Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

t’s that special time of year when you fill up the car with gas, drive an hour or so to the Hamilton Mall, pack yourself in amongst thousands of other desperate holiday shoppers, buy generic electronics, eat a snack at a nameless franchise, then drive the hour or so back home. Aaah, Christmas. Don’t you just love it? No, really, people, you don’t live in Oklahoma, or Misssouri or Egg Harbor. You don’t have to shop at the strip mall. You actually have access to a classic small town, one with a hardware store, lots of fine restaurants and an ever-improving stock of stores that sell the kind of quirky gifts that you should be giving at this time of year. Try and enjoy the ritual of Christmas shopping this year. Smell the roses while you browse, and put money into the local economy while you’re at it. And there are more opportunities than ever this year — the folks on the Washington Street Mall have got together to ensure that at least 30 stores will be open every single day until 8pm from now through December 23, to help with your holiday shopping. As a retailer (Exit Zero has stores on Sunset Boulevard and Beach Avenue), I can

BIRD IS THE WORD

tell you it’s a major commitment to stay open every day in the off-season. So how about you reward these local entrepreneurs by enjoying the very best of local shopping? I’ll bet you will be surprised at the quality and range of goodies that you will discover. Take a few minutes and look through these pages — there are gift ideas everywhere you look! Speaking of local entrepreneurs, I had the immense pleasure of co-hosting, with Curtis Bashaw and Jim Moffatt, a dinner for young business owners in the Congress Hall ballroom last Thursday. This was an event partly inspired by the

³

series of stories we ran on young business owners earlier this year. To cut a long story short, Exit Zero and Cape Resorts (owners of Congress Hall, Virginia Hotel, Rusty Nail, planet earth etc...) have launched an initiative that aims to recognize the work of the young entrepreneurs and sets out to support and inspire them as they make their considerable mark on this town. It was amazing to see so many cool and energetic young people gathering in one place. It’s not often I’m one of the oldest people in the room in Cape May, but it happened that night, I’m glad to say. So, yes, there were cars towed in the run-up to the West Cape May Christmas Parade. It’s a horrible thing to happen. But, as critical as I’ve been of Cape May Police Department in recent years, I think this town has, in the shape of Rob Sheehan, as caring and thoughtful a police chief as you could ever hope for. This was not a hit job. The fact is, the parade route had to be cleared — that the event had to be rescheduled for Sunday caused problems. If you genuinely feel you were towed through no fault of your own, contact the CMPD and they will be glad to help you.

The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

sk not what Santa Claus can do for you, ask what you can do for Santa Claus. I say this partly in jest, but partly because — and this is where, dear friends, you need to interrupt your weekly tradition of reading my words aloud to your entire family, because what I am about to say is not for the the ears of the young — this year I am restarting my tradition of visiting your home in the dead of night, with my bulging sack, and coming down your chimney. Ah, how the old jokes still amuse, eh? Anyways, in these austere times, I have decided to make the holidays special for all of you, regardless of your belief system: if you choose to welcome Santa as a mythical man being loosely co-opted into the Christian belief system, then that is who I shall be. If you consider him naught but a thinly veiled (and yet fat) incarnation of greed, then so be it. If he is an enemy of your faith, a demi-god who has no place in your home, then I respect your beliefs, but be warned: I WILL be delivering gifts and I

know karate. How did I know what to buy you? Well, I have been studying you all year, friends. Often with hi-powered night vision goggles. And I have purchased every one of you not what you declare you might want (gloves, for example) but what you secretly desire most. You look variously delighted, and worried. And so you should be. For I am the Santa of The Old Days, whose generosity is matched only by his brutal humor. So when you awake on December 25, and are faced with a fur-wrapped box (do

you think Old Days Santa had shiny paper with reindeer pictures handy? No he/I did not. He made do with what came to hand, whether it wanted to be made into wrapping material), think hard before you open, or before it opens itself. The kids should be just fine, other than those who really wanted a tiger or such. As for the grownups? Well, you know what you really want, and should plan accordingly. Did you wish to be young again? I hope you specified HOW young, or I will have decided for you (hint: I do love babies). Happiness? Did you say HOW that was to be reached? Did you know I invented a tickling machine? And that it can tickle someone for 100 hours before needing new batteries? And now I want you to look at your dog or cat and try and work out what exactly THEY wished for, deep in their wild hearts. Because Old Days Santa was the Santa of animals, too, you know. If you are looking into your pet’s eyes and they are looking away, shiftily, then you are in for a very memorable December 25, I assure you.

The Movie Column

W

Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society previews the holiday offerings

e’re getting close to the end of the year. Time to take in a movie or two after that holiday meal with the family. Hey, take them with you or don’t take them with you, I’m not going to judge. Either way, you can spend some great down time in front of the big screen with any number of great films this season. Okay I’m going to bypass (yet another) Night at the Museum and Horrible Bosses 2 (can’t believe the first one was popular enough to warrant a second), and the parade of other flicks you’ll see preview enough on commercials. But of films that you may not be aware of yet, here’s some gems you have to choose from: Song of the Sea: There is early praise for this animated feature from the same Oscar-nominated director of Secret of Kells (2010), Tomm Moore. The main character is a girl, the last of the selkies, who are women of Scottish legend who change from seals to people. She embarks on a mystical journey to free creatures trapped

French actress Marion Cotillard stars in Two Days, One Night in the modern world. American Sniper: Clint Eastwood directs Bradley Cooper as the US military sniper Chris Kyle. A true American hero, there was more to Kyle’s story than his skill with a rifle. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives through four tours of duty in Iraq, putting himself and his family in danger. Two Days, One Night: Sandra (played by French superstar Marion Cotillard) was released from the hospital to find that she

has lost her job. Management tells her the only way to keep it is to convince her co-workers to sacrifice their much-needed annual bonuses. She has one weekend to make it work. There are some loooong films (both about three hours) that are getting good preview acclaims; Beloved Sisters clocking in at nearly three hours tells the the story of two sisters who vow to share everything — even their lover! Winter Sleep is a film about a hotel that becomes a respite for people going through difficult times. Hollywood has a string of films that are already gaining some early criticism but with time to redeem themselves. Mark Walberg is a natural risk taker in The Gambler, and Angelina Jolie produces and directs an epic drama called Unbroken, about an Olympian and war hero, Louis Zamperini. So plenty to choose from this holiday season… much more than can be listed here. Why not email us at capemayfilm@hotmail. com and we’ll see if you want to meet up with some of your Cape May Film Society buddies at the movies!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, rock around the Christmas tree

inter is perfect for music. Sound seems to carry better on cold, crisp air. Long, chilly nights invite us to gather together, and, because we never know when a storm will leave us housebound, every night out seems special. Throw Christmas into the mix, and there’s a lot to sing about. Christmas carols have been sung since at least the 12th century, when the hymn, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” was set to music. The “First Noel” followed in the next century, and the 16- and 1700s brought a trickle of new songs. The Victorian era brought that trickle to a flood. As Victorians delighted in all the Christmas traditions Prince Albert brought from Germany, carol singing became popular winter entertainment. William Sandys published a collection entitled “Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern” in 1833, and it sold like hotcakes, especially after the publication of Dickens A Christmas Carol in 1843. Young people, in particular, joined choirs and gave shows, using practice and concerts as a respectable way to socialize during dull winter months. With the choir master as chaperone,

singles could mingle between songs, making the wait between holiday balls easier to bear. Young — and old — people still use music as an excuse to gather in the winter, and Cape May offers a variety of venues (chaperones optional). Willow Creek Winery hosts Fire Pit Friday featuring local musicians. Bars like Carney’s offer music on weekends. Congress Hall’s Brown Room offers “girl (or guy) and a guitar” music, while downstairs in the Boiler Room,

things get a little louder. There’s dance music on DJ Fridays, and rock bands on Saturday nights. For holiday music, the Episcopal Church of the Advent presents “Joyeux Noel! Christmas with The 13,” a choral ensemble, on December 12 at 7pm for $15. (609-884-3065.) The Cumberland County College Jazz Band and Wind Symphony offers a free concert at Convention Hall, on December 13 at 7:30, featuring “classic and contemporary holiday arrangements performed by fine regional community instrumentalists and vocalists.” On December 17, the Angelus Chorus offers a free concert at Convention Hall, featuring “contemporary seasonal music.” On Saturday, December 20 at 7pm, celebrities get into the act. Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Kermit the Frog and Al Pacino are all a part of “Celebrity Christmas,“ featuring the Maura McKinney Mastro and Frank Mastro. With comedy, characters and carols, the Mastros offer a free G-rated celebration of Christmas at Convention Hall. At Cape May Stage, “Merry Melodies” offers a mix of music (capemaystage.org). The little ones can enjoy stories and songs on Santa’s Trolley Ride, for $8. (609-884-5404).

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My parents are in their 60s and want nothing for Christmas except to see us gathered all together Christmas day, but my brothers and I don’t feel right about that. They have given us so much and to show up at their door empty handed leaves us feeling empty. There must be something we can give them. Any suggestions, Answer Lady? — Gift Challenged Dear Gift Challenged Why not give them something they can really use? Like help. I presume they still live in their house and that is a lot of work. The Answer Lady suggests calling Gofers and arrange for periodic house cleanings throughout the year. Then call

Cape Atlantic Landscaping and arrange for either seasonal work or weekly mowing and maintenance of the yard. Lastly, call the Washington Inn and treat your parents to a couple of lovely dinners catered by the best. The Answer lady hopes her own family reads this and does likewise. Merry Christmas! Dear Answer Lady I have a nice job, but my boss is a bit of a schlemiel and the thought of expending energy and money to buy him something

fills me with loathing and dread. However, not buying him anything will surely look bad. Is there any way I can weasel out of this gracefully? — Bah Humbug Dear Bah Humbug The Answer Lady’s heart is filled with joy to see you approaching the holidays mindful of the true meaning of Christmas. Set your animosity aside and choose something for him which he will find useful and by all means avoids anything of a personal nature. Perhaps a nice bottle of scotch from Sunset Liquors, or box fudge and assorted candies from The Original Fudge Kitchen, or a book from Cape Atlantic Book Company. Another suggestion is to pool your resources with other employees. In that case, the Answer Lady suggests a trip to Galvanic or Cotton Company with your eye on a nice sweater or jacket. He’ll still be a schlemiel but you can feel good that you rose above it all and did the right thing for the right reasons.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

JULIUS is a sweet boy with a ton of love to give. He is a student in the shelter’s training program, so he is learning to sit and walk on leash... and do fun tricks! Julius is also learning to relax in his crate, which will make transition to a new home smooth. Bonus: he likes other dogs. If you have one, bring ‘em by to meet our guy!

«

RUPERT is a catch who’d prefer a home with older kids and no cats. He is very smart and knows “sit” and “paw.” Rupert’s mom Sophie is at the shelter as well, and she is great, too... she showed Rupert how to play with the shelter employees. Bring him home, and he’ll continue making his mother proud by being a good boy.

«

CHASE is a stellar companion who was at the shelter with his brother Chaos... until Chaos got adopted. Chase is good with kids and other dogs, but he’d prefer a home with no cats. He is up to date on all vet work and is even neutered. All he needs now? A forever home to call his own. C’mon... how can you say no to that face?!

«

SABRINA is a sweet, wonderful snuggle puff... But only when she wants to be. (Typical cat, right?) She is a very independent little girl who knows what she wants. Sabrina can be quite playful but her favorite activity is sitting by a window and relaxing... maybe you could cuddle up beside a window with her.

«

BARNABAS is a hip senior guy looking for somewhere to live out his golden years. He is part of the seniors-forseniors program at the shelter, meaning he’s free to a person 62 or older. Barnabas had a pretty rough start, but this has only made him more of a cool character... and more deserving of a comfortable home.

«

TUX is a snuggler, for sure, whose owner was sent away. (We don’t know what that means, but we’re sure it wasn’t Tux’s fault!) It also wasn’t his fault when his sister Babs was taken to another shelter far away. If anyone deserves a break, it’s this guy... especially considering how darn sweet he is. Why not give yourself a holiday gift?
