CCU NURSE JANE PHILLIPS MEDICAL CENTER

Jessica Upshaw, RN at St. John's Jane Phillips. Jessica is a fantastic nurse, always available to help out whenever needed. Jessica was one of the first nurses I ever worked with when coming to JP, and she welcomes everyone with open arms. Jessica always has a smile on her face, and the unit is a happier place with her around. I have had many of Jessica’s patients describe her as the one who always has a smile and is so kind.

Melinda Kay! She's one of our CCU nurses currently working on our COVID floor. She is always super nice and always takes extra care of her patients. She handles stressful situations well and is always compassionate! She never hesitates to go out of her way to say hi even on stressful days! If my family was hospitalized, I would definitely want her as their nurse! I know they would be well taken care of.

T

to all of you for your selfless hard work.

he Salute to Nurses publication has become an annual staple for the Examiner-Enterprise, allowing us to celebrate the crucial role nurses perform in health care. But this year’s edition has taken on an additional significance due to the coronavirus pandemic. While many of us are sequestered

at home for important safety reasons, nurses remain on the front lines, putting themselves in harm’s way, their compassion and dedication to others shining as examples for others as the battle against COVID-19 continues. In addition, the governing body of the World Health Organization has designat-

ed 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, which also marks the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. So read about the 55 local nurses featured in this section and help the Examiner-Enterprise honor all of our nurses and thank them for standing in the gap, helping to protect the rest of us.

JANE PHILLIPS MEDICAL CENTER

Crystal L Tabery is a great aid at JPMC. She takes very good care of her patients and always has a smile on her face.

Tasha Williams is an amazing nurse at Grand Lake Mental Health in the Bartlesville OfďŹ ce. Very thankful for her!

I would like to nominate Suzanne Edens Kelley, my mama! She’s been at JPMC almost 30 years in the Family Services Unit ????

CASIE JO ALEXANDER

BROOKE MCSPERITT

RN ST. JOHN'S HOSPITAL

CRITICAL CARE RN JANE PHILLIPS MEDICAL CENTER

KIM BRIGHT RN JANE PHILLIPS MEDICAL CENTER

I would like to tell you about the Nurse with a capital N. Prior to my son being born, I had 3 miscarriages. The day my son came to this world, I was diagnosed with Cholestasis while being 37 weeks pregnant, so I was being induced the same day. We were shocked and scared when we arrived to the St. John's Hospital that night. Nurse Casie Jo Alexander (RN) took me to my room and helped me ďŹ ll out the paperwork. She wasn’t rushing, was very compassionate and always smiled. I never met anyone who felt like a sister or aunt from the minute you met. She calmed us down, joked around a little bit, explained everything and encouraged us to the point that I felt very comfortable in a very uncomfortable situation! She was very gentle and professional with all the procedures. While I met a lot of great nurses, Casie was something else! She is truly caring of her patients (She stopped by after her shift was over to say hello to the baby and congratulations to us. My son was born 22 minutes after her shift was over.), loves her work and spreads kindness every day!

Brooke McSperitt is a Critical Care Registered Nurse at Ascension St. John Jane Phillips. This is my wife, and she is the most deserving, seless amazing, caring nurse I know. While she hasn't been an RN but for around 4 years, she has been in the ďŹ eld of healthcare at some facet for 9 years, always striving for more and working to a higher level. She has been nominated for the Daisy award multiple times due to her amazing care of her patients, although never receiving the award, even a nomination is very meaningful and humbling. She is on the frontline of this covid-19 virus, now in the critical care unit. She has two little girls and a husband at home and takes every precaution to ensure none of us come in contact with anything. She gets up every day with a smile and goes to work to care for her patients and do everything that she can for them. Thank you for considering her for Nurse 2020, it would mean so much. Thanks again.

I would like to nominate Kim Bright for the Amazing Nurse Award. Kim is an apostle of God with a heart for Jesus. She has been instrumental in setting up our Covid-19 positive ward at Ascension St. John's Jane Phillips, where we care for our positive patients. She begins every shift with a prayer for the Nursing Staff and takes such good care of them throughout their shifts. Kim has developed a special relationship with Mr. Bill that is so very special for all of us. I know it has taken a stressful time and gave us something to smile about. Kim is very deserving of this award. She is an amazing nurse who cares for her nurses daily.

CHARGE NURSE HERITAGE VILLA NURSING CENTER

RN JANE PHILLIPS MEDICAL CENTER

RN WASHINGTON COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT

She is my charge nurse at Heritage Villa here in Bartlesville. She has been a nurse for 10 years. She has been a hospice nurse for most of her career, and a year ago, she joined us in long-term care. She is a wonderful nurse and supervisor. Not only is she compassionate and kind, her nursing skills are impeccable... and our residents love her. They love her because she treats them like they matter. She treats them like she would if it were her mother or father and she expects the same from her team. I hope Jennifer gets this award, she deserves it! Oh, might I add, she also waits tables on Friday nights at Monterey's, just to buy us all lunch! Thank you!

She is an RN that works in surgery at Jane Phillips. Over her years as a nurse, she has also worked as a home health nurse, in a clinic, and as a school nurse. She absolutely excels no matter what area she is in. She is amazing with her patients and has the biggest and most loving heart. Working in surgery means a lot of being on call, overnights, and weekends. Antonia does not live in Bartlesville, that means when she’s on call and working weekends she has to stay in Bartlesville. She has 2 sons, so she is constantly missing out on games, school activities, evenings, and weekends with them. She makes that sacriďŹ ce because she knows she’s needed as a nurse. I hope you will nominate her because she truly deserves this honor and with this scary time right now, every time she goes home, she is praying that does not get sick but that she also doesn’t give anything to her family.

She is an amazing nurse that goes above and beyond what is asked of her! She is now our COVID-19 nurse. She is the loveliest of human beings and an excellent nurse. Her kindness and compassion outpaces her exhaustion. I have had the privilege to work with her for over 10 years. She always has a kind word and will reach out to non-clients who might have medical concerns. Ellen has been a nurse since she was 21 years old and has been a nurse for over 20 years. Most people might let life harden them after 20 years in a demanding profession that is not always celebrated, but Nurse Ellen has a spirit for helping others and loves the people she helps. Ellen works to improve herself and is currently going to school to obtain her Nurse Practitioner’s license. She works hard in her private life as she is also a wife, a mom and a grandmother. She is mentally strong for others, even while her son is being deployed. It is a joy to work with Nurse Ellen! I really just have no idea how she keeps it together through everything she is facing. She’s a true HERO!

RN JANE PHILLIPS MEDICAL CENTER

RN HILLCREST

RN JANE PHILLIPS MEDICAL CENTER

RN/MANAGER OF NURSING JANE PHILLIPS MEDICAL CENTER

Krystal is working in the newly established Covid-19 unit at Jane Phillips. Krystal has been an RN for over ten years and has won awards for going above and beyond her job title. Both patients and coworkers enjoy her delightful personality. Krystal is a hard working, dedicated, compassionate nurse, wife, mother, and citizen of our community. She shares her "motto" during this pandemic so that others remember what is important during this unprecedented time. Krystal says, "We need to be physically distancing, but emotionally connecting." That statement embodies Krystal's heart for nursing, family, and community. Krystal is someone we will never be able to repay. I have never been shown the kind of compassion Krystal showed my family. A dear friend of ours was in the hospital recently fighting for his life each day. He tested positive for COVID19 and was placed on a specific floor to receive care for this virus. Our friend has been a huge part of our family for nearly 15 years and lived alone. I called daily (sometimes 2/3) to check on this friend and while I know they were swamped with duties and caring for others, Krystal ALWAYS made time to update us. Her faith with God was something you could feel by just talking to her. She was compassionate, genuine, and real but most of all she cared. In the last moments of our friend’s life, Krystal took time to call and update me. She asked if I wanted to Facetime.

I'd like to nominate Dawn Smith for the Amazing Nurse award. We previously worked together at Forrest Manor. I was an aide and she was an LPN at the time and also ADON of the facility. It wasn't until we worked together at Bartlesville Health and Rehab that I truly got to know her. I worked under her as an aide and she is amazing. Patient care has always been her number one priority, even if it meant putting her behind on her regular duties, making sure our residents were taken care of, not just on paper, but in real life. She helped us several times on the floor, whether it be picking up/delivering hall trays or helping put a resident to bed for a nap while our other co-workers were busy. She cares greatly for the people she is assigned to take care of and is always positive, uplifting, and she's not afraid to be goofy. She is now an RN working for Hospice and works as a PRN for Bartlesville Health and Rehab. We still see each other every now and then, and if I ever need "nurse help," she is always there to help answer my questions. Whenever I saw this post, she was the first person to come to mind and she truly deserves to win. She's a great mother, wife, friend, and nurse. She is dedicated and has worked hard to get where she is today and deserves to be recognized!

K Michelle Alexander works at Saint John Hospital in Bartlesville. She has been an LPN for over 13 years and will be receiving her RN in a few weeks, then BSN next year. She is a single mom and loved by everyone she meets. She is the most amazing, caring person you will ever meet. She goes above and beyond for her patients and family. I've worked with her at a couple different places. She was a charge nurse at Heritage Villa Nursing Center when we first worked together. The second place I worked with her at was the Jacquelyn House for ARC, where she was the DON. There was nothing that she wouldn't do for the residents, taking care of them was her top priority, all the while still taking a full schedule of classes and taking care of her kids. She became like a second mom to me, and although, we don't work together anymore, she still finds time out of her overly busy schedule to check on me and make sure that I am doing well. In my eyes she is the true definition of not only an amazing nurse but an amazing human being. She's loving, caring, kind, and compassionate. She's someone who I would trust with my life and the lives of my children.

He is an RN at Hillcrest and works in the NICU there. I cannot express to you how amazing he is. I know I’m partial because he is my husband, but this man does so much every single day. The concern for the babies he attends to is so amazing. And with COVID being such a threat, the precautions he takes are more than anyone I’ve seen, which in turn makes me want to do better each and every day. I just wish I could really express enough to you how dedicated this man is, how big his heart is, and how proud and honored I am to have this amazing nurse in my life! Dylan was also nominated by some of his children. He’s worked extremely hard to get where he is at. He landed his dream job in the NICU not to long ago and is working in it during this difficult time. How he manages to be a nurse and a dad is beyond me. It's amazing! And he kills it at work! He is actually the reason I am going to college to be a nurse! I get to hear all of his hospital stories and all of the lives he saves every day and It makes me want to do what he does! I love him alot and he 100 percent deserves to be not only dad of the year, but nurse of the year as well!

Jerrod is a night shift team leader in the ER at Jane Phillips Medical Center. Jerrod started out in the medical field as a paramedic in the mid-90’s. Since getting his RN in 2011, Jerrod worked in the emergency room at Mercy in Independence until they closed. Jerrod is always willing to help out his co-workers whether it’s starting their IVs, answering questions, or helping out when there is a critical patient. Jerrod has been a mentor for countless new nurses. Jerrod is always willing to go to the floors to help start IVs or help move patients when needed. Jerrod also works 4-5 twelve hour shifts a week in the ER. Jerrod is always willing to help out or trade his co-workers shifts if he can, and picks up extras when no one else can work. Jerrod always has a calm demeanor no matter what the situation is, and no matter how critical the patient is. When Jerrod worked in the ER at Mercy, he was the first EVER employee of the month for the entire hospital. He also received numerous awards when he worked Independence EMS for saving lives. There are a lot of people alive today due to his quick thinking and skill set as a medic and as a RN. Jerrod more than deserves to be recognized for his hard work and work ethic.

I would like to nominate Jen Butler for the amazing nursing award. She has been the main support Nursing Leader for the setup and care of our Covid-19 positive patient ward. This has been extremely long hours, difficult situations and critically ill patients. Jen has led our critical care nurses through this pandemic with ease, a smile on her face, bloodshot eyes and extra TLC and communication. Jen is a servant leader who knows we have to invest in the happiness of our Associates. I am extremely proud of her and all of her hard work, but especially during this time. She has stepped above and beyond and I am so blessed to have her as a Nursing Leader at Ascension St. John Jane Phillips. Jennifer is also being nominated by her family. They all have great things to say about her compassion, dedication and service. Over the past few weeks, she has averaged about 120+ hours a week while taking care of the patients who need care the most. She has sacrificed time with her children and her family. She’s at the heart of the pandemic and she’s never complained once. This is what she was called to do. Soldiers are trained to run towards the fight. She is doing the same, but she’s running toward an enemy that we can’t see. She’s a hero.

ASSISTANT DON ADAMS PARC

CATH LAB MANAGER JANE PHILLIPS MEDICAL CENTER

I have worked with her since she was an aide on the oor, then a nurse and now as an Assistant DON. She has always taken the time to teach. Since she became a nurse, she never has thought that she was better than us aides. She always found a way to make our patients smile, laugh, and feel comfortable and secure knowing she is there to take care of their wounds. The compassion that she has is not a compassion that you see every day. Adams PARC is truly lucky to have her on staff. I have done this kind of work for 21 years, and I can honestly say I am very blessed to be where I am. Please help recognize this hero in scrubs that is on the frontlines every day with us aides.

I would like to nominate my mother, Judy Green. She is the manager of the Cath Lab at Jane Phillips here in Bartlesville. From ICU to CCU to the Cath Lab... there’s nothing she hasn’t done. I’m not sure of the total years, but I’m almost 34 and she’s been there well before I was born. She is so dedicated to her job and her employees...putting in so so many hours a week. She’s not only the best mother around, but also the best nurse. She’s so kind, loving and caring, and I think she deserves this award. I’m sure all of her co-workers would vouch for that also!

Heather Cus is the Clinical Supervisor at St. John Jane Phillips. Heather does so many tasks and projects that might not be noticed for the ‘mandatory’ job. She is a busy bee always looking how she can make the workow of the oor better & loves helping her patients have a more enjoyable stay. Heather not only puts her everything into work but is also perusing to further her education while working full time and having a family.

She is an Emergency Room Nurse at Jane Phillips Medical Center. I believe Allison deserves this award because she not only is an amazing ER registered nurse, but also has just completed her studies to obtain a Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner. Busy....yes. Stressful times....yes. Thank goodness for her faith and life on the farm. But through all of this, still a great wife to my son Jimmy, as well as being an awesome mother to the three best grandchildren under the age of nine a PaPa T and Grammie could ask for!

I work with a very wonderful nurse, Revel. She is my Director of Nursing, and she has the most compassionate heart. Not only is she there for her patients but also for her employee. She is always there for us work related or not, and she always has the right thing to say. She really deserves it! She is totally a supper hero in scrubs! Adams PARC is truly lucky to have her on staff. I have done this kind of work for 21 years, and I can honestly say I am very blessed to be where I am. Pease help recognize this hero in scrubs that is on the frontlines every day with us aides.

CNA JANE PHILLIPS MEDICAL CENTER

Rachel Lyons is from Hominy, Ok and works for Cleveland Manor Nursing Home. She is a CNA, CMA and about RA and has been a loyal and dedicated employee for many years! I was her charge nurse on multiple occasions while I was employed there, and she is one of the most compassionate and dependable coworkers I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with! She was always willing to pick up extra shifts to ensure our residents were well taken care of! She is the mother of 3 and her husband is currently not working due to COVID-19. She is picking up even more shifts than usual, so I’m sure winning this would make her day and let her see how amazing and important she is!!

Tori Brown is more than deserving of this award because of the numerous sacriďŹ ces she makes for her patients at Jane Phillips Hospital as well as her family at home. She is currently 8-months pregnant and working 12-hour shifts as a CNA. She is a fulltime student taking night classes at TCC and raising her 8- year old son. She is a super woman. In the past 2 weeks, she has been exposed to two patients with COVID-19, putting her and her baby at high risk. Although it is unsafe for her, she still continues to serve her patients everyday. I pray that her and her family are blessed with this incredible award!

Crystal Kirchner is an RN at Jane Phillips. She struggled to pay her way through school to become an RN because she knew her calling was to help people in healthcare. To this day, she doesn’t turn down a shift when asked to work for someone else because if she did, someone may miss getting proper healthcare. She is a single mom who teaches her daughter the importance of helping others in their time of need whether it be healthcare or another profession.

Christy Thomas is an LPN and Director of Nursing at Jacquelyn House at AbilityWorks of Oklahoma, Inc.- I cannot say enough wonderful things about Christy and her dedication to the residents she serves. Christy does an outstanding job not only fulďŹ lling her role as the DON, but she is always willing and prepared to roll up her sleeves and work shifts along with everyone. Christy always puts the residents ďŹ rst and always comes from a place of compassion. Even in the midst of Covid-19, Christy continues to work tirelessly to ensure the best care is provided to our residents.

Trinity is a senior in high school. She became a CNA as a junior. She loves her job and is a very hard worker. She has worked 12 hour shifts any time there was a break from school. When the pandemic hit, she began working full-time at Adams PARC. She didn’t use it as a vacation, and is still currently working full-time, as well as ďŹ nishing school. She has continued to serve others as a CNA with a smile on her face, even as her Senior year was taken from her. No Prom, No Graduation. She plans to continue her studies and further her nursing degree. She would be a great example for other young girls. Show her that her hard work and dedication is noticed.

Ceara is the kindest, most compassionate person I have ever met. The way she cares for her patient's well-being goes above and beyond what the standard is for a healthcare professional. Every day, she comes home and tells me about her day at work. I can see how it affects her; she is happy when patients are doing better, sad when they are not, and devastated if they pass away. Their families can sense this and loves her for it. If anyone was born to be a nurse, it was her.

Nicole is an absolutely amazing nurse! She is a single mom that is very caring and compassionate. She works very hard, is very funny and always there for residents, families and the staff.

I would like to nominate Emily Stevenot. I was in Heritage Villa nursing home about 18 months ago for rehab. She and all personnel were extremely patient with me.

She’s a true HERO!

to all of you for your selfless hard work.

he Salute to Nurses publication has become an annual staple for the Examiner-Enterprise, allowing us to celebrate the crucial role nurses perform in health care.

Expecting a new baby in the next few days and planning for family life with her fiancé is a fun prospect for Brown who likes to spend her spare time fishing, visiting with friends and family and exercising at the YMCA. She is also excited about taking on the additional challenge of two years of occupational therapy training. “Even though it is still a few years away I am looking forward to switching into

the occupational therapy role as I will still get to help people and better their lives,” Brown said. “I look forward to continuing my career with this company and helping people get back to their lives while being independent.” In the meantime, Brown will keep working hard for her family and her patients who appreciate the extra effort she puts into caring for them. “I really love my job and I am blessed to have it and all the great co-workers that I have,” Brown said. “It really is like a big family, and we all help each other out and want what’s best for each other.”

JESSICA UPSHAW

MELINDA KAY

RN JANE PHILLIPS MEDICAL CENTER

CANDY DUNLAP

My daughter in law Candy Dunlap is amazing! She’s been taking care of her patients through this terrible time!
