ETSU Men’s Golf Bucs named “Academic” National Champions The Golf Coaches Association of America named the ETSU men’s golf team its Division I Academic National Champion for 2008-09. In fact, the Buccaneers posted not only the top GPA among 294 Division I programs, but the highest team average of any school in any division, which included 1,138 teams. In the first year of the award, a total of 82 teams submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher and earned All-Academic Team recognition. “I am so delighted for our team to receive the inaugural Academic National Champion Award from the GCAA for the highest team GPA in Division I men’s golf,” said East Tennessee State University head coach Fred Warren. “Our players take their classwork seriously, and certainly exemplify the ‘student’ part of being an NCAA studentathlete. I am proud of our young men not only for their hard work and dedication to their academic responsibilities, but also for their time-management skills. This award means a lot to our team, and we are honored to be this year’s recipient.” Belmont, Detroit Mercy, East Carolina, ETSU, Georgia Tech, Gustavus Adolphus, Ohio Dominican, Rice, SCAD, Seton Hall and St. Mary’s (Texas) were also accorded President’s Special Recognition status for earning team GPAs of 3.50 or better. To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors a college or university must submit the grade points earned and hours attempted for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.

In Memory of Ben Enoch This edition of the 2009-10 ETSU Men’s Golf Media Guide is dedicated to the memory of Ben Enoch. Enoch, an ETSU signee and brother of current ETSU junior Rhys Enoch, was tragically killed in an automobile accident on April 30, 2009. The youngest member of the Welsh Men’s Team and a member of the Walker Cup squad, Ben was a highly respected player who had a bright future ahead. His loss will always be remembered by the Buccaneers.

Two-time finalist for National Coach-of-the-Year honors. Honored as a Texas Christian University Legend. Led the Bucs to Southern Conference titles 12 times (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2005). The 1996 squad finished third at NCAA Championships and ninth in 2001. Education: Graduated from UCLA in 1973 with a B.A. in speech. Earned a master’s degree in education from Oklahoma State in 1986. Entering his 24th season at ETSU and his 32nd year overall, Hall of Fame head coach Fred Warren continues to build a winning tradition for the Buccaneers, guiding them into the national spotlight on a yearly basis. As the 2009-10 season enters the spring portion of the campaign, Warren – who has now coached in five decades and was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America’s Hall of Fame in December of 2003 – and the Bucs are coming off a 2008-09 campaign which saw the team once again reach NCAA competition. In fact, the squad was coming off a 2007-08 campaign in which they earned a Top 15 ranking throughout much of the year, and made its 20th trip to the NCAA Championships, finishing 22nd on the team leaderboard. One year ago, Warren helped guide freshman Michael Stewart to an individual title in the Atlantic Sun Conference championships, while Stewart joined teammates Seamus Power and Rhys Enoch on the first team All A-Sun squad. In fact, Power was named the league’s Player of the Year, while Stewart garnered Freshman of the Year honors.

Since his arrival in 1986, the Warren-led Buccaneer program has been a consistent performer among the nation’s elite, finishing in the top 13 six times and in the top 25 13 times since 1989 – including a third-place finish at the 1996 NCAA Championships and a ninth-place finish in 2001. During the past 23 seasons, Warren’s Buc squads have won 40 tournaments, including the 2001 NCAA East Regional at Williamsburg, Va. During the 2000-01 season, his squad won four tournaments, including three straight from April to May. Even more impressive, his 1995-96 team won six events, tying national champion Arizona State and Florida for the most tournament wins during the year, and was ranked as the No. 1 team in the country during part of the year. Just three years after arriving in Johnson City, Warren returned ETSU to the top of the Southern Conference, a position where the Bucs remained for 12 of the next 17 years. Warren led the Bucs to league titles from 1989-92, 1994-96, 1998-2001, and in 2005, his 12 championships broke the 54-year-old SoCon record of 11 titles held by longtime Duke golf coach Ellis “Dumpy” Hagler, making Warren the winningest men’s golf coach in SoCon history. The Bucs advanced to the NCAA Championships in 1989 and 1992, from 1994 to 2001, and also made the field in four straight seasons (2005-08). Warren is a seven-time winner of Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors (1989, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1996, 1998 and 1999), has won Atlantic Sun Conference Coach-of-the-Year once, and has twice earned NCAA District Coach-ofthe-Year (1989 and 1996). He was a runner-up for National Coach-of-the-Year honors following the 1995-96 season. During his tenure at ETSU, Warren has coached 18 All-America selections and 30 All-Southern Conference choices, and three All-Atlantic Sun picks. He has coached eight of the past 14 Southern Conference Individual Medalists, two Atlantic Sun Conference champions, 11 SoCon Players-of-the-Year, and three Atlantic Sun Conference Players-of-the-Year. Warren joined the Buccaneer program from collegiate golf power Oklahoma State, where he served as an assistant coach. During his tenure in Stillwater, the Cowboys won three Big Eight championships and finished as NCAA Tournament runners-up on three occasions. Warren began his coaching career at Texas Christian University, where he led both the men’s and women’s programs from 1979-84. While at TCU, his Horned Frog men’s team finished fourth at the 1980 NCAA Championships and posted a 27th-place finish in 1983. That year he became the first coach to ever place a men’s and women’s team in the NCAA Tournament field during the same season. He guided the women to the 1983 NCAA title and a runner-up finish the previous year. He was named Southwest Conference Men’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1980 and was the SWC Women’s Coach-of-theYear choice in 1983. In October 2000, Warren was inducted into the TCU Horned Frog Hall of Honor, and in 2003 he was named a TCU “Legend.” Warren has taught in Golf Digest Instruction Schools, in the Oklahoma State Golf Schools, the North Carolina Golf Schools, the Georgia Academy of Golf, at Purdue University and at the NIKE All-Star Golf Camp. He has served as a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee. He has served as Chair of the NCAA District 3 North Golf Committee, as the Chair of the Southern Conference Golf Coaches and as a Chair of the GCAA All-America Selection Committee. Warren also has served on the Golf Coaches Association of America Ethics Committee. Warren played his collegiate golf at UCLA while earning a bachelor of arts degree in speech. He received a master of science degree in education from Oklahoma State. He served as a U.S. Marine Corps officer from 1974-78 and was honorably discharged, reaching the rank of Captain. Warren is active in several ETSU student organizations. He is a faculty advisor for Kappa Delta Sorority and has served in the same role for Campus Crusade for Christ and the Christian Student Fellowship.

6  ETSU Men's Golf  2010 Season

Men’s Golf Sets Sights on Return to Top 25 The ETSU men enter the 2010 spring season with their sights set on returning to the Top 25 nationally, a place that the Buccaneers have consistently ranked over the last three decades. The Bucs have a veteran and experienced squad, led by a pair of former Atlantic Sun Conference individual champions in 2007 medalist Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) and 2009 winner Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotland). Power, a senior, led the team in stroke average at 73.5 one year ago and enjoyed a victory in the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational. He has three career victories at ETSU and finished the 2009 fall season third on the team with a 74.2 stroke average. While Power is the lone senior on the squad, juniors Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) and Paul O’Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) also bring a wealth of experience and talent to the lineup. Enoch’s resume includes a win in the 2008 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate as a sophomore, and he led the team with a 71.8 stroke average and three Top 10 finishes in four events during the fall portion of the 2009-10 schedule. Meanwhile, O’Kane finished third on the team a year ago with a 74.6 stroke average and posted two Top 10 finishes. In the fall of 2009, O’Kane was second on the team with a 74.1 stroke average, playing in two of the team’s five events.

Stewart leads a group of four Buccaneers who are either sophomores or freshmen, and has enjoyed a strong start to his collegiate career. Stewart, who posted four Top 6 finishes as a freshman, won last year’s A-Sun Championship and finished fourth on the team in stroke average during the fall (74.3). The other sophomores on the squad include Devin Komline (Dorset, Vermont) and Peter Wilson (Locust Valley, N.J.). Komline played in each of the team’s five events during the fall and finished fifth on the team with a 75.1 stroke average. Wilson competed in three tournaments and enjoyed his best finish in the fall by tying for 40th in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges. Garth McGee (Bangor, Northern Ireland) is the team’s lone freshman, and competed in three of five events during the fall. His low round of the fall came in the second round of the Gary Koch Invitational, where he posted a 74. After opening the season at the JU Invitational, the Bucs will play an additional four events in preparation for the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, which will start April 19th. The team’s schedule again features some of the nation’s top collegiate events, including the Puerto Rico Classic, which begins Feb. 21.

ETSU

and the

SoCon Championships

The Buccaneers captured the Southern Conference men’s golf championship 17 times after joining the league in 1979 -- the most by any conference member. ETSU was dominant from the beginning, winning five straight titles from 1979-1983. Making the numbers even more impressive is the fact that ETSU did not have a men’s golf team from 1984-86. Most recently, the Bucs won six straight titles from 1996 to 2001, and bid farewell to the SoCon with a championship in 2005. The Bucs won eight of 10 titles during the '90s and began this decade by winning the 2000 and 2001 championships. The Buccaneers won 12 of 15 championships. Along with the team accolades, many ETSU players have received conference honors. The Bucs have had 12 individual conference champions -- including Patrick Beste in 2000 and Chris Wisler in 1999. The Bucs joined the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2006.

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (Oct. 18, 2009) – The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate has become a home-awayfrom-home experience for the Tennessee Volunteers. The 21st-ranked Vols tied for the team championship with Pac-10 member and 13thranked Oregon State on, as the two teams finished the third and final round tied at 3-under-par 861. Tennessee was declared the winner based on headto-head scoring for each of the teams’ fifth player. It ETSU senior Rhys Davies collects his second straight Bank marks the third time the Vols have captured the BOT of Tennessee Intercollegiate championship from Bank of Intercollegiate title. Tennessee’s Roy Harmon (left) and The Ridges’ Rab Summers. While Tennessee and Oregon State battled it out in the team competition, the Beavers’ Diego Velasquez left no drama on the individual leaderboard. Leading from start to finish, Velasquez ended the event at 10-under 206 (66-70-70) and won by seven strokes over a trio of players tied at 3-under 213. As for the hosts, the ETSU Buccaneers moved up the leaderboard for the second straight day and finished tied for sixth. In just 12 years, the Intercollegiate has rapidly developed into one of the premier collegiate golf tournaments in the United States. Each year, the tournament has featured many of the nation’s finest teams and individual players. For example, the 2003 tournament featured 6 of 14 teams having participated in the 2001 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, with all 14 teams participating in NCAA Regional competition in 2000. That year joining the host East Tennessee State Bucs, who finished ninth at the 2001 NCAA Championships, were Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Houston, Kansas, North Carolina, North Florida, Oklahoma, Pepperdine, South Carolina, Southern California, Tennessee, TCU and Wake Forest. In 2002, Wake Forest, North Carolina, TCU, Duke, South Carolina, ETSU, Tennessee, Auburn, Arkansas, Houston, and others participated in the event. In 2001, 16 of the 18 schools were ranked at the time of the event. Clemson won the first Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges in 1998 with a five-stroke victory over Georgia Tech. Clemson’s Jonathan Byrd scorched the course, firing a 9-under-par 207 to take the individual title by one stroke over teammate Lucas Glover. Another highlight of the 1998 tournament was the collegiate debut of 1999 U.S. Amateur champion David Gossett of Texas. The 1999 edition of The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges was won by Oklahoma, who outdistanced Arizona by five strokes. North Carolina’s Max Harris shot a 5-under-par 211 to claim the individual title by two strokes. The 2000 tournament was won by TCU by three strokes over South Carolina. The individual medalist honors went down to the wire as South Carolina’s Johan Kok shot an 8-under-par 208, outdistancing ETSU’s Chris Wisler by one stroke. Team champions over the last six years include TCU (2001), Wake Forest (2002), Florida (2003), Tennessee (2004 & 2006) and South Carolina (2005), Virginia Tech (2007), Coastal Carolina (2008), and Tennessee (2009). Individual champions of note include Bill Haas of Wake Forest, who took back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003, and former ETSU standout Rhys Davies, who won in both 2005 and 2006. The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges is held annually at The Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough, Tenn. The 18-hole, 7,001-yard, par 72 course was designed by renowned course architect Arthur Hills.

Winning the Michael Stewart

In winning the Freshman of the Year award, Stewart followed in the footsteps of teammates Power and Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) as the third straight Buccaneer to capture the honor. At last month’s A-Sun Championships, he rallied from four strokes down entering the final round to catch and pass fellow freshman, Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume, thanks to three consecutive birdies on his closing nine holes. His win marked the third in a row for a Buccaneer, following Power in 2007 and Shaw in 2008. His win at the A-Sun Championships carried him to a unanimous spot on both the AllAtlantic Sun First-Team and All-Freshman Team.

Tara Byrne

After leading the ETSU women’s tennis team to its second NCAA Tournament appearance senior Tara Byrne received the prestigious Southeast Region ITA/NCAA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The First-Team All-A-Sun member and tournament MVP also became the second player in program history to surpass 100 career wins. Back on April 13, 2009, the local Johnson City native became ETSU’s all-time career wins leader, passing Masha Illina’s mark of 103 victories. Overall the four-time allconference member and team captain left ETSU with 107 career wins, which tops all players in the A-Sun this past season.

Yaser Zaatini

After losing four seniors off of the 2008 Bucs squad head coach Yaser Zaatini responded by leading ETSU through one of the toughest schedules in the entire nation. After coaching ETSU to its sixth straight unbeaten conference season and wins over four ITA-ranked teams, Zaatini was honored for the second straight season as the A-Sun Coach of the Year. Overall, it was Zaatini’s third “Coach of the Year” honor by the A-Sun and fifth overall (SoCon 2004, 2005) The Bucs earned their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance after dropping league foe Stetson, 4-2 for its third straight A-Sun Tournament title.

Yevgenyia Stupak

Stupak continued to impress in her junior season leading the Lady Bucs to a share of their third regular season championship and second A-Sun Tournament title. Overall, Stupak rolled to an impressive 30-6 singles mark, picking up wins against players from 16 ITA-ranked teams. In addition to a remarkable 23-9 doubles record, Stupak was the highest ranked ITA player in the conference, which helped earn her the 2009 A-Sun Women’s Player of the Year award.

Seamus Power

Power, who was part of an ETSU awards sweep as the Freshman of the Year in 2007 (with Warren and Rhys Davies), became the third Buccaneer to win the conference Player of the Year. Power and former teammates Davies (2006-07) and Gareth Shaw (2008) combined to put an ETSU stranglehold on the league’s top individual honor over the last four years. He joins Jacksonville State’s Matias Anselmo as the only two in Atlantic Sun history to win both the Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in a career. The Waterford, Ireland native shared Medalist honors at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational and placed second at the Kauai Collegiate Cup. In addition to the A-Sun honor Power became the eighth person in ETSU men’s golf history to receive All-America honors as he was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.

Fred Warren

The Bucs legendary golf coach picked up his ninth Coach of the Year award in 2009. Overall, the Hall-of-Famer coach has won the A-Sun award twice, to go along with the seven he totaled while in the Southern Conference. Under Warren’s direction the Bucs earned their 18th trip to the NCAA Championships this past May.

Ben Ronoh

ETSU track and field newcomer Ben Ronoh lived up to the hype after helping the Bucs win the “Triple Crown” in 2008-09. The native from Sotik, Kenya was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. At the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships, Ronoh swept the 3000m and 5000m events on the David E. Walker track inside Memorial Center and was named the league’s top performer. The sophomore distance runner made it a clean sweep after winning the steeplechase and finishing second (behind his cousin Kenneth Rotich) in the 5000m and 10000m at the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Fla.

Right Way Enrique Olivares

Overall, Olivares closed out his career as not just one of the top men’s tennis players in program history, but as one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of intercollegiate athletics at ETSU. The second winningest player in school history wrapped up his career with a remarkable 115 wins, including posting an Atlantic Sun Conference record-setting mark of 32-1(.969 winning percentage). A mainstay in the national rankings since arriving in the Tri-Cites, Olivares held 14 career wins against nationally ITA ranked players.

Siarre Evans

Since arriving in Johnson City in the fall of 2006, rising senior Siarre Evans hasn’t disappointed the Lady Buccaneer faithful. After adding Atlantic Sun Freshman Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team and Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team accolades to her resume in her first two seasons, Evans continued to impress in 2008-09. The Griffin, Ga., native, who became only the 16th ETSU player of all-time to reach the 1,000-point club and lead the conference with 16.4 ppg and 10.3 rpg, was named the 2009 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year and Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP. Furthermore, Evans’ stellar play placed her as a finalist on the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team.

Paul Hoilman

After an outstanding freshman season, Hoilman had a career 2008-09 sophomore year as he received numerous postseason awards including being named to the Louisville Slugger All-America Third-Team, the Ping!Baseball All-America Honorable Mention Team and the College Baseball Insider All-America Second-Team. In addition, Dahl claimed the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship in the 1500m at Louisville. Dahl, who won the Atlantic Sun Championship in the mile (indoor), 800m (outdoor) and 1500m (outdoor), was also a five-time A-Sun Athlete of the Week winner. The senior runner ran a leg in both the indoor and outdoor conference championship 4x400-meter relay. In total, Dahl contributed for 29 percent of the Lady Bucs’ scoring at the outdoor conference championships and was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at the post-race ceremony.

Kenneth Rotich

Kenneth Rotich, a three-time Cross Country Athlete of the Week winner, was named the Atlantic Sun Runner of the Year after winning the conference championship with a time of 24:34 in Macon, Ga. The native of Nairobi, Kenya helped the Bucs win their 21st cross country title in school history and was the first ETSU runner to win a championship since 1995. In total, Rotich won three races in 2008 and moved his current running total of A-Sun Athlete of the Week honors to six, which marks a new conference best.

Bo Reeder

Reeder came on strong in his freshman season tying the ETSU freshman home run record with 15 in his first year with the Bucs. Reeder was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team. The 2008-09 season saw many impressive feats out of Reeder as he defeated ACC foe Virginia Tech in his first career start, while throwing a complete game and hitting for the cycle in the same week. Reeder also came in to get the save against Tennessee on the road to complete a sweep of the Vols. Reeder was a unanimous selection for the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, was named the A-Sun Player of the Week and made the College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Lineup on March 23.
