Heather Henson Head Coach Eleventh Season UNC Greensboro ‘94 Now entering her 16th year as a coach and the 12th season as the head coach of the women’s soccer program at East Tennessee State University, Heather Henson has led the Bucs to four consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference tournaments (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008) and numerous off the field accomplishments.

Since joining the Bucs in 1999, Henson has placed 17 players on all-conference teams including four-time honoree Jordan Monty who became the first ETSU women’s soccer player to be named first-team all-conference in 2009. Henson has also had 13 Buccaneers earn Player of the Week honors, as well as three CoSIDA academic award winners. In the classroom, the women’s soccer team has had continued success, winning the NSCAA Academic Award four times since 2002. The team earned a 3.34 team grade point average (gpa) in 2009, and a 3.32 team gpa in 2007. Henson saw the Bucs reach the A-Sun tournament for a school record fourth time in 2008, despite battling injuries throughout the season, against one of the toughest schedules in the A-Sun. After guiding the Bucs to their best start since the 2003 campaign, Henson coached ETSU players Jordan Monty and Kelly Brinkman to All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors for the second consecutive season, while current sophomore goalkeeper Megan Masch was announced on the A-Sun AllFreshman squad. Off the field, ETSU continued to excel in the classroom as 21 Bucs were named to the A-Sun All-Academic team and Buc Honor

Roll, while current players Rachel Van Horn and Terri Miller both earned 4.0 GPAs in consecutive semesters. Overall, Henson’s Bucs were named as an NSCAA All-Academic team for the entire 200809 season. During the 2007 campaign the Bucs had an 11-6-3 overall record, making history defeating Stetson, 2-1, to advance to the A-Sun conference tournament semifinals for the first time in program history. Henson led Bucs Jordan Monty, Katie Green and Kelly Brinkman to the All-Atlantic Sun Conference Second Team, while Brinkman was also named to the all-freshman team. In the process, the Bucs broke several team records, setting the second highest single season goals mark at 38, while shattering both the single season record for assists and points. The Bucs also took top team honors twice in two regular season tournaments, winning both the Citizens Bank ETSU Invitational and the Gamecock Soccer Classic. Individually, both Green and Monty were named as each tournament’s MVP respectively. In 2007, the Bucs named 18 of its 22 student-athletes to the Buc Honor Roll, 12 to the Dean’s List, and had two players earn a GPA of 4.0 for the entire year. In 2005, the Bucs made a successful transition to the A-Sun, posting an 8-11-1 record, despite losing six games by only one goal. The Bucs, at the time, set the school record for shots and goals in a season. Coach Henson was recognized as having one of the most improved Division I women’s soccer teams for the 2003 season by Soccer Buzz, a nationally recognized source for collegiate soccer information. Henson and the Bucs broke many of the records they had set in 2002 including

best overall and conference records, lowest goals against average in the season, allowing a mere 19 goals, and most goals in a season tallying 38. The Bucs were also able to cut their goal differential by 50 percent and increase the number of games they scored in by 50 percent.

USSF ‘D’ coaching course since 2000. She was an assistant coach for the Tennessee ODP from 19992000. Henson also served as head coach of the North Carolina Olympic Development Program from 1995-98. She was an assistant coach for the N.C. ODP from 1994-95.

Henson arrived in Johnson City after a four-year stint from 1995-98 as head coach of High Point University’s soccer program. While at High Point, Henson led the team to back-to-back CVAC tournament championship appearances in her first two seasons and reached the championship game each year. She also helped the team move from NAIA competition to NCAA Division II and finally to NCAA Division I. In addition to her coaching duties at High Point, Henson served as the Athletic Department’s Senior Women’s Administrator from 1997-99. Prior to becoming the head coach at High Point, Henson served as an assistant coach for the Panthers men’s and women’s teams from 1994-95.

Before transitioning into her coaching career, Henson played 10 years of club soccer in her hometown of Dallas, Texas, and played six years for the North Texas ODP. She attended

UNC-Greensboro where she was a four-year starter. In her four seasons, the Spartans were ranked No. 1 in the Division II poll in the fall of 1990 and were ranked as high as No. 17 in the Division I poll in 1991. She graduated in 1994 with a degree in psychology. The former Heather Puckett, Henson is married to Chris Henson, ETSU’s Assistant Director of the Buccaneer Athletic Scholarship Association. The couple lives in Johnson City, Tenn., with their daughter Callie.

In addition to her collegiate coaching career, Henson has been active in coaching organizations including the National Soccer Coaches Association and the United States Soccer Federation and holds her NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a USSF ‘B’ license. Henson is also a member of the NSCAA National Ranking Committee as the A-Sun voting member. Also, along with then associate head coach Andy Stoots, Henson was recently named as a current USYS Region III staff coach. Currently, Henson serves as the Tennessee ODP Soccer Staff Head Coach and has instructed in the

John Conlon Assistant Coach First Season University of New Hampshire ‘06 John Conlon enters his first season as an assistant on the ETSU women’s soccer coaching staff. Conlon will work primarily with the goalkeepers, and will be the recruiting coordinator for the Bucs. Conlon came to ETSU from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he served as an assistant on the Minutewomen coaching staff, helping UMass to a fifth-place tie after being picked to finish last in the Atlantic 10 conference. The 2009 conference tournament appearance for UMass was the first since 2004. Before heading to UMass, Conlon spent the spring of 2009 as a volunteer assistant coach on the women’s soccer staff at Northeastern University in Boston. Conlon was also an assistant coach at his alma mater, University of New Hampshire, from 2006-08 after spending time as a volunteer assistant from 2005-06. While with the Wildcats, Conlon served as the team’s goalkeeping specialist among other duties. Conlon was a part of the UNH staff that was named the America East Coaching Staff of the Year in 2007. With Conlon on the sidelines, the Wildcats advanced to the 2006 America East semifinals after a fifth-place finish in the league for the second straight season. In 2007, Conlon helped guide UNH to a firstplace tie and a share of the America East regular season championship as the Wildcats advanced to the conference tournament championship match. UNH also placed third in the conference in 2008 with Conlon on the staff. Prior to his time as an assistant coach at New Hampshire, Conlon served as a strength and conditioning intern with the Wildcats from 2004-06 and worked with many of the UNH athletic teams, including track & field and men’s and women’s tennis. Conlon spent the summer of 2006 in Winchester, Mass., as an intern with Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning. Conlon has earned his NSCAA Advanced Regional Certification and NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma. A former Director of Goalkeeping at the UNH Women’s Soccer Camp for two years, Colon has worked a number of camps.

Kristi Evans Assistant Coach First Season Oakland University ‘10 Kristi Evans enters her first season as an assistant on the ETSU women’s soccer coaching staff. Evans spent the 2009-10 season as an assistant coach with Alma College where she helped with training and recruiting and worked with the goalkeepers. In addition to coaching at Alama College, Evans also coached the U-10 and U-11 TNT Dynamite club teams and the Lasher High School girls team. Evans earned her Coaching D Liscense in June of 2008 and NSCAA Level I & II Goalkeeper Diplomas in 2010. A standout at Oakland University, Evans was named team captain from 2006-08. While playing for the Golden Grizzlies, Evans received firstteam all conference honors in 2006 and 2008, and was also named to the Summit League All-Tournament Team in 2007 and 2008. Evans helped guide Oakland to four Summit League Championships and two NCAA tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007. Evans graduated with a B.S. in Wellness, Health Promotion and Injury Prevention from Oakland University in 2010, and is working toward a master’s in sports administration degree at ETSU.

Jeff Schneider Sports Information Assistant

Jeff enters his fourth year as an assistant in the ETSU media relations department. The Louisiana native is the primary contact for men’s and women’s soccer and baseball, and assists with game-day operations for all of ETSU’s athletic programs. While at ETSU, Schneider has spent time as the volleyball contact, and helped to represent the ETSU baseball program on a national level, publicizing the 2010 All-America campaign of Paul Hoilman. Schneider is a 2007 graduate of LSU, where he earned a B.A. in mass communication with a concentration in public relations. While attending LSU, Schneider worked as a student intern in the LSU Sports Information department, helping with releases and events. Schneider was the women’s soccer contact for LSU from 2004-05 and the assistant track and field contact from 2002-06. Schneider helped with the production of multiple media guides and postseason guides while at LSU. Schneider assisted with the 2004 NCAA Women’s Basketball First and Second Round, 2004 NCAA Mideast Regional Track and Field Championships, 2003, 2004 and 2005 NCAA Baseball Baton Rouge Regionals and the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Baseball Baton Rouge Super Regionals, all hosted by LSU. In his time with LSU, Schneider also assisted with the 2005 Capital One Bowl and 2003 SEC Baseball Tournament. Other major events covered include the 2004 and 2005 Texas Relays, 2004 SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships, 2005 New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational and the 2005 Millrose Games.

Brian Johnston Director of Athletic Medicine

Brian is entering his seventh year as Director of Athletic Medicine after serving three years as the Assistant Athletic Trainer for ETSU. As a former graduate of the NATA-approved Athletic Training Curriculum, Brian has been associated with East Tennessee State University for over ten years. After graduating from ETSU in 1998, Brian worked with Southeastern Sports Medicine in Asheville, N.C., and then at Greenwood High School where he taught Anatomy and Physiology and oversaw the school’s athletic training needs. Brian rejoined the ETSU Athletic Training Staff in 2001 as the Assistant Athletic Trainer for Football where he oversaw the Buccaneer Football team for three years. During that time, he assisted the sports medicine staff with the Pittsburgh Steelers in mini-camp sessions. In 2003, Brian became the interim head athletic trainer and interim Clinic Director for the Jerry Robertson BucSports Athletic Medicine Center. Brian serves as the primary athletic trainer for baseball while overseeing the entire Sport Medicine program. He also has responsibilities for men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s golf, and women’s golf. The Knoxville, TN, native received his Master in Sport Science degree from the United States Sports Academy in 2002 and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training in 1998. He is a certified instructor for CPR/ AED for the professional Rescuer. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Southeastern Athletic Trainers’ Association, and Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society. Brian currently resides in Johnson City and is married to the former Sherri Saltys (ETSU ‘98) and has two children, Derek and Isaac.

Summers-Taylor

Summers-Taylor Stadium

Located on the west side of the university campus is the home field of the Bucs, Summers-Taylor Stadium. The stadium, which debuted in 2008, was made possible by the considerable contribution made by the Summers family. The Summers’ daughter Lena Summers was a member of the ETSU women’s soccer team from 1998-2002. Summers-Taylor Stadium’s west side houses permanent stands that hold 1,000 fans, with an open area berm placed on the east side of the field. It is equipped with a press box, hospitality suites and an electronic scoreboard/message center. The press box houses both the scoreboard operating system and the public address system as well as room to comfortably seat over 10 members of the media. The men’s team will be entering its third season at the state-of-the-art facility, while the women’s team will enjoy its fourth season at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

Summers-Taylor

The facility includes a Bermuda-style natural grass playing field equipped with a state-of-the-art drainage system capable of removing up to six inches of water within a 24-hour period. Lighting for the stadium is expected to be finished in September so that teams can play well into the night. There is also a concession stand for the fans and restrooms for both men and women on the north side of the stadium. The largest crowd to attend an ETSU home outdoor athletic event at the stadium was 1,311 on Aug. 29, 2008, for the first-ever menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soccer match against Appalachian State. There is also a practice field located behind the grandstand, with the addition of a second practice field to be completed in the near future. ETSU athletics has an outstanding field crew who keeps the facility in great condition, making the complex one of the premier collegiate soccer venues in the country.

Without a doubt the most used piece of equipment in the athletic training facility is the Hydroworx polar plunge pool. It is used by all teams on a daily basis post practice and used by all injured athletes under the care of the athletic training staff. Along with the cold pool is a Hydroworx 500 therapy pool. This pool has a treadmill as part of the floor and two cameras mounted on the front and side of the pool. This gives visual feedback to the athlete and athletic trainer during treatment.

The general athletic training area is approximately 3500 square feet and services the day-to-day practice and competition preparation for the entire athletic department. With 17 treatment tables, various modalities and a large exercise area the general athletic training area allows multiple teams to receive treatment at the same time. Attached to the general athletic training area are three private rooms. Each room is equipped with a treatment table and combination therapy unit as well as one other distinguishing characteristic. The “Normal” room is for IV therapy, the “College” room is for casting and splinting, and the “University” room is for traction.

BUCSPORTS The Jerry Robertson BucSports Athletic Medicine Center serves as both the health center for all Buccaneer Athletics as well as an outpatient health center for the ETSU campus and Johnson City community. Athletic trainers, physical therapists, and a primary care sports medicine physicians help to provide a comprehensive medical program to all patients. Completed in 2001, BucSports provides a variety of opportunities for physical therapy students, medical students and resident physicians interested in the field of sports medicine.

Strength and Conditioning

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology, Leisure and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research. The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport teams 2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to coaches regarding coaching practices. 3. Advising on the Training Process 4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 26th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual or team off-season conditioning program.

Not only are time management skills and self-discipline musts, but also dedication and commitment are needed from each individual student to maintain eligibility and progress toward graduation. ETSU Athletics provides many resources to assist the student-athlete in achieving his/her academic goals and in preparing ultimately for life after college. The staff not only advises students in scheduling classes and making academic progress, but offers support in the areas of group and individual tutoring, academic mentoring, career and personal counseling and life skills programming. Student-athletes have access to a state-of-the-art computer center that features Dell flat-screen computers, wireless Internet technology and study hall facilities that are open after hours during the week and on Sundays for their use. ETSU is also an active participant in the NCAA CHAMPS program. Through this model, student-athletes are offered a wide range of seminars designed to help them adjust to college life, develop as individuals and prepare for their careers after graduation. The Humphreys Center for student-athletes is the home of our academic support services. Camp Page Buccaneer Soccer School for Girls

Soccer Camp The highly-talented ETSU coaching staff holds day and residential camps each year in June and July for athletes ages 5-18. The day camp is perfect for beginners and for those who want to improve upon their technical skills.

Residential Campers Residential camp is a competitive and fun environment that provides the ultimate soccer experience for players of all levels and positions. Curriculum will focus on technical and functional training, and provide the serious soccer player with an opportunity to improve their present skills and to effectively apply their abilities in match situations

Day Camp Day camp is designed to instruct players in individual skills and tactics in an enjoyable learning environment. Camp curriculum is tailored to the age and skill level of each camper, with a great mix of learning and FUN!

Goalkeeper Training Specialized goalkeeping sessions will be available at all camps. Tuition is the same as corresponding camp session. Training will focus on the goalkeeping fundamentals and tactics, while providing an opportunity to put into practice what they learn during their specialized training.
