Season Preview Coaches Players Season Review

Coming off of a 19-13 season a year ago, the 2008 volleyball squad will feature a young team that will look to maintain the level of success that head coach Lindsey Devine has had since taking over the program in 2003. The 2007 season also saw several records fall as Kaena Apana had an outstanding season, breaking three A-Sun conference records and five ETSU records. Callie Kiselich also became the all-time leader in kills at ETSU, shattering Jen Sartor’s record by 55 with 1,420. The Buccaneers will have to replace four seniors including a pair of All-Atlantic Sun performers, as Apana was named 2007 Defensive Player of the Year and Kiselich received Second Team honors as a middle blocker. With the loss of three underclassmen in the off-season and injuries to two of the returning players, the Bucs expect the incoming class to contribute more than anticipated.

Opponents

Coach Devine is bringing in an excellent class of freshmen that include standouts Jen Neice, Jamie Stancliff and McKayla Barber. Each newcomer is expected to see action this season. ETSU returns a young core that saw playing time in 2007. The top returners from last season include Amanda Youell, Kristan Provchy and Lauren Baufield. In her first year with the Bucs, Youell earned A-Sun Player of the Week honors, but was sidelined for part of the season with an injury. Provchy and Baufield each saw valuable playing time for ETSU, helping the team earn the second seed in the ASun tournament.

History This is ETSU

With no seniors on the team this year, many of the juniors and sophomores will have to step up as leaders both on and off the court. With the injuries suffered and the loss of four starters from last season, there will be several position battles during the preseason. Each position has several talented candidates who could fight for a starting role. “I have high expectations for this squad,” said Devine. “We had a successful spring where we adjusted to some changes in the lineup. With the addition of these strong freshmen, this team will continue to be a top contender in the conference.” With ETSU returning seven players from last year’s squad which earned the second seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, the Bucs look to build on their recent success. The Buccaneers will set their eyes on capturing the team’s second regular season conference crown in the last three years as well as search for the programs’ first-ever trip to the NCAAs. While Devine’s club returns a core group of players from a year ago, she also retains a pair of talented assistants. Returning for their third season are Tammi Fries and Rachel Cooper, who will help coach Devine in coaching the team to perform well on and off of the court.

2008 Season Yearbook

The Bucs face a new challenge in 2008 as the conference schedule has changed to a double round robin format, increasing the number of matches from 11 to 20. Last season the Bucs went undefeated at home in conference play, extending their home conference win streak to 11 matches. Under coach Devine, ETSU has recorded an impressive home conference record of 22-9 since she took over the reins in 2003. This year’s young squad will get tested early with tournaments at East Carolina and Marshall before starting conference matches. Facing tough opponents like Tennessee, Western Kentucky, and Marshall will help the young squad gain valuable experience early in the season. Atlantic Sun play begins earlier than usual due to the new league format. Teams like Belmont, tournament champion Lipscomb, Jacksonville and regular season champion Florida Gulf Coast are expected to challenge the Bucs as the favorites to win the Atlantic Sun.

Sixth Season

Players Season Review

Lindsey Devine begins her sixth season at the helm of the ETSU volleyball program, after leading the Buccaneers to a third straight Atlantic Sun Tournament appearance in 2007. Under Devine’s watch, the 2007 squad finished at 19-13 overall, the third winning season in a row for the Bucs. The 2007 season also saw several ETSU and A-Sun records fall as Kaena Apana had an outstanding season, breaking three A-Sun conference records and five ETSU records. Callie Kiselich also became the all-time leader in kills at ETSU shattering Jen Sartor’s record by 55, finishing with 1,420.

Opponents

Devine led ETSU to non-conference victories over such schools as Chattanooga, UNC Asheville, Radford (twice) and Central Florida in 2007. The team was nearly flawless at home during the season, posting a 9-1 record in Brooks Gym, until the Bucs had a 13-game home winning streak snapped by Liberty.

History This is ETSU

The 2007 squad rolled past Atlantic Sun competition, dropping just two games in 11 matches against conference foes, and had a perfect home stretch as the Bucs did not lose a conference game in Brooks Gym. Devine had four Bucs earn All-Conference honors as Apana was named the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year, while Kiselich was a SecondTeam selection. Desiree Dyck and Laura Waddell earned A-Sun All-Freshman honors. In her five years as head coach, Devine has accumulated a total of 78 victories, along with four conference tournament appearances. Her players excelled off the court in 2007 as eight players earned Atlantic Sun All-Academic honors, including returnees Whitney Cogburn, Desiree Dyck, Erin Ryan, Amanda Youell and Kristan Provchy, along with departed players Kaena Apana, Callie Kiselich and Laura Waddell. Senior Marissa Mortensen achieved a 4.0 overall GPA. Devine’s Bucs accrued a team GPA of 3.02 for the 2007-08 academic year, ranking among the best in the ETSU athletic department. Devine saw her first player reach the professional ranks in 2007 as former standout Crystal Palmer spent the year playing with AOK Osijek, Akademski (Academic) Odbojkaski (Women’s Volleyball) Klub (Club) of Osijek in Croatia. Devine is USA Volleyball CAP 1 and Increased Mastery and Professional Application of Coaching Theory (IMPACT) certified, and has served as a court coach with the USA Volleyball High

Without a doubt the most used piece of equipment in the athletic training facility is the Hydroworx polar plunge pool. It is used by all teams on a daily basis post practice and used by all injured athletes under the care of the athletic training staff. Along with the cold pool is a Hydroworx 500 therapy pool. This pool has a treadmill as part of the floor and two cameras mounted on the front and side of the pool. This gives visual feedback to the athlete and athletic trainer during treatment.

Strength and Conditioning Season Preview Coaches Opponents History This is ETSU

The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport teams 2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to coaches regarding coaching practices. 3. Advising on the Training Process 4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 24th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual or team off-season conditioning program.

Season Review

The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology Leisure and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research.
