Talk Of The Town GOINGS-ON AND GOSSIP IN AMERICA’S ORIGINAL SEASIDE RESORT

Mission, Accomplished Back in August, we wrote about Our Lady Star of the Sea Church on the Washington Street Mall and, more specifically, the many maintenance-related challenges you might expect from a building that was incorporated in 1848. At this point, the disrepair of the church’s breathtaking stained-glass windows was already being addressed, and had been for about six years. But that milliondollar project, coupled with the costs of a leaky roof and its inherent dramas — plaster falling on the head of the Blessed Mary, for instance — left the church with no option but to seek help from its neighbors. The SWIN, or Stop Water Intrusion Now, campaign was launched. “I see this project larger than a Catholic thing,” Our Lady Star of the Sea Business Manager Terry McGarvey told us. “This is a Cape May thing.” And, obviously, Cape May thought so, too. The church, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, set a fundraising goal of $600,000, and set its sights on hitting this target within 18 to 24 months. But last week, we ran into SWIN’s co-chairpersons, John and Janet Kerney, and they gave us this great bit of news: The goal has not only been met, but met in just four-and-a-half months… a Christmas miracle, if ever we’ve heard one. Or, maybe, not so much a miracle, as a generous show of support from a town that knows what strength there is in community — 527 parish families have donated, as well as 170 non-parishioners. Their money will go toward finishing repairs at Our Lady Star of the Sea, as well as repairing Saint Agnes Church in Cape May Point. When we saw them, John and Janet

Our Lady Star of the Sea reached their fundraising target of $600,000 18 months early!

were understandably beside themselves with gratitude for the groups (like the Charitable Exchange foundation), the locals, visitors, business owners, religious folk, lay people, and anonymous donors who all contributed to the success of the SWIN effort, as well as the other members of the SWIN Committee — Joe Bogle, George Catanese, Terry and Tom Christie, Bernie Haas, Earle Hughes, Joan and John Hunger, Bob Lamendola, Bill Murray, Mike Piron, Christine Rizzo, and John Tice — who worked tirelessly to get the message out. We thought it only appropriate to give them a shout-out ourselves. Congratulations to the members of Our Lady Star of the Sea, and to all nonmembers as well. This kind of coming together is what makes Cape May great.

Rest In Peace, Rick Fifty-nine-year-old West Cape May resident Rick Kaschak, who passed away unexpectedly on December 17, had a lot of loves. First, there was his family, which includes devoted girlfriend Shannon Oliver, 10 siblings, and 19 nieces and nephews. Then, there was his business. A veteran of the Navy and a former mechanic who moved to West Cape May in 2003, Rick operated Steaks Up in the Akroteria Outdoor Food Court on Beach Avenue. You might have seen him there, sporting his New York Giants shirt and, in his typical dry-sense-of humor-fashion, a paper bag over his head, because of his shame over being a Giants fan. And there was his community. “Every year at his home on Broadway,” said dear

friend Stephen Fischer, “Rick would host a party on the day of the West Cape May Christmas Parade that was open to everyone. People would bring food, drinks, desserts; it was always such a good time, and I’m so glad we got one more in this year.” When Rick wasn’t hosting his neighbors, he was helping them. “He was a very talented person,” Stephen said. “He was very handy. One time I had a plumbing problem; I called Rick and he was here in five minutes, after picking up parts at the hardware store. He was the kind of friend you could count on — always willing to help everyone, and always so happy and upbeat.” Rick, who played four to five times a week at the Cape May Tennis Club, was Stephen’s tennis doubles partner. “Whenever we won a match,” he told us, “Rick would always say ‘West is best,’ because we are both from West Cape May. Everybody at the club loved him.” Shortly before he passed away, Rick played one final match. “We’re going to miss him,” Stephen said. “He made so

many people happy in so many ways. He left us too young, but at least he went after doing something he loves.” Where To Bring Your Canned Goods Regular readers know just how much we love animals at Exit Zero — a love that’s second only to our great appreciation for how much this community loves animals. Case in point? Bob and Linda Steenrod of dog-friendly Billmae Cottage are once again doing their Animal Giving Tree. Each year, they collect dog and cat food, treats, toys, old but clean towels, blankets and bleach for cleaning,

all of which will be donated to Animal Outreach of Cape May County, as well as the Cape May County Animal Shelter. Items can be left under the tree on the Steenrod’s porch at 1015 Washington Street until January 8. If you’d like to make a monetary donation, checks can be made out to Paws and Stripes, a small non-profit (donations are tax deductible) that rescues shelter dogs and trains them as service dogs for veterans in need. The couple who runs the organization does so for no salary. Check out their website at pawsandstripes.org… then get thee to the Animal Giving tree. The First Big Event Of 2014 You know the deal — great music from the Irish Pipe Brigade, a great menu featuring the Scottish staple haggis (and vegetarian alternatives), great friends, great kilts, and an altogether spirited celebration of Robert Burns, the 18th -century Scottish poet who penned “Auld Lang Syne”. We’re talking about the 10th Annual Burns Supper, being

The Book Certificate Giveaway Of The Week

Every week we hand over a $25 spending voucher to an unsuspecting person, thanks to Cape Atlantic Book Company Who are you? I’m Barbara Hedrick, retired, and I am visiting from Reading, PA. How long are you in town for? Just three days. Do you come here often? No, this is my first time, I’m on a bus trip. How did you found out about Cape May? My son saw it advertised in a paper and so he signed us up. It’s a beautiful place! How do you spend your days? I live in a nice big house in a historic district, close to my son. I belong to the church, I’m busy with that, and the Red Hats. Do you like to read? I have quite a number of them. I usually look at thin books, so it doesn’t take me a long time to read them. Do you like electronic books? I have a Nook, but I prefer real books. PHOTOGRAPH AND INTERVIEW BY GABY URDA

The Movie Column

T

By Dottie Knapp, President of Cape May Film Festival

HE Screen Actors Guild Awards are being presented January 18, 2014, and I did a quick analysis of the nominations to see what stood out from among the great films and actors on the list. Something stood out very clearly. One film that we did not see in the Golden Globe Award nomination list that made the list in the Screen Actors Guild award is Forest Whitaker’s portrayal of Cecil Gaines in The Butler. In fact, the entire cast was nominated for the award of best ensemble, and Oprah Winfrey was nominated for a supporting actress award for her portrayal of Cecil’s wife, Gloria. Members of the Cape May Film Society took a field trip to see this film. All of us who went grew up in that period, and for us it was a history lesson that we agreed anybody our age but especially younger would benefit from. Although it is a story of one butler’s time of service in the White House, the movie was all about the civil rights movement. If you didn’t live through

The Butler received Oscar nominations, but was snubbed by the Golden Globes voters the civil rights movement (or even if you did but from only one side), this was a way to bring the story home. Even if you didn’t feel it at the time, you felt it now. Part of the reason for the cast nomination was the portrayal of various presidents over time. Robin Williams as Eisenhower (although this was very brief), Alan Rickman as Reagan (he comes out looking the best as does Jane Fonda as Nancy Regan), and Liev Schreiber’s Lyndon B.

Johnson as a f lawed, caurse person comes across wonderfully. Also contributing to the cast award is the other butlers that accompanied Whitaker in the story. Each one of these characters had a very different personality and different levels of intensity. Who knows why the Golden Globes snubbed The Butler. Maybe the non-USbased reviewers for that award did not recognize or appreciate a genuinely United States movement. Whatever the reason, it will be interesting to see if this film garners any Oscar nods. All of us who went on our outing believed it did deserve an award. Of course the larger question is: Does acting make or break a movie? Certainly, it can break it, but even the best cast cannot ensure a slam-dunk at the box office or among critics. Bottom line: The critical piece for any film is its writing! For that, we have to wait until the Writers Guild Award nominations! Look for that announcement soon — and if you have a comment please send it to capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

What The Heck Is It? Think you know what the object is? If so, you could win a $25 gift certificate! Just email coinsmilitaryandmore@comcast.net with your answer. Winner will be picked on Friday, January 10. Come browse our luxury showcases for rare coins, bullion, fine and estate jewelry, antiques, collectibles, military and historical memorabilia

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

AM proud of this year’s tree. I know, every year when you, my friends, visit The D’Catur Mansion to see the tree, you ooh and aah and swear that it is better than the last. Do you remember the year we hung Faberge Eggs from the branches? That went down a treat, though we had to deploy household staff with cudgels around the base to deter looters, and the sound of wood on skull, though relaxing, was not quite the festive ambience I had intended. That year we had a plan to dip every branch in liquid silver, to create a glittering marvel: in our enthusiasm we had not thought through the process of putting sapfilled wood into superheated molten metal, and the resulting explosion blew out every window in the mansion as well as flashsilver-plating three members of staff (they made for an effective if surprised-looking hat-and-coat stand). And I will never forget the time we imported a tree from Borneo, not realizing a pygmy headhunter was sleeping in the foliage: only after a half dozen guests

and staff vanished and a similar number of tiny shrunken heads appeared as decorations did we add two and two and call Ernie Hemingway and his elephant gun. And do you recall when we employed a score of Little People as elves, to caper and do festive things around the tree? That worked well until someone left a case of malt whisky handy and unopened and the elves consumed the lot and the capering took on a dangerous tone. Only the coincidental high positioning of door handles throughout the mansion

prevented untold mayhem. Of course, Young Albert gets a little territorial over the tree, and tends to lurk in the branches and lunge at unsuspecting guests who stray too close: more than a few fingers have ended up as decorations amid the tinsel and candy canes. And more than a few Cape May worthies have drunkenly consumed them by accident (we have never told the poor souls, for fear of trauma). This year though, we have topped the lot: you have all seen the 70-foot Norwegian Spruce, marveled at the live songbirds tethered by tiny silver chains to the branches, coveted the 34,000 little diamonds glued over the needles and stood openmouthed at the real white flakes falling gently from the hidden snow machine on the roof. But wait, my friends, until the final day of the Holidays, we will draw a secret lottery and one of you fine citizens will be shot with a tranquilizer dart, dressed in white and affixed to the top of the tree. It is our city’s sacrifice to the old gods of winter, and vital to ensure the start of 2014.

The book everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed. These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. And at selected local stores.

The Answer Lady

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I have had — well, let’s call it less than a banner year. My long-term boyfriend and I split up, I moved out of our apartment, my cat passed away, I changed jobs, and I’m just kind of… down. I know I should be psyching myself up for the upcoming year, but I just feel like I’m too busy trying to recover from this year to even think about that stuff. How do I snap out of it? — Is it 2014 yet? Dear Yet The Answer Lady feels your pain, as 2013 has been an exceptionally challenging year for her as well. 48th Annual West Cape May Community Christmas Parade

THANK YOU to all who volunteered their time and services and made donations. The 48th Annual West Cape May Community Christmas Parade was, once again, a huge success. It wouldn’t have been possible if not for the many volunteers who continue to give their time and donations to make it so. We’d like to send out a BIG THANK YOU to those who helped from fundraising, to advertising, to donating candy and funds, to organizing the entrants on parade night. The entire parade is made possible through these generous donations of time and money. To anyone we may have overlooked in error, the biggest Thank you to you! We Invite You to Become a Member.

Center for Community Arts members and volunteers have been making a difference in the community since 1995. Come help us. Learn something new. Join the fun.

Community Art Programs

CCA holds year-round classes and art camps for all ages - 3 to 14 and adults. We welcome new students, and we are recruiting new teachers, teaching assistants, and curriculum writers.

Community Radio – WCFA-LP 101.5 FM Cape May County’s hometown radio station is on the air 24x7 with quality commercial-free “Jazz and More” programming. We are all volunteers, providing the community with a hometown voice, and live coverage of the County’s key events.

Shore Slams

Join the fun, or come help us plan and produce this growing storytelling event. Weekly at Lucky Bones Restaurant through the fall, winter and spring, and a heck of a time.

African American History Tour & Exhibits

Hidden in plain sight among Cape May’s Victorian beauty is the city’s African-American history and heritage. CCA presents an entertaining and informative walking tour, and an annual history exhibit. We are looking for tour docents, historians and curators.

Franklin Street School

CCA saved and preserved this 1927 historic landmark with the vision of opening a Community Arts Center. That’s how we got our name. The dream is still alive. We welcome your help in getting this center up and going.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

BRANDY likes to play and will fetch a ball, but he would much rather snuggle by your side. He would be best in a home without children or other animals. At first glance you would think the fact that Brandy has only three legs would make for a highmaintenance dog. In fact, he is a very cool guy who just wants to hang out with you. He is quite healthy but long walks are difficult. He needs a home where he will be accepted.

«

OLIVER is an extremely anxious boy who is going to need some time to adjust to new people. He can get along with other dogs, and cats, but is going to need to be in an adult-only home. If you think you could spare the time and love for a guy down on his luck, stop on in the shelter and give Oliver a second chance. He is up to date on all vaccines, neutered, and the adoption fee is $95.

«

SUMMER is a very playful girl who needs a home with older kids. She will also like to be the only pet in your house. She was adopted but then was brought back. She would love for someone to give her a second chance. If you are interested in a girl like Summer, please come down to shelter to meet her. She is up to date on all vaccines, spayed and house trained.

«

SHELBY is a very sweet girl who is looking for a low-key home to relax in. She does like to be pet, but is more in her element when she is sleeping in a dark corner. She would be a good candidate for a lap cat, though. If you are looking for a more quiet and calm girl to brighten up your day, stop on in the shelter and give Shelby a second chance. She is up to date on all vaccines, spayed, and the adoption fee is $35.

«

GLADYS is a very sweet girl that just can’t get enough attention. She loves to be pet, and could purr all day long for you. All she wants is to spend time with you. If you’re looking for a super sweet little girl to brighten up your day, stop on in the shelter and give Gladys a second chance. She is up to date on all vaccines is spayed and house trained.

Happy New Year!

KITTENS What’s your favorite color? Orange, black, grey, white, buff, tabby? Male or female? We’ve got ’em. Activity Of The Week

W

This week: Ring in the New Year. By Catherine Dugan.

HEN you ring in the New Year this week, consider that the term is literal. Bells — and bell ringers — have been marking time for centuries. Early bells — probably developed in Asia — were viewed as the instruments of the gods. They began as clay creations, and later were made from glass, ceramic or metal. They were large and expensive — the largest is said to have been the Great Bell of Dhammazedi, which reportedly weighed 330 tons. Bells were restricted to royalty, who used them for religious services. In Japan, revelers recall this time by lining up to ring huge temple bells at New Year’s. The bells are rung 108 times to ward off the 108 earthly desires said to torment the human mind. As bells became smaller, cheaper and more portable, their use spread, and they were hung on animals to ward off evil spirits. Bells can make witches fall right off their broomsticks, drive away mice and snakes, or ensure a good harvest, depending on your source. Bells bring luck to a marriage

— unless the bell rings right before the ceremony, which means that one spouse will die young. Bells can cut the pain of childbirth, and a child born in the third, sixth, ninth or twelfth hour of ringing will be gifted with a sixth sense. In 17th-century England, bell ringing became a sport, with elaborate rules and patterns, and the winning gentleman was presented with a pair of gloves or a hat. Not a bell. Bells wake us, and signal the start of school or work. Aboard ship, time is mea-

sured in bells, and at New Year’s Eve, 16 bells are sounded, eight for the old year and eight for the new. But bells can also portend a shipwreck, so sailors are said to fear a tolling bell. Alarm bells warn us of danger, and bells proclaim good news as well, ringing out to celebrate the end of war or the start of a new year. Cape May offers a variety of places start your new year. Restaurants like the Merion Inn and the Washington Inn offer early and late seatings on New Year’s Eve. You can also celebrate at Elaine’s, Cabanas, the Boiler Room or the Ugly Mug. Looking for a more formal party? Consider the Glitter Ball at Congress Hall, featuring dancing, dinner and an open bar. Tickets are $179 for adults and $75 for those ages four to 20. The Grand Hotel offers five hours or entertainment with Groove Place, the Grand Land and Sea Buffet, and an open bar, $130 per person. As for the day after... celebrate with brunch at Peter Shields Inn on New Year’s Day. Happy New Year!

Lower Cape May Regional senior JOSH PENNINGTON is one of the school’s best athletes. He’s played baseball since he was a toddler, with the encouragement of his father, and the sport has to grown to become the key focus of his life. The encouragement has paid off as many Major League Baseball scouts are recruiting Josh, including the Boston Red Sox and the San Diego Padres. Although the teams who are looking at him are very well-known, he wants to play for a team that will develop his baseball skills. “It’s always been a dream of mine to move up in the ranks of professional baseball,” said Josh. The pitcher/utility player recently signed a baseball scholarship with Division I St. John’s University where he hopes to major in sports management.
