ANNUAL REPORT

providing hope and recovery

2014

FROM THE CEO YEAR IN REVIEW The 2012-13 fiscal year was a study in contrasts, a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde year, if you will. Of course I would prefer to tell you only about Dr. Jekyll: our accomplishments and the progress of our members toward recovery, but I also must tell you about Mr. Hyde: our extreme financial challenges and their impact on our staff and members. We will begin with Mr. Hyde and get him out of the way. October, 2013 was the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Federal Community Mental Health Centers Act and ironically it has been the single most painful year of my 38 year career in mental health, including my 15 years at Bridgehaven. It has been a struggle to maintain hope and to create a hopeful environment for our members and our staff. This year due to changes in Medicaid reimbursement, Bridgehaven has fought for survival! Because of the system changes, we received no reimbursement from January through March from Medicaid, our primary funding source. To reduce expenses in every way possible we did not replace three clinicians who left during the year, nor did we replace the Clinical Director when she retired. We sustained ourselves through relentless pursuit of reimbursement due us and judicious use of our cash reserves. We were able to minimize the financial impact but it was not possible to reduce expenses sufficiently to offset the loss of revenue. My heart has broken a little each and every day just thinking about the possible consequences for our members and the community. Let’s move now to Dr. Jekyll and focus on the accomplishments of Bridgehaven and our members and our hope for the future. Because of our donors, because of your support, coupled with not filling positions, we finished the year still operating on our cash reserves and not needing to draw on a line of credit. I am so very grateful to our staff who now have larger case loads, more work to do and are working longer hours. They display a relentless commitment to the people we serve making sure that the services we provide are not diminished in quality. Thanks to the support of so many of you, during this year Bridgehaven has moved forward, continuing to offer innovative recovery programs to almost 500 people and our outcomes are

still outstanding! In partnership with Phoenix Health Center, JADAC and Wellspring we are part of a Federal grant offering Bridgehaven’s recovery services to chronically homeless persons who have received stable housing. The grant partners are helping these members reduce their substance use, decrease their symptoms of mental illness, decrease the time they spend in jail and maintain housing.

Thanks to you, our members, our board and staff accomplished great things, despite the funding challenges we experienced and will likely continue to experience through fiscal year 2014. However, for the 2015 fiscal year there are exciting changes on the horizon that once again promise better things for people with mental illness and for Bridgehaven’s capacity to provide ever more effective services. In January of 2014

Psychiatric hospitalizations were decreased by 90% We have graduated our second group of members from Cognitive Enhancement Therapy, an evidence based intervention that was implemented last year. The changes that result are life altering. Some members have returned to school and work. Because people with severe mental illness die 25 years sooner than the rest of the population and often receive inadequate medical care, we started the Bridges to Health Clinic to improve our members’ overall health. Through this clinic, funded by a grant from the Humana Foundation and operated by an RN and our Peer Specialist Health Advocate, 46% of participants lost an average of 22 pounds, 78% of participants reduced their blood pressures to normal limits, 50% of participants with diabetes reduced their blood sugar and 38% quit smoking. Wow! Psychiatric hospitalizations were decreased by 90%, saving almost $1 million in treatment costs, members achieved recovery goals at a 92% rate and they rate their quality of life as 74% positive. In December of 2012 we implemented an electronic medical record. This has improved the quality of our clinical documentation and streamlined operations. In March of 2013 we successfully completed our fifth accreditation survey. We received the highest accreditation possible from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehab Facilities (CARF): three years in psychosocial rehabilitation, intensive outpatient treatment and outpatient treatment.

many people who have never had health care coverage become eligible for health insurance or for Medicaid. Because of changes in Medicaid mental health benefits we hope to receive reimbursement for our Peer Support Specialist services and to offer a broader array of services for the people we serve. So, be gone, Mr. Hyde! There is hope and the expectation of success. We will replace the staff we lost and offer hope and health to a new group of people who will have access to mental health care for the first time. You give us hope. You lift us up with your encouragement, your financial support and your affirmation. Thank you for your loyalty, support and passion for Bridgehaven’s mission. Bridgehaven is indeed a place where hope is alive and recovery is achieved every day in many ways. Gratefully, Ramona Johnson APRN, CS

MEMBER STORY CHARLES

My name is John and I’m a member at Bridgehaven, I’d like to share that MY recovery reflects ACCEPTANCE.

homelessness, many hospitalizations, crack drug addiction, a year in jail and untreated mental illnesses.

I was born in 1954 and grew up in New Hampshire and Florida. As an only child, for years and years I lived in a literal war zone of alcoholism, rageaholism, hoarding, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, divorce, fear, being passed from family to family, and not coping with undiagnosed mental illnesses. In my adult life I have learned a great deal about my bi-polar

With the stepping stones of many agencies in our community, I found an oasis of acceptance called Bridgehaven three years ago. The workers and participants there are amazing! It has positively impacted and changed my life forever being able to interact and humbly share with people who have been living with my same or similar illnesses. It was finally the unconditional

THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU disorder as well as the obvious post-traumatic stress disorder from my childhood. In 1969 at the age of 15, I heard Bach played for the first time on an organ…..I came home, sat at the piano and played back the beautiful music that I had heard! At the time, I didn’t realize that not everyone could do this…..but I hardly cared, because I had found my niche’ AND a way to escape from my war zone and my miserable reality. Music and voracious reading gave my heart and life the peace and passion that had been missing. As an adult, now in Kentucky, I had many years of what appeared to be normal. earning a nursing degree from UL, a 17 marriage to my wife Pam for whom I served as a care-giver due to her condition of Muscular Dystrophy, and a thriving career as an OR Technician. Chaos ensued after Pam’s death. This can do things to a man. Over the next three years my home was foreclosed, I was unemployed, I faced

positive regard I had never really had in my life that meant so much, and turned my world around. All of this newfound support led to a brand new active life that included a stable housing situation, sobriety, the understanding of my illness, healthier relationships, and the rediscovery of my passion for music. Last year I was offered a full scholarship to IUS’s Master of Music program. I’m shocked and thrilled to be studying music again and feeling my heart soar! Thanks to everyone at Bridgehaven for being an integral part of this process and providing an atmosphere of acceptance of who I really am. And I cannot sing highly enough of the Dual Diagnosis program as well. Now I can see my true recovery and I have learned to accept and love myself. Thank you; I’m so grateful.
