Flag appeal FUENGIROLA is set to appeal against the removal of blue flag status from three beaches. Mayor Ana Mula said the decision was taken for bureaucratic reasons and nothing to do with the ‘excellent’ quality of the Los Boliches-Gaviotas, Fuengirola and Castillo beaches. The removal of the status follows works on the beaches which included making them better for disabled bathers.

Cruise docks A CRUISE ship equipped with a submarine for its passengers docked in Malag a C ity o n S u n d ay with about 90 people on board. The Crystal Esprit ‘boutique yacht,’ which measures 82.2 metres long and 14 metres wide at the beam, docked after crossing the Atlantic from the Caribbean. Malaga City is its first stop on an eightday Western Mediterranean cruise.

Council closes slide By Joe Gerrard ESTEPONA’S council has closed a new ‘urban slide’ a day after it opened due to safety concerns following some injuries. Red and white tape has been wrapped around the 38-metre-long slide to stop people from riding it after opening last Thursday and closed a day later. Several people reported injuries after using the slide, with one woman sharing a picture of grazed elbows on social media. One video

also showed a rider flying off the end. Estepona Council said in a statement it had ordered the company which built the slide to review its safety. The slide has a gradient which varies between 32 and 34 degrees and links Calle Reina Sofia to Calle Eslovaquia. It is the longest of its kind in Spain. It has become the subject of jokes and memes online and has even spawned a parody Twitter account with the description: ‘I don’t like people very much.’

‘Mafia’ drugs bust NATIONAL POLICE and Guardia Civil officers have arrested 44 people in connection with alleged mafia-sponsored drugs trafficking in Malaga and Cadiz provinces. Officers accuse one suspect of leading the smuggling oper-
