Home for Cooperation: Educational Centre in the Buffer Zone of Nicosia (CYPRUS | CHYPRE) This building was erected in the early 1950s and attached to the Nicosia renaissance fortifications. Like most of the architecture in the UN Buffer Zone it was suffering from daily disintegration, until having the good fortune to be included in the project implemented by the inter-communal organisation Association of Historical Dialogue and Research. Now functioning as an educational centre, and called Home for Cooperation, the building has become a unique peace project in Cyprus, because, whereas other buildings in the area still by their condition and neglect portray conflict and division, this one now clearly stands for cooperation and unity.
Ce bâtiment fut construit dans les années 1950 et rattaché aux fortifications de Nicosie datant de la Renaissance. Comme la plupart des bâtiments de la zone tampon des Nations Unies, il se désintégrait chaque jour un peu plus, jusqu’au jour où il eut la chance d’être inclus dans le projet mis en œuvre par l’organisation intercommunale : Association pour le dialogue et la recherche historique. Fonctionnant maintenant comme un centre éducatif et appelé Maison de la Coopération, le bâtiment est devenu un projet pour la paix unique à Chypre. Tandis que les autres bâtiments de la région, par leur état et leur négligence, dépeignent le conflit et la division, celui-ci représente clairement la coopération et l’unité.
Its new purpose is the launching of projects involving education and training, the advancement of research and dialogue and, its promoters say, ‘the empowerment of our competence as critical thinkers and citizens of Cyprus, Europe and the world’. Accessible from both sides of the divide without having to cross checkpoints, it provides a shared space that can be used by all. It thus symbolizes the philosophy of the Cypriot communities working together, in collaboration with the international community – ideals of course shared by Europa Nostra.
Son nouvel objectif est le lancement de projets d’éducation et de formation, le progrès de la recherche et du dialogue, et comme disent ses promoteurs : « l’autonomisation de notre compétence en tant que penseurs critiques et citoyens de Chypre, de l’Europe et du monde ». Accessible des deux côtés de la Ligne Verte sans avoir à traverser les postes de contrôle, il offre un espace partagé qui peut être utilisé par tous. Il symbolise ainsi la philosophie des communautés chypriotes travaillant ensemble, en collaboration avec la communauté internationale - idéaux naturellement partagés par Europa Nostra.
“The Jury felt that the Home for Cooperation was something to be really proud of. It constitutes, they felt, a substantial contribution to the revitalization of Nicosia’s United Nations Dead Zone as well as to the wider peacemaking procedure. Furthermore it represents a typical example of the 1950s architecture of Cyprus, which finds few supporters but which we are again starting to see as a brave and distinctive statement of the character of its period.”
« Le Jury a estimé que la Maison de la Coopération était un projet dont on pouvait être réellement fier. Elle constitue, selon lui, une contribution substantielle à la revitalisation de la Zone Morte de Nicosie, ainsi qu’à la procédure de rétablissement de la paix au sens large. En outre, elle représente un exemple typique de l’architecture des années 1950 à Chypre, qui trouve peu de partisans, mais que nous recommençons à voir comme une affirmation courageuse et significative du caractère de cette période. »
