Summer sales 2011: Prices slashed By Michel Wahba
WHILE most communities in Spain launch their summer sales on Sunday, shops in Madrid and Valencia have already started slashing prices. Vivid ‘Rebajas’ signs have already crowded retailers’ shop fronts, competing to cut their prices by 20, 50 and up to 70 per cent. In spite of the economic uncertainty, the National Confederation of Commerce forecast a 2 to 3 per cent sales increase on last year, while Acotex, the Textiles Trade Association, placed the summer sales results figures at €35 billion, in line with last year. “The economic situation of our country, with a steady fall in consumption since 2006, has made the consumer wait for more and more cuts before making their purchases,” said Acotex President Borja Oria.

Last year, thousands of shoppers stormed the major brand stores, with nine out of 10 Spanish saying they will be buying something during the sales. But the average spending followed a trend of decline, with €50 per person, the FUCI consumer group reported. However, this summer, shoppers in the Community of Madrid said they will be spending €75, €15 up from last year. Several Spanish brands including Zara, Blanco, Sfera, Desigual, and Bimba & Lola are expanding their summer sales to their online stores, trending the PreRebajas special discounts for VIP customers, whom they communicate with via email and social networking, promising a queue-free and exclusive shopping experience. In Andalucia, Balearics and Murcia, the sales bonanza will officially kick off on Sunday.
