The nude has been a subject in art since our prehistoric ancestors first put charcoal to wall. As the one medium we have to communicate with one another and to experience the world around us – let alone beyond us – it is natural that it should be a subject in art. The nude has been both praised and vilified, depending upon what religious or political opinion happened to be holding sway.Artists approach the nude with as many points of view as there are artists. Some use the figure in narratives, others as the subject itself. The artists in this exhibition come from a variety of traditions and use different techniques in different media. All of them, however, celebrate their subject in a way that invites us to join in the celebration.
