British councillor of Competa dies
Protest march successful NERJA Town Hall have asked the Regional Government to pay their outstanding debt of €160,000 in unpaid grants to a local charity. Lack of funding could lead to Taller de la Amistad - which helps those with intellectual disabilities - being forced to close, putting 28 people out of work as well as affecting around 200 people throughout Axarquia. This comes after around 500 people marched from the charity’s headquarters in Urbanizacion Condal to the Balcon de Europa in Nerja.
TRAM LINE: The discontinuation of the tram service was called a total failure.
Call for return of Velez-Malaga tram THE discontinuation of Velez-Malaga’s tram service was called a ‘total failure’ by opposing Andalucia party, PA. Mayor Francisco Delgado stopped the tram service last June 4 until the Andalucia Regional Government agrees to support it. It was replaced with a transport system based solely on buses, which is never on time, according to the PA. The PA has asked the mayor to rethink his stance, bring back the tram and foster the transport service as stated in his election programme with the second phase of the tram. “The €45million investment – in the tram – has ended up with the trains locked away,” say the PA, which has lodged an appeal with the Superior Court of Justice for the tram service to be resumed. They are willing to withdraw this appeal if the mayor reconsiders. Meanwhile, official sources estimate that 41,629 fewer people have used the municipal transport system in the last three months. The summer period normally sees a higher demand due to the holidays and the arrival of tourists. August alone recorded 19,041 fewer users than last year. It is estimated the deficit for the municipal transport service this year will be more than €1million, just as in 2011. “The problem in Velez is that there is no culture of public transport. Only 8.4 per cent of the population use it,” said the mayor.
A BRITISH councillor has died age 69 after a long illness. Tom Ferber had been Competa’s tourism councillor since 2007 and was in charge of the expatriate’s office. He was a retired teacher from Lancashire. Tom, a graduate in Technology and Design teaching in a British school, first came to Malaga after taking Spanish lessons. From then on, he spent every summer in town until he retired nine years ago, bought a house in Competa and moved there. Ferber also created the volunteers’ service of the tourism office, which provides information in 14 languages. Several hiking routes were also designed by him and he is the author of recent information guides published on Competa.

Torrox has no School Board THE Socialist Party cabinet in Torrox has not yet established the Municipal School Board. Political Party IU stated the process has not been completed in one and a half years by the cabinet. The Education councillor and the mayor are thus preventing teachers, pupils and families from participating in local decisions
over education, IU claimed. Spokesperson Teodoro Ruiz thinks that the Education councillor ‘has no idea about this instrument’ which is a democratic tool of participation in the daily life and quality of education’. There are five primary schools, two high schools, two nursing schools and an adult education centre in the town.
