The Secretariat should also collaborate in any research projects which may be operated on the lines s1,1ggested by the Joint Advisory Co_mmittee of O.SEC, OIE ·and the Commission , set :up at the First Meeting of the Commission.

After full consideration of the report pres(rnted by the Joint Advisory Cammi ttee, the Commission strongly recommended that the follovving research projects be carried out in the near future~

(i) Holding a seminar, in 11.msterdam, in the l at a autumn 1955, on the typing and cultivation of foot-and-mouth disease virus ,

(ii)· Experiments to determine the duration of immunity in cattle for the virus contained in the commonly--used trivalent vaccines against foot-and-mouth disease 9 these experiments should be carried out· from the field or practical a~gle as now ii1 progress in the Netherlands and under strictly controlled l aboratory conditions ,

. It was further agr eed thqt an approach be made to OEEC for collaboration and financial support for these projects.

The Observer from OEEC said-that- i1is Organization is always happy to collaborate with the Commission· .

OEEC i s prepared to mount the Seminar or.. behalf of the Commission and as r.egards the proposed experiments ; when satisfactory details have been worked out including the q_uestion of material support from the different countries, he believed that it would be possible to carry out the proposed · r esearch w·ork .

C. Arrangements should be made to ~eceive information on the foot-andmouth position in parts of the world outside Europe. Assessment should be made of t he risks of the presence of .the disease in such parts of the world to European countries through· trade and other~'activi ties. Consider ation should be given to methods whereby such risks can be removed or minimized. In all this work, the closest collaboration will be maintained. with other interl'1ational organizations especially OIE and OEEC.
