looking kids down there at Congress Hall where a minimum of 400,000 photos were taken. Owen’s other two musketeers, Evan Warburton and Quinn Dougherty, were having a blast. Their dates, Carlie Eckel and Cassidy McFadden, were tolerating them. Everywhere you looked was a freshly scrubbed teenager in a nice suit and pretty hair, nervous about slow-dancing later that night. Those were the days… Not only did Owen attend the prom with an amazing girl, he was also on the Prom King court and was up for Mr LCMR on Thursday (he didn’t win, but took home the trophy for Best Introduction). All as a junior! I envy he and his cohorts their youth, where every day is filled with hope and terror for the future. I wrote some nice things about the lovely young ladies working at Magic Brain Cafélast week, but I zapped my notes and now they’re gone into the either like Spider-Man. Um, Spoiler Alert... So… thank you, nice coffee ladies for the making of the coffee. I know one of them was a McCool, which kinda sounds like a McDonald’s beverage. “Get an ice-cold frosty orange McCool with your happy meal at all participating restaurants. While supplies last.” Dammit, now I want McDonald’s. THANKS MAGIC BRAIN! Still can’t officially announce any more about the podcast project I’m working on, except to say that episode one of Talking Arts with Cape May Stage should be “on the air” by the time you read this, while episode two records this week. We’re real excited about it at Undertow Central. It’s been 12 years. Isn’t it time for a Murder-Oke! sequel? To support this and other upcoming projects from The Undertow Media (the official name of my fledgling production company), you can make a monthly pledge at Patreon.com/ terryoke1 or subscribe to YouTube.com/TerryNOBrien. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Suzanne Taylor, from Cape May who is an assistant at the Carriage Company. So who would she most like to share this bucket with? Bruce Springsteen! The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

love a royal wedding. The thought came to me as I performed the Heimlich Maneuver on Young Albert during the nuptials of the roguish Prince Harry and his pretty young American not-princess (more on that in a moment). Albert had been over-excited at the sermon given by the American pastor and choked on a piece of Union flag bunting. I confess I have never before performed the Heimlich on a small dog before, but he did cough up a dozen small flags, a length of “Hurrah!” printed ticker tape and my long-lost 1:24 scale model of Prince Philip. If you press tiny Philip’s back, he will say any one of a number of racially charged things at full volume: it is not acceptable, but I feel it keeps the spirit of the monarchy alive. Harry looked dashing for a ginger fella, and I was moved to forgive if not forget that time he dressed as a Nazi at a costume party: it is possible he was in fact dressed as his deceased relative, the Duke of Windsor. And the Markle lass is surely the most beautiful person to marry into the royal line since Camilla. I am irked that she cannot be a princess due to being

a commoner. No, do not rush for your muskets, or dump your artisanal tea in the harbor: they are every bit as elitist to their own countrymen: the ephemeral Di, who was a regular visitor to Cape May, was a princess only in the honorary sense. Of course, we had our own royalty as recently as the 1970s in Cape May: a casual comment by one of those annoying deposed Euro-Royals who took up residence here (those of duke status and above were granted land in Cape May: Barons and lower were sent

to Wildwood) to the Cape May ship’s captain Barry Bonneville, when asked about the crown still perched on his proud head, of “you take the damned thing!” was actually legally binding. Of course, Barry was no gentleman and used his new status and the crown to sow his seed far and wide, resulting in 398 different claimants to the throne when he passed away from a choking olive in the Mug. The whole thing led to a war of succession and a flurry of assassinations, poisonings, treachery and ludicrous heraldry. In the end, rival courts were set up in the Admiral and Congress Hall hotels. Mercenary armies were hired, canons were firing 24 hours a day and cavalry charges took place back and forth along the beach. Just a normal Friday night in season, you might say. But after the West Cape May Hugenots laid siege to the Stimpson Lane Tudors in the Admiral, and a shell demolished the building, there was much confusion, from which a dancing bear emerged with the crown. The older among you recall the short dreadful reign of The Ursine King, and we will not speak of that again.

S

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, yard sales on the island

pring cleaning conveniently coincides with the start of the busiest house rental season in Cape May. As some people are clearing out, others are in search of passable items that they can use for a few months. Yard sales — the ultimate in recycling — bring these two groups together. Yard sales are eco-friendly but they also offer other advantages. For the frugal, bargains abound. For the impatient, there is instant gratification. For the creative, there is the chance to turn a house from cookie-cutter to uniquely yours. Over the years, I’ve found curtains and curtain rods, musical equipment and furniture, usually sold with a side of cheery conversation. Grab your coffee, a fanny pack full of small bills and your sack of canvas bags, and go shopping. Some items are yard sale staples. Hobby gear, like fishing rods, easels and yarn, is usually a bargain, as is exercise equipment those weights may be a nagging reminder of a failed resolution. Single-use tools or kitchen appliances, like salad spinners or rice cook-

ers, are often looking for a new home. Special occasion outfits in children’s sizes are a good deal, because those darn kids rarely time their growth spurts so that the Communion suit can be used for next year’s band concert. In Cape May, bikes, beach chairs and sand toys are a good bet. Other items take a little imagination — maybe a fireplace screen becomes a wall hanging after a coat of paint, or a door becomes a headboard, or a shutter becomes the backdrop for a photo array. Outdoor furniture can be changed into indoor furniture, and vice versa. Imperfect items can find new life — the boards for

games with missing pieces become art; a jar full of dice and tokens adds a bit of whimsy to a shelf; pages from damaged books are transformed into a collage. If you’re brave — and sure that the items are not valuable antiques — cut things up. An old desk or table becomes two nightstands. An old television console becomes a bookshelf. Or, put things together — with a cushion, glue, and some screws, three unstable chairs can become a stable bench. You should avoid certain items at garage sales — electronics, makeup, and mattresses are obvious, but experts also say you should avoid non-stick cookware, helmets, car seats and cribs, for safety reasons. Find yard sales online, in local classified ads or look around for signs. The Kiwanis Club yard sale is a great place to start. Head to their clubhouse on Beach Avenue this Saturday, May 26, starting at 7:00am — expect to find a line by 6. There’s also a Community Yard Sale at Cape May City Elementary School, Saturday, June 2 from 8:00-2:00, rain or shine. Next week: Restaurant Week

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

S

uspension of disbelief. You know the concept: How well does a story ease you into its fantastic storyline so that you eventually buy into all the craziness it presents in the end. For the new Avengers Infinity War movie, suspension of disbelief is an understated way to put it. Try “disbelief ripped from your hands” instead. The latest installment in the superhero series is a crowd pleaser — most folks on the social media sites report liking it. It starts with a premise so fantastic it almost becomes relatable. End-of-the-world stuff, toying with the time/space continuum stuff. Yeah, small themes like that. Despite the grandiose threats to the entire universe, the film manages to pull off a little silliness as well. And if you’re a fan of “give me more superheroes,” this one has you covered! All your favorites are here (except X-Men and Ant-Man... they must be appearing in their own franchises later). Even the Guardians of the Galaxy are here. This works because the whole franchise is

Avengers Infinity War... epic stuff starting to look like a Star Wars epic more than a comic book. Is it me, or is it getting easier to have a million characters in one movie? I think I needed time to evolve into a better customer. Or maybe the good installments of these stories find better ways to incorporate these characters so they matter. Infinity War was a long movie... but it moved along at a good clip. And the ending was memorable (if not a cliffhanger).

Certainly I’ll be back to see how it all gets resolved. Thanks for your feedback, those who offered up some insights of their own for this flick. Yes, Darlene, it did drag out a little with many, many side trails—but I think most of them did take us somewhere new that led us to the end. Pete says, “When you start a war that begins with infinity, you’re setting up for something beyond epic. This one may not have been the best, but it didn’t suck either.” Looking ahead to some more of the summer flicks that we all love so much… Deadpool 2 has been released. This is a guilty pleasure for me... please don’t let it get out how I thought the first one was really entertaining despite being despicably uncouth. Then there’s Ant-Man and Wasp, a new film that picks up where the successful original left off. Solo is a Star Wars prequel that focuses on the early life of the famed character. As always feel free to email any comments you might have to tomhsims@aol. com to let me know what movies you’ve seen and what you thought.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Let me start by saying how much my husband and I love dogs. We have two labs and do everything we can to protect them from harm — as in fencing in our yard so they do no get out and get hit by a car. And then there is our neighbor who does not believe in fencing. Nor does he believe in dogs on leashes. “They should be able to run free,” he told us of his year-old golden retrievers. Last week they again escaped and ran rampant through the neighborhood for two hours until a neighbor found them swimming in his pool. Short of calling the police, is there a solution? We are near a busy street and we fear the worst now that summer is approaching. — Dogs with Boundaries Dear Boundaries The Answer Lady is sure there are some

Wise answers to perplexing questions

ordinances on the books which belie your neighbor’s philosophy, but do you really want to go that route? A hostile neighbor can be a vindictive neighbor. Perhaps some reeducation. A copy of Cesar’s Way or Dog Training for Dummies — hmmm, maybe not that one. Stick with Cesar. Cape Atlantic Books will order it if they don’t already carry it. Invite him and his goldens over for a Memorial Day barbecue and give him the book as a present. Perhaps when he sees how happy and well-behaved your labs are, he

will be inspired to follow suit. But you cannot make him comply to your way of thinking so be prepared for the consequences. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I love to entertain and have people stay with us. We have a beautiful home overlooking the bay and the sunsets are spectacular. Having a glass of wine with friends watching the sunset is our favorite thing to do. My best man and his wife visit us a couple of times a summer, but it bothers me that he arbitrarily goes to the wine rack and helps himself, never replenishing the wine they consume. By the way, we do not buy cheap wine. Is it inhospitable to say something? — Tapped Out Dear Tapped Next time he comes, hide the bloody wine, save for a bottle or two. When he asks if there is more wine, tell him how to get to Sunset Liquors. Obviously, you will not offer to pay. When he asks what happened to all the wine, tell him you were drinking too much and have decided to cut back. Cheers!

Bird Droppings

S

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

o the 35th World Series of Birding is history. Scores of teams, including teams from the UK, South Africa and Israel, competed in the annual quest to tally the greatest species of birds without leaving New Jersey. The winner was a youth team with 199 species. Utilizing the bird riches of the state, the team faced down morning rain in the north and evening thunderstorms in the south. My team, the New Jersey Audubon Wandering Tattlers, utilized a more modest and tempered strategy, starting and finishing in Cape May, accruing 120 bird species. Starting at Cape May Point at a civilized 5:00am, we wandered up to Belleplain State Forest to cash in on the wealth of southern breeders. However, migrant warblers were nonexistent. As is typical of “Big Day” birding, bonus birds helped balance Ma Nature’s stinginess. Almost unaccountably, the group missed black-crowned night-heron, a common Cape May breeder. By the time they stirred, we Tattlers were sipping and supping at Congress Hall, celebrating the successful day and an

ambition to raise $30,000 in pledges in support of NJ Audubon conservation initiatives. At Sunday’s awards brunch at the Grand Hotel, as team captains claimed the mic to expound upon their teams’ achievements, I could not help but think back to Charles Urner, whose name is emblazoned upon the Urner Cup, awarded to the first-place finisher. Charles, a Wall Street businessman, living in Elizabeth, NJ, pioneered the Big Day birding tradition back in the 1920s. Using a route that ran from the hills above Boonton

to Holgate, he and his cohorts never tallied more than 172 species in their May runs, a total eclipsed by teams in this year’s Limited Geographic Area category. It should be noted, however, that Urner and company did not have the benefit of the Garden State Parkway to speed them along, nor did they benefit from shared postings of birds during the day. In Urner’s time, the bird they most aspired to get was American oystercatcher, a common beach breeder in the county. In fact, there are five pairs between Cape May and Cape May Point. On the other hand, in 20 years, Urner recorded Canada goose only three times. Yes, the goose was once that rare in New Jersey. From the stage at the Grand, I surveyed the sea of faces and wondered what Charlie Urner would have made of the gathering, more birders assembled in a room than probably existed in New Jersey back when Urner and company blazed a trail for birders. Why New Jersey? I believe no state offers more ecological diversity than NJ, and I’ve seen them all.

ROONEY is a highly energetic young boy who loves to go for long, spirited walks. He is full of life and shows that by his enthusiastic attitude. Rooney prances in his kennel until harnessed and will just as willingly climb into your lap for a quick pet. Rooney is well mannered in the home, but would be best in an adult only household. Adopt today!

BOOMER is a one year old pup who was very stressed when he arrived at the shelter, but has become increasing friendly as he gets to know the volunteers and shelter staff. Boomer needs the full attention of someone who will be devoted to helping him relax and learn basic behavioral skills. Take a chance on this loving boy and adopt today!

QUINCEY is the favorite among all volunteers and staff at the shelter. He arrived in February 2016 as a stray. He was thin, scared, and he did not have good manners. Quincey has learned to politely greet people and walk nicely on his leash. Quincey is very affectionate and would be a loyal companion. Adopt this sweetheart today!
