Another instalment in our series of interviews dedicated to Italian excellence. Anita Lo Mastro had the pleasure of interviewing Anton Giulio Grande, a stylist who interprets femininity with his creations and, today, also an institutional figure as the President of the Calabria Film Commission.

Welcome Anton Giulio. I’m sure you will be able to make the most of your appointment as President of the Calabria Film Commission, a highly prestigious role that will surely play an important role in revitalizing this territory.

“Thanks Anita, and thanks to Excellence Magazine, it’s an honor to give you this interview. Indeed, being President is an important commitment: we are attracting many productions – hopefully some international ones, too – to a very difficult territory, such as Calabria, and we hope they will be able to contribute to the celebration of the beauty of its landscapes and the prestige of its archaeological sites, which have thousands of years of history.”

Proseguono le interviste dedicate alle eccellenze italiane. Anita Lo Mastro ha il piacere di intervistare Anton Giulio Grande, stilista interprete della femminilità con le sue creazioni, oggi anche nel ruolo istituzionale di Presidente di Calabria Film Commission.

Benvenuto Anton Giulio, sono sicura che saprai valorizzare al meglio la nomina in qualità di Presidente di Calabria Film Commission, un ruolo di grande prestigio che potrà dar vita a scenari di rivitalizzazione del territorio.

“Grazie Anita, e grazie ad Excellence Magazine, sono onorato di questa intervista. In effetti, quello di Presidente è un importante impegno: stiamo attirando in un territorio molto difficile, come quello della Calabria, tantissime produzioni, speriamo anche internazionali, che potranno contribuire alla celebrazione della bellezza dei paesaggi in armonia con il prestigio dei siti archeologici della Calabria, che vanta millenni di storia”.

Anton Giulio, how did your passion for fashion start?

“We usually say that people choose their professions, but in my case, to tell you the truth, it was the opposite – it was almost a calling. I was called to do this job after nearly 30 years of study and career, a job that makes me happy every day and that I’ve never stopped loving.”

Your dresses embody femininity in its deepest essence. Where does this inspiration come from?

“From a deep love for women, from a great respect, which led me to understand what a woman wants and what she wishes to communicate through the dress she decides to wear. This helps me create garments with spontaneity, without having to think too much about it. My style has remained faithful to this concept of absolute femininity and elegant eroticism.”

I can only confirm that your dresses are very feminine and sensual; among all the women you have had the opportunity to dress and make over, was there a muse who inspired you?

“I had the pleasure and privilege of dressing many women, both in show business and international politics, but also many ordinary women who chose to wear a dress by Anton Giulio Grande to feel like a “femme fatale” at least for a night.

Therefore, it is difficult to identify just one muse – I have to say that I am often fascinated not only by objectively beautiful women, but even more so by women with a powerful personality, who may be less perfect but who embody a kind of beauty which, combined with a pinch of glamour, makes them eternally charming!”

Anton Giulio, come è nata la tua passione per la moda?

“Solitamente diciamo che sono le persone a scegliere i mestieri, in realtà nel mio caso è stato il contrario, è stata quasi una vocazione. Sono stato chiamato a fare questo lavoro dopo quasi 30 anni tra studio e carriera, un lavoro che mi entusiasma quotidianamente e che non ho mai smesso di amare”.

I tuoi abiti incarnano la femminilità nell’essenza più profonda. Da dove deriva questa ispirazione?

“Da un profondo amore nei confronti della donna, da un grande rispetto, che mi ha portato a sentire quello che una donna desidera e vuole comunicare attraverso l’abito che decide di indossare. Questo mi porta a creare capi con spontaneità senza mai pensarci troppo. Il mio stile è rimasto fedele a questo concept di assoluta femminilità ed erotismo elegante”.

Posso solo confermare che i tuoi abiti sono molto femminili e sensuali; tra tutte le donne che hai avuto modo di vestire e di valorizzare, c’è stata una musa che ti ha ispirato?

“Ho avuto il piacere e il privilegio di vestire tantissime donne, sia del mondo dello show business sia della politica internazionale, ma anche tantissime donne comuni che hanno scelto di indossare un abito di Anton Giulio Grande per sentirsi “femme fatale” almeno per una sola notte. Quindi, è difficile identificarne soltanto una e ti confesso che spesso sono affascinato non solo dalle donne oggettivamente belle ma ancor di più da donne dotate di una potente personalità, meno perfette ed espressione di quella bellezza che, unita ad un pizzico di glamour, le rende affascinanti per tutta la vita!”

Among your institutional roles, you were conferred one by the Swiss Chamber of Fashion: how did your relationship with this country start?

“In 2014 I was appointed executive member of the Swiss Fashion Chamber by its President. Switzerland is a country that I adore, a country that Italy should take as a model: this territory is full of talents and, unlike what happens in Italy, there are many opportunities to nurture them.”

Anton Giulio, it is time for our usual question, a staple of these interviews: what does excellence mean for you?

“Excellence for me is something extraordinary and uncommon. I have tried, in my small way, to achieve excellence in the world of fashion, by not letting myself be influenced or tempted to produce my collections abroad, but always remaining in Italy.”

Condivido pienamente il tuo pensiero. Tra i tuoi incarichi istituzionali, ne hai uno conferito dalla Camera della Moda Svizzera: come è nato il tuo rapporto con questo Paese?

“Sono stato nominato nel 2014 membro esecutivo della Camera della Moda Svizzera dal Presidente. La Svizzera è un Paese che io adoro, un Paese che l’Italia dovrebbe prendere come modello: questo territorio è fertile di talenti e, a differenza dell’Italia, qui c’è possibilità di valorizzarli”.

Anton Giulio, siamo giunti alla domanda di rito dalla quale non ti puoi esimere: che cos’è l’eccellenza per te?

“L’eccellenza per me è qualcosa di straordinario e di non comune. Io ho cercato, nel mio piccolo, di raggiungere l’eccellenza nel mondo della moda, non facendomi influenzare né tentare di produrre le mie collezioni all’estero, ma rimanendo sempre in Italia”.
