2 EROSION Crematorium & Columbarium

EROSION

Located along Montrose Boulevard and close to the University of St. Thomas, the simplicity of Erosion allows for a subtle yet elegant existence in the middle of Houston. This crematorium is built with a steel frame and sandstone. Its name - Erosion - represents the tactile properties of sandstone with the ever-changing state of life. As our lives speed through us, it is necessary to take a minute to ground ourselves and ponder impermanence.

UNDER THE PALM TREES

The Forgotten Whispers in the Grains of Sand

3

Located along the East Sea in Da Nang, Viet Nam, “Under the Palm Trees” is a memorial masque for the forgotten dead during the French Colonialism period and First Indochina War in Vietnam—four zones with opened entrances and exits leading visitors throughout the journey. Numerous sand tubes with various heights growing on the shore’s sand, creating multiple shapes and walls interlacing under the Coconut Palm trees—a plant symbolizing Central Coastal Vietnam and the Mekong Delta.

“Rubber and Rice” is the memorial for the plantation workers who were called “coolies” by the French. The laborers worked without breaks, food, and water and died from malnutrition, dysentery, and malaria. The Michelin-owned rubber plantation recorded 17,000 deaths in 20 years.

“Solarium” includes various sculptures to memorize the people tortured and exposed to the sun until death by French colonialism in the Con Dao archipelago in Southeast Viet Nam.

“My Trach River” is covered by transparent cloth to memorize innocent citizens who died by machine guns during the My Trach Massacre, surrounded by inscribed poems on the sand tubes.

And colored sand tubes represent advanced, Western ideas like a “Kaleidoscope” where visitors can walk on the Monkey Bridge on top of numerous Nón Lá - the symbol of Vietnamese Conical Hats for people sacrificed during the French Colonialism period in Viet Nam.

Amidst the jungles and rice fields, Where the scent of the coconut palms hangs, Once stood a land of traditions, The country that deserves the peace.

The French then came with force and fire, With eyes on conquest lands and life, Their cannons echoed through the night, With their cultures, food, wine, the new delights. But underneath, the wounds ran deep, Guns and bombs, the pain of loss, The colony, the cost of war, The scars of sounds, the violence and oppression, Of a people broken and torn.

The legacy of that time, Lingers on, a bitter stain, Reminds of the past that haunts us, And the need for healing, again and again, In the end, at what cost, to whom, and what right?
