A MAN who fathered a child with a prison warden while serving time in the UK has been sentenced to two years in jail for stabbing three Brits in Magaluf. Portuguese-born Nelson Delgado, 27, knifed the victims at a bar in Punta Ballena on Halloween night, 2013, and was facing 12 years in prison. Palma court has sentenced him to two years and two months after he admitted to charges at trial. He was also ordered to pay €40,000 to his victims. One of them was left with mobility problems after being stabbed in the stomach, armpit, back and wrists with a seven-centimetre knife. Delgado, who grew up in Britain, mistook the victims for people who had assaulted his brother earlier. Two other Brits accused of stabbing Delgado’s brother, including one tried last month for belonging to a drugs trafficking gang, were acquitted after the victim admitted he was not sure who had attacked him. Delgado was locked up at Aylesbury

Queen Sofia’s long Mallorca holidays SHE is always the first to arrive on the island By Steve Walsh QUEEN Sofia has extended her summer holidays at the Marivent Palace in Mallorca. She is always the first to arrive on the island and has been seen alone and with the rest of the Royal Family this summer. She has remained in Mallorca this year for the inauguration of the headquarters for Proyecto Hombre Baleares. This is an organisation which has been working for 28 years to help people get out of drug use and back into society and which has always been close to her heart. She met with the President, Tomeu Catala and then uncovered a mural which thanks everyone who has helped to make the facilities open and for their contribution.

Real Madrid boss relaxes in luxury REAL MADRID President Florentino Perez has been relaxing in Mallorca aboard his luxury yacht. Following a busy few months, Perez is visiting the island and enjoying his yacht, the Pitina III, which cost him €18 million 10 years ago and is named after his late wife. It is based in Puerto Portals and is even more luxurious than the one owned by the boss of fashion chain Inditex, Amancio Ortega, one of the richest men in the world according to the Forbes list.

It is moored amongst other millionaires’ yachts and is not used frequently. Nor does Perez tend to invite people to use it when he is not on board. It was used most before the death of his wife in 2012 and mainly between 2003 and 2007 when Jaume Matas was the regional President. Perez is also President of construction group ACS which carried out almost 20 per cent of public works under Matas, making more than €200 million in four years.

Ancient documents left unprotected on the floor NO proper light, humidity or temperature conditions By Staff Reporter THE new team in office in Llucmajor Council has requested help from Mallorca Provincial Government to restore the local archives which are reportedly in a sorry state. There are 15th and 16th century documents piled up without protection and other texts of great historical value in boxes on the floor in danger of getting damp. The mayor, Jaume Tomas, and councillor for Culture, Adelina Gutierrez, showed the archives, which were on the top floor of the town hall with no proper light, humidity or temperature conditions, to the press. The aim is to move it to the Sant Bonaventura Cloister.

SORRY STATE: The local archives were piled up with no protection.

Sales fall in Palma Beach BUSINESSES in Palma Beach complain that sales are down this summer, in some cases by as much as 40 per cent. According to a survey carried out by the Acotur association amongst 80 establishments in the main streets, 60 per cent of business owners say this summer has been worse

than last and the remaining 40 per cent say it is just as bad. The worst affected are restaurants and luxury boutiques, which have seen losses of between 30 and 40 per cent, while gift shops and supermarkets claim to have seen between 20 and 35 per cent less business.

They say that there are a lot of people about, but that they are not spending and blame this on the fact that many of the tourists come on all-inclusive package tours. This is an option which is on the increase and which they say is bad for the area and for businesses.

Ex-policeman is now behind bars A RETIRED Local Police officer from Palma charged with extortion has been remanded in prison. He had been released on bail

of €30,000 in January and since then, witnesses in the case investigating police corruption in Calvia and Palma Beach claim that he has been extorting and coercing them. He refused to give a statement to the police or testify before a judge. He allegedly intimidated clients of the clubs in which the owners refused to hire the services of his wife’s upholstering business. He demanded the clients’ ID and forced many of them outside claiming they were minors, putting them off returning to the bars and nightclubs.

Tortoises perish in two fires AT least 100 protected Mediterranean tortoises have perished in two fires at Son Doblons in Petra according to the Environmental Department. Members of the Environmental Department and the Consortium for the Recovery of the Balearic Islands’ Fauna (COFIB) have inspected 43 hectares destroyed in the fires which were started intentionally on August 9 and 13. This figure is based on the number of tortoises found dead, according to the General Department for Natural Areas and Biodiversity, but the number could be higher because in summer during the hottest hours of the day, which is when the fires occurred, the tortoises remain underground, in rabbit warrens or under stones.

Support for decision to shut lounge THE Association for the Revitalization of Historical Centres (ARCA) and the opposition in Palma Council support the closure of the chill-out lounge at Sant Carles fortress. The conservative Partido Popular in the opposition in Palma say it was the correct thing to do, while ARCA says it proves that the Urban Planning Department defends the city’s heritage and ensures things are done legally. The establishment, located in a fortress which is an Asset of Cultural Interest, had no opening licence or building permit. The councillor for City Planning said although it had a licence from the Port Authorities, as it is not used for maritime activities, it also needs authorisation from the city hall. not knowing they are being recorded. The extortionists then threaten to upload the video to YouTube if they don’t get money. At least 20 complaints involving internet fraud are received every day.

Costa Women connect, inspire and support Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports. Ali helps others achieve what they think is impossible. ALI MEEHAN came to Spain in 2002 after realising that she had much more adventure and passion in her soul to do more both personally, and also for others. She had already met her future husband, Patrick back in the UK at a friend’s party, and as Patrick was working in Spain, Ali decided to move her office here and join him. She was working for Business Development Consultancy in the Middle East, so it allowed her to be flexible on where she lived. As she and Patrick moved around the globe with their work, Ali would mainly be operating from her home via internet, until her work found her living and working in the Middle East in 2004. By this time, she knew what it felt like to uproot and start again in a strange country. This experience was to play a large part in what she has achieved today. Ali and Patrick returned to Spain and married in Mijas in 2009. However it was not long before they uprooted again to live for another eight months in Thailand, which was also a massive business learning curve for her. Ali calls herself ‘a serial expat’ as she has travelled and lived far and wide, but she still calls Spain her home. By 2010 she was back here once more and this was the year that Costa Women was born. Ali had realised during her travels that there were women living all over the world with a need to connect with others, or confidence boosting and support in order to move forward in their lives. Her ethos was simple, to connect, inspire, enable and support, which is how the Costa Women organisation operates today. Ali had already put a website in place just before she left Thailand.

The idea was to start the group in Spain for women who had relocated here needing help and support. Costa Women offers monthly gatherings and events to network and expand skills and knowledge between its members as well as jobs, classifieds and a space for blogging. It wasn’t long before the membership rapidly grew; within one month Ali had attracted a following from as far as Barcelona. Today the Costa Women boast 4,000+ members with meet ups in 17 different locations and 57 different nationalities including Spanish and Russia. With this immense unity, Costa Women have raised thousands for many beneficiaries. bers to Costa Women so that we can do even more. I believe that you can do anything when you put your mind to it. There are so many women that think that their goals are impossible, but in most cases

they are achievable” When talking to Ali you realise she has done exactly that, achieved, and is continuing to help others achieve with the same frame of mind. It is hard to believe such a softly spoken and gentle person such as Ali carries such strength and determination inside. And thank goodness she does as this strength has changed the attitudes of women everywhere. Now many women enjoy the coffee mornings, social and business group meetings, International Women’s Day events and all other events where united they can raise funds for others in need. I asked Ali has she anything that she would have done differently and she replied “I named the group ‘Costa Women,’ and now we have overgrown from the Costa into so many other places across Spain and the Islands.” I also asked her where she will be in five years time. “Out of all the countries I have lived in, I still love Spain the best. I want to give much more back to the Spanish community as well as expats, I love my work here, and right now is the best time of my life.” Her uplifting attitude to life is what drives her on to get the results she desires. Ali, as a Costa Woman, possesses a wonderful and winning formula.

They are a man, his son and a niece who are members of the ‘Bustamantes’ gypsy clan. They were involved in an incident in s’Arenal when some French tourists approached them and others to play a shell game. When one tourist took out a €50 note, it was allegedly snatched from him by a woman. The tourists ran after her but when they caught her, she shouted for help, attracting her relatives, who threatened the group. The tourists took refuge in the kitchen of a bar in Llucmajor and called the Local Police. The officers prevented them from being attacked and took them to the station to make a complaint before accompanying them back to their hotel. Members of the gang also shouted death threats to the police. The gypsies, however, claim the woman was attacked and the police are harassing them.

DAY AFTER PILL: There are no informative pamphlets available.

No information on ‘morning after’ pill SITUATION reported to Health Department By Steve Walsh THE Balearic Institute for Family Policies (IPFB) has complained that there are no pamphlets with information about the ‘day after’ pill in the region’s pharmacies.

They have demanded that the pamphlets be distributed immediately, as otherwise it could affect the health of Balearic women and girls. The situation has been reported to the Health Department, the Office for the De-

fence of Rights of Minors and the Balearic Women’s Institute. The IPFB complains that some women are buying the pill before they have intercourse in readiness to take it afterwards.

THREE foreigners were arrested by National Police in Mallorca for different serious crimes and are due to be deported. The men, from Colombia, Ecuador and Morocco, had extensive criminal records and all had previous sentences for robbery, drug trafficking and causing bodily harm. Despite them having valid residence permits, as they all had sentences against them which could not be appealed, an order for the deportation was processed with the Foreign-

Tanker lorries deliver water in Montuiri WATER shortage due to wells drying up in past few years By Steve Walsh MONTUIRI Town Hall has had to bring in tanker lorries to deal with the water supply problems. According to the council and the suppliers for the Pla Community of Municipalities, Hidrobal, this is due to the fact that wells have been drying up over the past few years while demand has increased. It is hoped the situation will improve in the winter, as a new well built recently on the road to San Joan has not solved the problem, according to the mayor, Joan Verger. It doesn’t have the required electric supply, isn’t connected to the town’s drinking water supply pipes and does not provide the promised amount of water. The town hall is planning a campaign to raise awareness amongst locals of the importance of using water responsibly.

The thick smoke led several people to be treated for smoke inhalation, including a policeman who went into the building to save a seven-year-old boy who was in a fifth-floor

apartment alone. He smashed the door down, and sustained injuries to his elbows and knees. Most casualties were treated by paramedics in ambulances on the scene although some were taken to hospital. Inflammable liquid was used to set fires in several parts of the apartment, which was gutted by the fire, but the rest of the building was not affected and residents were soon able to return home. The street was closed to traffic and an investigation was launched which revealed there had been a heated argument just before the fire.

Antisocial behaviour in Marratxi will be punished MARRATXI Town Hall is planning to take action against antisocial behaviour amongst locals. Since the new team came into office, they opened channels of communication on the website and social networking sites so that locals could make complaints and suggestions.

Most of the complaints have been regarding salubriousness in the town and antisocial behaviour of those who fail to pick up their pets’ waste, as this damages the image of the town. A campaign will be carried out to raise awareness about the costs their behaviour has for everyone and the fines which they may face.

The town has a waste collection and treatment plant opposite the Muntanya Health Centre on the industrial estate, a free service for locals. The mayor, Joan Francesc Canyelles, visited the facilities accompanied by local councillors and learned more about how the service is provided.

Unhappy threewheelers THE rickshaws seen on Palma Beach have ceased to operate following new rules issued by the city hall. They mainly complain that they are no longer allowed to pick up passengers at any point along the route, as the council has created designated stops, and the fact that they can only run between 8am and 5pm, instead of 8am to midnight as they did before. They are awaiting a response from the city hall regarding their appeal against the new conditions. According to taxi drivers in the area, the discontented rickshaw drivers had recently become violent towards them. On one occasion, they allegedly stopped a female taxi driver, shook her car, opened all the doors and insulted her.

Mayor gives villa ultimatum THE mayor of Pollença gave a businessman 48 hours to leave his luxury villa in Formentor urbanisation before electricity and water supply was cut off. A local resident had complained that the villa was being occupied illegally as he says it has no building permit, because it was annulled by the Balearic High Court of Justice in December last year. The man had already complained of the impact the villa had on the area and a demolition order was issued. He also reported the water and electricity companies for providing their services to the villa despite the fact that it has no first occupation licence. The man’s lawyer said he would appeal the order as the case was currently being handled in court.

If jobs are scarce bilingual children can bank on a brighter future BEING able to go back and forth between languages is a kind of brain training, pushing your brain to be flexible

Loose change Jane Plunkett A look at finance for females jane.plunkett@euroweeklynews.com

BILINGUALS get all the perks. Better job prospects, higher salaries, a cognitive boost and even protection against dementia. A lot of research has been done on the bilingual mind and it seems that going back and forth between languages is a kind of brain training, pushing your brain to be flexible. Just as regular exercise gives your body some biological benefits, mentally controlling two or more languages gives your brain cognitive benefits. So as expatriates living here in Spain it really does pay off to raise children in a bilingual environment from the moment they are born. The mental flexibility of being able to jump from one language to another pays off big time in the future, and especially when looking for a job.

Less time to pay COINCIDENTALLY now the government has amended its policy on tax for solar generated electricity for homes, the Spanish electricity companies have decided to reduce time limits for disconnection of late payers.

Anti-mosquito shirts ALTHOUGH there is some other clothing in the world market, a Spanish company, STINGBye has developed a range of anti-mosquito shirts which it currently sells through pharmacies within Spain and hopes to export to other countries in the near future.

Film tax relief THE British government has set up a new department in Manchester to deal with the corporation tax affairs of companies which are eligible for Film Tax Relief. Provided films have a spend within the UK of no less than 10 per cent and can pass a cultural test, producers can claim up to 25 per cent tax relief.

According to experts, the reasons why being bilingual is so rewarding are numerous. Bilinguals are better at multi-tasking. Apparently

children who grow up learning to speak two languages are better at switching between tasks than children who speak only one language.

Bilingualism makes you more open-minded and sensitive to others. Bilinguals have an enhanced awareness of other people’s points of view, born from their deeper understanding, from an early age, that some people have a different perspective. This, according to the Financial Times probably makes bilinguals better managers. Another study found bilingualism enhances your listening ability. It showed that in a noisy environment bilinguals are better at detecting the different sounds, therefore enhancing attention, which in turn is a valuable workplace quality. Bilingual children are noted to score high in tests and exams due to advanced thinking skills, while bilingualism also offers children a direct path to live and work abroad, and perhaps even easily pick up a third language in the future. A study from the US also shows that significantly higher salaries are paid to bilingual speakers than monolingual speakers! So where jobs are scarce, ensuring that our children are proficient in a second language, also ensures a more financially stable future.

Gibraltar decides not to charge IVA on any sales in the territory AS Gibraltar is not part of the EU Customs Union, even though it is a member of the EU through Britain, it has decided not to charge IVA (VAT) on any sale made within the territory. Clearly this is very beneficial to local inhabitants and visitors. This decision also makes it attractive for certain businesses which become domiciled on the Rock. Anyone who purchases goods in Spain which are then transferred to Gibraltar is entitled to reclaim the IVA in full from the Spanish authorities and this is important for larger purchases where a Gibraltar import duty may be levied. Conversely, however, if an item is purchased and consumed in Spain by a Gibraltar resident or company, IVA must be charged by the Spanish seller and cannot be reclaimed. If you go to the theatre in Spain for example, then the point where the tax is charged remains in Spain.

THE ROCK: The decision is beneficial to local inhabitants and visitors.

Investigation continues THE Spanish National Securities Market Commission has revealed that a police economic crimes unit is investigating the matter of the revocation of certain licences to trade on the stock market. It has been alleged in the media that corruption may have been involved in the granting of these licences but the investigation is in its early stages.

Police tweet SPANISH police have taken the unusual action of issuing a tweet warning consumers messages received through WhatsApp and SMS offering Mercadona vouchers are fraudulent. The message invites consumers to participate in a survey and takes them to a premium service which also demands personal information in order for the ‘prizes’ to be issued. Naturally a spokesperson for Mercadona has confirmed the company is not in any way associated with the fraud and everyone should dump unopened - these messages.

I WARNED my friend but she was adamant, she could trust her instincts. A Russian language copy-writer translator, her client owed her €180 which was now overdue. He wanted more work done, would she oblige. My friend is an obliging lady and soon the €180 became €340. Her faith in her client was to her credit but the overdue invoice was to his credit. It still is. This week she received an email. His business is experiencing cash-flow difficulties. It may be some time before he is in a position to settle the bill. Those with clout no doubt; the utilities and essential suppliers will be paid. My friend, a single mum, has no clout whatsoever. She isn’t alone of course. It is this small business sector that bears the brunt of lost settlements. Faced by hot competition payment upfront is out of the question. The same applies if credit limits are applied. If clients default they simply

An outstanding auto-mechanic was honest in his appraisal. Her R/H drive clapped out car was worth only say €300. The cost of getting it through the ITV would be €850. It was a no-brainer.

She then said the car was worth more to her and begged him to work on it. Shrugging, he got on with it. He then called her expecting to hear pearls dropping from her mouth. She had decided that she didn’t want the car after all; he could have it. Anyone want to buy a clapped out Clio that just squeaked

OTHERS THINK IT ARAB spring? Ha! The actions of Bush and Blair have turned the Middle East into a winter that could last for centuries. These two despots, in their headlong flight to seize the oil wealth of desert lands under the guise of freeing their citizens from oppression, have managed to upset a delicate balance that has endured for thousands of years. The inhabitants of these Mid-East countries were simply not ready for so called independence. The Arab calendar is in the 14th century. If you look back to 14th century Europe you will find it ruled by the Monarchy, feudal aristocrats and religious zealots. Sound familiar? These early leaders ruled by fear and strength, many of whom committed atrocities far beyond those carried out by the likes of ISIS. Because the majority of Europe’s inhabitants were basically simple peasants, this method of control actually worked and be-

neath the savage glitter of feudal Europe, countries traded and prospered. There were of course wars and uprisings, the strongest and fittest survived and subsequently con-

tinued to maintain the status quo. Well Blair and Bush’s maraud into the Middle East changed all that. We are now reaping the harvest. We see hundreds of

thousands of migrants assailing our borders; people who were probably perfectly happy carrying out their daily lives under the strict regimes of Hussein and Gadhafi. We are experiencing acts of unspeakable terror at home. Thousands of our troops have been maimed and killed, and the Middle East is in complete turmoil. As to the Chilcot enquiry, if ever I saw a conspiracy to protect the rears of the guilty this is it. As far as I’m concerned they are all in it up to their old pal eyeballs. A series of very simple questions should have resolved this years ago. With a bit of justice, Blair should have already been behind bars for some time. Question. ‘Mr Blair. Who told you Hussein had weapons of destruction that could be launched in 45 minutes’? Answer. ‘Fred Flange.’ Question. ‘Mr Flange. Who told you Hussein had… etc. etc.’? Brace! Brace! Conflict ahead

OUR VIEW Shoreham Airshow 2013

PEOPLES of the West are being conditioned to accept war Mike Walsh Mike, based in Mediterranean Spain, is an international journalist, author and professional writer.

AS the US - NATO squares up to modern Russia, pouring servicemen and arms on to European lands, the main battlefields, (in the event of war) would undoubtedly be on European soil. Situated on a geopolitical fault line, similar to that of 1914/1940 France and Belgium, much of Europe could soon resemble Hiroshima circa 1945. Conflicts have nothing to do with idealism or defence. I believe all wars are trade wars financed by bankers; wars are profitable. Britain’s wartime premier conceded as much when, in Bern, 1960, he expressed himself with candour: ‘Germany’s unforgivable crime was its attempt to loosen its economy out of the world trade system and to build up an own exchange system from which the world finance couldn’t profit anymore.’ Nations that tried to duck the petrodollar system met a similar fate; Iraq, Syria and Libya. Today, the nation following the Reich example is the Russian Reich. Action replay: Russia,

AIRSHOW: A disaster.

Extremely dangerous

NO-WIN SITUATION: War to save the dollar or economic collapse? its popular leader in particular, is being demonised. The peoples of the West are being conditioned to accept war ‘to protect the world for democracy.’ Of this democratic process the unelected and unelectable Winston Churchill was contemptuous: ‘The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.’ Most now use the internet as their in-

formation highway. There are no longer frontiers between peoples, mainstream media now has competition and no longer is in a position to condition people for war. My earlier warnings are in keeping with those of an emerging erudite body of world opinion. It gives me no comfort to say prophecies that once brought scorn are now accepted as reality. The US is no longer the only world

power; yesterday’s empire, economists warn of a cataclysmic collapse of the US dollar during late September or early October. Europe faces a no-win situation; war to save the dollar or economic collapse? In the event of either it is estimated one billion people will experience unimaginable consequences. See, you’re better than one in a million; you are now one in a billion.

Keep on smiling regardless IT takes no effort to be polite and courteous to all of those that we meet Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-thewall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

I KNOW we are a dwindling breed, but opening doors for ladies, giving up our seats on public transport and walking on the outside when accompanying a member of the opposite sex down the street - are all still as natural as breathing to many men of my generation. I would probably even tip my hat if I wore one. After all it’s not quantum physics, and it takes no effort to be polite and courteous to all of those that we meet, and persevering even when faced with a dark uncomprehending stare. And what an improved world we would live in if we always smiled and perhaps greeted passing strangers with a Good Morning or Buenos Dias. I would like to think that repeated efforts would reap rewards in the long run and it’s a sour mannered, bad assed individual indeed, who can hold out against such a determined assault. But it is dispiriting when a door is held for a lady and she simply barges through without a thank you, a nod, or a kiss my derrière - an occurrence that happens with depressing regularity here in

OPENING DOORS: Is still a natural action for men of my generation. Spain. Manners are a two way thoroughfare and appreciation from the recipient is a heart warming incentive to go on carrying out these simple but important observances. Why standards have plunged over the last two generations is beyond me. Perhaps it’s a cyclical thing - a passing phase - and as has so often happened in other areas throughout history, perhaps there will be a resurgence in the other direction at

THE terrible disaster at Shoreham airshow on August 22 killed at least 11 people and injured many others. While accidents of any sort can happen all too easily, this was not the first one to happen at Shoreham and the pilot of a World War II Hurricane airplane died in 2007 after crashing at the same show. Another airshow crash took place in Switzerland the day after Shoreham, killing a pilot whose plane crashed into a barn next to a home. Clearly then, air show stunts can be extremely dangerous. The UK claims to have some of the strictest regulations governing flying, yet despite those regulations different rules apply to air shows with some planes able to fly as near as 50 metres to the crowd. Also, the location of some air shows to major roads means that aerobatic manoeuvres can take place over busy, builtup areas. In the last five years there have been at least seven incidents at UK air shows, with four pilots killed as a result, and while neither spectators nor the public were victims of these accidents, steps need to be taken to prevent further tragedies. In the light of the terrible events at Shoreham and those incidents since 2010, wouldn’t it make sense to make a no-fly zone over busy areas to prevent such horror happening again?

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Colleagues are far from helpful at the moment and you may even feel that matters are going backwards. It may be necessary to move away and leave them to haggle among themselves. Perhaps later you may step in and take control of the confusion. If your business life is far from good then it is more than balanced by harmony at home.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) There will be good news regarding an application or legal document. Following on from that your finances take a turn for the better and this could be long term. Having extra cash is great, but be wary of someone who would like to part you from it. At the weekend, events take a romantic turn but timing may be bad owing to other commitments.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Cast your net wide this week and be prepared to take advantage of a state of freedom. With high energy and an expansive mind, you are in a good position. Avoid being thrown out of kilter by activities around you. It may be difficult to make real progress at times but that does not mean you are unable to plan.

PISCES (February 20 - March 20) As the moon shines on you, it is almost possible to feel the light. After a few recent hiccups it is now possible to get down to achieving your heart's desire. Whether that is what you will want at the end of the day is neither here nor there. What matters most to your wellbeing now is to see some results.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) There is a lot going on and sometimes you need to take a step back. A feeling that you have covered some ground before is not unfounded. However, there are certain aspects of your life which need to be revisited. Only in this way are you able to see the real progress that has been made.

one some time ago is now acceptable and there could be some excitement. Rather than setting down hard-andfast plans, it may be better to be flexible.

LOTTERY

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) The usually flamboyant attitude which is yours at this time of the year is now subdued, but this will not last for too much longer and soon things will be back to normal. You will be looking to spice up your romantic life and your partner will be only too willing to go along with your suggestions.

Nastiness could have been avoided with a little humanity LIKE many others I am sure, this whole story in the Almeria edition last week, of the lost cat and dog held hostage would make me quite determined to avoid using such an establishment as these kennels in the future because of the arrogant attitude of the kennel owners. My parents used to run extremely successful boarding kennels in both England and Scotland before they retired, and would NEVER have asked for payment for any animal which had gone missing whilst under their care. It really is irrelevant to the poor elderly owner if there was a break-in, or a whether it was a case of the cat making a dash for it. She has lost her beloved pet and you have to do your best to make things a little better, if indeed you can. Things can happen that can’t be helped, but if the business is so terribly legal (as almost insisted upon), then why is there no insurance to cover such possibilities? The majority of kennels in the area are very strict about all vaccinations being up to date, and hold the animal passports as proof should an inspection take place. Don’t please, blame the owner if you fail to do this. As for the dog being held hostage thus running up an enormous bill, this was quite unfeeling, and in my opinion only a very bad business person would demand such a thing. All of this nastiness could have been avoided with a little humanity and common sense. ‘Josephine’ (SORBAS) By email

Beach hazard I AM writing to express my increasing concern over a major public health hazard. I live close to Playa Linda in Benajarafe, where we have a problem with unauthorised Beach camping. Every weekend throughout the long summer period several large families camp overnight on our local beach. There are absolutely no toilet facilities on this beach apart from those in two bars, which are ‘client only,’ and closed overnight. The police are a regular presence, but chose to ignore this illegal activity, as do the beach cleaners who pick up

I SEE in the headlines, that now is the time that it’s hardest to manage to get by on our money: Answer... Don’t spend so much. Easy for me to say as i am a pensioner, ‘the Lucky’ generation. Let’s make some comparisons between ‘the Lucky’ generation and today’s: Take the home we live in, compare the luxury furnishings and electrical appliances to those of ‘the Lucky’ generation. Today we have a 50 inch TV, music systems, wall to wall carpets, and central heating. In the kitchen, wow, you have to be a technical genius to boil a kettle. OK, no kettle, it comes out of the tap boiling. In the garage: A modern up-to-date car. Now let’s take a look at ‘the Lucky’ generation. The home was small, believe me it was cramped. The luxury furnishings, lino, you’ve probably never heard of it? It was usually an ugly brown, furniture was as it came, one design, take it or leave it, Colour? Yes you’ve guessed, brown. Music system: A two valve radio. TV, yes we had TV; second hand for £5. The kitchen was a delight, a very old gas cooker, that’s it. We only had cold water, if you wanted a bath, lots of kettles and sit in front of the fire in the front room. Our lighting was a gas mantle that used to give very little light. Only one jacket and trousers. So to the point: EASY, DON’T SPEND SO MUCH MONEY. Clive Graham, By email daily along this stretch. I have concerns with public health, as at the back of the beach in the vegetation there is a huge amount of human excrement, plus the attendant used tissue and also soiled disposable nappies and female sanitary items. This is very unpleasant to encounter when walking both from a visual, and sensual aspect. The smell is appalling. I have no problem with families enjoying the beach in this way but feel the town hall must be made to provide sanitation stations during this time. This beach is very popular and there are hundreds of families using it every weekend to the point it is packed solid. Campers apart, where are these people attending their ‘calls of nature.’ In the 21st century this lack of hy-

giene is unacceptable. Janet Saunders. Benajarafe. Malaga.

I’m ashamed Dear Editor, Re: Leapy’s article Having been out of action for a few days, I only saw Leapy’s article the other day, and it makes me ashamed to be British. As usual, he leaps in with all sorts of nonsense about how the immigrants are abusing our system, which is not true; we English made a pretty good job at that too! I suppose he hasn’t been anywhere near the camps, or the desperate meth-

ods used by those trying to get inside. How does he know what he is saying? He doesn’t! And what would difference would a precious few foreign nationals make. Let’s make a decision, to admit a fair number, along with the French, and stop forgetting our Christian duty to help others, Yours sincerely, William Campbell. Mojacár, by email

Lack of respect Hi Leapy Re: Immigrants I read with interest your article about the immigrants, I have been saying the same thing, what do you

think about the way manners etc. seem to have just disappeared, and I put it down to the general public don’t give a toss attitude. I think for a start that TV should clean its act up, it seems you can’t say ‘the N word’ on the box but you can use every expletive that comes to mind, and most of the time it’s not necessary. I think that camps should be set up to house asylum seekers as per your article, the next would be people that abuse nurses and teachers; there should be a minimum fine of £5,000 with no time to pay, if they can’t pay, two years in prison. The next is the lack of respect that is shown to people in authority, I know that the police have not helped their image, but they are the law and as such should be treated with respect. So I would reintroduce borstals for the joyriders, the burglars and general misfits, and those that don’t know when to keep their mouth shut, and would be run by the military police. Now we get into the drug dealers and pushers. These would be sent to high security camps run by the military police, these people would be fed a daily dose of their preferred drug until they were hooked, then left to dry out with no help. You could even make two years in the army punishment for certain crimes. The problem is the punishment never fits the crime, we need to bring back respect and consideration for other people, and their property. Did you know that in Spain, foul mouthing the police gets you a fine, and if you commit a crime they can put you in prison for years. As a last resort, there is always the cat. Read your piece every week, keep up the good work. Regards Ron Chivers By email

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Improvement to traffic boards AS part of this series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers. SUBTLE improvements have been made to traffic information boards on Spain’s roads by the DGT to indicate delays on the roads. Most motorways have overhead signs to warn of weather conditions and accidents and journey times, and now, alongside these timings for journeys, some of the display panels will also display a clock face. A white clock indicates that traffic is flowing normally, whereas a red clock indicates that there are delays. The aim is to try and provide more information to motorists and therefore encourage safer driving through awareness of problems ahead. Pegasus catches dangerous driver Not everyone drives safely though as the DGT reports that the airborne speed detector, Pegasus, has clocked a Porsche travelling at 218km per hour on the R-4 ring road of Madrid, when the maximum speed allowed is 120km per hour. The footage recorded showed the vehicle to have French licence plates and a child in the back of the car that was not wearing the mandatory seatbelt. Pegasus normally catches speeders who are later informed of their activities and fines but due to the gravity of the offences being committed by the vehicle and the serious risk to road safety, the helicopter

PEGASUS: Airborne speed detector. crew called on ground troops to intercept and stop the vehicle. The driver was a 31-year-old male of Spanish nationality and his son who was in the car, was aged eight. He was arrested at the scene and faces up to a four year driving ban.

Succession Planning For UK Nationals In Spain

It is important for UK nationals who have moved to Spain to review their estate planning. You need to consider the local succession law and succession tax, and how they will affect your family and heirs. UK inheritance tax also remains a factor. Besides the tax aspect, there are some questions that you need to consider. Who are your heirs and how do you want to distribute your estate among them? Do you want them to have control over the money? How soon will they need access to the funds? How much will probate slow things down, can you avoid it for some of your assets? Succession law in Spain is quite different from the UK. It dictates that a certain percentage of an estate must go to certain people. This applies to UK nationals living here, unless they have a will. A new EU legislation from August 2015 now also allows you to opt out of Spanish succession law - but not Spanish succession tax. Spanish succession tax is also very different from the UK’s inheritance tax. Tax is paid by each recipient, rather than by the estate, and

By Peter Worthington, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks there is no blanket exemption between spouses. The rate of succession tax also increases depending on the relationship between you and the beneficiary, ie, whether they are your spouse, children, nephew/niece, friend etc. The tax is due on death when the asset being inherited is located in Spain, or if the recipient is resident in Spain. So if you leave your Spanish property to children who live in the UK, they will pay succession tax on it. If you leave your UK pension fund to your spouse who lives in Spain, they will pay tax on it.

Tax is applied at progressive rates from 0% to 34%. Then multipliers, depending on the beneficiary’s relationship to you and their net worth, can take tax much higher - possibly up to 82%. Under state rules, descendants, ascendants and spouses receive an allowance of €15,956. Relatives like siblings, cousins, nephew and nieces and step-children receive €7,993. Anyone else does not receive an allowance. There is a 95% allowance against the inherited value of the main home of the deceased, but only if a spouse or descendant keeps the property for 10 years. Even then there is a maximum deduction of €122,606 per inheritor. Local autonomous communities can adjust the state rules. In the Balearic Islands, the allowance for spouses, descendants and ascendants is increased to €25,000. The main home relief is 100%, maximum of €180,000,

provided the recipient is a spouse or child and keeps the home for 10 years. UK nationals also remain liable to UK inheritance tax, unless they establish a nonUK domicile. Don’t risk leaving your estate planning too late. At Blevins Franks we aim to make the inheritance process as easy and tax efficient for your heirs as possible. Please contact me for a ‘succession planning health check.’ Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Don’t gamble by skimping on insurance often only the tip of the iceberg. At Globelink, we recently paid over £45,000 to repatriate one of our clients back to the UK following heart surgery in the US! One last thing I must stress: don’t wait until the last minute to book your travel cover, that’s just asking to be caught out. Remember too, that single trip holiday insurance must cover the whole of your return trip, from the date you leave your country of residence to the date you return. Don’t be tempted to book it from a friend’s address in the UK. Declaring you’re a UK resident when you live in Spain, it’s fraud. If you do make a claim, it won’t wash, but you could find yourself in pretty hot water!

David Deverson GLOBELINK INTERNATIONAL Insurance correspondent david@globelink.co.uk

HOLIDAYS are sacred, not least to us Brits, but a recent travel industry survey showed that most of us would sooner economise on gadgets, home improvements or eating out than cut back on our well-earned breaks. We are also taking longer holidays, even if that means cutting back on the number of trips we make. What’s more, we don’t mind splashing out on the extras that help turn a ‘hohum’ holiday into the stuff of memories. Travel companies have woken up to that fact and now let you tailor your trip with special add-ons. A mini-cruise here, a scenic train journey there, and it can soon add up to a sizeable splurge. Whether you’re travelling under your own steam or on a package, the chances are you’ll be paying upfront with more at stake if anything goes wrong. Suppose you’re injured and have to cancel your trip because you’re unfit to travel? What if your flight from Spain is delayed and you miss your connecting flight out of the UK? Or a relative back home falls seriously ill and you

TRAVEL INSURANCE: Don’t be caught out. have to cut your holiday short to be there? It’s human nature to think ‘it won’t happen to me,’ but if it does, you’ll certainly be glad you took out decent travel cover to shield you against the kinds of things that can and do happen out of the blue. Do check your policy to make sure it fits the trip you’re planning, and consider taking out top-up cover if appropriate.

Cancellation costs can be peanuts compared to the head-spinning financial risks involved if you run into health problems without proper cover. People generally underestimate the cost of medical treatment abroad, which has rocketed in recent years. That’s especially true of Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Japan and the US, where hospital stays alone can cost around £2,500 per day. Even then, medical bills are

THE butt, backside, booty, junk in the trunk, glutes, and here is my favourite - “THE DERRIÈRE.” Whatever you choose to call it, we all own one but did you know that it the largest and in my book the most important muscle that you possess? Unfortunately it is also often the most neglected and under used, as many do not understand the complexities of the human body and how it depends heavily on the glutes to provide full structural support to the back, hips and knees. If you thought your bottom was just for sitting on... THINK AGAIN! Keeping your glutes strong through specific lower body exercises will help ward off all sorts of problems, back pain, and knee problems to name a few. Regular runners take note: WEAK GLUTES WILL HINDER YOUR RUNNING PROGRESS if you are not combining a strength training programme with your sessions. I have met many a runner with specific issues hindering their running performance. Once I put a glute/leg training programme in place they found that they were better able to perform their runs without the crucial glute muscles fatiguing, thus not causing other muscles to be over used and avoiding muscle damage and pain.

SLEEPLESS NIGHTS: Most common worry is work.

YOUR DERRIÈRE: Important muscle. Do You Have A Sedentary Job? Even if you regularly go to a gym, your glutes are simply not being activated for the majority of your day. You really need to make a conscious effort to incorporate some specific glute work into your workout programme. Basic Body Weight Exercises For Stronger Glutes • Squats, two x sets 40 reps • Lunges, one x set each 30 reps • Mat - Glute Bridge Single Leg Lifts, one x set each 25 reps • Mat - Single Leg Kick Backs two x sets each 25 reps PS: I see nothing more attractive on a man or woman than a firm rounded toned derrière….

WORRYING can take up to five years of our lives as 86 per cent of Britons described themselves as worriers. Research revealed on average, nearly two hours every day is spent worrying or fretting over something, which

amounts to nearly 13 hours a week, or four years and 11 months across the average adult lifetime of 64 years. According to those questioned in the poll for a herbal remedy company, work was the most common thing peo-

ple worried about, followed by financial concerns and health issues. Relationships, missing a bus or train, appearance and family’s safety were also amongst the top common concerns.

Networking for the ladies on Mallorca returns LACE became a popular forum for women to form connections in a simple yet effective method of networking By Steve Walsh THE inaugural meeting of New LACE will be held at Otto Rosso near Magaluf on September 4 at 1pm. New LACE is a networking event for businesswomen on the island that resurrects its forerunner LACE - The Ladies Alliance of Communication and Enterprise. Susan Worthington set up LACE over 10 years ago. “I wanted to create an opportunity for women to connect and promote the work that they do,” said Sue. LACE became a popular forum for women to form connections in a simple yet effective method of networking. Approximately every six weeks members and guests would be invited to attend a lunch where guest speakers and others promoted their businesses. The first meeting was held in Santa Ponsa Country Club in October 2004 with 23 ladies, and just two years later more than 100 ladies at-

tended the end of year meeting in Bendinat. Members were provided with contact details of those who attended and business connections were made. Over time and due to various factors, the LACE meetings were held less frequently and finally ceased. In October 2014 a lunch to mark the 10th anniversary and bring together many of the ladies who had previously attended meetings was held at Mood Beach. The ladies requested that more meetings be held in 2015. “There is no membership fee to be a part of New LACE and all ladies are welcome,” affirms Sue. “Whether you have a business or charity to promote we all want to spread the word of what we do and enjoy helping each other achieve this.” The cost for the event on September 4 is €15 including a welcome drink and a buffet-style lunch. There is a play room for children. For more information and to register, email: newlace2015@gmail.com. Thus, due to popular

New LACE will be holding its inaugural meeting in September 2015. Everyone is welcome to join this event which will be a buffet-style luncheon with a presentation talk. More details will follow on date, time and venue. The ethos is to share, support and celebrate and members old and new are welcome to come along. We hope that you will join us to be a part of New LACE as we all look to a positive and prosperous future. SUE WORTHINGTON: Set up LACE over 10 years ago. Please like this

Volunteers needed at Real Mallorca home game CAMPAIGN is ongoing, but November will be the main month By Eleanor Hawkins CANCER SUPPORT GROUP is getting together with Ballboys from the UK and organising a campaign to raise awareness regarding male cancers. Real Mallorca has invited them to hand out leaflets at their home game on September 27, and they are looking for male volunteers over the age of 18 to hand out leaflets. Younger males are also welcome if supervised. Women are more aware of the need to check themselves and the symptoms to be aware of when it comes to female cancers, but men are either not aware of the risks or reticent to go to the doctors when

they detect possible symptoms. The idea of Pro-TEST is to make men aware of the risk of prostate and testicular cancer, especially among the younger generations who are often ignorant of the dangers, and to regularly check themselves and know what symptoms to watch for. The campaign is ongoing but November will be the main month, with a day of talks in Spanish and English, where men and women can learn more about the subject. There will also be a fundraising dinner, and Cancer Support Group hopes that local businesses will get involved by handing out leaflets and organising their own fundraising events.

In May, members attended the Mallorca Beach Rugby tournament where they gave out information and made friends with many of the players who were interested in the cause. If you have a business such as a gym, health or sports centre that has a lot of male clients and would like them to come and give a short talk and slide show explaining the campaign, or to have printed information relating to the Pro-TEST campaign to hand out to your clients please contact cancermallorca@gmail.com or phone Rebecca Upton on 722 186 889. PRO-TEST: To make men aware of the risk of prostate and testicular cancer.

Internationally renowned Chopin Music Festival THE Chopin Classical Music Festival, will be held in Valldemossa on Sunday. In 1930, Mallorcan composer Joan Maria Thomas created the Chopin Festival - the first in the world - with the assistance of the Boutroux-Ferrà couple. They offered him a room in the Carthusian Monastery for the Festival’s headquarters. Between 1931 and 1936 this musical enterprise hosted the most significant composers and performers of the early 20th century. In 1983 the Festival was opened to contemporary artists, many of whom were inspired by Chopin’s music or scenery. Important painters, photog-

raphers, sculptors or ceramicists have exhibited their work in the Monastery’s Chapter House and have also designed posters, programmes

and t-shirts for the Festival. Performances start at 10pm. For more information and to view the programme, visit www.festivalchopin.com.

A very unique exhibition CONSISTS of a sculptural ensemble By Steve Walsh UNTIL October 1, the exhibition Glowing Core by German artist Rebecca Horn remains in Plaça de Sa Lontja in Palma. Rebecca Horn, presents a site-specific work that invites us to meditate on the tranquility, inspiration and light brought by Mallorca, an island that the poet and artist visits regularly. It consists of a sculptural ensemble dedicated to Ramon Llull, the Mallorcan philosopher, composed by a central piece, an 18-metre light

sculpture, surrounded by 16 other sculptures. The materials of the installation are very diverse: electronic parts, mirrors, steel, light, prickly pears and sound. All these elements crystallize the message and embody the relationship between time and space that the artist seeks to explore. In particular, prickly pears symbolize the Balearic island and Hayden Chisholm’s music, composed for the opening of this exhibition, reflects the movements of the sculptures.

Shopping for trinkets A NIGHT market will be held tomorrow (Friday) from 5pm to 9pm at Plaça des Calo des Moix at Porto Petro. Trinkets, gifts and fresh produce will be on sale. There will also be a night

SO much depends on how your dog gets on in life. I thought it appropriate to write about ‘Inherited Behaviour’ because all dogs will certainly have inherited behaviour. The behaviour of dogs, like all animals gets inherited via genetic pre-disposition and genetic memory. Genetic pre-disposition towards certain types of behaviour or attitudes in life are inherited at birth, much like the pre-programmed default factory settings you may find on a computer or TV when you buy it new. What they govern are things like a dog’s prevailing temperament, personality and the type of behaviour that comes instinctively to him when faced with different situations or events. As an example everything from how readily he will pursue prey to how confident, fearful or aggressive he will become in more testing situations and

POPPY: Enjoys playing in the swimming pool.

Poppy loves the water INHERITED BEHAVIOUR: How strongly he will attach to people. even how strongly he will emotionally attach to people making later separation issues in people more likely. Genetic memory is a rather different phenomenon. If an animal repeats a specific behaviour enough times, a ‘memory’ of this behaviour eventually get stored in its genes and cells, which is then passed down from one generation to the next. This is how birds know when to migrate or how to build nests without any other bird showing them.

Or how sheepdogs know how to stalk and round up sheep without any other dog showing them. It is purely down to the effects of inherited genetic pre-disposition and memory. The same phenomenon is behind all different, and also far more genetically magnified working instincts found in different breeds of dog. In other words they are born with a certain inherited compulsion to behave in a specific way.

Remember our four legged friends in the summer WHILST so many people think of the sun and vacations during the month of August, there is a real and hidden problem concerning the well-being of domestic animals. Cats and dogs don’t always get remembered during the holidays and sadly many are simply put on the streets as it may be too expensive or too much of a chore to bother about find-

ing accommodation for them. There are of course a number of very willing and dedicated volunteers who are prepared to look after these and other strays either as foster carers for individual animals or in rescue homes. However, many of the officials responsible for catching the animals go on holiday in August which

means the number of strays on the streets increases and some impatient vets simply put the animals to sleep in order to clear their practices before they close down. During this month in particular, rather than buying a pedigree cat or dog, it would be so much more caring to contact one of the rescue centres to adopt one of the strays they have

saved from destruction. There are rescue centres all over the south of Spain: PPP Dogs in Spain Baza Perrera Dogs that needs help Costa Blanca Dog Animals needing homes Costa del Sol Axarqia Online Animal Rescue Valencia Perrera Dogs Valla Verde Animal Rescue

To find a pet-sitter go to www.HousesitMatch.com or call Lamia on +44 (0)1865521508 POPPY the Collie Labrador cross enjoys playing in the pool. She loves water. Even when she was first adopted as a scrawny rescue puppy she would walk around the perimeter sniffing and pawing the water out of nervous curiosity. Now that she is older she dives in without any hesitation. Her owners Jeff and Annie also care for three other rescue dogs but none quite as daring as Poppy. In the summer the whole fur family needs care when Jeff and Annie go on holiday. Kennelling four dogs for several weeks twice a year can add up in costs; it restricts the holiday budget! Recently a friend recommended HouseSitMatch.com an online network for pet and home owners to find sitters to come to their

home. So they planned ahead, registered on the site and created a profile describing all the responsibilities and asking experienced dog sitters to apply to housesit their dogs at home! Within a month they had four applicants and chose someone who had cared for rescue dogs before. Unexpectedly, they chose two Australians who travel the world as international housesitters earning their living as bloggers online. And over three years of full time housesitting they’ve gained a lot of experience with all manner of domestic pets, dogs especially. The sitters cost nothing and cared for the pets in exchange for free accommodation. It’s a fair exchange and an affordable solution for Jeff and Annie.

HOMES GARDEN

Living well from builders buckets NOT only in gardens, but also in small patios and on apartment terraces Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

IN theory, a few vegetables as well as herbs can be grown in pots, but what we normally regard as pots are not very successful, especially in the summer heat of Spanish gardens once temperatures rise above 20 degrees. For the past few weeks, our temperature in the shade hovers around 37 degrees, but vegetables, if watered every other day, are growing well in black builders buckets of 55 centimetres diameter, and of 65 centimetres elsewhere in semishaded corners of the garden. They include red and crinkly green lettuces, rocket, Swiss chard, purslane, carrots, cabbages, cauliflowers, stevia, cumin, horseradish, climbing yard long and butter beans, dwarf beans, tomatoes, nasturtiums for edible leaves, flowers and seed pods, several types of peppers and aubergines, courgettes, onions plus leeks producing seed for autumn sowing. Based on our now 12 years of experimenting with large tub growing along the lines of the concept of a ‘10-tub vegetable garden’ launched in our book

BUILDERS BUCKETS: Work well for small scale vegetable and herb growing. ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ there are many benefits as described below. Twenty one proven benefits: 1. Small space required - You can build up a circle, square, oblong or row in one bucket units of just a quarter of a square metre. 2. High yield per square metre - Close planting works well and you have no unplanted areas and paths to worry about. 3. Speedy harvesting - If you chose vegetables regularly used and co-locate the salad and

ones for steaming for instance daily or twice daily harvesting takes just minutes. 4. Relatively inexpensive - If you hunt around, builders buckets are not expensive and second hand ones can be used if located. 5. Little waste, as number of plants controlled by your space. 6. Co-located salads - all the year round. 7. Accommodate small and expansive plants 8. No space for weeds - if one plants close to give shade

to roots. 9. Easy to use mutual mulching - for instance lettuces around aubergines. 10. Easy soil enrichment just makes good initial soil/compost/manure mixes and top up between crops. 11. Low water wastage - no sideways losses to dry earth. 12. Circular support frames for tomatoes, peppers and beans etc., for strength. 13. Rare insect and fungal attacks - no major area of vulnerable crops.

14. Companion plant - using mutually beneficial herbs and vegetables. 14. Instant filling of gaps to replace cleared crops - just pop in a few new plantlets from local market or garden centre. 15. Of interest - to owners and visitors. 16. Easy to move or reorganise - Nothing too heavy to pull around. 17. Feature or hidden away Part of mine is an island on the drive while other parts are in otherwise under used corners of

the garden. 18. Just grow what you need - Easy for children and the infirm as well as the totally strong and able. 19. Crop rotation possible by rotating between buckets. 21. Can have a floral centre Mine has a tall geranium. Yes this expanded small scale vegetable growing really does work and not only in gardens, but also in small patios and on apartment terraces. © Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com

LOCAL flea markets, boot sales and classifieds ads can help SUMMER may be coming to an end and your thoughts could be turning to autumn colour schemes in the house, but don’t forget that there are other areas of the home that typically get forgotten. Did your bathroom get put to one side last time you redecorated? Or possi-

bly it just needs a spruce up and you are short on design ideas? The bathroom might be the smallest room in the house, but it’s also one of the easiest to update, a fresh lick of paint, some new tiles or updated bathroom accessories is all you need.

EXCLUSIVE villas are usually above €50 million

SUNSET ASHRAM: One of the most famous beaches in the Balearics.

BRITISH fortune-holders are becoming the owners of the most luxurious and exclusive properties on the Balearic Islands. The value of the exclusive villas in question is usually above €50 million, and when they are put on sale, only a few lucky buyers are offered the chance of purchase. According to Spanish daily ElEconomista, the latest of these properties could be the s’Estaca in Mallorca, owned by renowned actor Michael Douglas. ‘The most beautiful car ever made’ THESE were the words of someone whose opinion is worth considering, Enzo Ferrari commenting on the launch of the E Type Jaguar in 1961. Initially the car was released for export but was soon made available for sale in the UK where it found a large number of interested customers. Produced from 1961 to 1975, various versions saw a number of improvements but the basic line, beauty and performance of the car remained. With celebrity purchasers including George Best, George Harrison, Tony Curtis and Twiggy, the E Type will always be remembered as one of the great British cars and an example is even in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

A strong Levante brings flat water whilst the Poniente attracts swells to please surfers of all types. It is important to choose the right beach at the right time, as if the wind blows from the east, it can blow in an erratic fashion due to buildings in town. Alcanada doubles up for awards CLUB DE GOLF ALCANADA, in the north of the sunshine island of Mallorca, has been nominated once again for the title of Spain’s ‘best golf course’ in the 2015 World Golf Awards. One of 15 outstanding venues nominated in last year’s inaugural awards, Alcanada - the only course next to the sea in Mallorca - has once again been shortlisted for the prestigious title. Alcanada’s director of golf, Kristoff Both, said: “We are thrilled to have been short-listed once again for this title, not least because the competition for such an accolade in Spain is extensive. Many of Europe’s best golf courses are in Spain, so we are in very good company.” The club, which sits in a breathtaking location overlooking the Bay of Alcudia, is not unfamiliar with such accolades. It was awarded an ‘outstanding’ rating by Leadingcourses.com - the highest level

And, last year, it was ranked the highest-rated course in the Balearics by Golfboo, the world’s

Bigger and better golfing competition THOUSANDS of golfers participate Getting in the swing with Campbell Lamont

By Tony Myles THIS is the fifth year for The Campbell Lamont Golf Leagues, which started as a local competition for golf societies and quickly expanded into a major event in the amateur golf calendar. Because of the instant success Campbell decided to offer it to other areas within Spain and inside one year several thousand golfers had responded. This solid base of competitors provided the launch pad for further expansion and just last year Campbell

introduced his Golf Leagues to societies in Scotland and Wales increasing the number of players to well over 10,000. The latest news is that Iceland (no not the frozen food company) have now taken this competition very seriously and so hundreds of Icelandic golfers are now eager to qualify. The universal interest in the competition means that over the next year or so it will be introduced to 16 different countries throughout Europe. Why is it so popular? Let’s start at the end and work backwards. The “All Expenses Paid” Grand Final will be held at the La Sella Golf resort in the Costa Blanca. This venue features one of the premier golf courses in Spain and has proven an excellent test of golf for players of all handicaps. It will involve four rounds played over Saturday and Sunday. The winners will receive an abun-

Each of the 16 pairs who reach the Grand Final will be hosted at the five star Denia Marriott hotel for the duration of their stay. This will include breakfast and evening meals with the exception of the Saturday evening when they will be free to travel into any of the local towns. Everyone will be invited to attend the Gala Dinner on the Sunday, which will include the presentations to the winners and runners-up. So what is the catch? What is the entry fee? * Entry into this competition is restricted to groups of 12 or more

golfers who play regularly and adhere to a recognised handicap system. * Each group must register their intention to compete and provide details of their members who will make up their teams. * There are no additional overheads as the group will merely label four or more of their regular events as Campbell Lamont League Qualifiers. * Having completed the qualification series within the group the names of the top two players are then confirmed to the organisers who will notify the group of any local and national preliminary rounds. * There is no entry fee.

In summary 1. Register your team. 2. Play your regular games. 3. Determine your winners. 4. Advance to the Regional Finals. 5. Come to the 5 Star La Sella Golf Resort, Spain in June for an all-expenses-paid golf-fest. Register now at www.clgolfleagues.com
