In this edition we report on the “great adventureâ€? of the LĂśtschberg railway, the round birthdays of Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler and artistic poet Ernst Kreidolf, and on the anniversaries of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) and the Swiss Civil Defence service. And it also shows all the miniature graphic masterpieces dedicated to these topics. My job includes compiling this information from internal databases for the magazine. The last four pages of each issue of “Focus on Stampsâ€? are indispensable for philatelists and EWUVQOGTU s VJKU KU YJGTG VJG[ ECP Č°PF CP QXGTview of the latest stamp issues. Held just once every six years, this major event in the stamp world was heralded a complete success. Despite the superb autumn weather, well over 10,000 visitors made their way to the REX sports centre and the Frey-Näpflin Foundation museum in the capital of Canton Nidwalden. Exhibitors of fascinating collections competed for top rankings and coveted prizes, while dedicated dealers exhibited rare KVGOU 5YKUU 2QUV .KGEJVGPUVGKP 2QUV CPF the UN from Geneva were all in attend-

The LĂśtschberg Railway started operating in the summer of 1913 with the 14.612 kilometre LĂśtschberg Tunnel as its core element. And this impressive pioneering achievement of yesteryear continues to promote north-south exchanges and understanding to this day.

From 1881 onwards, high court judge, cantonal council member and National Councillor Wilhelm Teuscher (1834–1903) lobbied tirelessly for a link-up to the planned Simplon Railway which was opened in *QYGXGT OQTG [GCTU YGPV D[ DGHQTG VJG ȰTUV VTCKP VTCPUKVGF VJG .ÒVUEJberg, while the Spiez-Frutigen Railway was commissioned as early as 1901. Originally set up to protect the civilian population in wartime, the Swiss Protection and Support Service’s main mission today is to protect citizens in the event of disasters, making an invaluable contribution to Switzerland’s safety. The Cold War provided its motivation in the initial development phase though, as a small neutral state, Switzerland designed a concept unlike any other worldwide: in the event of atomic war in Europe, the population of Switzerland was to survive underground. Once strictly confidential – now a Civil Protection Museum Switzerland’s only Civil Protection Museum, opened in 2005, lies concealed under a park in Zurich-Wipkingen. The original Landenberg three-storey round bunker built back in 1941 has been preserved and is open to the public. With photos, documents and many exhibits, the museum documents the history of civil protection in Switzerland. It is run by “Schutz & Rettung Zürich” (Protection and Rescue Zurich), which reports to the City of Zurich Police Department.

A day in the SAC’s Doldenhorn hut

Long days, short nights Managing a mountain hut is not a job for sleepyheads, because the mountains are a hive of activity on ďŹ ne summer days, as Aschi MĂźller and Gabi Forrer know only too well. For six years, they have been running the SAC’s Doldenhorn hut above Kandersteg. It’s 2.30 a.m., and there’s not a light to be seen down below in Kandersteg where VJG NQECNU CTG UQWPF CUNGGR $WV CV metres above sea level, it’s time to get up. Aschi MĂźller, manager of the Doldenhorn hut, prepares breakfast. Six blearyeyed mountaineers are stoking up for the long ascent to the summit. After breakfast, they pack their rucksacks, tie on their headlamps and trudge out into the dark. MĂźller quickly hops back into bed in the little manager’s room, even though only DTKGČą[ DGECWUG VJG QVJGT IWGUVU IGV WR around 7.30 a.m. “During high season, the nights are short and the days are longâ€?, says MĂźller with a laugh. his partner Gabi Forrer run the hut which belongs to the SAC’s Emmental section. With its 38 berths it is one of the Swiss Alpine Club’s smaller huts. Soon an Olympic discipline (again)?

Der SAC fördert nicht nur den Breitensport, er setzt sich auch für die Spitze ein: Sportklettern ist seit 1994, Skitourenrennen sind seit 1997 in die Verbandsstrukturen integriert. Der SAC organisiert in beiden Sportarten nationale Wettkämpfe und ist zuständig für die Zusammenstellung und Betreuung der Nationalmannschaften. Mit Erfolg: Schweizer Athletinnen und Athleten stehen international regelmässig auf dem Podest. Skitourenrennen können in der Schweiz auf eine lange Tradition zurückblicken: An den ersten Olympischen Winterspielen 1924 in Chamonix gewannen vier Schweizer den militärischen Patrouillenlauf. Zur Olympiade möchten auch die Kletterer: Sportklettern hat Chancen, im Jahr 2020 olympische Disziplin zu werden. Der Entscheid fällt im Herbst 2013.

Le CAS organise des compétitions nationales pour les deux types de sport et est responsable du suivi et du renouvellement des équipes nationales. Le succès est au rendez-vous. Les athlètes suisses sont régulièrement sur des podiums internationaux. En Suisse, le ski-alpinisme renvoit une longue tradition: lors des premiers Jeux olympiques d’hiver de Chamonix en 1924, quatre Suisses ont gagné la patrouille militaire. Les grimpeurs aimeraient aussi participer aux olympiades: l’escalade sportive des chances de devenir une discipline olympique en 2020. La décision tombera à l’automne 2013.

The SAC not only supports recreational sport, it also promotes sport at the highest level. Sport climbing was integrated into the association’s structures in 1994, and ski mountaineering in 1997. The SAC organises national competitions in both sports and is responsible for providing support and representatives to the national teams. It has enjoyed a great deal of success, with Swiss athletes regularly winning medals at international level. Ski mountaineering has a long tradition in Switzerland. Four Swiss athletes won the military patrol at the first Olympic winter games in Chamonix in 1924. Climbers would like to be able to compete in the Olympics as well, and sport climbing has a good chance of becoming an Olympic discipline in 2020. The decision will be made in autumn 2013.

Just as Switzerland without mountains is unthinkable, the same is true of Switzerland without the SAC. Ever since it was founded, the SAC has been leaving its mark on the Alpine nation. On the initiative of SAC members, the Federal Council renamed Switzerland’s highest summit in the Monte Rosa the Dufourspitze (4634 m) in honour of the topographer General GuillaumeHenri Dufour. Club members tirelessly climbed conquered summits as well as many more that had never been reached before, described routes in publications, covered the Alps with a network of huts and paths, were active in the formation of guides and took part in rescue operations. They also played a key role in producing the Swiss National Map. If it hadn’t been for the SAC, mountain tourism would not have developed to the same extent. At the same time, the club made sure that not every summit was connected by rail.

Su iniziativa di soci del CAS, nel 1863 il Consiglio federale ribattezza la cima più alta della Confederazione, nel massiccio del Monte Rosa, con il nome di Punta Dufour (4634 m), per rendere omaggio al generale e topografo Guillaume-Henri Dufour. Instancabili, i soci del sodalizio salgono vette già conosciute, ne affrontano molte altre inesplorate, pubblicano descrizioni degli itinerari, dispiegano una rete di capanne e sentieri sulle Alpi, si impegnano per la formazione di guide e per il soccorso. E collaborano in modo determinante alla redazione della Carta nazionale della Svizzera. Eine Schweiz ohne Berge – undenkbar. Eine Schweiz ohne SAC ebenfalls. Seit seiner Gründung hinterlässt der Club im Land Spuren. Auf Initiative von SACMitgliedern taufte der Bundesrat 1863 den höchsten Gipfel des Landes am Monte Rosa zu Ehren des Generals und Topografen Guillaume-Henri Dufour in Dufourspitze (4634 m) um. Unermüdlich kletterten die Clubisten auf bereits beund noch viel mehr unbestiegene Gipfel, beschrieben die Routen in Publikationen, überzogen die Alpen mit einem Netz von Hütten und Wegen, waren mitbeteiligt am Führer- und Rettungswesen. Und sie halfen entschieden mit bei der Arbeit an der Landeskarte der Schweiz. Ohne den SAC hätte sich der Tourismus in den Bergen nicht so stark entwickelt – und gleichzeitig schaute der Club, dass nicht jeder Gipfel mit einer Bahn erschlossen wurde.

Live safely “Safety is our Solution� has been the motto of the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (known by its German acronym bfu) which was set up in 1938 by the Accident Insurance Institute and the Accident Directors’ Conference. And this solution has lost none of its relevance today.

Flower children, butteries and dwarves Bernese artist Ernst Kreidolf (1863–1956) is regarded as the creator of the modern German-language picture book. He was not just a painter and graphic artist but a “painting poetâ€? in the true sense of the word. Kreidolf’s pictures and texts made his children’s books genuine works of art. Berne Museum of Fine Art honours Kreidolf’s work On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Ernst Kreidolf’s birth, the Berne Museum of Fine Arts will be showcasing this plant expert and animal lover in an exhibition entitled “Ernst Kreidolf und die Tiereâ€? (Ernst Kreidholf and the Animal World) from 21 June till 29 September 2013. Kreidolf knew a lot about plants and loved animals. Anything that ew, swam and moved attracted his fond attention, from beetles to elephants.
