In this unit we’ll get a closer look to the use of comparatives & superlatives
According to the adjective we need to apply certain changes to create the sentence.
Here we can see how we can transform the short adjective into a comparative adjective adding –er to the adjective.
Short Adjective Adjective+ er + than
John is
taller than
Peter
River Nile is
longer than
Amazon River
John is
shorter than
Louis
Here we can see how we can transform the short adjective into a comparative adjective by doubling the final consonant and adding –er to the adjective. Short Adjective ending in CVC Adjective+ er + than (keep in mind we double the last consonant)
Russia is
bigger than
Canada
California is
hotter than
Nevada
A needle is
thinner than
an eraser
Here we can see how to create a comparative sentence using a long adjective. For this case, we use more, the adjective and than. Long adjectives more+ adjective + than
Brayan is
more intelligent than
George
Chinese is
more difficult than

Dancing is
more exciting than
watching a movie
Here we can see how to create a comparative sentence using an adjective ending in final “Y”. In this case we delete the final “Y” and add “ier” to the adjective. Long adjectives Adjectives ending in “Y” more+ adjective + than Adjective +ier + than (remember to drop the “Y”)

drier than
forests
Turtles are
lazier than
lions
Finally, there are some “irregular� adjectives to which we can not predict the way the change, so we have to memorize their comparative form Irregular adjectives Good-Better Bad- worse Far- farther Mercury is
