EDITORIAL As many as 15 years ago, at the turn of the century and the millennium – and in the era of various „endisms“ – as philosophers and numerous scientists warned us of the possible end of ideology, the end of history, and the end of universal narratives – we faced the threat of the end of the art of theatre. It was speculated that film, video and particularly new technologies would obliterate and cancel out the image of an actor articulating dramatic text on a stage, night after night, to an audience hidden in a dark theatre hall. Yet this image has survived, and was in a way revived, and it seems to me that theatre has obtained a new kind of strength, primarily in its discourse that establishes a direct dialogue with our reality. On the other hand, however, in contemporary Europe, in which we daily witness numerous crises, those of a financial as well as of an ethical nature, and in which we try to survive despite all the conflicts and contradictions, the theatre is one of the few spaces which can offer some sort of safe haven. In fact, theatre is a space that allows us both to forget and to remember, it’s a place where differences meet and establish contact, it’s a place open to dialogue and to changing perspectives; what once was a revolutionary space aiming to change the world, today 4

is a safe haven for artists and audiences hungry for reinterpretation of the same world. The kind of theatre that we in the ETC are interested in is the kind of theatre that is successful in posing important questions about our era and at the same time discussing the topics that obsess our time. Therefore we believe that Ukraine today is a true geographical and theatrical space in which theatre establishes a direct dialogue with our time, testifying to the fact that Europe is changing its discourse and theatrical perspectives en route from Berlin to Kiev. The project „Theatre, Freedom, Dialogue: European Networking with Theatres in Ukraine and Belarus“ and in particular its showcase of Ukrainian theatre organised by the ETC is an opportunity for people to get together that will doubtlessly make the entire European theatrical space more exciting. The ETC offers a scholarship for young Ukrainian theatre makers, that creates the opportunity to work for 6 weeks at an ETC member theatre in Germany, Belgium, Austria and Georgia. Ten selected scholars (from artistic, technical and administrative fields) join a production team and contribute until the premiere as part of the artistic ensemble. Furthermore each scholar has the chance to organize a public event on the stages of „his“ or „her“ hosting theatre and to present the own work in a discussion

contacts and expand professional and dialogue with the audience. A scholarship meeting at the Schauspiel relations. Leipzig, partner city of Kiev, in October will be one of the highlights of the residency where the scholars have the possibility to connect and exchange experiences. The intensive work program involves the scholars into the daily routine thus offering the chance to discover working structures and artistic processes of a theatre in a foreign country. It allows experiencing different working methods, to create new

Leipziger Volkszeitung, 28 October 2015: „Most of them [Ukrainian scholars] barely know each other before, at most hearing one or the other name of the theatre scene. Only now, during their three days meeting in Leipzig, the Ukrainians got to know each other. The basis for a better network at home. Altogether the meeting led to euphoric tones during the closing meeting on Monday“. Süddeutsche Zeitung, 2 November 2015: „The idea that theatre has to be political generally is controversial amongst the Ukrainian theatre makers. Actress and dancer Olga Popova, who assists in Graz, says with low voice: ‚Politics do not touch me. To be creative, I have to be touched.‘ Andrii Palatnyi instead, who has experiences with foreign plays, wishes for a stage in Kiev, that is solely dedicated to political theatre. Political means first and foremost documental. Refugees from Donbass are talking about their fleeing, soldiers talking about death and the cold. Either they do it themselves – keyword ‚Bürgerbühne‘ – or actors renarrate. An important source is facebook, endless chronicle of the present. […] But conscientious recording is leading to the question: where does political theatre end and where does a talk show begin? A good question from Julia Gonchar, 25, who assists at the Staatstheater Karlsruhe.“

YAROSLAVA SYDORENKO works as stage and costume designer for film and theatre in Kiev. After graduating from Fashion Design studies in the Ukraine she spent several years in Cardiff, Great Britain, studying Theatre Design and implementing her first theatre projects. Yaroslava works in different disciplines, she is involved in drama, opera, puppetry, short movies and other events. At the Theater Dortmund, Germany, she assists the stage and costume department in the production „Das schweigende Mädchen“ by Elfriede Jelinek directed by Michael Simon.

KHRYSTYNA KHOMENKO not only organizes and curates various theatre

festivals, as for example the festival „Gogolfest“ and the „Week of actual play“, also she works as theatre critic for different magazines and internet portals. Furthermore she blogs about the Ukrainian theatre scene. Khrystyna is very committed to open up the Ukrainian theatre to young and progressive theatre makers. In collaboration with some of her colleagues she is leading the movement „New Ukrainian Drama“ which brings together contemporary playwrights and initiates collaborations with young Ukrainian directors to put their work into practice. At the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Germany, she assists in the field of festival management and production for the „Biennale 2016“.

MARYNA LYMAR is a theatre and dance pedagogue, choreographer and cultural

manager in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. After graduating in French Studies and Cultural Management she practiced contemporary dance in France. In 1996 Maryna founded „DRUGIYE TANTSY“ (OTHER DANCES) , the first independent centre for contemporary dance of its kind in Ukraine. Its objective is to make known Ukrainian contemporary dance on an international level and to corporate with international organizations such as the Goethe-Institute. Maryna attempts to initiate independent cultural places in Ukraine as space for experimental approaches and innovative forms of artistic work. At the Théâtre de Liège, Belgium, she assists in the fields of theatre education and public relations.

JULIA GONCHAR works in the field of public relations, dramaturgy and international project management and she is also a playwright. After completing a Bachelor- and Masters diploma in International Business and Management she was involved in several theatre projects, attended workshops of dramatic writing and she is part of a group of new drama activists in Kiev. Julia has great interest in linking dramaturgy and public relations and the hereby resulting opportunities for the young Ukrainian theatre scene. At the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Germany, she assists in the areas dramaturgy and stage direction of the production „Die Kinder des Musa Dagh“ based on a novel by Franz Werfel directed by Stefan Otteni. PAVEL YUROV works as an actor, stage director and dramaturg in Kiev. After

completing his studies in Stage Direction he directed at „Suzirja Kyiv Academic Studio Theatre“ before working as an independent artist. In collaboration with colleagues Pavel curates the project „DramPortal“ presenting performative readings of European contemporary drama and of his own documentary texts. He regularly takes part in international activities and festivals to get to know different approaches to theatre work. Especially against the background of the political situation in Ukraine he seeks to raise awareness for the socio-political potential that drama offers. At the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg, Germany, he assists the festival management department for the „Heidelberger Stückemarkt“ and the „Tanzbiennale“ 2016. 14

ANDRII PALATNYI is a festival and project manager, performer and actor in Kiev. After graduating in International Business and Management and studies at the „Moving Academy for Performing Arts“ in Ukraine, Serbia and in the Netherlands he now works as manager for the largest multidisciplinary Ukrainian festival of contemporary art, the „Gogolfest“. Furthermore he represents the independent „CCA DAKH Theatre“ in Kiev as project manager and actor. The various artistic institutions that he is connected with aim to contribute throughout their work to social process. At the Staatstheater Braunschweig, Germany, he assists the festival organisation of the „Fast Forward Festival 2015“ and he will assist the ETC with the organisation of the 1st Ukrainian Theatre Showcase in Kiev.

YANA SENESYUTA works as light technician and designer at „Kiev Academic

Youth Theatre“. Already during her studies in Ukrainian Philology she supported student theatre projects with her lighting skills. Yana regularly takes national and international further trainings to improve her capacities and to get to know new techniques and professional approaches in her field. At the Deutsches Theater Berlin, Germany, she assists the light department in the productions „Wintersonnenwende“ directed by Jan Bosse and „Eisler on the Beach“ directed by Tom Kühnel and Jürgen Kuttner.

OLEKSANDR MARTYNENKO works as an independent actor, puppeteer,

stage director and author in Kiev. After completing his studies in Acting and Puppetry at „Kyiv National University of Theatre, Film and TV“ he had several engagements at public theatres before becoming a freelance artist. Oleksandr develops his own artistic projects with colleagues aiming to make contemporary Ukrainian theatre more relevant both politically and socially. At the Schauspiel Leipzig, Germany, he assists in the area stage direction of the production „Der Herzfresser“ by Ferdinand Schmalz directed by Gordon Kämmerer.

DMYTRO LEVYTSKYI is a writer, journalist and performer in Kiev. After his

graduation as professor in English and Ukrainian Language he assisted at the „School of Dramatic Art Theatre“ (Moscow) and took part in the festival „Week of Contemporary Drama Festival“ (Kiev). As author of several stage plays he experienced international success. As journalist and theatre maker Dmytro seeks to raise awareness for the political and social circumstances in the Ukraine and thus to enter into dialogue with Europe. At Kote Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre in Tbilisi, Georgia, he assists in international project and theatre management.

OLGA POPOVA works as theatre- and film director as well as an actress. After

completing the corresponding studies and her dance training in contemporary dance she acted in and directed several productions, took part in various summer school programs and workshops, amongst others at „Gogolfest“, Ukrainians largest multidisciplinary festival of contemporary art, and at the independent „DAKH Theatre“ in Kiev. For one year now, Olga and some of her colleagues have been developing theatre projects which attempt to combine dance, motion and drama. At the Schauspiel Graz, Austria, she assists in the area of stage direction of the productions „Cactus Land“ based on a novel by Anthony Loyd directed by Lily Sykes and „Benefiz“ directed by Mathias Schönsee. 15

10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS FOR BELARUS FREE THEATRE IN 2015 2015 marks the tenth anniversary of Belarus Free Theatre (BFT ), the radical underground theatre company founded under Europe's last surviving dictatorship and described as „one of the bravest and most inspired underground troupes on the planet“ by The New York Times. BFT has brought audiences some of the world's most provocative theatre – more than 40 new productions performed in over 30 countries across the globe over the past decade. From 2-14 November 2015, Belarus Free Theatre present a two-week festival of performances and discussions in London featuring some of their most acclaimed original productions, reinvigorated classics and the world premiere of a new work, Time of Women. For the first time, Belarus Free Theatre share the dual nature of their existence with UK audiences. BFT cannot publicise their shows in their homeland. Performances are staged in secret underground locations, encouraging audiences to reflect on how the company operate in Belarus where their existence is completely illegal. There are no tickets to collect, no box office to call. Audiences receive a text message 24 hours before the performance to give

them a meeting point. There, they are met by a member of Belarus Free Theatre and asked for a form of identification (in Belarus, audiences members bring passports to performances anticipating the likelihood of arrest). They are then led from the meeting point to the performance. Performances take place in basements, warehouses, private apartments, gyms, car parks, even in forests. Performers and audiences are under the constant watch of the authorities; performances have been raided by the KGB and audience members arrested. In spite of this, BFT is a hot ticket - typically 2,000 people apply for a 50-seat venue. BFT then return to their London home at the Young Vic for the final week of the festival. Following each performance, a curated panel of experts, including artists, campaigners, journalists and activists, digs deeper into the documentary material that inspired each play, with the aim of generating fresh ideas around taking up action. It is an approach drawn directly from BFT’s work in Minsk where the space for free exchange of ideas and open debate is as valuable as the space in which to see independent theatre.

The flagship event of BFT ’s tenth anniversary celebrations was the solidarity concert I’m with the Banned on Sunday 18 October at KoKo in London. BFT brought together a unique line-up of banned bands from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine together with artists who live in political freedom to stand up for artistic freedom of expression and against injustice. Featuring a 10th anniversary logo by renowned Chinese artist dissident Ai Weiwei, the line-up included: David Gilmour, Boombox, Brutto, Kenwyn House, DJ Laurel, DJ Andy Smith, Kim Cattrall, Pussy Riot, Neil Tennant, Jeremy Irons, Viktoria Modesta & Juliet Stevenson.

Currently reporting in both English and Russian, and covering untold and innovative stories from all over the world, Ministry of Counterculture (MOC ) curates and creates commentary and opinion from leading artists, activists, thinkers and change-makers. Video and print features include commentary from banned artist Ai Weiwei and leading futurologist Theodore Zeldin. MOC also broadcasts live events direct from venues in London and around the world, and will shortly be providing online arts educational programmes to students that may not have access to arts education through political or financial restrictions. MOC combines Belarus Free Theatre’s innovative approach to creating vital awardwinning art with hard-hitting human rights campaigns and education online.

Staging a Revolution kicked off with Sarah Kane’s final play, 4.48 Psychosis, the first production Belarus Free Theatre ever mounted underground in Minsk in 2005. BFT’s commitment to exploding taboos was cemented by the immediate condemnation of Lukashenko’s regime, who denied that themes touched upon in the play – suicide, mental instability, sexual and political violence – could ever exist within Belarus. Conviction in the artist’s duty to tell human truths and illuminate both obvious and hidden taboos within society has been a through-line in every BFT production over the past decade.

Inspired by Aristophanes' Plutus, the first political satire from ancient Athens, Ben Johnson's work on the emerging ethics of capitalism, and the inspirational text of 93-year-old Stéphane Hessel, which became the manifesto for the Occupy movement, Price of Money (2014) is a scathing attack on inequality and excess.

The UK premiere of New York ‘79, BFT’s dramatic response to experimental novelist, feminist and punk icon Kathy Acker’s eponymous text about American sexual identity, performed with its partner piece, Minsk, 2011: A Reply to Kathy Acker (2011). GENERATION JEANS THURSDAY 5 NOVEMBER

Generation Jeans (2006) is an autobiographical duologue about rock music and resistance, written and performed by BFT co-founder Nikolai Khalezin, with music by DJ Laurel. When Belarus was part of the Soviet Union its people were prohibited to wear jeans or listen to rock music. The buying or selling of either one could result in arrest at the hands of the KGB. Detained during a demonstration in 2004, Khalezin offers a candid account of the degradations of incarceration, the blossoming of young love and how denim became a symbol of freedom under the dictatorship. 22

Discover Love (2008) is a stirringly powerful original drama, researched over nine years, based on the true story of Irina Krasovskaya and her husband Anatoly, a businessman who supported the Belarus opposition movement. One fateful evening in 1999, Anatoly called to say that he would be coming home late. Irina never saw her husband again. His car was later discovered, but his body has never been found; he simply „disappeared“.

Zone of Silence (2008) is a modern Belarusian epic in three independent chapters offering a panoramic view of everyday life under dictatorship and the taboos that are vehemently repressed. In Childhood Legends, the Company share stories from their earliest years, lives lived under the shadow of authoritarianism. Diverse is a vibrant collective portrait of extraordinary Belarusians on the margins of society, from the self-proclaimed Best Dancer in the Universe to an armless guitar-playing former mafia member. The trilogy ends with Numbers, a cascade of grim statistics about life in Belarus.

Belarus Free Theatre serve up food, music, dance and Shakespeare as they share true stories from inmates, executioners, human rights lawyers and families of the executed. Provocative and urgent, Trash Cuisine (2013) pierces the imagination with moments of the darkest humour as it challenges the ongoing existence of capital punishment in the contemporary world. 36 countries retain the death penalty in both law and practice, and Europe remains on the list of continents where capital punishment still exists – in 2015 – because of Belarus.

TIME OF WOMEN MONDAY 9 & TUESDAY 10 NOVEMBER

The world premiere of a play about women on the forefront of a movement for a democratic Belarus, women with an unflinching and unswerving dedication to the truth. One is Irina Khalip, the PEN Pinter prize-winning journalist, arrested in Belarus for her coverage of Lukashenko’s regime and described by Sir Tom Stoppard as, “the writer I wanted to be”. Another is journalist Natalya Radina who was also imprisoned after the presidential elections of 2010. Amnesty International named her a prisoner of conscience and demanded her release, as did the Committee to Protect Journalists. Today she lives in exile in Poland and continues to run the Belarusian independent media portal Charter 97.

Shakespeare's great play about speaking the truth was one of the highlights of 2012's Globe to Globe Festival. Drawing on their first-hand experience of tyranny and exile, the Company present a fresh reading of the text drawing parallels between Lear's spiralling court and Belarusian society, whilst also interrogating the universality of power unwisely yielded. A strippedback set and BFT’s characteristically arresting visual style make this a vigorous and thoroughly contemporary Lear.

BEING HAROLD PINTER FRIDAY 13 & SATURDAY 14 NOVEMBER

Being Harold Pinter (2006) incorporates testimonies from Belarusian political prisoners with excerpts from Nobel Prizewinning playwright Harold Pinter's lifetime of writings. First performed in the UK in Leeds in 2007, it has become one of Belarus Free Theatre’s most acclaimed works. Blurring the lines between art and reality, it traces the relationship between power and violence in Pinter’s words, taken from five plays and his Nobel speech, to deliver a poignant contemporary commentary on institutionalised violence, freedom and human dignity. 23

PROGRAM UKRAINIAN THEATRE SHOWCASE 03-06 DECEMBER 2015

Upon the initiative of the ETC and Ukrainian theatre makers and artists of public theatres and the fringe scene, a three-day theatre showcase will take place in Kiev from the 3rd to the 6th of December 2015. A selection of Ukrainian theatre plays will be shown to an international professional audience, media representatives and stakeholders. In addition, workshops and discussion groups with artists focusing on international cooperation and media work practices will complement the showcase program. The visit of an international delegation to the theatre showcase shall enable theatre artists and theatre managers to gain new perspectives of international collaboration and is also an important step towards getting to know each other, exploring local structures, building trust, entering into dialogue on eye level and interlacing the artistic communication between the theatres in Ukraine and in Europe more tightly in the future. At the same time the theatre's important role as a public space of discussion and reflection with and in society will be stressed. Its responsible position to strengthen pluralism and to convey values will be addressed as part of the program.

This is the first production of the play written by the famous Swedish playwright August Strindberg on Ukrainian stage. The actions take place in Switzerland in the XVIth century during the reign of Erik XIV (whose father Gustav I is considered to be the founder of modern Sweden). King Erik was an extraordinary ruler and some experts claim that he suffered from schizophrenia. He became the first king to be referred to as “Your Grace”. He had a fascinating personality and, because he made many mistakes while ruling Switzerland, he became infamous as an odious monarch. Internecine wars, struggle with the Parliament, forbidden relations and out of wedluck children… Strindberg himself saw Erik as a Swedish Hamlet who first and foremost striving for personal independence; nevertheless, this desire strengthened by the fear of incomprehension and desolation turns into madness that is followed by emptiness.

The play „Viy 2.0“ by the popular Ukrainian playwright Nataliya Vorozhbyt is an original author version of a famous plot of a mystical story by Nikolai Gogol. As in Gogol's work, the action takes place in Ukraine but unfolds today: two French students, Lucas and Damian, come to Poltavshchyna by the invitation of a Facebook friend, they happen to get off at the wrong stop and get trapped into a Ukrainian night with all its modern „werewolves“… Over the course of a few days, a number of funny situations will happen in their lives, as well as one murder, three funerals and an encounter with evil spirits.

Ferdinand is the son of President von Walter, while Luise Miller is the daughter of a middle-class musician. Her aims are to reach the highest peak of the fame, wealth and women's happiness. Her beauty, intelligence and cunning cause men to tremble with delight. And the Lady is even ready to destroy the pure and innocent love of a young couple for her own desires. Ferdinand rebels against his father's plan and tries to persuade Luise to elope with him. The president and his secretary Wurm, who is in love with Louise, arrests Luise's parents for no reason. While grieving the murder of her parents, Louise is forced to write a love letter to the Hofmarschall von Kalb. How many more difficulties can these lovers endure? And can that love and virtue remain untouched by a world of lies and corruption from the age of Schiller that still remains relevant? The themes of choice, freedom and honour are imbued in the history of this tragic love.

This play is a comedy where myth and reality are equally real, where “radiologic” humor illuminates the truth of our lives, where potatoes are a delicacy, and condensed milk is deemed haute cuisine! „Why do we live at the ‚zone‘ and other people are living there – ‚not at the zone‘?“ „The territory of Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is becoming a metaphor for the whole country during the performance. In this performance we try to investigate the vast and varied world of the planet called GOGOL. For the work we turned to plots and fragments from Gogol works created in different periods. We generated our fantasies based upon these themes. Like Hoffman in Western literature, Gogol in our culture was a source for the Surrealist tradition – the world filled with fantastic characters that stir humans with imagination. This world is full of hyperphysical spirits and creatures, myths and legends – and now the world of Gogol's characters co-exists with our modern rhythms. There is no single story line in our performance. We combine drama, dance, gesture and song to stir up the imagination of our audience.

„Morituri te Salutant“ is a performance based on the works of Vasil Stefanyk (1871 – 1936), a Ukrainian writer recognized as one of the world’s best novelists. In Stefanyk’s texts, strong drama vividly contrasts with everyday life as he observes ordinary people confronting borderline situations. The play is composed of nine novellas that recount the everyday stories of parents and children, men and women, birth and death, dreams and reality, daily struggle and everlasting hope. In these stories, the tragic and comic are inextricably intertwined. In revisiting Stefanyk’s texts for the second time, the main challenge for director Dmytro Bogomazov was to find a way to tie together disparate stories thematically and stylistically in a single stage performance. His solution was to create a modern folk musical drama as the medium for dramatic events delivered with a certain bluntness.
