2008 Inaugural Season Yearbook

S eason Preview Season Preview Coaches

The inaugural season for the ETSU Men’s Soccer program features a young and talented class that will take on the responsibility of establishing the foundations of a new program. 2008 will be a season of learning for the first-year program as the Bucs will have to quickly adapt to the demands of the Division I game, but with a solid incoming recruiting class things are looking up for firstyear head coach Scott Calabrese.

Players This is ETSU Opponents

The Bucs must create an identity and build a culture within the program. They must meet the challenge of quickly becoming a team by developing solidarity, teamwork and friendship on and off the field. Calabrese will demand a culture where players are hardworking, disciplined, and humble, exemplifying the high standards that are expected of an ETSU athlete. The Bucs have an extensive nonconference schedule that will challenge and prepare them for Atlantic Sun play. Notable non-conference opponents include matches against North Carolina, Appalachian State and UNCGreensboro. Without a doubt, an important goal of the Bucs 2008 campaign will be to achieve a berth into the postseason. With a number of teams in the A-Sun returning talented and experienced rosters in 2008, the young ETSU team will have to mature in the first half of the season.

Goalkeepers

The Bucs will have three keepers to look to in its first season, James Holt, Cade Jones and Kyle Martin. Holt’s physical tools give him a tremendous upside, while Jones is a tenacious and hardworking player. Martin also comes into the season in great form, having recently led his club team to the North Carolina State Cup championship and Southern Regional quarterfinals.

2008 Inaugural Season Yearbook

Defenders

Defensively the Bucs feature Mike Fuller and Jaron Westbrook in the center of defense with Conrad McCue, Tyler Hoek, Matt Reed, and Kat McElroy in the wide areas. Both Fuller and Westbrook are strong in the air and combative players. They will offer a physical presence to help solidify the Bucs’ back line. As a group the outside backs are intelligent and technical players. Conrad’s athleticism and ability to play the ball over distance could figure strongly into the ETSU attack. Tyler’s Division I playing experience will be helpful in creating cohesion across the Bucs back four.

Midfielders

ETSU’s midfield can be considered one of the strengths of the 2008 team with Calabrese putting together a very talented group of players with a wealth of technical ability. The central midfielders include Sean Hoek, Tony Nunes and Tim Nixon. Sean has the ability to score goals and create chances from the midfield, and is always a threat in and around the box. Nunes possesses vision and balance with the ability to dictate the tempo for his team. In the wide areas Andrew Brown’s and David Haba’s pace will put teams under considerable pressure. Austin Kennedy, the only true left footed player, will bring tenacity and fight to the midfield group. Beck Williams and Casey Johnston are both clever and technical players, and Brennan Scott is a tough tackling defensive midfielder.

Forwards

The forwards feature four very talented yet very different players which include Aaron Schoenfeld, Russell Thompson, Tom Webster and Aliyu Sugri. Schoenfeld is a tremendous target player, who uses his height and body well. His ability in the air and tremendous work rate results in the creation of numerous chances for himself and teammates. Thompson’s a very quick and technical player who is clinical in front of goal. Webster is equally crafty around the box and comfortable finishing with his right and left foot. Sugri adds something different. His pace and athleticism will be a vaulable assest to ETSU’s inaugural team.

Strength and Conditioning Season Preview Coaches

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education

This is ETSU Opponents

The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport teams 2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to coaches regarding coaching practices. 3. Advising on the Training Process 4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 24th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual or team off-season conditioning program.

Players

The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology, Leisure, and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research.
