THE OPENING WHISTLE TO A GREAT CHAMPIONSHIP With an amazing display of colours, the opening ceremony of the 12th European Universities Football Championship filled the city of Porto with youthful energy and incredible joy. Yesterday night was a night to remember. Fado, a tradicional portuguese genre, engaged all and brought a sense of belonging to everyone. The athletes were not foreigns and didn’t feel like it. In fact, all the official representatives reinforced the same message: we are all equal, we are all the same. In that moment, there were no winners or losers. The best song was the sound of Fair Play. A commitment to playing fair and respecting the opponents in the field remains in the air. As the players stood side by side on stage, the teams showed a true sense of union, which is what EUSA is all about. The ceremony represented the initial whistle for all athletes and for the tournament’s Organising Committee. Although the flags had different colours, everyone was on the same team for the entire evening and the companionship was contagious.

FLASH INTERVIEWS As every year I expect to improve the level of the championship and the organizing comitee to be more successful. I hope that all the participants enjoy their stay in Porto. At the same time I expect we can see during the week very strong teams and I believe that they are working like professionals. So I invite not only the students but all the people to go to the pitches to see this university teams.

Antonis Petrou EUSA Representative

Our expectations are really high. We have the biggest number of participants ever in a Sports University event in Porto so we are really confident that this will be a great competition. Until now, the preparation was really good and we hope it goes even better everyday till the end of the competition. I think that sports unite people, unite the differences between them because it’s a common point that they don’t have the same reality. It’s a way to bring everyone to the same place because of an event.

Nuno Loureiro Secretary General

It’s a sport that I like and I’m working on an area that I love: multimedia. The tournament has an amazing communication office and the athletes are all excited with this European Championship. Portugal won last year, so I have high expectations for the Portuguese teams and for the Portuguese Organising Committee. We now have the responsibility of being a good host. I volunteered to show my work and to help dignify this championship, so I hope I can contribute enough.
