The Gathering Ireland 2013 “Ireland welcomes the diaspora back home.” On 24 January, An Post’s new postage stamp celebrating The Gathering Ireland 2013 was unveiled by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar at the GPO. Also pictured above is Chief Executive, Donal Connell, An Post. Minister Varadkar said: “It’s a real privilege to launch this stamp which was designed especially for The Gathering. This eye-catching stamp will make its way right around the globe, doing its own job of promoting The Gathering wherever it’s sent.” “The people of Ireland are key to making The Gathering a success. I’m delighted to report that more than 2,500 community Gatherings have already been organised across Ireland. The launch of this stamp is a great opportunity to organise more events this year. I urge anyone with family and friends abroad to use the stamp, send a letter, and invite them home in 2013.” The stamp was created by Design Factory and depicts elements of The Gathering’s logo combined to form a map of Ireland. It can be used on invitations to family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances to come to Ireland this year for celebrations which are expected to attract around 325,000 extra overseas visitors. Stamp Issue of the Year 2012 Centenary of the sinking of RMS Titanic was voted Stamp Issue of the Year 2012. The names of those who voted for this issue were entered into a draw to win one of ten prizes. The prizes have been issued to the winners and consisted of six First Day Covers signed by the stamp designers.
Spring Stamp and Coin Show The Spring Stamp and Coin Show will take place on Sunday, 7 April in the Clyde Room, RDS, Dublin 4 (Anglesea Road entrance), from 11.00am to 5.00pm. Single admission is €5, family entry is €10 and children are more than welcome. Dealers in stamps, coins, postcards and medals from all over Ireland will be attending. An Post will once again have a stand at the show featuring all their latest philatelic products. A limited edition booklet with a special overprint will be on sale at the door for €8. This year the souvenir will be the Weddings Self-adhesive Booklet of 10 National Rate Stamps. There will also be a Show cancellation produced for the event. 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE IRISH CANCER SOCIETY Spreading hope for cancer sufferers and their families.
According to the National Cancer Registry of Ireland (NCRI), roughly one out of every three people living in the country will develop one of the more than 200 different types of cancer at some stage in their lives. However, due to advances in medical science, the fact that more and more people are prepared to make lifestyle changes and the tremendous efforts of the Irish Cancer Society, 42% of men and 50% of women diagnosed with cancer can now hope to survive for a further five years and, in many cases, even longer. 6
The Irish Cancer Society began life in 1963, when Professor Austin Darragh, a highly regarded Irish physician, discovered that too many people were dying every year from a curable form of cancer. Professor Darragh realised that if people better understood their condition, their chances of survival were greatly increased. Providing critical information on the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer is one of the cornerstones of the Irish Cancer Society’s mission.

CONTEMPORARY ARTS – VISUAL ARTS Irish creativity is receiving worldwide acclaim once again. As a relatively small country, Ireland has always punched well above its weight in terms of creativity. Today, Irish visual artists – through their creative explorations – are garnering attention and acclaim, both nationally and on an international level. Born in Dublin, Amanda Coogan is one of the country’s most creative proponents of performance art. An exciting and highly talented performer, she exudes a raw physicality in her live durational exhibitions – including her extraordinary The Fall – that are designed to both challenge and 8
stimulate appreciative audiences. John Gerrard, who works both in Dublin, where he was born, and at his studio in Vienna, is known primarily for his mixed media sculptures. An example of his virtual sculptures is Smoke Tree that features a realtime model of an oak tree that uses smoke in place of leaves. Though born in London in 1939, painter Stephen McKenna has been living in Bagnelstown, Co. Carlow since 1998. Famous for his paintings, watercolours and drawings,

Dorothy Cross was born in Cork in 1956. She works in a wide cross section of visual arts media, from sculpture and photography to video and installation. Her work Ghost Ship, which won her the 1998 Nissan Art Project, featured a decommissioned lightship that was painted with luminous paint so that it would appear – and disappear – like the lightships themselves.

EUROPA – ‘POSTAL VEHICLES’ Celebrating the many different ways mail is delivered. Europa stamps were first issued back in 1956 as a way of demonstrating solidarity and a shared sense of purpose amongst the member states of a precursor to the European Union, which at the time numbered just six countries – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. In 1993, European Post Offices (PostEurop) assumed responsibility for issuing Europa stamps on a yearly basis. Under their aegis, a common theme is selected at PostEurop’s Philatelic Forum at which all members of PostEurop are given the opportunity to 10
propose their preferred themes. The themes are then put to a vote, and the final selection is made. Then each individual country is charged with coming up with a design and issuing their own stamps based upon that theme. Every philatelist will no doubt remember last year’s theme, ‘Visit’, and the two stunning Irish stamps that depicted the Small Skellig and Dublin’s iconic Ha’penny Bridge. The agreed themes for 2014 – 2016 have been ratified and they include ‘National Musical Instruments’ (2014), ‘Ecology in Europe – Think Green’ (2015) and ‘Old Toys’ (2016).

For this year, which also happens to be the 20th anniversary of PostEurop, the theme is ‘The Postman Van/Postal Vehicles’. This theme celebrates all the various ways and means the post is delivered in every country, from modern trucks and vans to vintage postal vans and even the humble push bike. To reflect the ‘Postal Van’ theme, An Post is issuing two stamps designed by Steve Simpson. The first stamp shows two postmen, one on his bicycle and the other pushing a post trolley. DUBLIN – UNESCO CITY OF WORLD LITERATURE Authors abound in one of the world’s most literary cities. When the city of Dublin was nominated UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) City of Literature in July 2010, the capital of Ireland became just the fourth city to be honoured, following in the footsteps of Edinburgh, Scotland (2004), and Melbourne, Australia and Iowa City, USA (2008). This acknowledgement while most gratifying, was hardly surprising. Stop a stranger on the street almost anywhere in the world and ask which world city do they most associate with literature and chances are they will say Dublin. 12
The city on the Liffey lays claim to no fewer than three Nobel Prize winners for Literature: George Bernard Shaw, W.B. Yeats and Samuel Beckett. Other literary luminaries who have called Dublin home include Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, Sean O’Casey, Flann O’Brien, Brendan Behan and James Joyce. More recently, the list of Dublin-based scribes has lengthened considerably. The names of Roddy Doyle, John Banville, Anne Enright, Sebastian Barry and Joseph O’Connor have helped ensure that Dublin’s rich literary tradition continues to flourish.

The UNESCO designation – which is on a permanent basis – recognises the quality, quantity and diversity of Dublin’s many excellent libraries, publishing houses and booksellers, as well as its world-acclaimed writers. Some of the other criteria for the designation include having literary-focused educational programmes, experience in staging literary events and festivals, the role played by literature in the urban environment, and the active involvement of the media in promoting literature and growing the market for literary products.

JOHN F. KENNEDY 1917 – 1963 His legacy lives on to this day. As one of the most charismatic political figures of the twentieth century, John Fitzgerald Kennedy is remembered for a great many accomplishments during his all-too-short life, a life that ended so tragically and violently as his motorcade drove though Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas, Texas on a bright November day in 1963. Not just in America, but throughout the world, change was happening at an accelerated rate in the early years of the 1960s. But rather than shy away from change, Kennedy embraced it with every fibre of his being. 14
During his tenure as Commander-in-Chief, President Kennedy – the first Catholic president of the United States – accomplished a great deal in a relatively short time. In 1962, he diffused the Cuban Missile Crisis, thereby averting the possibility of an all-out global nuclear war. He inspired the establishment of the Peace Corps which today sends thousands of volunteers around to world to help those in need. His commitment to space exploration ultimately resulted in America landing the first man on the moon. He also introduced laws that ended segregation in interstate travel facilities.

In Ireland, JFK is perhaps best remembered for the state visit to his ancestral homeland in June of 1963. His itinerary for the four-day visit included, amongst others, addressing both Houses of the Irish Oireachtas, laying a wreath at the graves of victims of the Easter Rising and paying a visit to the Kennedy ancestral home in Dunganstown, County Wexford.

AN GARDA SÍOCHÁNA A proud history of protecting life, liberty and property in Ireland.
To mark the 75th anniversary of An Garda Síochána in 1997, An Post issued a commemorative stamp on 18 February of that year as part of a four-stamp set that also celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Irish Government, the Defence Forces and the Judiciary. The commemorative stamp marking the 75th anniversary of An Garda Síochána featured the Police with the Garda emblem. This represented the second time a Garda stamp was issued; the first occasion being on 23 August 1988. An Garda Síochána na hÉireann, which literally means Guardians of the Peace of Ireland, was known as the Civic Guard when it was 16
first established in 1922 following the War of Independence, during which more than 400 members of the constabulary died. The new police force was set up by the government of the day to replace the Royal Irish Constabulary and the Irish Republican Police. Today, An Garda Síochána – which comprises nearly 14,500 Garda and civilian employees – has a wide remit that includes crime prevention, national security, road safety and the prevention of anti-social behaviour. The force is also deeply committed to working with communities throughout the country in an effort to minimise crime.
Apart from their well-known role in Ireland, An Garda Síochána has also been involved in numerous peacekeeping missions abroad with the United Nations. Since 1989, when a 50-strong Garda contingent travelled to Namibia, the force has helped preserve peace and promote democracy in countries such as Angola, Cambodia, Cyprus, Mozambique, South Africa and the former Yugoslavia. Philatelists interested in finding out more about the fascinating history of An Garda Síochána might consider a visit to the Garda Museum and Archives located at the Record Tower at Dublin Castle. Here the
proud and distinguished history of the force comes to life through a huge collection of historical archives and artefacts detailing the evolution of An Garda Síochána, as well as the Irish Constabulary, the Royal Irish Constabulary, the Dublin Police and the Dublin Metropolitan Police. The Norman Round Tower, which houses the Garda Museum and Archives, dates back to the 13th century and is the last remaining structurally intact medieval tower to be found in Dublin.

50th International Eucharistic Congress Issue Date: 7 June, 2012 Expiry Date: 7 June, 2013 To mark this occasion, two commemorative stamps were designed by Martin Barlow. The 55c stamp features the Chalice and Host and illustrates the importance of the Eucharist to the Catholic faith. The 82c stamp depicts the Monstrance and the Blessed Sacrament, and illustrates how the lay faithful in the Church view the Monstrance and the Blessed Sacrament as the visible presence of God. Volvo Ocean Race Issue Date: 14 June, 2012 Expiry Date: 14 June, 2013 To celebrate this prestigious event, An Post issued a set of two striking stamps designed by Steve Simpson and based on paintings by Vincent Killowry. The stamp shown captures the tremendous competitive spirit of the race itself and is denominated at 55c.
