David E. Walker Director of Track & Field B.S. ETSU 1958 M.A. ETSU 1962 Not every school can claim a living legend on its campus, but the students and faculty of East Tennessee State University can. David E. Walker, who most often answers to “Coach,” has been at ETSU for 46 years. During Walker’s tenure as head coach at East Tennessee State, nine different men have served as president of the United States, while ETSU has seen six presidents and nine athletic directors. Walker has been busy in his 46 years at the helm of the Buccaneer program, producing 30 All-Americans along with countless other track and cross country stars in the Atlantic Sun, Southern, and Ohio Valley conferences. In 2006, Walker’s squad made some noise in its first season in the Atlantic Sun Conference, claiming the inaugural A-Sun Conference Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship in Johnson City, Tenn. Five Buccaneers garnered conference titles at the indoor meet, with Walker adding to his hardware by receiving the Coach of the Year Award. The success continued during the 2006 outdoor season, as the men finished third at the conference championships, earning five more conference titles and qualifying sprinter James Rainer for a spot in the NCAA Championships. High jumper Anna Marie Ricciardi and Rainer also competed in the NCAA Regional in Knoxville, Tenn. The very next season ETSU repeated the task. However, this time Walker’s Buccaneer squad did something that has never been accomplished in school history, which was make it a clean sweep in both the indoor and outdoor men’s conference championships. The fun all started during the third weekend of February, when Walker’s men’s team earned back-to-back indoor conference titles for the first time in school history. At the meet, the Bucs tallied 127 points on the weekend, and bagged a total of 13 medals, including three individual first-place finishes. With the win, ETSU claimed the “Coach of the Year” honors, as Walker won the award for the second straight season. Four months later the Bucs proved how strong they were on the outdoor track by winning their first outdoor crown. During the meet the men collected 20 medals, including seven gold as 17 different ETSU athletes scored points during the championship run. At the post-race ceremony Walker won his second Coach of the Year award on the season. With the outdoor title, ETSU won its eighth conference championship crown, marking the most titles won in one athletic year. The 2008-09 season was a year of firsts for coach Walker as he added a new bullet point to his resume by winning his first career Triple Crown – capturing the conference crowns in cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The fall of 2008 was a special one for Walker and his men’s cross country team as the Bucs kicked off the first leg of winning the triple crown – a first for the longtime ETSU leader. On November 1, the Buccaneers ended Belmont’s six-year run as conference champions, as junior Kenneth Rotich led ETSU across the finish line. The Bucs brought home ETSU’s first conference crown since 1996 and its 21st overall cross country championship. Rotich – who won the individual race – was named Atlantic Sun Runner of the Year, while Walker also took home Coach of the Year honors. In total, five Buccaneer runners were named all-conference at the post-race ceremony. ETSU also enjoyed a South Regional ranking of sixth during the historic cross country season. Then, in the winter, Walker added more hardware to his trophy case as the Bucs won the indoor conference championship for the third time in the last four years – marking the fifth time Walker led ETSU to an indoor championship. In addition to winning Coach of the Year honors, Walker saw distance runner Ben Ronoh

The Triple Crown was completed in May when the Bucs hoisted the outdoor crown for the second time since joining the A-Sun down in Jacksonville. Once again Ronoh was named Most Outstanding Track Performer, while Walker’s distance crew proved to be a dominant force in helping ETSU win the championships. The Bucs’ distance runners finished 1-thru-4 in the 5000m, and placed first, second and third in the 10000m. During his tenure, Walker has developed a number of world-class runners, including Kevin Johnson, a nine-time All-American; Seamus Power, a five-time All-American; and Robert Rovere, a four-time All-American. Walker also coached Ray Flynn, who became one of the five top milers in the world, and Neil Cusack, the 1972 NCAA cross country national champion and the winner of the Boston Marathon in 1974. Walker has recruited student-athletes from all over the globe, but perhaps is most famous for establishing a fine tradition of Irish runners at ETSU. His most famous team, the “Irish Brigade,” took second place at the 1972 NCAA Cross Country Championships. The squad, comprised of five Irishmen (Neil Cusack, Ed Leddy, P.J. Leddy, Ray McBride, and Kevin Breen) earned ETSU’s highest national ranking in the sport. Walker’s 1975 squad finished fifth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and won the U.S. Track and Field Federation (USTAFF) Championship. Every member of the team earned All-America honors. Since 1969, Walker’s men’s teams have won 22 conference championships, finished second seven times and third once. His squads have finished in the top-10 11 times. Walker has groomed three Olympians (for Ireland) in Flynn, Ed Leddy, and Cusack. Leddy and Cusack both competed in the 1972 Olympics while Flynn competed in 1980 and 1984. During Walker’s illustrious career the ETSU’s women’s program has won three Southern Conference Championship titles. While he has been head coach, the ETSU program has produced All-America distance runners Kim Bird, Michelle Gregg, and Catherine Berry. Additionally, the program has seen the development of All-American Shelli Clendenon in the heptathlon Head coach Dave Walker receiving his and All-American Angie Barker, an coach of the year honor. Indoor NCAA Champion in the shot put. Walker has not only coached athletes with impressive track records, he has an outstanding record himself. Walker has earned some 20-plus Coach-of-the-Year honors and been named District Coach-of-the-Year 10 times. Walker’s squad has not only dominated the Southern Conference, but has made a name for ETSU in the NCAA district. He carried his cross country team to 14 consecutive national championship appearances from 1970 to 1983, an NCAA record for a coach at the time. ETSU has competed as a team at the event a total of 16 times. Off the track, Walker served on the NCAA Track and Field Committee for seven years including a five-year term as chairman. In honor of Walker’s hard work and dedication to ETSU, the East Tennessee State University track in the Memorial Center was named the David E. Walker Track in January of 1995. Prior to the dedication, he was honored by his present and former athletes and colleagues at a roast. In the fall of 2003, Walker was honored with a certificate of appreciation from the NCAA Division I track and field coaches association for his outstanding contribution to track and field and was inducted into the U.S. Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame. His first paid coaching job was at Chamblee High School in Atlanta, where he coached track and the offensive line in football. He returned to ETSU to finish a master’s degree in 1962. In 1963, he accepted the head coaching job in track and field for the Buccaneers.

B uccaneers C oaching S taff Michelle Byrne Associate Head Coach B.S. Arkansas 1989

Michelle Byrne enters her eighth year at East Tennessee State, including her fourth season as the Associate Head Coach. Byrne is responsible for assisting with all programs including the women’s cross country team, as well as both the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams. She is also responsible for recruiting and academic services. In her years at ETSU Byrne has coached several athletes to all-conference honors, helped produce a Southern Conference Female Athlete-of-the-Year, and instructed an academic All-America cross country team. The past three track and field seasons have been the most memorable for coach Byrne since arriving at ETSU in the summer of 2002, as all of her hard work in recruiting and coaching paid off. In 2006, the men’s indoor track and field team accomplished something that has never been done before in Buccaneer history, by claiming the 2006 and 2007 Atlantic Sun crowns. Then the 2007 outdoor squad made it a clean sweep as it won the conference title in May 2007, marking the first outdoor crown in school history. Things continued to grow for coach Byrne and the Bucs, as ETSU again accomplished a new feat in school history – winning the Triple Crown in 2008-09. The Buccaneer men’s cross country team captured the crown in October, while the track and field squad hoisted the A-Sun trophies during the indoor and outdoor campaigns. Meanwhile, as the Buccaneer men’s squad was achieving new heights, Byrne was also busy coaching track standout and All-American Heidi Dahl on the women’s side. Dahl, who became the first ETSU female All-American since 2000 in the 1500m, quickly made a name for herself in the Buccaneer record books. Dahl, who appeared in both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track Championships, currently holds the record in the indoor mile and outdoor 1500m. In addition to Dahl, Byrne also coached four other ETSU sprinters to the NCAA Mid-east Regional. Mike James qualified in the 110m hurdles, Duronal Monal in the 100 and 200m, while Nae-Nae Bailey and Judy Johnson represented the ETSU women in the sprints. At the 2007 indoor conference championships, Byrne saw sprinter Chris Harrison set a new conference mark in the 400-meters, finishing with a championship time of 50.28. She also coached Derek Carey and Johnny Tucker to all-conference honors as well. On the women’s side Byrne saw five athletes receive all-conference awards, including Jenny Knox’s school record time of 24.50 in the 200-meters. Four months later at the outdoor meet, Byrne’s sprinters shined again. James Rainer, Derek Carey and Johnny Tucker made it a clean seep in the 100- and 200-meter dash, finishing both events in the order they appear. The trio of sprinters along with freshman Chris Harrison also won gold in the 4x100-meter relay; Harrison also took the top spot in the 400 event. Like the men, the ETSU women sprinters ran like bullets at the outdoor meet, as senior Jenny Knox and sophomore Nae-Nae Bailey each won medals in the 100-meters. Each set personal-bests in the event as Knox won gold and Bailey took home bronze. Just like Knox set the school record in the 200 during the indoor campaign, Bailey made sure she would etch her name into the record books by setting the school mark in the outdoor event (24.10). For the second straight season Byrne coached Anna Marie Ricciardi (high jump) and Rainer (100-meter) to the NCAA Regional in 2007; she directed the men’s 4x100-meter relay team and Jenny Knox (100-meter) to the regional as well. In 2006, Byrne saw 13 male athletes named all-conference, which is the most in her tenure at ETSU. The most notable athlete out of the group was sprinter James Rainer, who became the first ETSU athlete to compete in the NCAA Championships since 2000. Byrne coached Rainer to four conference championships in 2006, as he won

the 60- and the 200-meters at the indoor meet, and the 100- and 200-meters at the outdoor competition. Also under Byrne’s watch was Anna Marie Ricciardi who competed with Rainer at the NCAA Regional last season. Not only did these two athletes shine on the track level, but they also showed success in the classroom, by being named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) All-Academic Team. Rainer joined Johnny Tucker, Mike Wright and Tyler Woodruff in a gold medal 4x100-meter relay performance in the 2006 Outdoor conference championships. On the women’s side Jenny Knox and Cagney ‘Nae-Nae’ Bailey highlighted the sprint group at the outdoor conference meet, scoring in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Knox grabbed the silver medal in the 100, with a time of 11.98, while Bailey followed in fourth with a personal-best 12.12. In 2007, Byrne helped coach Jenny Knox to her second straight NCAA Regional, as well as guided the women’s 4x100-meter relay team to Fayettville, Ark. Knox eventually finished the season ranked 47th in the 100m, while the relay team received a ranking of 52nd. In addition, Byrne coached Duronal Monal (100m), Judy Johnson (60m), Zach Titman (Indoor 200m), and the women’s 4x100-meter relay (outdoor) to conference championships. Since Byrne arrived in the summer of 2002, there have been 31 Buccaneer athletes named to all-conference squads, 12 individual conference champions (31 total champions) and seven members who competed at the NCAA Regionals. In 2005 Nichola Cornish swept away both the indoor and outdoor 400-meter conference titles and Ricciardi earned her first conference high jump title. Kim Simmons, Kristen Truman and Ricciardi all qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Mid-East Regionals in 2004. Simmons won the 2004 indoor conference title in the 60 meters and 800. Byrne saw a trio of her runners win conference titles in 2003, as Simmons, Vernon and Cheryl Howard all won gold medals in their respective events. Howard took home both the indoor and outdoor title in the high jump. From 1997 to 2000 Byrne worked as an assistant at the University of Illinois. While at Illinois, Byrne led the Illini cross country team to its highest finish in six years at the conference meet in 2000. Illinois finished fifth in the Midwest Region, narrowly missing an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships. Three Illini earned All-Region honors, the highest number ever in one year for the program. She also coached two runners to All-America status. Byrne also served as an assistant track coach for men and women at ETSU from 1992-95. An excellent evaluator of talent, Byrne was the head recruiter for both the men’s and women’s track and cross country teams. Under Byrne, several Buccaneers achieved individual honors. Michelle Gregg qualified for the NCAA 800 meters on two occasions and Mary Jo Ferrigan provisionally qualified for the 10,000. In 1995, Jeff Horton earned All-America honors in the 55 meters while Shelli Clendenon became the third female in ETSU history to earn All-America accolades, doing so in the heptathalon. In addition, Byrne coached six NCAA qualifiers, including Deleventie Brown in the 55-meter hurdles. Byrne has served ETSU in many different capacities. She served as the head women’s track and field coach at ETSU for two seasons. While with the Buccaneers, Byrne led ETSU to the school’s first-ever Southern Conference Indoor Championship in 1995 and the conference outdoor title in 1996. She also guided the Buccaneers to second-place finishes at the 1996 SoCon Indoor Championships and the 1996 conference cross country championships. Byrne earned SoCon outdoor Coach-of-the-Year honors in 1996 and was the conference’s Coach-of-the-Year for the 1995 indoor season. Byrne graduated from the University of Arkansas with a B.S. in Administrative Management. She was a member of the Razorbacks’ nationally ranked cross country squads from 1984-88. Byrne was a key member of her Arkansas squad, as the team finished ninth at the 1987 NCAA Cross Country Championships, 10th at the 1986 championships and 13th at the 1984 meet. Following graduation, Byrne worked as an assistant coach for Arkansas from 1989-92, where Byrne joined with the Lady Razorback head coach Lance Harter in guiding the Arkansas cross country team to an NCAA second-place finish in 1991 and a sixth-place finish in 1990. The squad also won the SEC title in 1991. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Byrne was ranked as one of the top Irish junior cross country runners and ran for the Irish national distance team from 1981-83. In 1980, 1981 and 1982, Byrne finished third in the 800 meters at the Irish National Championships.

B uccaneers C oaching S taff Meg Stone Assistant Coach Throws B.S. Arizona 1984 Meg Stone began her coaching career at the University of Arizona in 1984. Stone came to the USA from her native Scotland to take up a scholarship in track and field. During her tenure at the University of Arizona she won seven national titles in the shot and discus at the NCAA Division 1 level. Meg still holds the NCAA Division 1 national records in the shot put (18.99/63ft 4ins) and the discus (67.48/221ft 3ins). After an illustrious career in track and field she took the position of Head Strength and Conditioning coach at the University of Arizona to become the first-ever female Head Strength and Conditioning coach at a Division 1 football-playing institution. Meg was Director of the full program but particularly football, baseball and basketball. From 1984 to 1993 she also coached the women’s track and field team, her specialty was the throwing events. During the 1991 season when Meg coached Carla Garrrett to double national championships in the shot and discus, she became one of a few individuals to have been a double national champion and to have coached a double national champion at the Division 1 level. Meg then moved to Texas Tech University to take the position of Director of Strength and Conditioning. Having spent three very profitable years in Lubbock culminating in the football team having its first-ever appearance in the Cotton Bowl, Meg moved back into coaching Track and Field at Appalachian State University, working with the throwers and sprinters. In 1999 she moved back to her native Scotland to be appointed the National High Performance Coach Director for Track and Field. In this position her duties included working with national UK athletics. She was appointed to be one of the coaches to lead the UK Team in the European Championships and also lead a team of coaches in preparation for the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England. She also had coaching duties in Sydney, Australia, and the World Championships in Seville, Spain. In her second year of ETSU coaching, her freshman recruits re-wrote the record books in the Men’s Shot, Men’s Weight, Men and Women’s Hammer and Women’s Discus. Her freshman male thrower, Jarrod Burton, won the A-Sun Conference in the Shot and placed in the Hammer, Javelin and Discus. Her female recruit, Zachlynn Blackburn, won both the Discus and the Hammer in the A- Sun Conference. As a result of these accomplishments they were named Male and Female Freshmen of the Year in the Conference. During the 2010 indoor and outdoor track season, the throws program consisted of four women and five men. From these nine throwers there have been 43 personal bests in all events – showing great progress in the throws group.

Eli Sunquist Assistant Coach Horizontal/Vertical Jumps B.S., M.A. Charlotte Eli Sunquist enters his second season as an assistant track and field coach at East Tennessee State University. Sunquist will continue to work with all the male and female field athletes, with emphasis on the vertical and horizontal jumps as well as the multi-event athletes. Sunquist brings an excellent track record to the Buccaneer program, both as a coach and an athlete. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native spent the past two years coaching the Charlotte 49ers, his alma mater, where he supervised all the male and female field event athletes. Under his watch, Sunquist qualified six horizontal jumpers to the NCAA Regional meet and saw 10 of his athletes win Atlantic 10 conference crowns. The most notable athlete Sunquist assisted and trained was international triple jumper Allen Simms – who was ranked as high as 21st in the world. In just his first season with the Bucs, he helped the jumpers and multi event athletes to four individual conference championships, two conference records, and 10 all-conference performances. Sunquist was also able to help Nic Chernikow break the school record in the heptathlon and help Josh Cloyd win ETSU’s first men’s triple jump conference championship in the history of the program. In addition, he helped the men’s team win both the indoor and outdoor conference championship, having his jumpers contribute 57 points to the indoor campaign and 44 points to the outdoor campaign. “Not only has Eli had success in coaching track and field, but he was a top athlete while competing at Charlotte,” commented Dave Walker. “With his experiences and knowledge of the sport, he can really help our athletes reach the next level.” During his time competing for the 49er track and field team, Sunquist built quite an impressive resume in the triple jump. He was a three-time NCAA Regional Qualifier, two-time Atlantic 10 Conference medalist, named all-conference twice in Conference USA, and won a pair of A-10 team championship rings in both the indoor and outdoor season. Sunquist also shined in the classroom, where he was named to the U.S. Track & Field Coaches All-Academic Team and was also on the Dean’s List. In May 2008, Sunquist received his Master of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from Charlotte, where he conducted a thesis on U.S. women’s triple jump. Sunquist is a member of the National Pole Vault Coaches Association and United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association. He is also USATF level 1 certified and Level II certified in the jumps. He and his wife Tara, a former UNF volleyball standout, reside in Johnson City.

Several honors have come Meg’s way in the past three years. In 2007, Meg received the “Legends in the Field Award” from the Collegiate Strength Coaches Association. Then in 2009, she was presented with the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Dr. Mike Stone, her husband, is the Director of the Sport Science Lab at ETSU and the strength coach with the throwing events.

B uccaneers L egends Angie Barker (1987-89)

A 1989 graduate of ETSU, Angie Barker earned All-America status by capturing the 1988 NCAA indoor shot put title. She claimed three SoCon shot put crowns during her two years at ETSU, the 1988 and 1989 indoor championships and the 1989 outdoor title. Barker also garnered 1988 Strength and Conditioning All-America accolades and qualified for the 1988 Olympic Trials before suffering a knee injury.

Kim Bird (1981-84)

Kim Bird ran for the Buccaneers from 1981-1984, and is the holder of four school records. Her indoor marks in the 1,500 meters (4:47.01), the 3,000 meters (9:18.95) and the 5,000 meters (16:25.10) still stand in the record book, as does her outdoor mark in the 10,000 meters of 34:41.12. Also a member of the cross country squad during her time at ETSU, Bird was selected as an All-American in 1984.

Ollan Cassell (1957)

Though he only attended ETSU for one year, Ollan Cassell made a major impact on the Buccaneer Track and Field program. In just his fourth meet of the 1957 campaign, Cassell registered a 100-yard dash time of 9.7 seconds. Later that season at the Tennessee Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, Cassell attracted international attention when he ran a 9.4 in the 100-yard dash and a 200yard dash time of 21.1 seconds. Both times were within onetenth of a second off the world record at that time. Shortly thereafter, he transferred to the University of Houston. In 1964, Cassell anchored the American Olympic 4x400 meter relay team, which captured the gold medal, with a world time of 3:00.7 at the Tokyo games.

Julian Crocker (1948-60)

Crocker spent 12 years as head track and football line coach at ETSU. During his stint with the Bucs, he had the opportunity of coaching some of the finest athletes ever to wear the Blue and Gold. Among the Buccaneer athletes he coached were Hal Morrison, the school’s first All-American; Ollan Cassell, Olympic gold medalist; and Kent Osborne, another track standout. Crocker organized the Tri-Cities Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 1956 and served as director for 10 years.

Neil Cusack (1970-73)

Neil Cusack, the most noted member of the famed “Irish Brigade,” collected numerous national honors during his career at ETSU. Cusack made his first mark on the national

scene in 1971 with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. In 1972, he won the individual title, helping the Buccaneers to a second-place standing, the best ever for an ETSU squad. He finished fourth at the 1973 NCAAs. That same year he received international recognition, winning the prestigious Boston Marathon title. Cusack was also a member of the 1972 and 1976 Irish Olympic teams.

Mark Finucane (1974-77)

A 1979 graduate of ETSU, Mark Finucane was a two-time cross country All-American, won the 1977 Ohio Valley Conference cross country title and was named the OVC cross country Runner of the Year. He garnered All-OVC and NCAA Region III all-district honors four times during his career (’74 ’77) and was the 1975 Tennessee State Intercollegiate Champion. Finucane was a member of the 1977 cross country squad which went undefeated during the regular season and set a still-standing NCAA Region III team record for the lowest point total with 29. He was a member of the USTFF National Cross Country championship squad. In track, he ranked sixth on the world junior list for the three-mile run and the 10,000 meters in 1975 while gaining All-OVC honors in 1975 and 1976. Following his collegiate career, Finucane was named to the United States Cross Country team in 1979 and 1981. He competed in the 1984 Olympic Marathon Trials in his hometown of Buffalo, N.Y., and was the 1984 National 10K Road Race champion. His third-place time of 2:11.55 at the 1984 Houston Marathon was one of the fastest times ever run by an American.

Ray Flynn (1975-79)

A 1979 graduate of ETSU, Ray Flynn has remained an integral part of the university and Johnson City community. He is a member of the East Tennessee Board of Tourism and is a past board member of the ETSU Alumni Association. He played a key role in getting the Dave Walker Scholarship Fund established to help fund the Buccaneer track and field program. While at ETSU in the late 1970s, Flynn set school records in the 1,500 meters (3:44.1) and the mile (4:00.7) indoors and the 1,500 meters (3:37.66) and the mile (3:52.9) outdoors. Those records, set in 1978, still stand today. Flynn was a member of the 1975 squad that won the USTFF Cross Country Championship and earned All-America honors in the process. He was twice named All-American (indoors and outdoors) in 1978 and earned second place in a photo finish Ray Flynn (left) with head coach against Steve Scott in the David E. Walker (right). 1,500 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Also, Flynn was named OVC Athlete of the Year in 1978. A native of Ireland, Flynn represented his homeland at the 1980

Olympics and finished 11th in the 5,000 meters at the 1984 Olympic Games. Flynn’s best time of 3:51.2 in the indoor mile still stands among the best times in the world. He recorded 89 sub-four-minute miles, a feat only a few have accomplished. He is one of a select group of men to have run the mile in under three minutes and 50 seconds, with a time of 3:49.77, which still stands as the Irish record.

The first of ETSU’s long line of distance runners, Kent Osbourne was one of the best runners of his day. Osbourne was an AAU All-American and ran the mile and two-mile events for East Tennessee State University from 1955 to 1958.

Patrick Hauser

Robert Rovere

Another member of ETSU’s 1969 Grantland Rice Bowl Championship team, Patrick Hauser overcame adversity early in his career at ETSU to be a part of that team. As a kicker his first season, Hauser distinguished himself by being the first ETSU kicker to boot three field goals in a single game. After his first season at ETSU, Hauser lost one of his kidneys and his football career appeared to be over. But Hauser was determined and worked his way back onto the team as a kicker and defensive back. In the 1969 season, he played wide receiver for the Bucs and gained 531 yards and scored seven touchdowns, including one in the bowl game, helping the Bucs to a 34-14 win. During his off-season, Hauser competed with the ETSU track and field team in the long jump, javelin and as a member of the 400 meter relay team. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins the following spring and had a chance to make the squad until he suffered a knee injury in the Dolphins’ fifth preseason game. He returned to ETSU the following year and completed his master’s degree in environmental health.

Robert Rovere was ETSU’s first national champion and the first great runner to blossom under the tutelage of ETSU Hall of Fame Coach Dave Walker. Rovere set still-standing East Tennessee State records in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. In 1967, he ran a 9.2 in the 100-yard dash and a 20.4 in the 220-yard dash to win the NCAA College Division title in both events. Rovere was chosen to represent the United States in the 1967 Pan American Games.

(1967-69)

Edward Leddy (1970-74)

A member of the original “Irish Brigade” at ETSU, Edward Leddy was a four-time All American in cross country and track for the Bucs. Leddy also accomplished a rare feat, receiving All-Ohio Valley recognition four times each in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. In 1971, Leddy won the OVC individual cross country title on the way to the first of his three All-America honors. The following year, he helped the Bucs to a secondplace finish at the NCAA Championship, the highest finish ever for ETSU. Leddy is also one of three runners to compete in the Olympics. He represented Ireland in the 1972 and 1976 games. Leddy still holds the ETSU record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, running an 8:35.2 in the spring of 1974.

Adrian Leek (1978-81)

A 1981 graduate of ETSU, Adrian Leek was a three-time AllAmerican while competing for the Bucs. As a freshman in 1978, he won the first of his two Southern Conference cross country titles. In 1980, he captured his second SoCon title and earned All-America honors as the team finished fourth in the nation. On the outdoor track oval, Leek set still-standing ETSU records in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. He was named All-America in track in 1979 and 1981 in the 5,000 meters. In 1979, he earned the SoCon Indoor Athlete-of-the-Year, winning the three-mile, placing second in the two-mile and running on the conference champion distance medley team.

(1955-58)

(1964-67)

Robert Tranbarger (1947-50)

A 1950 graduate of ETSU, Robert Tranbarger was a versatile athlete for the Buccaneers in the late 1940s, excelling in three sports for ETSU. He also played for four ETSU Hall of Famers: Gene McMurray, Jim Mooney, L.T. Roberts and Madison Brooks. He was captain of the football team for three years and was an All-Smoky Mountain Conference selection in both football and baseball. Tranbarger was also a Paul B. Williams Little All-American in 1949. After leaving ETSU, Tranbarger played professional baseball in the Chicago Cubs organization for two years.

Dave Walker (1963 - Present)

A 1958 graduate of East Tennessee State, Walker has been at ETSU for over 40 years. During his tenure as head coach, Walker produced 22 All-Americans along with countless track and cross country stars in the Ohio Valley, Southern and Atlantic Sun conferences. Walker has Dave Walker was inducted into brought in student-athletes the United States Track Coaches from all over the globe, but Association Hall of Fame perhaps is most famous for on Dec. 6, 2004. establishing a fine tradition of Irish runners at ETSU. The Dome has been the home of Buccaneer basketball for the past 30 years. Over the last several seasons “home” has definitely been sweeter for ETSU since the facility was first used in 1977. The Lady Bucs have posted a .776 winning percentage, while also winning 31 of their last 37 conference games inside Memorial Center over the last four years. A couple of times each year, the facility is transformed into a first-class indoor track facility. ETSU annually plays host to an international track meet which has ranked as one of the top indoor track meets on the Grand Prix circuit. The Mini-Dome will also serve as the site for the Atlantic Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships.

In addition, the Dome also serves as the home of the Buccaneer tennis teams in various tournaments and dual matches during the season. The Dome offers players and spectators the comforts of 78-degree temperatures in the winter and cool 68-degree marks in the warm summer months. The climate is maintained by 1,140 tons of air conditioning, provided by the university’s chiller plant and by steam heat from the campus power plant. The facilities housed within the Mini-Dome include the main basketball floor, Gentry Field, two auxiliary basketball courts, a six-lane, 280-meter track, six racquetball/handball courts, seven tennis courts, a rifle range, two gymnasiums, a strength training facility, several locker rooms, and a physical education research laboratory. The offices for most of ETSU’s varsity sports are also housed in the Dome, as well as the athletics administration and media relations offices.

Championships Dancing Again

In 2008-09, the ETSU men’s basketball team continued to build on its long-standing tradition of success, capturing the 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championship. With that victory, the Buccaneers made their eighth trip all-time to the NCAA Tournament, while bringing home the 26th overall championship in program history. More recently, ETSU has now enjoyed four 20-win seasons in the last seven years, having won conference titles in each of those four campaigns.

Back-To-Back

After posting a program-tying fourth consecutive winning season, ETSU women’s basketball made history by making its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2008-09. The Lady Bucs, who boasted the number one seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, defeated Mercer and Jacksonville en route to being tabbed the No. 13 seed in the Berkeley Region. ETSU set a new school record with 16 conference victories and tallied its third straight 20-win season after finishing the campaign at 20-11. Four Lady Bucs were rewarded for their hard work on the court, as Siarre Evans was named the 2009 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, while Latisha Belcher received Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year honors. In addition, TaRonda Wiles was named First All-Conference and Gwen Washington was selected to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team. Meanwhile, Evans also cleaned up at the A-Sun Tournament by being tabbed Tournament MVP and was also named a Finalist on the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team.

Three-peat A year removed from earning its first-ever NCAA Tournament win, the ETSU men’s tennis team continued to dominate play winning its fourth straight A-Sun Regular Season crown, while dropping league rival Stetson 4-2, for its third straight A-Sun Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth. In addition to its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance the No. 61-ranked Bucs swept through the conference awards as head coach Yaser Zaatini was named the 2009 A-Sun Coach of the Year, while senior Enrique Olivares was again named the A-Sun Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and tournament MVP for the second consecutive season. Overall, the Bucs placed six total players on the all-conference teams in addition to running its current A-Sun winning streak to 34 straight wins.

are . . . BLUE The Trifecta

The ETSU men’s cross country/track and field program joined an elite group in 2008-09, as the Bucs were only one of five Division I programs to win the “Triple Crown.” The Bucs began leg one of their quest on the first Saturday in November when ETSU held off Belmont for its first A-Sun crown and 21st overall conference championship. ETSU, who defeated the Bruins by six points (29 to 35), brought its first cross country championship back to Johnson City since winning the crown in 1996. Then, on the third weekend of February, the Bucs completed leg two of the Trifecta run, as ETSU knocked off reigning conference champion Kennesaw State and hoisted the A-Sun Indoor Championship crown for the third time in the last four years. The “Triple Crown” was finally completed in mid-May when the Buccaneer squad overcame many obstacles – and once again – held off Kennesaw State to claim its second outdoor title since joining the league in 2005-06. The ETSU distance runners had a huge hand in winning the championship, as the Bucs went 1-thru-3 in the 5000m and 1-thru-4 in the 10000m.

Redemption Head coach Steve Brooks’ squad returned to the Big Dance for the second time in school history, after winning both the regular season and A-Sun Tournament titles over league rival Stetson. Despite a first-round NCAA Tournament loss to in-state rival and host Tennessee, the Lady Bucs rolled to their best overall season in program history, placing four members on the allconference team, while senior Tara Byrne (MVP), junior Yevgenyia Stupak and sophomore Tara Sheets earned all-tournament honors.

Winning the Michael Stewart

In winning the Freshman of the Year award, Stewart followed in the footsteps of teammates Power and Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) as the third straight Buccaneer to capture the honor. At last month’s A-Sun Championships, he rallied from four strokes down entering the final round to catch and pass fellow freshman, Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume, thanks to three consecutive birdies on his closing nine holes. His win marked the third in a row for a Buccaneer, following Power in 2007 and Shaw in 2008. His win at the A-Sun Championships carried him to a unanimous spot on both the AllAtlantic Sun First-Team and All-Freshman Team.

Tara Byrne

After leading the ETSU women’s tennis team to its second NCAA Tournament appearance senior Tara Byrne received the prestigious Southeast Region ITA/NCAA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The First-Team All-A-Sun member and tournament MVP also became the second player in program history to surpass 100 career wins. Back on April 13, 2009, the local Johnson City native became ETSU’s all-time career wins leader, passing Masha Illina’s mark of 103 victories. Overall the four-time allconference member and team captain left ETSU with 107 career wins, which tops all players in the A-Sun this past season.

Yaser Zaatini

After losing four seniors off of the 2008 Bucs squad head coach Yaser Zaatini responded by leading ETSU through one of the toughest schedules in the entire nation. After coaching ETSU to its sixth straight unbeaten conference season and wins over four ITA-ranked teams, Zaatini was honored for the second straight season as the A-Sun Coach of the Year. Overall, it was Zaatini’s third “Coach of the Year” honor by the A-Sun and fifth overall (SoCon 2004, 2005) The Bucs earned their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance after dropping league foe Stetson, 4-2 for its third straight A-Sun Tournament title.

36 • East Tennessee State University

Yevgenyia Stupak

Stupak continued to impress in her junior season leading the Lady Bucs to a share of their third regular season championship and second A-Sun Tournament title. Overall, Stupak rolled to an impressive 30-6 singles mark, picking up wins against players from 16 ITA-ranked teams. In addition to a remarkable 23-9 doubles record, Stupak was the highest ranked ITA player in the conference, which helped earn her the 2009 A-Sun Women’s Player of the Year award.

Seamus Power

Power, who was part of an ETSU awards sweep as the Freshman of the Year in 2007 (with Warren and Rhys Davies), became the third Buccaneer to win the conference Player of the Year. Power and former teammates Davies (2006-07) and Gareth Shaw (2008) combined to put an ETSU stranglehold on the league’s top individual honor over the last four years. He joins Jacksonville State’s Matias Anselmo as the only two in Atlantic Sun history to win both the Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in a career. The Waterford, Ireland native shared Medalist honors at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational and placed second at the Kauai Collegiate Cup. In addition to the A-Sun honor Power became the eighth person in ETSU men’s golf history to receive All-America honors as he was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.

Fred Warren

The Bucs legendary golf coach picked up his ninth Coach of the Year award in 2009. Overall, the Hall-of-Famer coach has won the A-Sun award twice, to go along with the seven he totaled while in the Southern Conference. Under Warren’s direction the Bucs earned their 18th trip to the NCAA Championships this past May.

Ben Ronoh

ETSU track and field newcomer Ben Ronoh lived up to the hype after helping the Bucs win the “Triple Crown” in 2008-09. The native from Sotik, Kenya was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. At the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships, Ronoh swept the 3000m and 5000m events on the David E. Walker track inside Memorial Center and was named the league’s top performer. The sophomore distance runner made it a clean sweep after winning the steeplechase and finishing second (behind his cousin Kenneth Rotich) in the 5000m and 10000m at the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Fla.

Right Way Enrique Olivares

Overall, Olivares closed out his career as not just one of the top men’s tennis players in program history, but as one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of intercollegiate athletics at ETSU. The second winningest player in school history wrapped up his career with a remarkable 115 wins, including posting an Atlantic Sun Conference record-setting mark of 32-1(.969 winning percentage). The fourtime A-Sun First-Team member and twotime A-Sun Player of the Year, became the highest ranked ITA preseason player in school and league history in 2008 as the No. 9-ranked ITA singles player in the nation. The three-time A-Sun Tournament MVP, again led the Bucs to their fourth straight A-Sun Regular Season title and a third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. A mainstay in the national rankings since arriving in the Tri-Cites, Olivares held 14 career wins against nationally ITA ranked players.

Siarre Evans

Since arriving in Johnson City in the fall of 2006, rising senior Siarre Evans hasn’t disappointed the Lady Buccaneer faithful. After adding Atlantic Sun Freshman Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team and Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team accolades to her resume in her first two seasons, Evans continued to impress in 2008-09. The Griffin, Ga., native, who became only the 16th ETSU player of all-time to reach the 1,000-point club and lead the conference with 16.4 ppg and 10.3 rpg, was named the 2009 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year and Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP. Furthermore, Evans’ stellar play placed her as a finalist on the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team.

Paul Hoilman

After an outstanding freshman season, Hoilman had a career 2008-09 sophomore year as he received numerous postseason awards including being named to the Louisville Slugger All-America Third-Team, the Ping!Baseball All-America Honorable Mention Team and the College Baseball Insider All-America Second-Team. Hoilman received Atlantic Sun All-Conference First-Team recognition and was selected as the A-Sun Player of the Week on April 27. The Johnson City native led the A-Sun in slugging, and finished in the top ten in batting average, on-base percentage, runs scored, RBIs, doubles, home runs, walks and sacrifice flies.

Heidi Dahl

Dahl was an outstanding track and field athlete in 2008-09, as she represented ETSU at both the Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships. The Orem, Utah, native became the first Lady Buccaneer student-athlete to receive All-America honors since 2000 at the Outdoor Championships, as she finished sixth in the 1500m run. In addition, Dahl claimed the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship in the 1500m at Louisville. Dahl, who won the Atlantic Sun Championship in the mile (indoor), 800m (outdoor) and 1500m (outdoor), was also a five-time A-Sun Athlete of the Week winner. The senior runner ran a leg in both the indoor and outdoor conference championship 4x400-meter relay. In total, Dahl contributed for 29 percent of the Lady Bucs’ scoring at the outdoor conference championships and was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at the post-race ceremony.

Kenneth Rotich

Kenneth Rotich, a three-time Cross Country Athlete of the Week winner, was named the Atlantic Sun Runner of the Year after winning the conference championship with a time of 24:34 in Macon, Ga. The native of Nairobi, Kenya helped the Bucs win their 21st cross country title in school history and was the first ETSU runner to win a championship since 1995. In total, Rotich won three races in 2008 and moved his current running total of A-Sun Athlete of the Week honors to six, which marks a new conference best.

Bo Reeder

Reeder came on strong in his freshman season tying the ETSU freshman home run record with 15 in his first year with the Bucs. Reeder was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team. The 2008-09 season saw many impressive feats out of Reeder as he defeated ACC foe Virginia Tech in his first career start, while throwing a complete game and hitting for the cycle in the same week. Reeder also came in to get the save against Tennessee on the road to complete a sweep of the Vols. Reeder was a unanimous selection for the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, was named the A-Sun Player of the Week and made the College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Lineup on March 23.

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology Leisure and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research. The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport teams 2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to coaches regarding coaching practices. 3. Advising on the Training Process 4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 25th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools.
