EU Green Week 2020 - a new beginning for people and nature

The EU Green Week is an annual opportunity to debate and discuss European environmental policy at the national level. Organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment, this key event in the environment policy calendar attracts policymakers, leading environmentalists, stakeholders, and other interested parties from across Europe and the Globe.

The EU Green Week is an annual opportunity to debate and discuss European environmental policy at the national level. The EU Green Week 2020 in Moldova took place on 19-23 October 2020 on the topics of nature and biodiversity. It highlighted the contribution of biodiversity to our economy and society, including the essential role it plays in stimulating sustainable recovery from the crisis. This also was an occasion to rethink our relationship with the nature, including questions on how the unsustainable human activities drive biodiversity loss and cause a wider ecological crisis, what are the implications for our economy and society and how could this status of things be changed. In this context, the EU Green Week examined how a range of EU policies such as the European Green Deal could help to protect, restore and sustainably manage the nature, leaving sufficient room to recover and thrive. This year’s EU Green Week also acted as a milestone on the path to the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, planned for 2021, where world leaders will adopt a new 10-year action plan for biodiversity – a new global deal for people and nature. In addition to the high-level conferences in Lisbon and Brussels, the programme included a series of partner events and actions taking place across Europe. As well as being invited to take part in person, stakeholders and the general public were encouraged to become ‘virtually’ involved by participating in a range of on-line and social media activities.
