Season Preview Season Preview –

Coming off a strong inaugural season that saw the Bucs finish 6-10-1 last season, head coach Scott Calabrese can’t wait to get on the field in 2009. The men’s soccer team defeated many seasoned Division I teams in 2008 including victories over Wofford, VMI, Elon, High Point, USC Upstate and Radford. As a team, the players gained experience that was crucial to the development of the program. The inaugural season brought the Buccaneers both victories and heartbreaking losses, but win or lose they were competitive in every game. This year the team looks to improve upon its Atlantic Sun record and make its first postseason appearance in only the program’s second year. This season the men’s soccer program returns a group of talented young players as at least two thirds of the squad are freshmen and sophomores. Of the 11 starters from last season nine were freshmen. Their experience and character have established a strong foundation for the program’s future. After having seen the players mature and develop over the past year, the coaching staff is pleased to see the improvement of the returning players coming into the season. The Buccaneers have also brought in an impressive 2009 recruiting class. Calabrese expects that the incoming players will make an immediate impact on the team and challenge for starting spots right away.

Goalkeeping

James Holt had an impressive freshman campaign as he was named to the 2008 Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team as well as being named Team MVP by his peers. Holt has tremendous physical attributes that make him a player with a promising future. Scott Rosman joins the ETSU squad as a transfer from Clemson. As a 5th year senior, Rosman brings tremendous experience and leadership to the Bucs. While at Clemson, Rosman competed at the highest level of college soccer, participating in both the Final Four and Final 16 at the NCAA Tournament.

Defenders

ETSU had solid performances in the back from Conrad McCue, Jaron Westbrook, Matt Reed, Blake Pelton and Mohsen Pourmorteza in 2008, and they are all expected to continue to compete for playing time in 2009. Andrew Brown’s move to the outside back position promises to make the Bucs dangerous attacking out of the back. The addition of University of Alabama-Huntsville transfer Guilherme Reis will also add the experience and leadership to the ETSU back line, which will enhance its success this season. With the added experience the Bucs should look to make fewer mistakes in the back and be able to play an exciting attacking style.

Midfielders

The Bucs return a very talented midfield group in 2009 as Tyler Hoek, Sean Hoek, Tony Nunes, and Tim Nixon all have a year of D-1 experience under their belt. The Hoek brothers, Nunes and Nixon should all compete for starting roles this fall, led by Sean Hoek. Hoek was a 2008 Atlantic Sun All-freshman selection, and his ability to work from box

to box makes him a catalyst in the midfield for the Bucs. Nunes has proven to be the Buccaneers’ steadiest player, and has the vision and ability to dictate the game’s tempo. Tyler Hoek played a number of roles for the Bucs in 2008, and his intelligent play along with his strong work ethic make him a player that the coaches can utilize in a number of positions, while Nixon emerged in the spring and showed great potential for the future. The addition of Alesi Osorio will make the midfield of ETSU’s team even stronger. Osorio is a player with a great passing ability as he can control and change the tempo of the game, and will be a great asset to the team. The Bucs wide midfield group consists of David Haba and Kat McElroy. Haba’s return from injury will give the Bucs additional options in the wide areas for the 2009 season, as the coaches are confident he will be a major threat for ETSU. McElroy helped spark the team on a number of occasions last season, while providing energy and valuable minutes.

Forwards

Having players with a talent for scoring goals was a priority for 2009. Newcomer Theo Yang brings a legitimate threat and creativity to the final third. Aaron Schoenfeld, showed tremendous ability throughout the inaugural season. His outstanding work rate and physical presence will create many chances for the Bucs. Schoenfeld will be used in a variety of ways though, as his versatility may be utilized in the back depending on the needs of the team. Kyle Franklin brings both experience and maturity to the ETSU roster. Franklin is a technical player who can score goals and create chances. In his final year, the coaches will be looking for him to emerge as a player that makes an impact in every game. Yang is a very quick and technical player from Atlanta, Ga., who will add a much-needed vision to the attack.

Summers-Taylor Stadium

Summers-Taylor Stadium

Located on the west side of the university campus is the home field of the Bucs, Summers-Taylor Stadium. The stadium, which debuted in 2008, was made possible by the considerable contribution made by the Summers family. The Summers’ daughter Lena Summers was a member of the ETSU women’s soccer team from 1998-2002. Summers-Taylor Stadium’s west side houses permanent stands that hold 1,000 fans, with an open area berm placed on the east side of the field. It is equipped with a press box, hospitality suites and an electronic scoreboard/message center. The press box houses both the scoreboard operating system and the public address system as well as room to comfortably seat over 10 members of the media. The men’s team will be entering its second season at the state-of-the-art facility.

Without a doubt the most used piece of equipment in the athletic training facility is the Hydroworx polar plunge pool. It is used by all teams on a daily basis post practice and used by all injured athletes under the care of the athletic training staff. Along with the cold pool is a Hydroworx 500 therapy pool. This pool has a treadmill as part of the floor and two cameras mounted on the front and side of the pool. This gives visual feedback to the athlete and athletic trainer during treatment.

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology Leisure and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research. The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport teams 2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to coaches regarding coaching practices. 3. Advising on the Training Process 4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 25th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual or team off-season conditioning program.

Championships Dancing Again

In 2008-09, the ETSU men’s basketball team continued to build on its long-standing tradition of success, capturing the 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championship. With that victory, the Buccaneers made their eighth trip all-time to the NCAA Tournament, while bringing home the 26th overall championship in program history. More recently, ETSU has now enjoyed four 20-win seasons in the last seven years, having won conference titles in each of those four campaigns.

Back-To-Back

After posting a program-tying fourth consecutive winning season, ETSU women’s basketball made history by making its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2008-09. The Lady Bucs, who boasted the number one seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, defeated Mercer and Jacksonville en route to being tabbed the No. 13 seed in the Berkeley Region. ETSU set a new school record with 16 conference victories and tallied its third straight 20-win season after finishing the campaign at 20-11. Four Lady Bucs were rewarded for their hard work on the court, as Siarre Evans was named the 2009 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, while Latisha Belcher received Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year honors. In addition, TaRonda Wiles was named First All-Conference and Gwen Washington was selected to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team. Meanwhile, Evans also cleaned up at the A-Sun Tournament by being tabbed Tournament MVP and was also named a Finalist on the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team.

Three-peat A year removed from earning its first-ever NCAA Tournament win, the ETSU men’s tennis team continued to dominate play winning its fourth straight A-Sun Regular Season crown, while dropping league rival Stetson 4-2, for its third straight A-Sun Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth. In addition to its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance the No. 61-ranked Bucs sweep through the conference awards as head coach Yaser Zaatini was named the 2009 A-Sun Coach of the Year, while senior Enrique Olivares was again named the A-Sun Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and tournament MVP for the second consecutive season. Overall, the Bucs placed six total players on the all-conference teams in addition to running its current A-Sun winning streak to 34 straight wins.

are . . . BLUE The Tri-Fecta

The ETSU men’s cross country/track and field program joined an elite group in 2008-09, as the Bucs were only one of five Division I programs to win the “Triple Crown.” The Bucs began leg one of their quest on the first Saturday in November when ETSU held off Belmont for its first A-Sun crown and 21st overall conference championship. ETSU, who defeated the Bruins by six points (29 to 35), brought its first cross country championship back to Johnson City since winning the crown in 1996. Then, on the third weekend of February, the Bucs completed leg two of the Trifecta run, as ETSU knocked off reigning conference champion Kennesaw State and hoisted the A-Sun Indoor Championship crown for the third time in the last four years. The “Triple Crown” was finally completed in mid-May when the Buccaneer squad overcame many obstacles – and once again – held off Kennesaw State to claim its second outdoor title since joining the league in 2005-06. The ETSU distance runners had a huge hand in winning the championship, as the Bucs went 1-thru-3 in the 5000m and 1-thru-4 in the 10000m.

Redemption Head coach Steve Brooks’ squad returned to the Big Dance for the second time in school history, after winning both the regular season and A-Sun Tournament titles over league rival Stetson. Despite a first-round NCAA Tournament loss to in-state rival and host Tennessee, the Lady Bucs rolled to their best overall season in program history, placing four members on the allconference team, while senior Tara Byrne (MVP), junior Yevgenyia Stupak and sophomore Tara Sheets earned all-tournament honors.

Winning the Michael Stewart

In winning the Freshman of the Year award, Stewart followed in the footsteps of teammates Power and Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) as the third straight Buccaneer to capture the honor. At last month’s A-Sun Championships, he rallied from four strokes down entering the final round to catch and pass fellow freshman, Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume, thanks to three consecutive birdies on his closing nine holes. His win marked the third in a row for a Buccaneer, following Power in 2007 and Shaw in 2008. His win at the A-Sun Championships carried him to a unanimous spot on both the AllAtlantic Sun First-Team and All-Freshman Team.

Tara Byrne

After leading the ETSU women’s tennis team to its second NCAA Tournament appearance senior Tara Byrne received the prestigious Southeast Region ITA/NCAA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The First-Team All-A-Sun member and tournament MVP also became the second player in program history to surpass 100 career wins. Back on April 13, 2009, the local Johnson City native became ETSU’s all-time career wins leader, passing Masha Illina’s mark of 103 victories. Overall the four-time allconference member and team captain left ETSU with 107 career wins, which tops all players in the A-Sun this past season.

Yaser Zaatini

After losing four seniors off of the 2008 Bucs squad head coach Yaser Zaatini responded by leading ETSU through one of the toughest schedules in the entire nation. After coaching ETSU to its sixth straight unbeaten conference season and wins over four ITA-ranked teams, Zaatini was honored for the second straight season as the A-Sun Coach of the Year. Overall, it was Zaatini’s third “Coach of the Year” honor by the A-Sun and fifth overall (SoCon 2004, 2005) The Bucs earned their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance after dropping league foe Stetson, 4-2 for its third straight A-Sun Tournament title.

34 • 2009 ETSU Men’s Soccer

Yevgenyia Stupak

Stupak continued to impress in her junior season leading the Lady Bucs to a share of their third regular season championship and second A-Sun Tournament title. Overall, Stupak rolled to an impressive 30-6 singles mark, picking up wins against players from 16 ITA-ranked teams. In addition to a remarkable 23-9 doubles record, Stupak was the highest ranked ITA player in the conference, which helped earn her the 2009 A-Sun Women’s Player of the Year award.

Seamus Power

Power, who was part of an ETSU awards sweep as the Freshman of the Year in 2007 (with Warren and Rhys Davies), became the third Buccaneer to win the conference Player of the Year. Power and former teammates Davies (2006-07) and Gareth Shaw (2008) combined to put an ETSU stranglehold on the league’s top individual honor over the last four years. He joins Jacksonville State’s Matias Anselmo as the only two in Atlantic Sun history to win both the Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in a career. The Waterford, Ireland native shared Medalist honors at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational and placed second at the Kauai Collegiate Cup. In addition to the A-Sun honor Power became the eighth person in ETSU men’s golf history to receive All-America honors as he was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.

Fred Warren

The Bucs legendary golf coach picked up his ninth Coach of the Year award in 2009. Overall, the Hall-of-Famer coach has won the A-Sun award twice, to go along with the seven he totaled while in the Southern Conference. Under Warren’s direction the Bucs earned their 18th trip to the NCAA Championships this past May.

Ben Ronoh

ETSU track and field newcomer Ben Ronoh lived up to the hype after helping the Bucs win the “Triple Crown” in 2008-09. The native from Sotik, Kenya was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. At the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships, Ronoh swept the 3000m and 5000m events on the David E. Walker track inside Memorial Center and was named the league’s top performer. The sophomore distance runner made it a clean sweep after winning the steeplechase and finishing second (behind his cousin Kenneth Rotich) in the 5000m and 10000m at the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Fla.

Right Way Enrique Olivares

Overall, Olivares closed out his career as not just one of the top men’s tennis players in program history, but as one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of intercollegiate athletics at ETSU. The second winningest player in school history wrapped up his career with a remarkable 115 wins, including posting an Atlantic Sun Conference record-setting mark of 32-1(.969 winning percentage). The fourtime A-Sun First-Team member and twotime A-Sun Player of the Year, became the highest ranked ITA preseason player in school and league history in 2008 as the No. 9-ranked ITA singles player in the nation. The three-time A-Sun Tournament MVP, again led the Bucs to their fourth straight A-Sun Regular Season title and a third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. A mainstay in the national rankings since arriving in the Tri-Cites, Olivares held 14 career wins against nationally ITA ranked players.

Siarre Evans

Since arriving in Johnson City in the fall of 2006, rising senior Siarre Evans hasn’t disappointed the Lady Buccaneer faithful. After adding Atlantic Sun Freshman Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team and Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team accolades to her resume in her first two seasons, Evans continued to impress in 2008-09. The Griffin, Ga., native, who became only the 16th ETSU player of all-time to reach the 1,000-point club and lead the conference with 16.4 ppg and 10.3 rpg, was named the 2009 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year and Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP. Furthermore, Evans’ stellar play placed her as a finalist on the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team.

Paul Hoilman

After an outstanding freshman season, Hoilman had a career 2008-09 sophomore year as he received numerous postseason awards including being named to the Louisville Slugger All-America Third-Team, the Ping!Baseball All-America Honorable Mention Team and the College Baseball Insider All-America Second-Team. Hoilman received Atlantic Sun All-Conference First-Team recognition and was selected as the A-Sun Player of the Week on April 27. The Johnson City native led the A-Sun in slugging, and finished in the top ten in batting average, on-base percentage, runs scored, RBIs, doubles, home runs, walks and sacrifice flies.

Heidi Dahl

Dahl was an outstanding track and field athlete in 2008-09, as she represented ETSU at both the Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships. The Orem, Utah, native became the first Lady Buccaneer student-athlete to receive All-America honors since 2000 at the Outdoor Championships, as she finished sixth in the 1500m run. In addition, Dahl claimed the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship in the 1500m at Louisville. Dahl, who won the Atlantic Sun Championship in the mile (indoor), 800m (outdoor) and 1500m (outdoor), was also a five-time A-Sun Athlete of the Week winner. The senior runner ran a leg in both the indoor and outdoor conference championship 4x400-meter relay. In total, Dahl contributed for 29 percent of the Lady Bucs’ scoring at the outdoor conference championships and was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at the post-race ceremony.

Kenneth Rotich

Kenneth Rotich, a three-time Cross Country Athlete of the Week winner, was named the Atlantic Sun Runner of the Year after winning the conference championship with a time of 24:34 in Macon, Ga. The native of Nairobi, Kenya helped the Bucs win their 21st cross country title in school history and was the first ETSU runner to win a championship since 1995. In total, Rotich won three races in 2008 and moved his current running total of A-Sun Athlete of the Week honors to six, which marks a new conference best.

Bo Reeder

Reeder came on strong in his freshman season tying the ETSU freshman home run record with 15 in his first year with the Bucs. Reeder was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team. The 2008-09 season saw many impressive feats out of Reeder as he defeated ACC foe Virginia Tech in his first career start, while throwing a complete game and hitting for the cycle in the same week. Reeder also came in to get the save against Tennessee on the road to complete a sweep of the Vols. Reeder was a unanimous selection for the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, was named the A-Sun Player of the Week and made the College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Lineup on March 23.
