Festive fun in Zurgena
AN inmate from Sevilla Prison escaped when he was on a hiking trip with other inmates and asked to go to the toilet. He was serving a sentence for drug-related crimes.

BUSY SEASON: Plenty of Christmas activities in Zurgena. THE town hall in Zurgena has set up a comprehensive programme of cultural and leisure activities for the festive period. The programme has been organised with residents of all ages and different interests in mind so that everyone can enjoy the festive period. As usual, the cooks of Zurgena will have a starring role thanks to the Christmas Cakes Contest, with a prize for the best cake. Taste, presentation and originality will be
assessed by the judges. The presentation and tasting will take place tomorrow (Friday), from 4.30pm in the old town hall. There will also be coffee available. The same day, starting at 11am in the Renfe Hall, Zurgena children will get the opportunity to have fun with craft workshops, which will be repeated on Saturday at the same time, but in the old town hall. On Sunday, students of music teacher Maria Piernas and the dance school ‘RIA pi ta’ will carry out a performance
in the town’s theatre from 6.30pm. Similarly, on January 4, the church of San Ramon will host a Concert Choir, with performances from 7.30pm by the choir Choral Maria Auxiliadora of Zurgena along with its children’s choir plus the Voices of Almanzora singers. On Sunday, January 5, ‘Their Majesties’ will be visiting Zurgena for the Three Kings Parade. The parade starts at 6.30pm and after its completion, gifts will be distributed at the
El Ejido farmers will receive compensation FARMERS affected by a freak hailstorm which smashed greenhouses have been promised €5 million compensation. The governing council of the Junta de Andalucia regional government has given the green light to the aid for farmers in El Ejido whose greenhouses were damaged in last month’s storm.
According to data provided by the Junta, the storm damage hit greenhouses over an area of 106 hectares. Rural Development Programme of Andalucia 2007-2013 will also be included in these payouts, which may benefit the owners of the affected farms, both individuals and corporations.
The maximum amount of aid given will not exceed 40 per cent of cost of the damaged greenhouses and will not exceed €100,000 per farm. The maximum eligible amount has been set at €15 per square metre for each greenhouse.

Long delays on A7 after lorry fire A LORRY fire on the A7 motorway near to Almeria City caused seven kilometres of queues. The lorry caught fire on a stretch of the motorway at kilometre 437 in the direction of Murcia. The traffic soon began to build up and stretched out as far as the neighbouring town of Roquetas de Mar. Several drivers phoned to warn of a big traffic jam on the motorway to the town of Roquetas de Mar, going back to kilometre 430. Both the Guardia Civil and road maintenance service specified that the delays were due to the vehicle fire, the cause of which remains unknown.
