Ideas. Change

The Global Governance Programme at the EUI Global Governance has become a key concept in many academic and policy debates. There is strong awareness nowadays that many issues have a global dimension, and cannot be effectively dealt with at the level of individual states. The world faces a myriad of increasingly complex issues, such as the instability in the international economic and financial system, climate change, development and poverty reduction, humanitarian crises and intervention, terrorism, conflict resolution and peace-building. Addressing these issues requires the involvement of global players, ranging from private actors to intergovernmental organizations. The role of the Global Governance Programme (GGP) in this scenario is to share knowledge, develop new ideas on these issues, and serve as a bridge between research and policy-making. Research, Policy and Training are the three dimensions of the GGP. The GGP is part of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) of the European University Institute, a world-renowned and truly European academic institution uniquely placed to contribute the European perspective to the global governance debate.

Research Strands Diverse dimensions of global governance are investigated, from different perspectives, through Research Strands. Internationally recognized academics lead each strand and coordinate the research as well as training, policy and scientific activities on the related issues. • Modes of Global Governance (Miguel Maduro, EUI) • Climate Policies (Denny Ellerman, EUI) • Development Policies (Giorgia Giovannetti, EUI/ University of Florence) • International Trade (Petros C. Mavroidis, EUI/ Columbia University) Global Governance Debates Global Governance Debates (GGD) bring together two experts representing diverging viewpoints on an issue of global relevance. The outcomes of the debates are published in the GGP Working Paper Series. Scholars, practitioners, policy-makers and students dealing with issues of global governance are welcome to register and attend the GGDs. High-Level Policy Seminars The 2012 GGP High-Level Policy Seminars aim to generate and contribute to academic and policy debates by convening key policy makers and academics to discuss the current challenges of global governance. • Trade Roundtable • Courts, Social Change and Judicial Independence • The Democratic Governance of the Euro • Global Higher Education: The Future of Ideas
