Empty public buildings ews Nwatch are €43 million waste 2013 baby A STRING of newly built public buildings worth €43 million are lying empty in Malaga province Cash strapped councils either cannot find the money for running costs or are in dispute with each other over who should pay. A €1.4 million public kindergarten in La Cala de Mijas with room for
300 children was finished a year ago. But classrooms remain closed as Mijas Town Council and the Andalucian Government argue over who should pay its running costs. In Torremolinos the €4.1 million Municipal History Museum, expected to open by October 2011, is nearly finished, but just one
painting is available for display. Other examples of buildings lying empty include the €11 million Congress and Trade Show Centre in Antequera and the €2 million Valle del Guadalhorce health centre in Cartama. In Ronda, seven different projects worth more than €5 million are in a similar situation.

OR Marina Alabau, 2012 was truly a memorable year. She recently returned to Spain after winning last month’s World Windsurfing RS Title in Borocay, the Philippines, adding to the medal she gained as the first Olympian to win gold for Spain at the London 2012 Games. And her success last year did not end there, for Marina was also named ‘Golden Andalucian Woman’ by the Andalucian Sports Journalists Federation. The 27-year-old professional windsurfer almost won an Olympic medal five years ago in Beijing when she finished fourth in the women’s event. The following year she won the Women’s RS:X World Championship in Weymouth, UK, adding to five European Championship wins in Cyprus, France, Israel, Poland and Madeira between 2007 and 2012.
