LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Magic Meets the Eye Switzerland, a small mountainous country in the heart of Europe, can take one’s breath away by its many lakes, quaint villages and the snow-filled peaks of the Alps. The beauty simply offers the beholder an experience as sweet as the Swiss chocolate itself. Croatia on the other hand, gives us limitless sandy beaches and clear blue skies that magically meet clear blue waters at the far horizon; not to mention the charms and mysteries of several UNESCO world heritage sites and gorgeous national parks, as illustrated on page 16. In our magical world, one only needs to surrender to the wonder of what every land and culture has to offer. Travelling the world opens the eyes to untold beauties and the heart to unsung stories: stories that make us one with the earth’s elements and give meaning to our path for better living. For example, there are moments when one can get lost and wholly absorbed in the bewitching views of Belize’s natural sites. Imagine the experience of seeing, and creating lasting memories of this land’s various water wonders and some of the globe’s best coral reefs; not to mention the Great Blue Hole, which provides one of the best scubadiving experiences anyone could dream of having. Nothing can even come close to exploring first hand some 600 ruins in Belize reflective of the ancient civilization of the Maya People with extraordinary coves separating the awe-inspiring pyramids. Each destination with its own distinct characteristics and beauty as well is its unique culture and people, can open the eyes to vistas of unimaginable possibilities: possibilities that can only be experienced with one’s own senses and intellect. Each destination is a new story and a new beginning for a life that can only herald a more magical adventure with the next journey. At EVOKE we LIVE the spirit of exploration, and with each page and each image we offer a new beginning to a new dream. It’s a beautiful big world out there, come explore its magic with us.

Caribbean Declares 2019 “YEAR OF FESTIVALS”

T R AV E L N E W S

On the heels of the past year’s successful Year of Rejuvenation, the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) has declared 2019 the Year of Festivals in the Caribbean. Throughout 2019, the region will celebrate the unique rhythm and tempo of each CTO destination. The Year of Festivals will focus on the fascinating events that have become an integral part of the Caribbean tourism calendar. Festivals help to energize communities across the region, while giving visitors more reasons to enjoy our destinations,” said Hugh Riley, Secretary General of CTO. “In addition to providing an opportune time for vacationers to visit, these celebrations also emphasize the unique characteristics that define the many diverse backgrounds and traditions which comprise the Caribbean’s cultural tapestry,” added Riley. 12

CRUSING The Seven Sees

La Santa Maria, a mere 70-feet-long, slow vessel, was a tiny Spanish boat that brought Christopher Columbus to America. The years following saw many a great Ocean Liners, such as the SS Normandy, the Aquitania, the Queen Marie and the well-known Titanic – to name a few! But it was not until the middle of the 20th century, when sea-travel became more than getting from A to B, and people everywhere began to consider the travel itself as the main part of the holiday; thus the advent of the ever-evolving Cruise-ship industry.

Silversea Cruise Ship

And now at the onset of the 21st Century, one can look forward to a 140-day world cruise, featuring a stop in every single continent. This all-inclusive, luxury cruise priced at over $60,000 per person is surely a far cry from Christopher Columbus’ tiny vessel.

GREEK ISLANDS

SUMPTUOUS S U N S E T S

Croatia’s 1,800-km coastline alone -- with hundreds of tiny islands, the turquoisecolored Adriatic, and glorious mountains -- is enough to take one’s breath away. Yet, as beautiful as the scenery is, and as mesmerizing as the sunsets the scenic coastline offers; there is so much more about Croatia that has remained mostly unknown.

CROATIA TOURISM BOARD

At the crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe, on the shores of Adriatic Sea stands a charming little country of only a little over 5 million population. Being blessed with so many natural wonders and historic sites within its borders, it’s no wonder that Croatia is rising in popularity as a tourist destination for the North American traveler.

one can therefore move from wonder to wonder satisfying the senses with not only natural beauty.

Many may not be aware, for example, that the area presently known as Zadar, the oldest city in Croatia, can trace back to the late Stone Age with a number of settlements dating as far back as the Neolithic Age. The country offers so much history and culture that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has inscribed 10 sites on its list of World Heritage Sites, with 15 more sites remaining on its tentative list. Traveling Croatia, one can therefore move from wonder to wonder satisfying the senses with not only natural beauty, but also with cultural and historic sites presenting a scintillating background. The ancient city walls alone can keep one’s attention, as the mind marvels at their character. The Plitvice National Park, on the other hand - with its beautiful 16 Technicolor crystalline lakes, waterfalls and cascades - is a visual bliss with which to feast the eyes. Traveling south, one finds Krka National Park with mighty waterfalls and gorgeous pools of turquoise, blue, green and grey. The waterfalls feature educational components which can leave you with insight

into the diversity of the forest and other natural resources. For the rock-lover and rock-climber, Croatia offers its Paklenica National Park, known for its canyons, hard-rock formations and striking blackpine forests. This park is also home to eagles, falcons, bears and deer. The culture of this quaint European nation goes a long way to make everything even more appealing with the amazing live Jazz and Blues performances on the streets over the summer; while the taste buds are tantalized by the culinary trends and the abundance of signature dishes. One can simply not go wrong with everything that this beautiful country has to offer and the hospitality that its warm and friendly population generously imparts. The tourism season in Croatia is most popular from spring throughout the summer; however its mild Mediterranean climate makes the journey pleasant all year around. When visiting Croatia, George Bernard Shaw was particularly enchanted by the old city of Dubrovnik, and calling it “the Pearl of the Adriatic”, he said: “Those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik.” 19

O

n the edge of the great Himalayas lies a mystical Buddhist country, which is evolving more than any other tourist spot in Asia. Welcome to Bhutan, one of the most intriguing places on earth, famous for its government’s ideology of measuring the population’s happiness and well-being in an index identified as “Gross National Happiness”. In an effort to keep the country as a spiritual sanctuary free of commercialism, and the beautiful natural environment unaffected, this peaceful nation remained isolated and virtually inaccessible for tourism until 1974. The land is fully endowed with exquisite greenery, while the law demands that more than 60% of the country remains forested. The scenic beauty of the country is further enhanced by the mighty peaks of the Himalayas, wild rice-field landscapes and stunning ancient monasteries. For the last couple of years since skiing has been allowed as a tourist attraction, the winters see many enthusiastic skiers visiting the mountains. Bhutan’s hotels make the adventure even more special for skiers by providing them with guides, who carry their gear on horses or Yaks. Along the way, travelers can often meet monks and learn ancient meditation techniques from them, while being warmly welcomed by the local inhabitants and offered simple home-cooked meals. 27

hen on a Bhutan trip, a pilgrimage to the famous, cliff-side, Tiger’s Nest Monastery, is simply a must. The area is an ultimate hiking destination, surrounded by singing birds and colorful flowers, and almost always home to interesting Buddhist festivals. The Monastery itself is a sacred Buddhist site, constructed in 1692 around the cave where Guru Rinpoche first meditated for 3 years, 3 months, 3 days and 3 hours. The Monastery derives its name, Tiger’s Nest, from a legendary tale that Guru Rinpoche was carried to the site on the back of a tigress.

When on a Bhutan trip, a pilgrimage to the famous, cliff-side, Tiger’s Nest Monastery, is simply a must.

The Monastery is located 10 miles North of Paro, which is a 20-minute car ride; however, one would need approximately 4 to 5 hours to hike to the site itself, and a little over an hour to visit the Monastery, making for a full day’s adventure. Ultimately this secret cultural treasure-trove situated between India and China - and distinguished by its breathtaking rhododendrons, peaceful culture, some 400 bird species, unique architecture, and myriads of paper flags – stands at the foot of the Himalaya’s proud of its abundant respect for nature.

T

he 19th Century United States saw an insurgence of immigrants pouring into the country from across the globe, and especially from Europe. New York being a major port on the shores of the Atlantic was a favored destination, especially for the Italians, who congregated along Mulberry Street and formed what is today known as Little Italy. Naturally the newcomers were homesick, having to deal with the ordeals of adjusting to a new climate, a new language, and a whole new culture; so the entrepreneurs amongst them set out to create ethnic eateries to bring a little bit of home to the new land of opportunities.

34

Italian cuisine in North America arguably took roots in New York, and then spread throughout the rest of the United States. While today one may be able to order a delectable antipasto platter, tuna-stuffed peppers, baked clams, tagatiatelle Bolognese, eggplant parmesan, melt-in-your-mouth meatballs, and many more Italian specialties anywhere in the country, the trend for Italian food in North America started in NYC’s Little Italy. Some of these eateries from the 1890s, like the Ferrara Café and Bakery, which is actually known to have been the first café in the United States to introduce Espresso, still stands as a Land Mark in the heart of Little Italy.

1. BUSY BRUNCHES Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., the café is usually bustling with a full house. The morning and afternoon menus offer Breakfast Panini, Steak & Eggs, and mouthwatering waffles topped with Gelato to an eager clientele, who goes to Ferrara not only for the good food, but also for the thoughtful service and the enjoyable social atmosphere. 2. COOKING WITH KIDS Ferrara also offers cooking parties of up to 30 participants, designed to teach children to prepare and cook pizza in a safe and clean atmosphere. Kids start by learning how to prepare the dough, while encouraged to cook with love. They are taught to pass along the love in their hearts through their hands into the food they prepare. The exercise helps children appreciate the art of cooking and food preparation more keenly.

3. PANINI An Italian eating experience is hardly satisfying without the establishment’s own home-made Panini, which Ferrara proudly bakes with wholesome ingredients. Ferrara’s Panini is prepared with a light enough texture that satisfies the ardent sandwich-lover, while allowing room for the café’s delightful deserts.

4. GELATO Ferrara Café & Bakery is a guilt-free paradise for enjoying Gelato, inasmuch as the café offers a variety of lowfat, low-sugar, high-protein choices, still keeping that decadent taste that is so admired in a dessert. In fact, many visit the Bakery, simply to try its wide variety of delectable Gelato.

espite the large population, avant-garde modernization, top-of-the-line technology and dominating a large share of global business, Tokyo remains a sought-after mystery for its faithful commitment to culture and history. It is indeed a metropolitan fused with the best that the Eastern and Western worlds can offer – not to mention the incredible aesthetic of the beautiful streets lined with greenery. The streets look especially magical in April when cherry blossoms fill the nation for as far as the eye can see.

Professional sports clubs are also amongst the city’s special features. But all of these will take a back seat to the sporting events of the 2020 Olympics Games. The Summer Olympics in Japan plans to attract more young peoples to the games, and to blaze trails by reflecting on the new trends in urbanization of sports. Organizing Committees in Japan are also formulating new techniques in order to utilize cutting-edge technology in managing the games, welcoming the athletes and accommodating the spectators.

Staying in Tokyo, one may easily run out of time with the many cultural attractions the city has to offer such as sumo wrestling, internationally renowned cuisine, art galleries and museums. Tokyo is also a city poignantly rich in the performing arts and music, ranging from Classical Japanese works to modern-day pieces.

One can only imagine the overwhelming number of people who will naturally storm the city in the summer of 2020 to see the magic of the city and that of the Olympics coming together to introduce an unforgettable experience that would be cherished for years to come.

STYLE COMPASS: PARIS

NEVER GET CAUGHT OFF GUARD Femme Fatale in Paris 2019

F

ashion in the 21st Century is very much defined by personalized choices and the comforts, which the modern-day woman seeks in both casual wear, as well as haut couture! It is natural then to see such an array of designers emerging continuously to offer something new and exciting to the world of fashion.

The world may just be experiencing a whirlwind in the garment industry today, and fashion capitals such as New York, Toronto, London, Tokyo, Dubai, and Milan amongst many others, may have planted aloft their banners; but no one can deny the fact that Paris has been and continues to be the Fashion capital of the globe.

Fashion to France is what the gold mines of Peru are to Spain

SIMON ACKERMAN AT ELIE SAAB

Jean-Baptist Colbert is known to have said that “fashion to France is what the gold mines of Peru are to Spain”. Every century has, in this exotic yet serene city, held its own character in fashion depending on the exigencies of the day, and so the industry has evolved through the years to meet the ever-advancing requirements of a fast-growing consumer with a vast range of tastes and pallets.

Appealing to this wide variety of consumers is an array of fashion houses in Paris to please even the strangest of tastes in clothing. For the younger Prada version Miu Miu accompanies the Peter Panesque in cobra print skirts suited with pin striped jackets and sheer blouses like chameleon. Garments are wardrobed with ornaments and silver trailing bows for a necklace, like an Amazon Princess. Chanel beauty, “Let’s go to the beach, the water’s fine” Karl Lagerfeld, with his runway show on the sandy shore, right in the middle of the Grand Palais.

LOVING YOUR VALENTINE

in Paris

The “City of Light” exudes romance, passion and fantasy in all of its splendor

1. World Famous Cabaret Feast your senses at the world’s most famous cabaret, Moulin Rouge, the iconic landmark of Paris nightlife since 1889. Start the evening with an exquisite dinner of French cuisine and champagne, amongst the magnificent splendor of the belle époque décor draped with red velvet, burlesque frescoes, and colorful bright lights. Stay for the magnificent performance featuring beautiful dancers in flamboyant dress. Be mesmerized as the cancan dancers’ extravagant feathered costumes sparkle with sequins and rhinestones. The windmill cancan cabaret hall has never stopped firing fun, elegance and glamour.

2. Point-shoe Elegance Paris is certainly considered a trailblazer in the world of Arts & Entertainment, capable of pleasing any discerning audience; and as such no performance short of “excellent” is expected of the city’s Opera Ballet. So if you are in the city of light for Valentine’s Day, bedazzle yourself with the Opera Bastille’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, and watch a young princess on elegant point shoes be turned into a swan by an evil witch. Will her prince save the day?

3. A Landmark, a monument or an Art Museum The Louvre is most definitely all of the above and more. Sitting magnificently on the banks of the river Seine, is a castle built in the 12th century as a defensive fortress, which later became home to Royalty. This architectural masterpiece is now the most celebrated and visited art museum in the world, and holds some 38,000 objects. So, take your valentine and behold such beautiful works of art as the “Mona Lisa”, the “Venus De Milo”, and many more romantically influenced pieces. E SSENTIAL SW I T Z E R L A N D T R AV E L L I N G T I P S 1. Learn Which Language is Spoken: “Swiss” is not a language. Instead, Switzerland has four national languages: German, French, Italian, and some regional dialects such as Romansh. This can make it pretty confusing when deciding how to greet a local. It is a small country so it’s completely possible to go from a Swiss German-speaking section of the country to French in less than an hour. As a general rule, Swiss-German is a safe bet, as it’s the most popular language in Switzerland. 2. Use Public Transport: When traveling around Switzerland, the train system is pretty efficient along with other means of public transport. It is easy to navigate, with well-marked signage for routes and countdown clocks that let you know when your bus will arrive. Most cities and towns in Switzerland are walkable as well. Avoiding taxis is strongly recommended. In fact, a recent survey by Carspring found that the taxis in Zurich are the most expensive in the world, at an average of $5.19 per kilometer. 3. Do not buy bottled water: Save plastic and money and don’t buy bottled water in Switzerland. Tap water is perfectly safe to drink. Switzerland is home to some of the world’s cleanest and best-tasting tap water. In fact, in some places, you can even drink straight from a lake with no ill effects. You can drink from any tap or one of the numerous free-flowing fountains you’ll find in every town, city, and sometimes even along mountain trails. 4. Mind the Altitude: Headed to the Swiss Alps? Thanks to the great network of cable cars, trains, and gondolas, it’s easy to get up to high altitudes quickly. Make sure you bring sunscreen with you, as you’ll get sunburn faster at higher altitudes. Don’t push yourself too hard if you’re hiking, and take breaks if you feel lightheaded or dizzy—even if you’re just walking around a viewing platform. Be sure to drink lots of water, as that can help with some of the effects. 5. Check Out Less Touristic Spots: Famous spots like Lausanne and Zurich get packed with tourists in the peak season, so if you’re adventurous and don’t mind getting off the beaten path, you’ll be rewarded with a cheaper and less crowded vacation experience. Try lesserknown towns of Biel, Solothurn, and Thun — you’ll likely never have to deal with crowds or lines. 6. Watch Out for Closing Times: Hoping to do some souvenir shopping or pick up groceries for a picnic dinner? Keep an eye on closing times. Particularly in the smaller towns, many shops close for lunch from noon until 2 pm, and then close fairly early, at around 5 pm. On Sundays and Mondays, many shops are closed all day.
