Boots for Bali Eumundi Voice regularly highlights outstanding work done by individuals or groups in supporting those in need. This issue we feature the selfless work by locals Eileen and David Walder in improving the lives of families in several impoverished villages in Bali. The 2008 Bali bombings severely affected tourism and income for many people. The Walders decided to go to Bali at this time and immediately fell in love with both the people
The Walders returned three times that first year and began a tiny project called Boots for Bali to collect second-hand football boots for the local Bugbug/Samuh boys. The “adoption” of a tiny kindergarten in Samuh village soon followed. It consisted of two rooms with dirt floors, an odd assortment of tiny tables and chairs and was filled with gorgeous tiny tots who sang and danced for the two Australian visitors. Since 2008 the Walders have fully equipped five villages with two school soccer teams and two volleyball teams. They have furnished two kindergarten classrooms and a teachers’ room, funded a three-year lease on the kindergarten land, built a kitchen so no child goes hungry, provided safe play equipment, and given two complete sets of uniforms, ceiling fans, teachers’ chairs and a covered walkway.
