AIDS sufferer cured TIMOTHY RAY BROWN, also known as ‘the Berlin Patient’, addressed the media in Washington DC recently as doctors announced he was “cured of AIDS and will remain cured.” Brown underwent a stem cell transplant of his immune system, using cells from a donor who was genetically immune to the HIV virus. Brown was diagnosed with HIV while studying in Berlin in 1995 and was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2006. After trying chemotherapy unsuccessfully, in 2007 his doctors suggested the new treatment. He has not taken his HIV medication since the day of the transplant. Since then, he has become a figure of inspiration to AIDS sufferers around the world, and has established a new foundation in his name. However Steven Yuki, part of a team who claimed at an International Workshop on HIV and Hepatitis Virus in Sitges, Spain back in June, claims they might have found some of the virus still in his body. Brown is adamant any remnants of the virus are dead and cannot replicate, declaring “Let me be clear. I am HIV-negative.”
