lthough more than 5 years have passed since October 2nd, 2006, I still clearly remember the moment I walked through Samsung doorway. I expected to see a large organization furnished with single-type cubicles, but Samsung’s office looked small and cozy. The only interview I had was done by AV business manager Mr. Chiwan Jae, and it took us less than 10 minutes. All Mr. Jae wanted to know was my motivation to join Samsung. I explained that big companies open big doors and we shook hands. I was thrilled with the offer and did not take seriously his “Welcome to hell!” instead of congratulations.

Cultural differences Вводное слово редактора Уважаемые коллеги, Как сообщалось в предыдущем номере, начиная с этого месяца у нас появилась страничка, посвященная культурным различиям между корейцами и украинцами. Эта колонка поможет нам лучше понять друг друга и узнать интересные особенности о другой нации. Её автором специально для нашей компании выступит специалист в области корейской культуры - Ирина Марушевская. В этом номере вы сможете больше узнать о проявлении эмоций у корейцев и о ключевых их отличиях от нашего традиционного поведения.
Эмоции по-корейски
В
озможно, для многих корейский бизнесмен отождествляется со сдержанным азиатом в строгом костюме, которому чуждо любое проявление эмоций или переживаний. Однако такое впечатление кореец может произвести только на случайного партнера по бизнесу, не имевшего с ним дело ранее. Для тех, кто работает и общается с корейскими специалистами на постоянной основе, ясно, что это всего лишь очередной миф, навеянный, вероятно, представлением о японской манере поведения и бизнес-этикете. На самом же деле корейцы очень и очень эмоциональны. Тем, кто тесно сотрудничает с представителями этой нации, не надо приводить примеры такой повышенной эмоциональности. Не редки инциденты, когда корейский начальник в порыве негодования может бросить в подчиненного первым попавшимся под руку предметом – будь то карандаш или даже бутылка с водой. Поэтому у украинцев, работающих под началом корейцев, обычно вырабатывается прекрасная реакция. Но не стоит строго судить за такие бурные проявления национального темперамента, ведь, согласно корейскому менталитету и представлению о социальной иерархии, если вы младше не только по возрасту, а и по статусу и должности, к вам вполне позволительно проявлять подобные знаки неуважения. Корейцы очень требовательны в работе. В их понимании нужно костьми лечь, но выполнить поставленные начальником задания: неповиновение недопустимо, лень неприемлема, а неорганизованность – это тяжкий грех. Когда корейские руководители сталкиваются с чем-то из названного выше, нерадивому работнику приходится тяжко. Однако есть в этом и существенный плюс: эмоциональные люди по определению не могут быть злопамятными, поэтому корейцы, как правило, быстро отходят после бури, и у Вас появляется прекрасная возможность компенсировать свою оплошность усердностью. Еще одним проявлением эмоций у корейцев служат легкие побои и похлопывания. Как корейские мужчины, так и женщины любят хорошенько треснуть собеседника по спине, голове или плечу. Причины могут быть самими разными: удовольствие от общения, одобрение, негодование, ярость или

This column is prepared for our company by a specialist in Korean culture - Irina Marushevskaya. In this issue you will take an insight into emotions expressed by Korean people and how they differ from our typical behaviour.

or many people a Korean businessman is identified as a reserved Asian in a strict outfit with no emotions or feelings. This impression can be made by a new business partner who has never dealt with a Korean before. However, those who regularly work and communicate with Koreans understand that this opinion is another myth brought to life probably by a Japanese style of behavior and business etiquette. Actually, Koreans are very emotional. People who closely cooperate with them need no examples of such bursting emotionality. Sometimes in case you haven’t done your job properly, a Korean chef may throw at you any object within reach of his hand – a pencil or even a bottle of water. That’s why Ukrainians headed by Koreans usually have good reaction. We should not judge such volcanic emotions too strictly. Korean mentality and their believes about social hierarchy let them behave disrespectfully towards you if you are younger or have lower status or junior position. Koreans are very demanding when it concerns the job. They strongly believe that it is impossible not to fulfill the tasks given to you by your chef: disobedience is forbidden, laziness is not acceptable and being disorganized is a heavy sin. When Koreans come across any of these, a guilty worker will be given a bed of nails. However, there is a positive side here – emotional people are never vindictive and Koreans, as a rule, quickly calm down after the storm and you have another chance to compensate your mistake by working hard. Another demonstration of emotions is slight beating and patting. Koreans, both men and women, like to beat a person they are talking to on his back, head or shoulder. Reasons can be different: excitement, approval, indignation, rage or just to fill in a pause between words. At first, you may be shocked with it but later you get used. It can even become a kind of indicator of an attitude to you. For example, the more often you get “friendly” beating and patting, the more your Korean

Cultural differences просто так, чтобы заполнить словесную паузу. Поначалу это может шокировать работников, но со временем они привыкают. Это даже становится неким индикатором отношения к человеку. Если говорить о «дружеских» ударах и похлопываниях, то чем сильнее и чаще вас бьет кореец – тем больше вы ему нравитесь. А если вы числитесь в любимчиках или просто у корейца-начальника отличное настроение, можно еще и получить разминающий массаж плеч. Но приготовьтесь: массаж делать будут с усердием, нежным натурам он может показаться даже болезненным. Неоспоримым доказательством эмоциональности корейцев также является тот факт, что они очень громко разговаривают и смеются. Будь то разговор двух подруг, или веселая компания в «сульджибе» (кор. бар, питейное заведение), или обсуждение нового проекта на работе – спокойного, размеренного разговора не ждите. Это всегда фейерверк эмоций, включающий в себя громкий смех, вышеупомянутые побои и повышенные тона. Посмотрите любое корейское телешоу и убедитесь сами, насколько эмоциональны представители этой нации. Кстати говоря, такие телешоу очень популярны – их смотрит практически каждый житель страны, особенно юмористические передачи. Часто можно наблюдать картину в сеульском метро: полный вагон корейцев, смотрящих телевизор на телефоне (в корейских телефонах зачастую встроена антенна, ловящая телеканалы даже в подземке), которые то и дело хохочут с очередной шутки ведущего. Во время своего пребывания в Корее я не заметила каких-то особенных жестов, выражающих эмоции. В целом для корейцев не свойственна эмоциональная жестикуляция, они заменяют ее повышенными тонами, растягиванием конечных слогов в предложении и добавлением специфических окончаний, которые могут придавать различные оттенки, например уважения, дружеского отношения и т. д. По моему мнению, такая корейская эмоциональность скорее плюс, чем минус. Люди, не скрывающие своих эмоций, зачастую более открыты для общения, искренние и добродушные. Нужно только научиться понимать их.

chef likes you. And if you happen to be among his favorites, or he is in a perfect mood, you can even get a warming but hard massage of shoulders that sometimes can seem really painful. Another undisputable evidence of Korean emotionality is their habit to talk and laugh loudly. It can be a talk of two girlfriends or a merry party in a suldjib (Korean bar) or a meeting to discuss a new project – you will never hear a calm talking but a firework of emotions including loud laughing, beating and high tones. Watch any Korean TV show and you will see with your own eyes how emotional Koreans can be. By the way, TV shows, especially comic, are extremely popular in Korea – almost everyone watches them. In Seoul’s subway you may see as a full wagon of Koreans watch TV on their phones (many phones in Korea have a TV-tuner that “catches” TV signal even under the ground) and burst out laughing with no embarrassment at any joke they hear. During my stay in Korea I didn’t notice any special gestures expressing emotions. Actually, Koreans don’t tend to use emotional gestures; instead they may use high tones, prolong final syllable in a phrase or add special endings with definite meanings – respect, friendliness and so on. To my mind this Korean emotionality is rather advantage than disadvantage. People who do not hide their emotions are often more sincere and easy-going. We just need to learn how to understand them. октября 2006 года прошло уже более пяти лет, но я очень отчетливо помню тот момент, когда впервые пришел в Samsung. Я ожидал увидеть огромное помещение с однотипными секциями, однако на самом деле офис Samsung оказался довольно небольшим и уютным. Я прошел единственное собеседование – с менеджером подразделения AV мистером Чи Ван Дже, и наш разговор не продлился и 10 минут. Все, что мистер Дже хотел знать – это почему я хочу работать в Samsung. Я пояснил, что большие компании открывают большие возможности, и мы пожали друг другу руки. Я был очень рад, что получил эту работу, и не воспринял всерьез слова «Добро пожаловать в ад!» вместо поздравления. Однако первые несколько месяцев работы в Samsung действительно оказались кошмаром. К сожалению, иногда я ощущал, что мне не хватает корпоративных тренингов и вводных курсов. Вот только один пример: весь ноябрь 2006 года я потратил на обновление GSCM и при этом понятия не имел, для чего это нужно! Но другие участники команды приложили максимум усилий для того, чтобы помочь мне выжить в этой экстремальной

I expected to see a large organization furnished with single-type cubicles, but Samsung’s office looked small and cozy. The only interview I had was done by AV business manager Mr. Chiwan Jae, and it took us less than 10 minutes. All Mr. Jae wanted to know was my motivation to join Samsung. I explained that big companies open big doors and we shook hands. I was thrilled with the offer and did not take seriously his “Welcome to hell!” instead of congratulations. First several months of my career in Samsung were a nightmare indeed. Unfortunately, sometimes I felt lack of trainings and introduction courses from the company. One example for illustration: after four weeks of updating GSCM in November 2006 I still did not know what had I been doing it for! The tough jaw-breaking environment was nevertheless alleviated by other team members who exerted maximum efforts to help me to survive. Without assistance from Oksana Paslavska, Yury Ratushnyi and other colleagues I might have given up in the beginning! Several months later I eventually sorted things out and breathed with relief – first round had been won.

обстановке. Думаю, что не будь Оксаны Паславской, Юрия Ратушного и других коллег, я бы сдался в самом начале. Однако через несколько месяцев я уже начал понимать что к чему и вздохнул спокойно – первый раунд я выдержал. Мой первый руководитель в Samsung, мистер Дже, стал моим учителем и сыграл ключевую роль в моем карьерном росте. Сильный и харизматичный лидер, он учил меня тому, что бизнес должен быть простым, что делать ошибки – это естественно (но только не глупые!), что каждое решение должно быть логичным, а настоящий руководитель – смелым и не избегать ответственности, что важно получать удовольствие от работы и т. п. Думаю, что в первые два года он оказал на меня очень сильное влияние и внес большой вклад в формирование моего характера. Мои коллеги иногда спрашивают, в чем секрет моего успеха, особенно на начальном этапе. Полагаю, что этот секрет – отношение к работе и чувство ответственности. Когда я осознал, что мои решения оказывают огромное влияние на бизнес стоимостью 300 млн долларов, то я делал все, чтобы не провалить дело. Вместе с другими членами подразделения AV я подолгу задерживался в офисе и работал по выходным, а главное, постоянно задавал себе вопрос: «Вел бы я бизнес точно так же, если бы он был моим личным?» Еще одним важным фактором стало то, что я рос и развивался вместе с Samsung. За 5 лет я видел многое: успех, финансовый кризис, реструктуризацию рынка, смену руководителей и другие многочисленные изменения. В ответ на стремительное изменение рынка менялась и наша компания: мы стали гораздо более опытными и гибкими. Еще одной составляющей моего успеха, безусловно, было то, что я принял новую политику Samsung и способствовал ее реализации. Тот день, когда меня назначили руководителем по продуктовому маркетингу, стал для меня важной вехой. Был ли я рад? Конечно. В теории большим преимуществом новой должности было то, что я мог бы заниматься решением стратегических задач. Однако в момент назначения на эту должность я был единственным сотрудником группы продуктового маркетинга, поэтому сначала нужно было создать свою группу! Вместе с тем это упрощало некоторые аспекты, такие как «притирка» характеров с подчиненными. Став руководителем группы, я понял, что быть нача льником – это большая отв етс тв еннос ть. Курировать работу и поддерживать участников группы, делегировать задачи, принимать решения гораздо сложнее, чем я представлял себе раньше. Кроме того, мои задачи не сводятся только лишь к получению финансовых и количественных результатов, мне необходимо еще вдохновлять свою группу, поддерживать в ней благоприятный психологический климат. Если бы два года назад меня спросили, хороший ли я специалист по продуктовому маркетингу, то я ответил бы «да». Если же меня спросят сейчас, хороший ли я руководитель, то я отвечу: «Не знаю. Спросите лучше у моих сотрудников». В заключение хотел бы подчеркнуть, что важно расти вместе с Samsung. Теоретические знания – это прекрасно, но без практического опыта работы на рынке нельзя стать хорошим специалистом. Думаю, что Samsung дает отличную возможность приобрести такой опыт. Я хотел бы пожелать нашим новым сотрудникам запастись терпением и преодолеть все трудности, с которыми они здесь могут столкнуться, особенно на начальном этапе. Будьте уверены в бренде Samsung, гордитесь своей работой и добивайтесь невозможного! Я убежден, что каждый из вас сможет достичь амбициозных целей и в будущем стать настоящими лидером!
Mr. Jae, my first boss in Samsung, became my teacher and played a crucial role in my career development. Being a strong and charismatic leader he demonstrated that business should be simple, that making mistakes is natural (but not stupid ones!), that each decision requires logical basis, that true leaders must have guts and not escape responsibility, that having fun is important in business and many other things. I believe his influence on me was pretty strong during the first two years in the company and heavily contributed to my personality. My fellow colleagues sometimes ask me what the secrets of my success were, especially at the initial stage. I think it was mostly about attitude to work and sense of ownership. When I realized I had huge impact on the 300 million dollar business I did everything not to mess up. Together with other AV team members I worked long hours and weekends, and most important, I kept asking myself one question: “Would I do business in the same way if it was my own money?” Another important factor was growth and evolvement together with Samsung. Within 5 years I witnessed success, financial crisis, market restructuring, shift of power and numerous challenges. To encounter rapidly changing business environment Samsung changed too - we became much more sophisticated in operations and approaches. Accepting and driving the Company’s new policies was undoubtedly a part of my own success. The day I was appointed as the Head of product marketing was to some extend a great milestone. Was I excited? Sure, the big theoretical advantage that came with the new position was possibility to focus on more strategic issues. However, at the time of appointment I was the only person in the PM group, therefore my challenge was to create a group first! On the other hand, it simplified certain aspects such as choosing behavioral pattern with the colleagues who became my subordinates. Power is responsibility – this is what I learnt from being a group leader. Supervising and supporting group members, delegating jobs, taking decisions are much more complicated things that I imagined before. Moreover, my targets are not narrowed down to financial of qualitative outcomes, but include inspiration and maintaining good mood within my group. If somebody asked me two years ago whether or not I was a good PM, I would answer positively. If they ask me now whether or not I’m a good leader – I don’t know, let this one be addressed to my people. As an afterword I want to emphasize how growing together with Samsung is important. Academic knowledge is fine, but without practical experience in real market noone can become a good businessman. Samsung offers a great opportunity to get it. Therefore, let me wish our newcomers to endure and overcome all difficulties that they may have here, especially during the initial stage. What’s your biggest motivation in life? My biggest motivation is to find a work/ life balance: to have a job I like and have a time for my family, friends and interests. I believe that this will help meto grow as a specialist and as a personality. What was your first impression about SEUC? My first impression was WOW :) so many people and everybody smiles to you :) Describe your perfect day (day-off, vacation, etc). The best vacation in my life I spent in Prague 3 years ago. It was my 1st trip abroad. My dream is visiting Prague again. Ваша главная мотивация в жизни? Главная мотивация для меня – это найти правильный баланс между работой и личной жизнью: иметь любимую работу и находить время для семьи, друзей и увлечений. Я верю, что это помогло бы мне не только вырасти профессионально, но и как личность. Ваши первые впечатления от SEUC? Первым впечатлением было: Wow! :) так много людей вокруг и все тебе улыбаются :) Опишите ваш идеа льный день (выходной, отпуск, др.). Свой лучший отпуск я провела в Праге три года назад. Это была моя первая зарубежная поездка. Мечтаю снова поехать в Прагу.

What’s your biggest motivation in life? My motivation is quite simple: my wife, she is the most close person for me that I treasure most in my life. I feel sorry because I dedicate most of my time to my work, and now in Kiev I miss her support. What was your first impression about SEUC? Since I have spent one year in Moscow I am a little bit familiar with your culture, but Ukraine is still different. I really like current weather in Kiev, I really love this season. And I have to admit that in Kiev people are more friendly than in Moscow. My major is Russian literature, so I always wanted to visit Kiev when I was a student. So now I’m happy to be here. Describe your perfect day (day-off, vacation, etc). My perfect day was at the time I was at Maldives, it has been truly unforgettable. Really calm, no people around. Seemed like heaven. Ваша главная мотивация в жизни? Моя мотивация достаточно проста – это моя жена, самый близкий мне человек, которым я дорожу больше всего. Очень жаль, что большую часть своего времени я посвящаю работе, и сейчас в Киеве мне очень не хватает ее поддержки. Ваши первые впечатления от SEUC? Так как я провел год в Москве, я немного знаком с вашей к ультурой, хотя Украина все-таки иная. Мне очень нравится сегодняшняя погода в Киеве, я особенно люблю это время года. Хочу отметить, что люди в Киеве более доброжелательны чем в Москве. Во время учебы моей специализацией была русская литература, поэтому мне всегда хотелось посетить Киев. Сейчас я очень рад, что здесь. Опишите ваш идеа льный день (выходной, отпуск, др.). Свой идеальный день я провел на Мальдивах. Это было действительно незабываемо. Тишина и никого вокруг. Казалось, ты в раю.
What’s your biggest motivation in life? For me the biggest motivation is my desire. I believe that if you dream about something, it will surely come true. However, you must work hard to reach your goal. There are plenty of methods of how to do it, one of them is to draw up definite plans. If you set a deadline for your dream, it becomes your goal; if you divide your goal into pieces, they become your plans. Now you have just to implement them.What was your first impression about SEUC? What was your first impression about SEUC? After five years of living and studying in Ukraine, this country became my second homeland. All of my old friends and trainers, all SEUC colleagues welcomed me warmly and friendly. It is really nice to meet you! Describe your perfect day (day-off, vacation, etc). Every new day is special for me. And if I imagine my perfect day how it will be in five or in ten years time, it will be almost the same. When I have a family, it will be a pleasant spring day and me and my husband and my baby will go for a walk in a park :) This ordinary and calm day will remain in my memory as the happiest one. Ваша главная мотивация в жизни? Для меня самая большая мотивация в жизни - это желание. Я верю, что если о чем-то мечтать, то это обязательно сбудется. Но при этом надо трудиться, чтобы добиться своего. Для этого существует множество методов, один из них составить конкретные планы. Если мы назначаем конечную дату нашего желания, то оно становится нашей целью, и если мы разрежем нашу цель на куски, то они будут нашими планами. Остается только их выполнять. Ваша главная мотивация в жизни? Украина стала для меня второй родиной после того, как я прожила и проучилась здесь 5 лет. Не только мои преподаватели и старые друзья, но и все коллеги по SEUC встречали меня тепло и доброжелательно. Очень приятно с Вами познакомиться! :) Опишите ваш идеальный день (выходной, отпуск, др.). Каждый новый день для меня чем-то примечателен! И если представить его, то он будет примерно таким же и через 5 или 10, когда у меня будет семья, в один прекрасный весенний день я пойду прогуляться со своим любимым мужем и малышом в парк :) Такой обычный, спокойный день будет остаться в моей памяти, как самый счастливый.
