www.ETSUBucs.com Head Coach Eleventh Season UNC Greensboro ‘94 Now entering her 15th year as a coach and the 11th season as the head coach of the women’s soccer program at East Tennessee State University, Heather Henson has led the Bucs to four consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference tournaments (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008) and numerous off the field accomplishments. Henson continued to elevate the Bucs success in 2008, despite battling injuries throughout the season, leading ETSU against one of the toughest schedules in the A-Sun. After leading the Bucs to their best start since the 2003 campaign, Henson coached current ETSU players Jordan Monty and Kelly Brinkman to All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors for the second consecutive season, while current sophomore goalkeeper Megan Masch was announced on the A-Sun All-Freshman squad. Off the field ETSU continued to excel in the classroom as 21 Bucs were named to the A-Sun All-Academic team and Buc Honor Roll, while current players Rachel Van Horn and Terri Miller both earned 4.0 GPAs in consecutive semesters. Overall, Henson’s Bucs were named as an NSCAA All-Academic team for the entire 2008-09 season. During the 2007 campaign the Bucs had an 11-6-3 overall record, making history defeating Stetson, 2-1, to advance to the A-Sun conference tournament semifinals for the first time in program history. Henson has led current Bucs Jordan Monty, Katie Green and Kelly Brinkman to the All-Atlantic Sun Conference Second Team, while Brinkman was also named to the all-freshman team. In the process, the Bucs broke several team records, setting the second highest single season goals mark at 38, while shattering both the single season record for assists and points. The Bucs also took top team honors twice in two regular season tournaments, winning both the Citizens Bank ETSU Invitational and the Gamecock Soccer Classic. Individually, both Green and Monty were named as each tournament’s MVP respectively. In the classroom the women’s soccer team continued to show its character earning a 3.32 team grade point average in 2007. The Bucs named 18 of its 22 student-athletes to the Buc Honor Roll, 12 to the Dean’s List, and had two players earn a GPA of 4.0 for the entire year. In 2005, the Bucs made a successful transition to he A-Sun, posting an 8-11-1 record, despite losing six games by only one goal. The Bucs, at the time, set the

school record for shots and goals in a season. Coach Henson was recognized as having one of the most improved Division I women’s soccer teams for the 2003 season by Soccer Buzz, a nationally recognized source for collegiate soccer information. Henson and the Bucs broke many of the records they had set in 2002 including best overall and conference records, lowest goals against average in the season, allowing a mere 19 goals, and most goals in a season tallying 38. The Bucs were also able to cut their goal differential by 50 percent and increase the number of games they scored in by 50 percent. Henson arrived in Johnson City after a four-year stint from 1995-98 as head coach of High Point University’s soccer program. While at High Point, Henson led the team to back-to-back CVAC tournament championship appearances in her first two seasons and reached the championship game each year. She also helped the team move from NAIA competition to NCAA Division II and finally to NCAA Division I. In addition to her coaching duties at High Point, Henson served as the Athletic Department’s Senior Women’s Administrator from 1997-99. Prior to becoming the head coach at High Point, Henson served as an assistant coach for the Panthers men’s and women’s teams from 1994-95. In addition to her collegiate coaching career, Henson has been active in coaching organizations including the National Soccer Coaches Association and the United States Soccer Federation and holds her NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a USSF ‘B’ license. Henson is also a member of the NSCAA National Ranking Committee as the A-Sun voting member.

Andy Stoots

Associate Head Coach Sixth Season Milligan College ‘02 Stoots joined the Buccaneers in 2004 and now enters his sixth year with the women’s soccer program and his second season as the associate head coach at ETSU. Stoots assists head coach Heather Henson in all facets of running the program with a focus on goalkeeper training. Under Stoots, current sophomore Megan Masch earned 2008 A-Sun All-Freshman honors after finishing her first year in goal as one of the league’s top keepers. Also under Stoots’ leadership former alumni Erin Bilyeu and current junior Rachel Van Horn currently hold 15 individual or career records and allowed only 28 goals in 2007. Prior to ETSU, Stoots served as an assistant coach for the Troy State women’s soccer program. As the team’s goalkeeping coach, Stoots helped guide Troy State’s goalkeepers to their lowest goals-against average in the program’s history. He also assisted the team to improve academically with his implementation of an academic success plan that contributed to 12 players with over a 3.0 GPA. Stoots’ duties also included recruiting and planning travel.

In 2002, Stoots served as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Milligan College. While there he helped lead the Lady Buffs to a berth in the Region XII Finals and guided their goalkeeper to All-America honors. Outside the collegiate ranks Stoots has assisted the goalkeepers for the TN Olympic Development Program and was the head director of goalkeepers and as a staff coach for the Fusion Soccer Club. Stoots holds an NSCAA Premier National Coaching Diploma and has taught the goalkeeping section of the USSF ‘D’ coaching course and as a Region III ODP and USYA staff member. In addition to his coaching experience, Stoots played as a goalkeeper at Milligan for four seasons, serving as team captain his junior and senior seasons. He helped lead the team to a 15-7 record in 2001, setting a school record for wins. Stoots also holds individual honors at Milligan for career shutouts, career goals against average, and wins. A native of Bristol, Tenn., Stoots graduated in 2002 from Milligan College with a degree in Human Performance and Exercise Science. Stoots is married to wife Tiffany. The couple lives in Johnson City, Tenn., with their son Ethan.

Heather Birdsell enters her second year as a member of the ETSU soccer staff. After an outstanding player career Birdsell continues to advance as a coach, earning both her USSF National D License for coaching and NSCAA Regional Goalkeeper Diploma I and II during her first season for the Bucs. The Plano, Texas, native comes to the Tri-Cities after a strong playing career at Samford University. Birdsell had one of the most decorated careers in Bulldog history, being named a four-time All-OVC First-team member and was a member of the all-southeast region team three consecutive years. She ranks among Samford’s all-time top-five players, both in goals and assists and is ranked in the top-10 in points and games played. During her illustrious playing career at Samford, Birdsell led the Bulldogs to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances, three OVC regular season championships

6

and an OVC tournament title. Birdsell was at her best when on the grand stage, helping the Bulldogs advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament against No. 19-ranked Vanderbilt. Off the field Birdsell excelled in the classroom, making the Dean’s list all but one semester of her undergraduate career. She has spent time coaching the local club team in Johnson City, in addition to being a coach for the U-11 Briarwood Soccer Club and Charlotte Eagles soccer camps. Overall, Birdsell has spend numerous hours helping with the Urban Kidz after school program, Habitat for Humanity, Lakeshore Foundation Olympic and Paralympics training site, Mercedes Marathon and Dawson 5K and St. Martin’s In The Pines Nursing Home. A 2008 graduate from Samford University, with a degree in Sports Medicine, Birdsell enters her second year of graduate school and is expected to graduate with a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology and Sports Science in May of 2010.

2009 Buccaneer Women’s Soccer

www.ETSUBucs.com Despite battling injuries and setbacks to a number of players ETSU continued to show why it’s one of the top teams in the Atlantic Sun, earning its fourth consecutive trip to the league’s postseason tournament. Outside the A-Sun the Bucs, under head coach Heather Henson, continued to gain respect nationally as a program, facing top teams such as TCU, South Carolina, North Texas and Vanderbilt a season ago. With some of the top soccer teams in the country giving ETSU reverence, a number of Buccaneer players were also recognized on the field for their individual accomplishments. Current senior Jordan Monty and junior Kelly Brinkman were named to the 2008 All A-Sun Second-Team for the second consecutive season, while sophomore Megan Masch earned All-Freshman honors. In addition to the on-the-field awards, ETSU continued to show its character off the field naming a record 21 players to the A-Sun All-Academic team and Buc Honor.

Forwards

After losing only one senior at forward the Bucs return a host of talent in their attacking third of the field. Leading the way for ETSU is senior and two-time all-conference selection Jordan Monty. One of three ETSU captains, Monty is expected to have a big season for the Bucs. After leading ETSU in numerous offensive categories a season ago (goals, assists, points and game-winning goals) Monty is again expected to create opportunities in the Bucs scoring zone. Overall, Monty has been a clutch player during her career for ETSU; Henson and the Bucs coaching staff will again look to that this fall. Joining Monty is a pair of talented upperclassmen in junior Terri Miller and senior Danielle Bayles. Despite going unrecognized on the postseason awards list, Miller

again looks to create scoring chances for the Bucs this fall after an outstanding sophomore season a year ago. The Cape Coral, Fla., native finished in the top-two in all four major offensive categories last fall and Henson looks for Miller, like Monty, to finally get noticed for her play this season. Due to an injury that keep her sidelined a season ago, Bayles returns with the potential to add to the ETSU firepower. Henson looks for the senior to have a potential breakout senior season, after the setback of an ankle injury. “I think Danielle is a player that has been unlucky at times,” said Henson. “However, she’s a player that possesses a strong leg and should have a chance to put the ball in back of net.” Like Bayles, junior Rachel Van Horn returns after an injury that sidelined her for the last seven matches. After getting off to a hot start in 2008, Van Horn’s versatility gave opponents fits last fall, as the flank forward powered her shots through the backline defense. Overall a physical force, Van Horn will be look upon to win 50-50 balls in the air and show her strong leg both with scoring chances and assists inside the box. Joining Van Horn is fellow junior Jessica Huntington. An outstanding team player with good speed, Huntington’s vision should help the Bucs fill various roles in the attacking third. Rounding out the forwards is freshman Tori Head. The local Tri-Cities product is expected to come in and give the Bucs an instant spark. “Tori possesses a quick first step, so her acceleration will help her to create scoring opportunities,” said Henson. “Our coaching staff expects her to come in and really get into the mix as we open camp and head into the season.”

Midfielders

Just like the forward position, the Bucs return a number of 2008 starters, led by junior, two-time all-conference selection, Kelly Brinkman. Brinkman enters the fall after posting three goals, two assists, for eight points last season. Overall, the ETSU captain has great vision with the ball that makes her a threat every time she gets a touch. “Kelly has great ability to create wherever she’s on the field,” said Henson. “She’s worked hard this offseason to get better and become more of a complete player and I know she is the type of leader that can pull our team together.” Also returning for the Bucs is fellow upperclassmen Kim Jones and Morgan Jutras. Jones returns for her senior campaign with a wealth of experience (she

started and played in all 56 career matches) and should anchor and control the midfield with great defense. “Kim is the type of player that we expect to win a lot of balls in the air, in addition to being a multi-position type player,” said Henson. Jutras enters her third year for the Bucs as one of the club’s hardest working players. Overall, the sound technique player should provide the Bucs with much-needed depth. Rounding out the returning letterwinners is sophomore Genna Petersen. The quick and active midfielder provided a spark for the Bucs in her first full season, starting 14 out of 18 matches. “Pete is a player that has great vision and really does a great job keeping her spacing when she attacks an opponent,” Henson said. The crafty sophomore will look to build on her success last fall where she totaled 14 shots and set up a number of Bucs’ goals off of long passes. Joining the returning players are a number of talented freshmen. Newcomer Morgan Thomas, with her outstanding athletic ability and quick first step, should battle for minutes and a starting position as camp opens in August. Joining Thomas are fellow freshmen Charlotte Summerall and Kathy Musacchio. Summerall should bring both depth and intensity to the position, while Musacchio is a very technical player that should develop nicely under Henson’s direction.

Defenders

Despite losing seniors Meredith Goldman and Rachel Layer, the Bucs still have a strong group returning as backs, including dependable senior Kia Kindell. Kindell returns to the backline as a reliable

day-in day-out player who has shut down some of the A-Sun’s top offensive players over her career. Overall, the Westchester, Ohio, native is expected to anchor a tough ETSU defense that allowed only 6.5 shots on goal per match last season. Alongside Kindell, junior Jennifer Altimier is expected to step in after an outstanding sophomore season. “As a staff we thought Jen did a great job last season with her closing speed, which created havoc for our opponents’ offensive players,” said Henson. “Like Kia, what makes Jen such a special player is she works hard and really minimizes her mistakes each match. She’s one of those players that aren’t flashy, but she simply shuts down the opposition’s best offensive player when she’s on the field. We expect her to really have a breakout year this fall and come into her own.” Joining Kindell and Altimier, are both junior Alex Meehan and sophomore Jessica Hiltenbrand. Meehan returns for her third season and is expected to step up and be ready to play as a possible starter. “We need Alex to step in this fall and be a force on our defense,” said Henson. “After losing our seniors last season, she is expected to be a vital key to our backline this fall.” After starting eight out of 14 matches last fall, Hiltenbrand has started to grow into her own. A excellent one-on-one defender, like Meehan she will be expected to aid one of the top defenses in the A-Sun.

Goalkeepers

Under goalkeeper and associate head coach Andy Stoots, ETSU has boasted some of the top keepers in the A-Sun over the past five seasons, which include returning sophomore and 2008 A-Sun All-Freshman team member Megan Masch. Masch had an outstanding first year in goal, compiling the fourth

8

best save mark in the league, while finishing second among conference keepers in shutouts. “Megan was very impressive in her first season in goal and we again expect the same from her this fall,” said Henson. “She is the type of player that goes out and does her job. So many times she came up with a big save for us to win a match throughout the season and she is very respected by our other A-Sun coaches.” Joining Masch are two talented keepers in sophomore Caitlin Gaughan and freshman Kelsey Meigs. Despite not seeing a lot of action in her first season for the Bucs Gaughan used her time wisely to develop into a very technique-oriented keeper this offseason. “Caitlin really used last fall as a growing process and has become a very capable and talented player,” commented Henson. Like Gaughan in 2008, the intense Meigs is expected to develop into a quality collegiate keeper this fall for the Bucs.

2009 Schedule

After facing one of the toughest schedules in recent memory just a season ago, things won’t get any easier for the ETSU women’s soccer team this fall as five teams that reached NCAA postseason play highlight the 2009 campaign. After taking advantage of two home preseason exhibition matches against King College Aug. 13 and Winthrop Aug. 16, ETSU kicks off its 2009 slate at defending Southeastern Conference Champion Tennessee Aug. 22. The match will mark the third career time the two in-state rivals have faced each other, after the Bucs and Lady Vols last competed against one another back in 1997 and 1998. After a brief road match at defending Southern Conference Champion Western Carolina Aug. 28, ETSU welcomes Liberty to SummersTaylor Stadium for its home opener Aug. 30. After its opening match

www.ETSUBucs.com at home ETSU will travel to face its third consecutive league champion on the road, as the Bucs take on reigning Big South winner Radford Sept. 4. The Bucs will follow that contest up with their last nonconference home match Sept. 6 as UNC-Asheville makes the short trip over to Johnson City. After facing one SEC powerhouse to open the season, the Bucs will make their toughest road trip of the year, facing both Mississippi and Mississippi State in a span of two days, Sept. 11 and 13. ETSU last faced Ole Miss back in 2007, while its match with the Bulldogs marks the first in program history. After their quick trip through Mississippi, the Bucs will face their final defending conference champion as reigning Atlantic 10 winner Charlotte welcomes ETSU to the D. L. Phillips Soccer Complex Sept. 18. The nationally ranked 49ers are coming off their most successful season in program history, making it to the second round of the College Cup, after winning their second straight A-10 tournament. With the non-conference schedule complete, the Bucs return home with their first two A-Sun matches against North Florida, Sept. 25 and Jacksonville, Sept. 27. As October rolls around ETSU will have three straight league road matches starting at defending league champion Belmont, Oct. 2. After back-to-back trips to Lipscomb, Oct. 4, and Campbell, Oct. 8, the Bucs return to Summers-Taylor Stadium for the final time with three straight home matches against USC Upstate, Oct. 12, and Mercer, Oct. 16, before hosting Kennesaw State, Oct. 18, for senior day. As the regular season closes out ETSU will take its last road trip with matches at FGCU, Oct. 23, and Stetson, Oct. 25, before the A-Sun tournament begins Oct. 31st.

www.ETSUBucs.com ETSU’s Eighth President Emory, ’68 Dr. Paul E. Stanton, Jr., became the eighth President of East Tennessee State University on January 1, 1997. A native of Atlanta, Stanton earned a bachelor of arts in chemistry at Emory University in 1965 and was awarded an M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia four years later. His internship in rotating surgery was completed through Tampa General Hospital at the University of South Florida, where he was chosen from 23 interns to receive the Upjohn Intern of the Year Award in 1970. Stanton went on to a surgical residency at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta from 1970-74 and then began a one-year fellowship in vascular surgery at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago. He received board certification in general surgery in 1976 and gained special certification in general vascular surgery in 1983. Between 1975-83, Stanton directed the Surgical Residency Education Program at Georgia Baptist Medical Center, where he also served as active attending physician (1975-85) and as director of the Blood Flow Lab (1976-85). An assistant clinical professor of surgery with the Medical College of Georgia (1980-85), he became Chief of Surgery at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in 1982 and assistant director of the Medical Education Department the following year. Stanton also co-directed the Georgia Baptist Medical Center/Medical College of Georgia Vascular Fellowship from 1980-85 and was an adjunct professor of medicine at Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy between 1982-85. In 1985, Stanton came to Johnson City as director of the Division of Peripheral Vascular Surgery for the Veterans Administration Medical Center and ETSU’s College of

Medicine (a position he held for six years) and served as associate professor of surgery at the university. The following year, he was named professor and chair of the Department of Surgery in the College of Medicine. In 1988, he became Dean of the James H. Quillen College of Medicine and Vice President for Health Affairs at ETSU. In November 1996, Stanton was selected as the university president by the Tennessee Board of Regents, ETSU’s governing board and the largest higher education system in the state as well as the sixth largest in the nation. Stanton’s professional memberships are many, and his community and statewide service is extensive. He is also heavily involved in academic committees and advisory councils from ETSU to the national level. He has authored over 80 articles for a variety of medical publications and several chapters for books, delivered over 100 scientific and poster presentations, worked to attract millions of dollars in grants to ETSU, and from 1988-95 served as associate editor of Vascular Surgery. A member of Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa, Stanton can be found in the Directory of Distinguished Americans for Achievement in Surgery, Men of Achievement, Outstanding Atlantans, and Who’s Who in the Southwest. In 1997, then Tennessee Governor Don Sundquist appointed Stanton to the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). In 2002, Stanton was elected Vice Chairman of the SREB, which is America’s first interstate compact for education with 16 member states. He was re-elected Vice Chairman in 2003-2005. Stanton co-chaired the Tri-Cities Tennessee/ Virginia Economic Summit, which was held in May 1998. And, in 1999, he represented the university as a delegate in the All-America City competition that culminated in the Tri-Cities TN/VA becoming the nation’s first All-America City Region.

In January 2002, Stanton-Gerber Hall was dedicated on the grounds of the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home, ETSU’s neighbor and partner. The $36 million basic sciences building represents federalstate cooperation, consolidates medical school operations on one campus, and is named for Stanton and for the late Dr. Carl J. Gerber, who was then the VA center director, as they worked together to see this project to fruition. For five consecutive years (2004-2008), Business Tennessee magazine has placed Stanton among the 100 most powerful people in the Volunteer State. With the support and challenge of Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen, Stanton led the university and the region in a successful 2005 campaign to establish the ETSU College of Pharmacy, which opened in January 2007 with 72 students enrolled in its inaugural class. In 2008, the new school was named the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy.

Director of Athletics Samford, ’68 Dave Mullins became ETSU’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on April 14, 2003. Mullins had served as interim director since the previous December. In that time Mullins help lead the Bucs athletic department through a transition to the Atlantic Sun Conference. In his tenure ETSU has won the 2008-09 and 2007-08 Bill Bibb Trophy for combined All-Sports race, the 2008-09 and 2007-08, Jesse C. Fletcher overall men’s sports race and in 2006-07, ETSU swept both the allsports trophies after being named the top men’s and women’s athletic program in the Atlantic Sun. Prior to his promotion to AD, Mullins was a widely respected coach, leading the ETSU men’s tennis team from 1988-2002. In 2002, Mullins led the squad to its second NCAA tournament appearance. Despite falling to Auburn in the first round, Mullins had many things to be proud of after looking back on the 2001-02 season. The SoCon Tournament crown was his fifth tournament championship and the program also boasted its fifth Most Outstanding Player of the SoCon Tournament in freshman Moises Serrano. However, these successes were modest when compared to ETSU’s list of accomplishments under Mullins’ direction. Mullins coached 28 all-conference players during his tenure, en route to being named Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year five times. After Mullins began coaching the Bucs in 1988, ETSU has had numerous ITA nationally and regionally ranked players,

including the school’s first All-American, in current men’s tennis coach Yaser Zaatini, who received the honor in 1992 and 1993. Mullins also had 18 Southern Conference singles championships, 11 doubles champs, and five Southern Conference Players-of-the-Year. Mullins twice guided ETSU to back-to-back regular-season SoCon championships in 1995 and 1996 and again in 1999 and 2000. The Bucs have gone undefeated in the SoCon four times and from April 1998 through April 2000 they won 21 straight conference matches. In his 15 years of service, Mullins compiled an overall record of 237-103 (.697) and a conference mark of 85-24 (.780). Besides mentoring athletic talent, Mullins built a reputation of recruiting studentathletes who maintained a high standard of excellence in the classroom. In 2002, the squad was named an ITA All-Academic Team for a second time (1999) and six of the team’s eight players managed a GPA of over 3.60 (4.0) including a 3.9 GPA in the fall of 2002. On top of all that, Mullins coached five players who earned Academic All-American honors. Prior to the 1996 season, Mullins doubled as the head coach for the ETSU women’s tennis program. During his eight-year stint with the Lady Bucs, he posted a 98-73 overall mark (.573) and a 29-19 (.604) record in the conference. Mullins registered winning records in five of his last six seasons with the women’s tennis team, and was awarded the women’s SoCon Coach of the Year in 1989. Mullins earned his B.S., cum laude, in English from Samford University in 1968 and his master’s degree in education from the University of Tennessee in 1974.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 25th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual or team off-season conditioning program.

Championships Dancing Again

In 2008-09, the ETSU men’s basketball team continued to build on its long-standing tradition of success, capturing the 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championship. With that victory, the Buccaneers made their eighth trip all-time to the NCAA Tournament, while bringing home the 26th overall championship in program history. More recently, ETSU has now enjoyed four 20-win seasons in the last seven years, having won conference titles in each of those four campaigns.

Back-To-Back

After posting a program-tying fourth consecutive winning season, ETSU women’s basketball made history by making its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2008-09. The Lady Bucs, who boasted the number one seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, defeated Mercer and Jacksonville en route to being tabbed the No. 13 seed in the Berkeley Region. ETSU set a new school record with 16 conference victories and tallied its third straight 20-win season after finishing the campaign at 20-11. Four Lady Bucs were rewarded for their hard work on the court, as Siarre Evans was named the 2009 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, while Latisha Belcher received Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year honors. In addition, TaRonda Wiles was named First All-Conference and Gwen Washington was selected to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team. Meanwhile, Evans also cleaned up at the A-Sun Tournament by being tabbed Tournament MVP and was also named a Finalist on the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team.

Three-peat A year removed from earning its first-ever NCAA Tournament win, the ETSU men’s tennis team continued to dominate play winning its fourth straight A-Sun Regular Season crown, while dropping league rival Stetson 4-2, for its third straight A-Sun Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth. In addition to its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance the No. 61-ranked Bucs sweep through the conference awards as head coach Yaser Zaatini was named the 2009 A-Sun Coach of the Year, while senior Enrique Olivares was again named the A-Sun Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and tournament MVP for the second consecutive season. Overall, the Bucs placed six total players on the all-conference teams in addition to running its current A-Sun winning streak to 34 straight wins.

are . . . BLUE The Tri-Fecta

The ETSU men’s cross country/track and field program joined an elite group in 2008-09, as the Bucs were only one of five Division I programs to win the “Triple Crown.” The Bucs began leg one of their quest on the first Saturday in November when ETSU held off Belmont for its first A-Sun crown and 21st overall conference championship. ETSU, who defeated the Bruins by six points (29 to 35), brought its first cross country championship back to Johnson City since winning the crown in 1996. Then, on the third weekend of February, the Bucs completed leg two of the Trifecta run, as ETSU knocked off reigning conference champion Kennesaw State and hoisted the A-Sun Indoor Championship crown for the third time in the last four years. The “Triple Crown” was finally completed in mid-May when the Buccaneer squad overcame many obstacles – and once again – held off Kennesaw State to claim its second outdoor title since joining the league in 2005-06. The ETSU distance runners had a huge hand in winning the championship, as the Bucs went 1-thru-3 in the 5000m and 1-thru-4 in the 10000m.

Redemption Head coach Steve Brooks’ squad returned to the Big Dance for the second time in school history, after winning both the regular season and A-Sun Tournament titles over league rival Stetson. Despite a first-round NCAA Tournament loss to in-state rival and host Tennessee, the Lady Bucs rolled to their best overall season in program history, placing four members on the allconference team, while senior Tara Byrne (MVP), junior Yevgenyia Stupak and sophomore Tara Sheets earned all-tournament honors.

Winning the Michael Stewart

In winning the Freshman of the Year award, Stewart followed in the footsteps of teammates Power and Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) as the third straight Buccaneer to capture the honor. At last month’s A-Sun Championships, he rallied from four strokes down entering the final round to catch and pass fellow freshman, Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume, thanks to three consecutive birdies on his closing nine holes. His win marked the third in a row for a Buccaneer, following Power in 2007 and Shaw in 2008. His win at the A-Sun Championships carried him to a unanimous spot on both the AllAtlantic Sun First-Team and All-Freshman Team.

Tara Byrne

After leading the ETSU women’s tennis team to its second NCAA Tournament appearance senior Tara Byrne received the prestigious Southeast Region ITA/NCAA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The First-Team All-A-Sun member and tournament MVP also became the second player in program history to surpass 100 career wins. Back on April 13, 2009, the local Johnson City native became ETSU’s all-time career wins leader, passing Masha Illina’s mark of 103 victories. Overall the four-time allconference member and team captain left ETSU with 107 career wins, which tops all players in the A-Sun this past season.

Yaser Zaatini

After losing four seniors off of the 2008 Bucs squad head coach Yaser Zaatini responded by leading ETSU through one of the toughest schedules in the entire nation. After coaching ETSU to its sixth straight unbeaten conference season and wins over four ITA-ranked teams, Zaatini was honored for the second straight season as the A-Sun Coach of the Year. Overall, it was Zaatini’s third “Coach of the Year” honor by the A-Sun and fifth overall (SoCon 2004, 2005) The Bucs earned their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance after dropping league foe Stetson, 4-2 for its third straight A-Sun Tournament title.

32

Yevgenyia Stupak

Stupak continued to impress in her junior season leading the Lady Bucs to a share of their third regular season championship and second A-Sun Tournament title. Overall, Stupak rolled to an impressive 30-6 singles mark, picking up wins against players from 16 ITA-ranked teams. In addition to a remarkable 23-9 doubles record, Stupak was the highest ranked ITA player in the conference, which helped earn her the 2009 A-Sun Women’s Player of the Year award.

Seamus Power

Power, who was part of an ETSU awards sweep as the Freshman of the Year in 2007 (with Warren and Rhys Davies), became the third Buccaneer to win the conference Player of the Year. Power and former teammates Davies (2006-07) and Gareth Shaw (2008) combined to put an ETSU stranglehold on the league’s top individual honor over the last four years. He joins Jacksonville State’s Matias Anselmo as the only two in Atlantic Sun history to win both the Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in a career. The Waterford, Ireland native shared Medalist honors at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational and placed second at the Kauai Collegiate Cup. In addition to the A-Sun honor Power became the eighth person in ETSU men’s golf history to receive All-America honors as he was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.

Fred Warren

The Bucs legendary golf coach picked up his ninth Coach of the Year award in 2009. Overall, the Hall-of-Famer coach has won the A-Sun award twice, to go along with the seven he totaled while in the Southern Conference. Under Warren’s direction the Bucs earned their 18th trip to the NCAA Championships this past May.

Ben Ronoh

ETSU track and field newcomer Ben Ronoh lived up to the hype after helping the Bucs win the “Triple Crown” in 2008-09. The native from Sotik, Kenya was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. At the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships, Ronoh swept the 3000m and 5000m events on the David E. Walker track inside Memorial Center and was named the league’s top performer. The sophomore distance runner made it a clean sweep after winning the steeplechase and finishing second (behind his cousin Kenneth Rotich) in the 5000m and 10000m at the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Fla.

Passion, Determination and Dedication

Right Way Enrique Olivares

Overall, Olivares closed out his career as not just one of the top men’s tennis players in program history, but as one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of intercollegiate athletics at ETSU. The second winningest player in school history wrapped up his career with a remarkable 115 wins, including posting an Atlantic Sun Conference record-setting mark of 32-1(.969 winning percentage). The fourtime A-Sun First-Team member and twotime A-Sun Player of the Year, became the highest ranked ITA preseason player in school and league history in 2008 as the No. 9-ranked ITA singles player in the nation. The three-time A-Sun Tournament MVP, again led the Bucs to their fourth straight A-Sun Regular Season title and a third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. A mainstay in the national rankings since arriving in the Tri-Cites, Olivares held 14 career wins against nationally ITA ranked players.

Siarre Evans

Since arriving in Johnson City in the fall of 2006, rising senior Siarre Evans hasn’t disappointed the Lady Buccaneer faithful. After adding Atlantic Sun Freshman Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team and Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team accolades to her resume in her first two seasons, Evans continued to impress in 2008-09. The Griffin, Ga., native, who became only the 16th ETSU player of all-time to reach the 1,000-point club and lead the conference with 16.4 ppg and 10.3 rpg, was named the 2009 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year and Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP. Furthermore, Evans’ stellar play placed her as a finalist on the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team.

Paul Hoilman

After an outstanding freshman season, Hoilman had a career 2008-09 sophomore year as he received numerous postseason awards including being named to the Louisville Slugger All-America Third-Team, the Ping!Baseball All-America Honorable Mention Team and the College Baseball Insider All-America Second-Team. Hoilman received Atlantic Sun All-Conference First-Team recognition and was selected as the A-Sun Player of the Week on April 27. The Johnson City native led the A-Sun in slugging, and finished in the top ten in batting average, on-base percentage, runs scored, RBIs, doubles, home runs, walks and sacrifice flies.

Heidi Dahl

Dahl was an outstanding track and field athlete in 2008-09, as she represented ETSU at both the Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships. The Orem, Utah, native became the first Lady Buccaneer student-athlete to receive All-America honors since 2000 at the Outdoor Championships, as she finished sixth in the 1500m run. In addition, Dahl claimed the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship in the 1500m at Louisville. Dahl, who won the Atlantic Sun Championship in the mile (indoor), 800m (outdoor) and 1500m (outdoor), was also a five-time A-Sun Athlete of the Week winner. The senior runner ran a leg in both the indoor and outdoor conference championship 4x400-meter relay. In total, Dahl contributed for 29 percent of the Lady Bucs’ scoring at the outdoor conference championships and was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at the post-race ceremony.

Kenneth Rotich

Kenneth Rotich, a three-time Cross Country Athlete of the Week winner, was named the Atlantic Sun Runner of the Year after winning the conference championship with a time of 24:34 in Macon, Ga. The native of Nairobi, Kenya helped the Bucs win their 21st cross country title in school history and was the first ETSU runner to win a championship since 1995. In total, Rotich won three races in 2008 and moved his current running total of A-Sun Athlete of the Week honors to six, which marks a new conference best.

Bo Reeder

Reeder came on strong in his freshman season tying the ETSU freshman home run record with 15 in his first year with the Bucs. Reeder was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team. The 2008-09 season saw many impressive feats out of Reeder as he defeated ACC foe Virginia Tech in his first career start, while throwing a complete game and hitting for the cycle in the same week. Reeder also came in to get the save against Tennessee on the road to complete a sweep of the Vols. Reeder was a unanimous selection for the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, was named the A-Sun Player of the Week and made the College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Lineup on March 23.
