Umbria is called the green heart of Italy. It lies in the upper part of the Tiber basin, between Tuscany, Lazio and Marche. To the north and east, Umbria is reached by the Apennines, while the southwestern part has an upland or gentle mountainous character. A special place in Umbria's landscape is occupied by the vast basin in which Lake Trazymena extends. A rich network of rivers and streams and significant precipitation in the mountains mean that water is readily available and fresh greenery lasts longer.

Umbria is famous for its magnificent landscapes, harmoniously combining natural and cultural elements. Umbria's cities and towns, usually located on the tops or slopes of mountains, are among the most beautiful in Italy, and hide magnificent monuments, including those from the Etruscan era. Characteristic of the landscape, therefore, are towns full of red-brick built houses and cobblestone streets, wrapped in greenery and flowers, looking down on us from the not-sohigh hills.

Umbria is also the land of saints - St. Benedict (in Norcia) and St. Rita (in Roccaporena near Cascia) were born here, St. Francis was born and worked here, and Assisi is one of the most important centers of Christian spirituality.i

Fields are intersected by rows of trees, and on the horizon every now and then rises the tall tower of a parish or monastery church. Wooden village churches and half-timbered houses are also characteristic.
