FOCUS ON LISBON

GOLF IN AND AROUND

LISBON M

aybe it’s the brightness of Lisbon’s light, the depth of its blues or the vibrancy of its greens that attracts so many holidaymakers and golfers to the region. One thing is for sure, for golfers it’s the ideal spot for a late summer day on one of over twenty courses dotted across the undulating landscape. That is of course, when we are allowed to travel there!

ISSUE 1 7

It’s a land where the hills join the sea and pinewoods roll into the distance – and its mild all-year-round temperatures attract so many tourists, many from the UK. Hi-tech innovations sit alongside old customs drawn from ancient history, which in turn mix with a heady cultural heritage - the ambience in Lisbon is hard to match. It is ageless, yet ancient and cultured, yet contemporary. If authenticity is what you seek then Lisbon is the place.

RESTYLING THE ‘GRAND OLD LADY’ OF NORTH BERWICK

Y

ou need a lot of skill sets to make a high end hotel re-opening work in East Lothian because you are far from short of competition, but you are on a winner when the manager reveals golf courses played a part in the re-design. The Marine North Berwick Hotel & Spa used to be known as the Grand Old Lady of the region until she got just a little too long in the tooth. She’s strutting her stuff again now with an elegant new look, having been given a carefully thought out makeover by her new owners, Marine & Lawn Hotels. Bruno De Schuyter, the manager in question, says inspiration came from the surrounding golf courses and East Lothian’s notable figures, with nods to North Berwick and the hotel and town’s seaside location. 10

E XCLUSIVEG OLFANDTR AVEL .CO.UK

He said: “She is once again the luxury landmark on Scotland’s Golf Coast. The hotel fully embraces the beauty of the wilderness at its front door and interiors are drawn from the agricultural and architectural history of the area, the barley, wheat and stone, alongside the craggy coast, with subtle hints of lobster, midnight blue oil paint and royal amaranth mixed in.” The hotel’s Lawn Restaurant and its Bass Rock Bar look straight out onto The North Berwick Golf Course’s West Links, the Firth of Forth, the Bass Rock and the beach. Many of the attractions on the menu travel little further than a well struck three-wood. From locally sourced herbs and free-range fowl to North Berwick’s legendary lobster dives, it’s farm—and sea—to table, served fresh daily. ISSUE 1 7

NORTH FORELAND UNVEILS PLANS FOR OPEN VISITORS

N

orth Foreland Golf Club is ready to play a full part in an exciting summer of sport after golf fans were given the green light to attend this summer’s Open Championship at Royal St. George’s.

Thousands of visitors from the UK, Europe and beyond are set to head to Kent in July for the 149th Open Championship after the R & A revealed it is “confident of welcoming a significant number of fans”, and to celebrate, North Foreland is offering attendees the opportunity to combine watching with a round at the highly regarded English seaside course. Situated just 13 miles along the coast from Royal St. George’s, the 36-hole venue is considered one of the best member clubs in Kent and is giving visitors early access to reserve tee times online between Monday, July 12, and Monday, July 19 – with a range of special fourball packages available. Golfers can play the dramatic downland course, which runs along the clifftops and offers sea views from each tee, from just £125 throughout the week or as a fourball package from £450 which includes breakfast or lunch, complimentary range balls and a souvenir welcome pack for each player.

“The Open Championship is a golf event like no other,” said Chris Dowrick, North Foreland’s general manager. “It’s the biggest tournament in the world and to have the opportunity to be a part of it is very exciting for everyone at the club. “The anticipation and excitement levels are really starting to build following the news that golf fans will be allowed to attend, and we can’t wait to showcase our wonderful venue to a new audience of golfers, many of whom will never have played golf by the seaside before. “People haven’t had much to celebrate over the last 12 months, and we believe the chance to experience one of the best surrounding courses followed by watching the best players in the world in action will prove very appealing.” A final decision on the number of golf fans allowed on-site at The Open is still to be taken, with government decisions on social distancing, testing and Covid-19 certification needed to be confirmed before an attendance limit can be announced.

MURRAY

FORMER EUROPEAN OPEN CHAMPION WHO WILL BE COMMENTATING ON HIS 30TH OPEN FOR BBC RADIO 5 LIVE

WESTY HAS THE GAME FOR OPEN VICTORY

A

nything can happen at The Open Championship but my fancy to win at Royal St George’s this year is Lee Westwood. This is a terrific course, tricky and undulating. One of the best. I have played it more than a dozen times and the players who have overcome all on the occasions I have commentated on the tournament there are Darren Clarke (2011), Ben Curtis (2003) and Greg Norman (2003). What all three have in common is that they won because they were supremely accurate off the tee and at the time Darren triumphed he was one of the best drivers in world golf. My gut feelings come into play here because I know the course. You have to be a great driver of the ball, full stop. Ben was an unknown but there is a massive premium on finding the fairways and then staying on them at Royal St Georges and Ben was never out of play. Lee has a great shot at this one and if I was a betting man (which I am not) I would choose Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm as good eachway bets.

14

E XCLUSIVEG OLFANDTR AVEL .CO.UK

ISSUE 1 7

My favourite this time is Lee because you have to know links golf to play this course. All the holes play in different directions and the wind can come from anywhere at any time. Strategy is everything here, playing for position as against length. The winner will be the player with the most skill in terms in controlling his ball flight from a variety of uphill, downhill and sidehill lies. The really top players are good at coping with stuff like that. It’s natural instinct and just part of the deal at that level. Lee has that plus the immense patience necessary in the worst conditions. When Darren Clark won there was some dreadful weather off the coast and that shot a few people in the foot. The weather is unpredictable at Royal St George’s, it always has been and it always will be. Lee might be due his first major but this is a player who has been in fine form on the PGA Tour this year with absolutely nothing to prove to anybody. That is more of a key than anything and he has all the experience he could possibly need. Another old boy who might shock the young guns a little bit is Sergio, also coming into a bit of form again. Jon also has a great chance, again because he drives the ball fantastically well.

ISSUE 1 7

THE WINNER WILL BE THE PLAYER WITH THE MOST SKILL IN TERMS IN CONTROLLING HIS BALL FLIGHT FROM A VARIETY OF UPHILL, DOWNHILL AND SIDEHILL LIES

It’s a joy to have this wonderful championship back after losing it last year to Covid. The 2019 champion Shane Lowry has had a long wait to defend his title and the atmosphere in Ireland when he won at Royal Portrush was the best I can remember as a Radio 5 Live commentator at the event. My time with the BBC goes back to 1991 at Royal Birkdale where Ian Baker-Finch was the champion. My favourite memory to date? In 2005 when Jack Nicklaus bid farewell to the Open at St Andrews. Andrew Murray was talking to Tim Taylor.

INTERVIEW

We caught up with European Tour player Toby Tree to talk about the season so far, golf during lockdown, and as he is a J.Lindberg Player, all things golf fashion . . . How did you get through the recent lockdown with practice and keeping your game in order?

Favourite destination you have visited through playing golf and why?

Luckily my trainer uses a private gym so we managed to get a good period of training done. Something which is normally tough as you don’t get longer than a couple of weeks off between events so I enjoyed that. We always used an indoor net to hit shots and work on technique. Not the same as outdoors but better than nothing.

South Africa, hands down. I've been fortunate enough to spend a couple of months there each year for the last 10 years. It’s a beautiful place, the courses are unreal and the people are so accommodating. If you ever get the chance to play some golf down there you won’t regret it.

Golf runs in your family, at what age did you start to get the 'golf bug'? Both my grandad's played golf, my dad followed suit when I was about 10. Michael, my old man, is a plasterer so when he finished work he used to take me after school and play nine holes in the evening. It would normally follow with a bowl of cheesy chips. Who doesn’t like 9 holes and cheesy chips? Are you attached to a golf club? Yes, I’m attached to Golf@Goodwood Where do you live? I live in Southwater, West Sussex. I normally describe this to people overseas as nearish Gatwick. What’s your first memory of JL in golf? I remember the cool colours and belts growing up. Also, lots of juniors wearing JL jackets. I used to rock some bright red trousers back in the day. My lucky pair.

Is qualifying for and playing all four rounds in The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in 2017 your career highlight? To be fair, so far in my pro career, I don’t have too many real stand out highlights. It was pretty cool to play all 4 rounds in my first major and experience the buzz and atmosphere of the event. I had a lot of my friends and family there, so I would say it’s a career highlight. Hopefully, I can change that answer soon. Which football team do you support? Were you any good as a footballer? I’m a Spurs Fan, same as my old man. Football used to be my main sport then switched to golf when I was about 15. I was pretty decent yeah, like a modern-day Frank Lampard ha ha. What’s your favourite JL combination from JL’s SS21 collection and why? I’m loving this top at the moment (below), it goes well with a couple of colour trousers or shorts. It fits so well, love the collar and the colour stands out. It’s a really cool piece.

The funniest thing ever happened to you on a golf course? Seen a fair few good head offs and club throws over the years. Won’t name any names. The golf course isn’t the funniest place, however, I’ve got some good stories from the 19th, probably best left for another time. Favourite golf course and why? I love Sunningdale Old course. It’s beautiful. I can see myself when I’m older sipping a morning coffee and bumping my driver 170 down the middle having a stroll with my dog and being a happy old man.

INTERVIEW

Why overall does the JL style appeal to you? I just love the vibe. It’s smart but with a quirky twist. It’s a similar style to what I wear off the course. The fit of the clothing is a big appeal. What made you start wearing JL clothing? I’ve always said if I had to pick any clothing to wear on tour it would be JL. So when I had the opportunity to wear it, it was a no brainer. Feel good, play good. Away from the course which brands do you wear? Away from the track, normally treat myself to a bit of clobber if I play well. I wear Patta, Stone Island and A.P.C. How do you feel your season gone so far? It's been a slow start really. I've made 4/6 cuts so far. But nothing to really speak off. My games in good shape, I’m working a lot on the mental side of things at the moment. Re this summary of your amateur record below . . . your proudest moment? On the international front, Toby was a member of the successful Great Britain and Northern Ireland team that won the Jaques Leglise Trophy against Europe in Spain and he also represented England in the prestigious European Team Championships. Another notable victory followed in 2010 when he trounced an international field of 118 with a four-round total of 10 under part to secure the coveted Sir Henry Cooper Masters. His rapid rise up the amateur rankings accelerated in 2014 when he won the Welsh Amateur Championship and broke into the world’s top 15 amateurs. Almost inevitably at the end of the year, Toby turned professional. Any significant other . . . or playing the field . . . or live like a monk? Ha, what a question! I'm 26 now and got myself a Mrs I think it’s much better for my golf to be settled down. In 2008, you won the English Boys U14 Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship. Where? Beat anybody we have heard of? Rolling back the years here, when I used to pick up a lot of silverware. It was at Coxmoor, a lovely track. Some good names yeah, however not sure they’re too bothered about the Reid trophy whilst they fly NetJets and I’m EasyJet.

#JLPLAYER ISSUE 1 7

I also played the Junior a Ryder cup. Probably a highlight of my amateur junior career. Who do you turn to most for advice on your career? I’ve got a great team around me now. I used to do a lot of things by myself which probably wasn’t the best idea. So depending on what advice I need depends who I turn to. A good team around you is key I think. Every time you hit a tree, what are the comments made? Ha ha. It’s more so the starters when they announce me. For some reason, I get a lot of 'on the tee Toby Tee'.

ROLL IT THE BRYSON WAY

As golfers we know there are a million ways to get the ball in the hole. Putting may be considered an art form, but science can now help players improve no matter how good your game on the greens already is.

G

et out here and see how we roll? That was the tag line for a TV ad flagging up the attractions of the Californian tourist industry so successful it ran for years.

Descending Loft Technology involves milling four flat surfaces into the putter face. Each plane descends in loft by 1° from the top of the face to the bottom of the face.

Change the way you roll? This is the essence of a putter from Florida launched into the UK market which does exactly what it says on the tin.

This guarantees a consistent launch angle, a truer roll and improved distance control.

Even the most scientific mind in golf, Bryson DeChambeau, has soared in the PGA Tour putting stats since he started using SIK (Study In Kinematics) putters . . . and landed eight wins including a US Open victory. All models of the putters are custom fit, both in terms of your physical size and your individual putting method. The principle is what SIK call Descending Loft Technology, and it’s so good they have patented it. Golfers commonly lean the putter shaft forward or backward during a stroke, which aims the putter face down or up as it makes impact. Yet however much you personally deloft or add loft, this putter will produce the most optimal launch in the sport.

The putter feels solid, both in your hands and at impact. You hear a satisfying click as the putter collides with the ball. The grip also feels tacky and substantial and the putter weight seems perfect for the head. DeChambeau has used the putters since 2017. Straight after missing his fifth straight cut, at PGA National, he made a three-hour drive across Florida from Palm Beach Gardens to meet with Stephen Harrison, president of SIK Golf. Harrison’s company is a putting manufacturer based at Orange County National where they also teach putting philosophy and methodology. As Harrison puts it: “We do the same thing that you would do on a launch monitor, it’s just that we do it microscopically.

“Even Tour pros rarely return the putter to the identical position at impact as it was at address.

THE HOTTEST NEW PUTTER TECHNOLOGY IN GOLF

“So this face automatically corrects the face loft at impact. If you make contact with the ball higher on the face, you’ve delofted your putter. “So Descending Loft Technology adds the loft back higher on the face to get the ball rolling quickly. “If you hit it lower on the face, you naturally loft the putter, so these putters correct the launch. “No matter where you make contact with it, you’ll always end up with an ideal launch angle of 1.5 to 2 degrees.” DeChambeau says: “The net result is better distance control and accuracy. “On short putts, the ball seems to go on a straighter path. Longer putts seem to stay on track toward the target line. I’m putting the best I have in my life.” DeChambeau finished six shots clear of the field in the 2020 US Open and pipped Lee Westwood by one shot to finish first in the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational. Ranked 194th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained for putting before meeting with SIK Golf, DeChambeau is now in the top 50 in the world. He added: “I can be comfortable with how it feels off the face knowing that it’s going to roll the same every single time.” For club golfers, it is worth bearing in mind putting stats are measured in the finest margins imaginable on the PGA Tour.

The problem:

Nobody, even the best golfers in the world can match the shaft angle from address to impact at any consistent rate. This leads to inconsistent launch angles, which result in poor distance control.

The Solution:

Descending Loft Technology™. DLT delivers consistent launch angles regardless of shaft lean at impact which leads to more consistent and predictable rolls.

TRADITIONAL PUTTER – 1 LOFT Flat faced putters launch the ball eratically depending on shaft angle at impact.

SIK PUTTER WITH DLT – 4 LOFTS SIK putters launch the ball consistently regardless of shaft angle at impact.

A SIK putter is highly likely to make a significant difference to the scorecard of a club player of any handicap in an amateur competition or tournament. 22

FEATURE

“I can be comfortable with how it feels off the face knowing that it’s going to roll the same every single time.”

HOW DLT WORKS Descending Loft Technology™ is SIK’s patented putter face technology. With four flat surfaces that are milled into our putter face. Each plane descends in loft by 1° from the top of the face to the bottom of the face. When your shaft is pressed at impact the ball contact will be higher on the face, same is true in reverse. DLT delivers consistent launch angles from putt to putt which lead to more consistent and predictable rolls.

DLT TECHNOLOGY SINKS MORE PUTTS Every breaking putt starts off straight before slope of the green influences its path. How long the ball actually rolls straight before slope causes it to deviate depends on speed. Eight putts of the same speed but different launch angles will result in eight different paths.

inksnet, the leading online golf network, has gone from strength to strength since the easing of lockdown measures in the UK.

Activity on the platform is growing day by day with fantastic prizes to be won from the likes of Stewart Golf, Skechers, Bushnell and Titleist. The Linksnet series of Network Days is also in full swing, giving members the opportunity to meet like-minded golfers and play at prestigious venues such as The Belfry, Woburn, Royal Ashdown Forest and Fairmont St Andrews to name a few. Did the Linksnet directors create an “If Carlsberg did a virtual golf club” scenario all on their own? Step forward Nicola Ball, Project Manager of their web development company, Applecado, who said: “Paul Rockett and Luke Parry came to us with an exciting idea of a new social network 26

for golfers to connect and compete with each other virtually.

“We jumped at the chance and we’re so proud of what our team have produced in having the expertise to build a bespoke social network and sports league in-house. “Paul and Luke are keen golfers who saw a gap for a competitive online golf league and social network and we were delighted to be asked to build such a one of a kind platform. “The brief was to build a site that allows golfers to sign up and build their profile, add friends, find new opponents, and add scores that go towards a season’s leaderboard. “Players can find friends or connect with new members in a variety of ways and are given full control over their profile, which they can choose to keep private or public. “They can post their availability so that another member can find them and organise a match together. TRY THE CLAW GRIP TO IMPROVE YOUR PUTTING STATS 28

E XCLUSIVEG OLFANDTR AVEL .CO.UK

ISSUE 1 7

T

here are many types of putting grips on display around the Worlds various Golf Tours, one of the more popular is “The Claw” grip.

Initially seen as a last resort for players struggling with the flat stick, it is now used by many household names such as Justin Rose who has accredited this style of grip to their improved putting stats. So, how does The Claw Grip work? Should you think of considering switching to it? Two main advantages of using The Claw Grip: 1. Your power hand plays a more passive role within the stroke. 2. The stroke becomes less hands-orientated, more arms and shoulders down-the-line-stroke.

THE SETUP: Adopt your normal setup, remove your right hand, open your right palm (for right-handed golfers). Rotate your hand so that your fingers are on top of the handle, then wedge the grip into the crevice created by your thumb and fore finger – see above.

I FEEL LIKE MY SETUP NOW AND THE WAY I GRIP THE CLUB BY USING THE CLAW, MY STROKE MECHANICS ARE SO MUCH MORE SIMPLE JUSTIN ROSE

This neutralises the right hand as it is almost completely off the club effectively leaving you putting one handed.

THE STROKE: You can then focus on using your arms and shoulders to drive the stroke, using the bigger muscles rather than your hands. It will feel uncomfortable at first but with some practice it will feel more natural and more stable through the strike as you can see in the picture below. You can see how stable the clubface is and how there is no breakdown in the stroke. If you are suffering from a flippy putting stroke, give The Claw Grip a go.

TRAVEL FIRST LOOK AT VERDURA RESORT’S SPECTACULAR NEW COURSE

A

head of the opening in October of this year, golfers can now enjoy a tantalising glimpse of the new golf course at Sicily’s Verdura Resort, part of Rocco Forte Hotels. Viewers can plot their way along the spectacular new par-four hole – and you can almost smell the ocean breeze along the coastline. The new signature ninth hole on the East Course is part of the major renovation project – scheduled for completion in October with nine of the holes ready for play in August – as world-renowned golf architect Kyle Phillips returned to the site of his original design in Sicily to work his magic again. The result is a remarkable success with the new hole offering those trademark, incredible views across the Mediterranean, while asking some serious questions of accuracy, strategy and distance control with a slight dogleg design. Phillips said: “The drama of the coastline has been improved, so we have made the most of it. “That ninth hole is an example of what happened and how we have managed to make a fantastic new hole out of it. We have made the most out of what was available to us and we’re proud of what has been achieved.”

The extensive renovation will see a number of new features and modification of the course route, so some of the hole numbers have been adjusted. But this has allowed for the restoration of previous favourites and also some exciting new additions. The resort – home of the European Tour’s Rocco Forte Sicilian Open – boasts a wealth of exclusive luxury facilities that have helped establish the venue as one of the world’s elite golf and lifestyle destinations and is nestled in 230 hectares of stunning Mediterranean landscape on Sicily’s southern coast. Verdura Resort features 203 rooms and suites, all with a sea view, which offer a perfect solution for family holiday. In addition, the venue is set to add to its luxury accommodation portfolio with 20 new modern and spacious private Rocco Forte Private Villas open on May 13, each with its own private swimming pool and affording unparalled panoramic views of the Sicilian coast and Mediterranean. Guests can also take advantage of the Unlimited Golf package until November 21, 2021, which includes an unlimited number of rounds, daily full breakfast, and €100 F&B credit per stay. Complimentary additions also include shared buggies, use of the driving range and spa facilities.

EXPERIENCE THE PERFECT GOLF BREAK ON SPAIN’S ‘WILD COAST’

F

ew golf destinations present the chance to Live Twice in quite the same way as the Costa Brava.

One of the most scenic and unspoilt natural environments in Spain and Southern Europe (Costa Brava which translates as “wild coast”), is located 100km north of Barcelona in a region nestling between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the warm waters of the Mediterranean. The historic city of Girona is the beating heart of the region with colourful buildings dotted alongside the Onyar River and the incredible cathedral – one of the filming locations for the epic TV series Game of Thrones – all adding to its aura. In the search for the perfect golf break, the challenge is always to meet as many requirements as possible which can turn a memorable experience into an unforgettable one. The quality and diversity of the courses are obviously somewhere near the top of the priorities – and Costa Brava has that in abundance – but there is far more to the region than that. Accommodation, nightlife, gastronomy, culture, beaches, attractions, activities, easy travel links, availability, weather, value for money . . . the list goes on.

Those factors will carry varying levels of importance, depending on the make-up of the group.

With nine courses at seven clubs in the region, there is a rich offering for those whose only concern is golf. The unmistakable jewel in the crown is the outstanding PGA Catalunya, which is a regular haunt for European Tour professionals and has previously hosted the annual battle for European Tour cards at the final stage of Qualifying School. The famous Stadium course is consistently ranked in the top-10 of Europe and seen by many as the number one course in Spain, while the Tour course is only marginally less challenging, but no less enjoyable with a similar standard of maintenance and quality. But there is a fabulous selection of courses which includes Club Golf d’Aro Mas Nou, Club de Golf Costa Brava, Empordà Golf (Forest and Links courses), Club de Golf Peralada, Golf de Pals, Torremirona Golf Club and an excellent par-three course, Gualta.

ISSUE 1 7

But the essence of Live Twice is about understanding what else makes the region special and this guide may offer a few useful pointers. From the outstanding nature of beaches to enjoy and forests to explore, to the unforgettable culture, history, gastronomy and art, many of which enjoy international recognition. In a region that was home to Catalan artist Salvador Dalí, the spectacular museum has many of his works on display, which will ask some searching questions of even the most astute observers on understanding artistic concepts. But the beauty of this region is its capacity to meet more simple pleasures too. Fabulous golf, inviting sandy beaches, great dining experiences and a superb local wine or your favourite tipple in the warm sunshine on a terrace.

DESTINATION: COSTA BRAVA

But the Costa Brava offers so much more to visitors and this is why the Live Twice philosophy works so well to underline the diversity of a golf destination that offers so much more for visitors.

Average annual temperatures of 16.5Cᵒ make it a year-round destination, even with mild winter temperatures when UK golfers may well be piling on the layers to battle the elements.

TORREMIRONA

GOLF CLUB

J WWW.GOLFTORREMIRONA.COM

ust seven kilometres west of the city of Figueres – birthplace of Salvador Dalí and now home to the remarkable museum he designed himself – Torremirona Golf Club is just a short drive to the French border and less than half an hour from the neighbouring Golf Club Peralada. The nearby high-speed train station also means Barcelona is less than an hour away. Sitting alongside Torremirona Relais Hotel Golf & Spa – a 49-room hotel, which was renovated in January 2018 – is the par-72 course, full of lakes, tricky bunkers and undulating greens to test all aspects of your game. The hotel facilities are extensive and the Spa Dubhé is the ideal place to reinvigorate and relax after the round with jacuzzi, sauna, Hamman massage and bi-thermal showers. A traditional Mediterranean restaurant, a lobby bar and spectacular terrace to enjoy the mild evenings also add to the experience. Torremirona offers a relaxing and enjoyable round, perhaps without some of the daunting challenges presented at some of the other courses in the region. Although there is a genuine opportunity to score well if your game is in full working order, do not be fooled into thinking it is easy. Co-designed in the early 1990s by Eugenio Aguado and Jordi Soler, generous fairways are routed through a tranquil landscape and there is plenty of water to keep you sharp, demanding accuracy and distance control at regular intervals.

It’s an easy course to walk, relatively flat but there are some outstanding holes to enjoy. The outward half loops around a small residential complex and water comes into play at two of these holes, the par-three fifth (with its island green) and the par-five sixth, where a small pond at the front left of the green adds greater emphasis on the approach shot. The back nine is more compact and water hazards feature again at both the par-three 10th and the double doglegged par five 18th, which is a fabulous finishing hole with another pond just waiting to swallow hopes of a successful final iron shot.

CLUB DE GOLF

PERALADA Castell de Peralada.

The Spa at Peralada.

L

There are some clever par-threes, several played over lakes, interesting tree-lined par fours with sharp dog-legs and long, sweeping par fives, while the greens are firm and fast.

Situated in the north of the Costa Brava region, the host venue of the 1995 Catalonia Open produced a winner who went to play a crucial role in Europe’s success at Oak Hill later that same year.

Peralada has sustainability high on the agenda and was the first European golf course to obtain Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) Certification from the European Union, which is granted to companies that have implemented a system for the eco-friendly management, operation and maintenance of the golf course.

An unassuming Irishman by the name of Philip Walton took the title at Peralada with a threestroke victory but that victory for Walton was enough to earn his place on the team alongside the stalwarts of Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros and Colin Montgomerie, which paved the way for his emotional, nail-biting singles success over Jay Haas on the final green. No doubt the wine flowed in those celebrations – just as it does on a daily basis at Peralada, which has its own unique connection with wine. Hotel Peralada Wine Spa & Golf – yes, a spa which uses the antioxidant, moisturising and regenerating power of wine – is a 64-room fivestar resort with luxury at the forefront while there is also the opportunity to enjoy a self-contained stay in the on-site three-bedroom house. Featuring an idyllic location, the golf course offers sweeping views of the picturesque countryside and the Albera mountain range.

This is also the case for the winery, opening in spring 2022. The €40m facility will produce a staggering 3m bottles per year when it is fully operational and will be yet another reason to attract visitors. Celebrated chef, Paco Pérez – who has five Michelin stars and numerous awards to his name – oversees the entire Peralada Resort gastronomy at the fabulous L'Olivera restaurant, while Xavier Sagristà, who also gained a Michelin star in recent years, leads the team at the nearby Castell de Peralada Restaurant in the Castle. Aside from the fantastic dining experience inside the castle, there is an element of extra excitement on offer with the unusual addition of a casino, which all adds to the memorable experience of this pretty town.

EMPORDÀ GOLF

Emporda Forest Course.

I

t’s rare to find two courses with such quality and variety at the same venue.

The Links nine, by stark contrast, is virtually treeless, with vast expanses of sandy desert, thick rough and water hazards.

But Empordà Golf – near Torroella de Montgrí in the east of the region – proves it can be done with the Links Course and the Forest Course to suit all preferences at a resort which has also completed a superb transformation just last year. Reminiscent of many seaside courses in the UK and Ireland, Empordà Links sways between dunes, lakes and strategically-placed bunkers throughout its 18 holes. In contrast, Empordà Forest winds through a traditional Mediterranean pine forest where players must navigate their way through a series of rolling fairways that have been carved through the trees. The former weaves through dense woodland, with each beautifully pineframed hole offering great variety. It is more forgiving, with sweeping undulating fairways sheltered by mature pines. Three holes are dominated by a sizable manmade lake, with the approach over the drink on the sixth hole particularly satisfying for risk-takers.

Although the Links is not next to the sea, it does have that similar, exposed feel – and when the wind blows, it is a serious test. The treeless and barren terrain offers very little defence from the gusts, which can wreak havoc when trying to avoid the many water hazards and mounds acting as pin protectors. Fortunately, some holes are short enough and fairways wide enough to open your shoulders and leave a flick with a wedge.

Emporda’s new restaurant.

With both layouts designed by worldacclaimed architect Robert von Hagge, it is his first design project in Spain and requires golfers to employ a variety of skills and techniques to overcome the challenge posed. The 86-room Hotel Empordà Golf has been transformed with a modern and contemporary new look.

Emporda Links Course.

A new restaurant concept has been created throughout Empordà’s dining areas while an outdoor swimming pool has also been installed.

Enjoy special tastes from historic vineyards

I

n Costa Brava, wine is not just something to drink on a special occasion: it’s a way of life.

With the traditions dating back to Roman times, centuries of knowledge have been blended into the craft with generations of expertise producing a series of tastes unique to the region. And what better way to spend an afternoon (after a morning round of course) than sampling what there is on offer at one of the many nearby vineyards. The secrets of red, white and rosé Empordà wines are waiting to be discovered where you can trace the history of winegrowing in the area, discover the methods of winemaking, taste some very special Empordà wines and enjoy many other activities in a magical setting. For real enthusiasts, there are tasting sessions with an expert on hand to talk you through the experience, while comparing notes with other guests.

ISSUE 1 7

A selection of museums are also dotted around the region which explain the cultural, historical and economic aspects of the industry. With various fairs, festivals, presentations and seminars also available, the wine experience is not to be missed when planning a visit to the Costa Brava. Of course, you can also take some souvenirs home with an extensive network of bars and shops specialising in local wines with experts are on hand to broaden your understanding and help you make the perfect choice. And in keeping with Costa Brava’s philosophy to ‘Live Twice’, there is always an opportunity to combine wine with any other activity you may be keen to try: cycling, kayaking or simply taking up a seat in the clubhouse after a round to watch the sunset. Experience the charm and character of historic Girona

B DESTINATION: COSTA BRAVA

rimming with character, history, memorable locations and unique experiences, Girona’s charm is an enduring quality for visitors to the region. In some ways, it is a living and breathing time capsule as more than 2000 years of civilisation are documented and preserved in the architecture and monuments. But while it has adjusted to the demands of the 21st century, those roots are never ignored or forgotten. With well-preserved medieval and Jewish quarters, dating back to between the 11th and 15th centuries, the city straddles the banks of the Onyar River and is one of the city’s most famous images, with its tightlypacked, colourful buildings that come right down to the water’s edge. The city itself has seen significant changes through the years from the first Iberian occupation, through the Romans, the Holy Roman Empire and in 1809 Napoleon took occupation of the city after a long siege.

Museu Jueu – The Museum of Jewish History details the story of the Jewish medieval communities in Catalonia and the old Kingdom of Aragon from the ninth to 15th centuries, while the Museu d’història chronicles Girona’s long and varied history in extensive detail. Although the city is a fantastic place to visit at any time of the year, May presents a colourful addition as the Temps de Flors exhibition (the flower season) fills the city with plants and spectacular floral displays for a few magical days. The history and culture of Girona go hand-in-hand with internationally renowned first-rate cuisine. One of the best known restaurants in the city is El Celler de Can Roca, a serial collector of Michelin stars. But there are fabulous local restaurants and eateries throughout the city, with many offering the opportunity to dine outside in those ancient streets to soak up the full experience.

Arabic baths and the 14th century city walls still remain while the Romanesque and Baroque cathedral is hard to miss and acts as the centrepiece of the city. It is imposing and impressive in equal measure, which is why it has been used frequently for filming locations of big-budget historical films and TV. Among the many cultural attractions to visit, Casa Masó – family home of architect Rafael Masó (18801935) – is one of his most important architectural works and the only one of the famous houses over the River Onyar open to the public.

EQUIPMENT REVIEW

SRIXON ZX IRONS GIVE YOUR GAME THE ZX FACTOR As a golfer who has never, if I’m honest, even considered Srixon clubs, I wasn’t sure what to expect when these clubs arrived. I had seen many images online of the ZX range and visually they looked stunning. Blending a smooth, sharp look of a player’s iron, with the forgiveness of a cavity back, makes the ZX5 one of the top mid-handicap irons on the current market. Srixon has made some of the best looking clubs in the game and, with the latest ZX range, this trend continues. At address, the top line looks pretty thin which, if you are changing from a typical game improvement iron, may make you think you won’t get much forgiveness. But this definitely isn’t the case. The amount of feedback and feel you get through your strikes is huge. Even with poorly hit shots, you are left in no doubt as to whereabouts on the clubface you have made contact. With those non-pure shots, don’t go expecting huge losses in distance because it just doesn’t happen. However, strike these irons out of the middle and be prepared for the ultimate buzz, the most ‘buttery feel’ and in my case huge gains in distance and consistency.

EQUIPMENT

The ZX5 has a slight offset and also features a shiny chrome finish with a tungsten weight in the toe and sharp edges in the cavity design. For a cavity back iron the ZX5’s just feel solid and dependable which of course gives you huge amounts of confidence. The new Tour V.T. Sole, designed to improve turf interaction sees these clubs slide right through the turf cleanly and produces shallow divots. This helps to create solid contact, even if you hit a little behind the ball. What Srixon call ‘MainFrame’ is a milled pattern on the backside of each ZX5 Iron face. This optimizes COR for more ball speed and more distance on every shot. Personally, I’ve gained distances on every iron in the bag which is very pleasing of course. But the biggest plus point for me is the consistency these irons have brought to my game. With a mid-high ball flight, shots into greens especially with shorter irons again have given me more consistency. The inclusion of progressive grooves in the shorter irons feature sharp and narrow grooves to promote spin where you need it most. Srixon designed the ZX5 irons to be long, forgiving irons, in a compact shape aimed at a mid-lower handicap golfer. The ZX5 forgiveness and distance are superb, but the playability and consistency are what set them apart and is going to keep these clubs firmly in my bag. If you’re a mid-low handicap player looking to upgrade your irons this year, make sure you give these ZX5 irons plenty of attention. REVIEW: MIKE STAFFORD

A COMPACT BLADE SHAPE WITH BAGS OF WORKABILITY The workable and aesthetically pleasing ZX7 showcases a compact blade shape and narrow sole, putting you in total control across each and every hole on the course. Their fully forged athletic design not only looks great, but these clubs are built for distance, providing players with exceptional feel and some serious power at impact. This is partly down to the varied textures and features, plus the unique tour cavity design – shifting mass to the perimeter and the sweet spot. The resulting performance contains slight assistance on off-centre strikes, keeping you on your game. The narrow, tour VT sole improves turf interaction which adds to the workability of the club, with the V-shaped sole and heel and toe notches respected by world-class tour players.
